Converting MPEG-2 to iMovie???

Just wondering if Roxio Popcorn 2 would do a good job in converting MPEG-2 from my Sony HDD camcorder to iMovie HD? (I don't want to pay 50$ then find out it don't work) Any thoughts??? Thanks.

You will find that you will need to do the following…
1) Purchase and install the Quicktime MPEG-2 component.
2) Download a utility call MPEG StreamClip…
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/24055
… and use it to convert the MPEG-2 files to DVD steams.
3) Import the created streams into iMovie.

Get a free app called MPEG Streamclip.
    Available here.
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
Drag your clip or clips into MPEG Streamclip. Then use FILE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME to export the clips in Apple Intermediate Codec.
Sometimes, MPEG2 clips also require that you install the Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component. MPEG Streamclip will tell you if you need this. This is available from Apple for $20.

  • Converting .MPEG files in iphoto 09 to be compatible with imovie 09

Is it possible to convert .MPEG files located in iphoto 09, so they can be copied and used in imovie 09? If so, how? Videos are from a Sony Cybershot digital camera. Files from a Canon digital camera convert fine. Thanks.

Yes, personally I'd use mpegstreamclip (although it requires the QT mpeg2 playback component for mpeg2), there are plenty of other converters many of which are free though.

  • What is the best video converter for DVD to iMovie? Either free or to purchase.

What is the best video converter for DVD to iMovie? Either free or to purchase.  And one that is 'fool-proof' and very easy to use.  Many thanks, anyone who can advise.

You want to 'reverse engineer' the compressed mpeg2 DVD file back to something iMovie can use?
You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • Can Quicktime Pro convert CamStudio video into iMovie?

    Dear All
I use CamStudio to record some Windows application presentations. I heard that QuickTime Pro gives the ability to convert any playable movie to be converted to formats that iMovie accepts. I am pondering if I should by QuickTime pro or not. Could you please give me some advice? Here are my questions.
I am wondering if anyone has tried to import the video recorded using CamStudio to QuickTime Pro and convert to a format that iMovie can accept and edit?
Another question would be, is there any formatting limitation iMovie possesses which limits the merger of two videos from two sources?
Thanks in advance for your answers.

Here's the summary of what I did :
    Downloaded [CamStudio|http://camstudio.org>
Openen VirtualBox on my Mac and installed Camstudio in Win XP.
    Made a screenmovie.
    Saved it to the Mac.
Opened it in QT Pro on the Mac.
Exported it to QuickTime (.mov) and MPEG-4 (.mp4).
    Opened both in iMovie.
    Made movie with both clips.
    Exported it to .m4v.
    So it is possible.
    And here's the movie : [CamStudio|http://www.wyodor.net/_Discussions/CamStudio.html]

  • Old mpeg movies to imovie

I can't load my old mpeg movies into imovie to do editing?
    My camera defaults to mpeg.
I've made the apple conversion and can't figure this out!

You need to convert mepg video to iMovie - MOV or MP4.

  • Converting MPEG

I am sure this had been asked, but I was not sure what to search for. I have a hard drive video camera that gives me mpeg files. What program can I use to convert those into something iMovie 09 will recognize. With my old imac I used Squared 5, but that is not working for me with my macbook with snow leopard.
    Thank you!!!!
    MrsA

MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5 will do it. You may also need the Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component, but MPEG Streamclip will tell you if you need it. It is a $20 download from Apple. You may have had it on your old computer. If you still have it, you can transfer it over.

  • Please help with converting mpeg 1 movies..

I have a Hitachi video camera that is not recognised by imovie. It outputs in mpeg1 format. Downloaded MPEG streamclip and tried to convert it, my problem is the video ended up having interlace problems when ther is any movement..
Can someone tell me what format is best for imovie and the setting for mpeg streamclip?
I am about to finally give up, and start using my girlfriend's PC...

