Copy files using Terminal

I have my Windows XP computer and my Mac connected. I would like to copy files from my Windows HDD to the Mac HDD with the help of terminal. I just know a few things here, "ls /Volumes" to view the Mounted Volumes and "cp" is to copy.. I need a specific command to place it in a path..

And you want
man cp
man ls
That should get you going. I'm assuming that since you mention /Volumes, that you already have the Windows share mounted on your Mac.

Unable to Copy File From Terminal Server to Client Share

Hi
For years client have been able to copy files from our Windows 2003 Terminal Server to their local workstation using:
copy myfile \\tsclient\mydrive\myfolder
However we upgraded to Windows 2012 Server R2 and now Windows 7 Pro clients cannot copy files. The copy function creates the file name in their local folder but no content is sent after maybe 20 minutes or so the copy function times out and they get an
error message saying that the application was unable to write to the file. I have tried this function with my Windows 8.1 workstation and the file copies properly and it works fine for older Windows XP clients. Does anyone know why Windows 7 clients
are experiencing this issue.

Hi Simon,
Initially please use latest RDP version 8.1 for windows 7 and check result.
What’s the file size which you are copying?
Does this happens for all users and on all computers?
You can try below method might resolve your case.
1. Login to remote computer using Remote Desktop (RDP).
2. Open Task Manager in the remote machine
3. Click the "Process" tab
4. Locate a program called "rdpclip.exe"
5. Right click and select "End process" to kill this program
6. Click on "File" menu in the task manager and select "New Task (Run)"
7. Type rdpclip.exe and press the button to start the process.
By killing existing instance of the rdpclip.exe and restarting the program, you can get your copy paste work again in your remote desktop.

Hi Simon,
The copy command should also work on the Windows 7 clients. Please provide the detailed error message when run the command on the Windows 7 clients.
You could also use robocopy command to achieve this.

How to recover trash emptied docx file using terminal!! please help, many recovery software doesnt work!

i accidentally deleted a .docx file today and emptied it in the trash!! i tried to use softwares like iskysoft,stellar,wondershare, but none can find the required file! I also tried to use terminal to recover my file by typing --> Tserings-MacBook-Pro:~ tseringdorjee$ mv .Trash/OS copy . but ended with
mv: rename .Trash/OS to ./OS: No such file or directory
mv: rename copy to ./copy: No such file or directory
where OS copy is the name of my .docx file! i also tried to put .docx after the file name, but it doesn't work too!
so, please help!!!

If you placed the file in the trash and emptied the trash and recovery software is unable to get the file back, I'm afraid it is gone.
You will have to resotre from backups if you any, or else try sending the drive to a commercial data recovery outfit. But it will be very expensive and the likely hood of a better outcome is not high.

Problem Copying Files using Drag and Drop in Finder

When I try to copy files from a camera's SD disk into a folder in Finder, it always seems to copy the files to some other location other than the folder I drag and dropped to. And then, when I try to redo the drag and drop, I get a message that these files already exist in the desired folder, even though I don't see them there!
Also when I create a new folder in Finder, it never places the new folder under the folder I've currently highlighted.
I'd love to hear whats going on here!

What Finder "view" option are you using, List, Icons, Columns, or Cover Flow, for this question and the one below? Are you dragging those photos onto the icon of a closed folder or somewhere else? Please describe the exact process that you're executing.

When you say "under", do you mean "within"? A new folder will be placed in the folder that's open.

Applying ACL's when copying files using SBM protocol

I' need to change the default behaviour of CMSDK when I'm copiying a file with Windows Explorer using SBM protocol in this way :
When I'm copiying a file from some branchs of my tree of directories I want that ACL to apply is the ACL of the original file and not the ACL of the user who is doing the copy. For instance:
Original file --> 'FILEA' with ACL 'AclA'
User --> 'Pepe' default ACL 'Acluser'
Copied file --> 'FILEB'
CMSDK will copy the 'FILEA' to 'FILEB' with ACL 'Acluser', but I need that ACL of 'FILEB' is 'AclA' and not 'Acluser' ( from the original file FILEA).
How could I get this ?.

Unable to copy file using Zen 4 Console One

Hi,
I get the following error message:
'Could not configure workstation for application [SPSS Activator license
update.spss 14.Testing.PSM Applications.Applications.Resources.CF] (id=2).
Problem: Unable to copy file
\\MAINCF5G\apps\appwinxp\SPSS14\licenseupdate.bat. (D018)'
I click OK.
So I am trying to copy a single file named licenseupdate.bat from the server
\\MAINCF5G\apps\appwinxp
to the local C: drive to directory C:\Program Files\SPSS 14.
The directory already exists on the PC.
Under Distribution Options: Application Files, I have set Copy if Newer.
Under Run Options Environment, I have set Run as Unsecure System User (as
the user trying to install does not have Admin rights to workstation).
Changing to Run As Normal doesn't work either.
Any idea what the problem is?

Is there any limitations in Finder when copying files using clipboard?

One day I was moving my photos from one folder to another and accidently discovered that not all of my files are copied!
What I was doing (I'm using Finder):
- Go into folder
- Cmd+A to select all files
- Cmd+C to copy them into clipboard
- Cmd+V to paste them in new location
Every folder contain about 10k files, but (