I do not know how vital if for you, but if it really is, MPEG2 Works 4 will convert MPEG 1's to MPEG 2's, you could *then transfer the MPEG 2 into iM08* or transcode to something else.
Unfortunately is not free, but you could go to the website, and **_download a trial version_*, and convert that single file or other few if you need to and then trash it. If you do get it, do the following:
1.- Go to the "VCD" Tab
    2.- Click on "MPEG 1 > MPEG 2",
3.- It will ask you for the input file, select your MPEG 1, and then will ask you for the place to save it.
Once you have the MPEG 2, you need to trick iM08 in order to import it. Pay attention to this, since iM08 supposedly ONLY imports MPEG 2 directly from the camcorder. Do not panic, this is not correct, you can trick it doing the following.
With a USB flash memory drive, or an external hard drive, create on it a folder named MP_ROOT, inside it create a folder named 101PNV01, now put your mpg-2 files in this folder. Have iMovie open; after creating these files and putting the mpeg2's on it, disconnect the drive from your computer, now, when you re-connect, is like connecting a camera, and with iMovie open already, it will tell you that you have connected a camera etc, etc, now import into iMovie 08.
I use this to import mpeg 2's.
Remember to create this at the root level, at the very highest level in your external hard drive or USB. I do not use a USB stick because my files are very large, I use a external hard drive, so if one does not work for you, try the other one, if you have both.

Check out this thread, it explains this and other possibilities. I do not take credit for this trick, somebody else described it.

  • Converting mpegs to a reasonable size file for final cut pro

I've been using mpeg streamclip and converting mpeg files so that I can edit them in Final Cut, but after the conversion the files are double, sometimes tripled the size they used to be. a 15 minute mpeg, once converted into quicktime format is just about 3gigs. i have some clips that are almost 3 hours, once converted, they will be way too hard to work with and burn onto dvd. i've tried multiple exports through streamclip trying to figure which would be the fastest, and be the smallest in size. if anyone has any ideas or suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it. these segments need to be edited for a job I'm working on, so they need to be done soon. thanks

If you're using DV as the format you edit with, it will take a gig for every 4.7 minutes of video... there's no way around this... Photo JPEG would likely be as large and look much the same most likely.
Quite frankly, any lower data rate resulting in smaller files will probably look pretty bad...
Hey, hard drives are cheaper than they used to be, and subclipping long clips sure makes them more manageable editorially...

  • How can i convert MPEG file to midi or wav format

    Hi,
Can any one help me in converting MPEG music file to midi or wav format.
I am trying to import it to my 3D application to run my animation but have to convert it to midi or wav format.
Can anyone help me please. Audition can do this job ?
    Steve

For a start, MIDI isn't a sound format, so you can't possibly convert mpeg to that. All MIDI is is a way of sending note-on, note-off, etc information. It stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface - gives you a bit of a clue, really...
Audition will automatically convert any file it can open to wav (that's how it works), but since you haven't said what sort of mpeg file it is (and this is significant), we can't tell you any more until you do.

After I upgraded to Mavericks, Quicktime has had to convert MPEG-4 videos to .mov.... Why? Is there a way to stop that or to change the settings?
Your question requires more information. What does MPEG-4 mean to you? What file container and which compression formats are you referring to here? Is the MPEG-4 content "standard" or proprietary. Basically, depending on the file container and the specific content, QT X v10.3 may initiate a conversion ever where the individual data tracks are fully QT compatible. Proprietary compression formats will definitely do this. In some cases, the audio or video in one source container may simply be passed through to the MOV file while in another source container, QT X v10.3 forces a conversion of that same data track. In short, there are too many variables at this point to properly answer your question or attempt to duplicate your workflow.

  • Converting MPEG file to DV File

I had a program on my computer to convert mpeg files to dv files so that I could burn them using IDVD. It was streaming clip or something like that. I found it on the apple website. I have looked and looked and cannot find the free download that I had before. If anyone knows were to go to get this streaming clip program, or anything that would help me achieve the same results in converting mpeg files to dv files, please let me know

Just found my old program download at the following link. The product is MPEG Stream Type and you can find it at this site: http://www.alfanet.it/squared5/mpegstreamclip.html

  • How do i correctly convert mpeg videos so they work on my ipod?

is someone used by using mediacoder and can tell me how i should change the options to convert mpeg files so the video and sound works on my ipod?

I have the same problem - I thought I was the only one!
I converted my mpg videos using Itunes, then transferred them to my Ipod. But, when I go to play the videos, the video works fine, but there's no audio! I think this is a problem with the muxing of the audio and video tracks. I've heard that you have to extract the audio from the mpg file so you not only have a video file, but a separate audio file. Then I guess you mate the files togethter somehow in order for it to work on the Ipod. I've heard of a program that can fix this for Macs (ffmpegx), but I have a PC.
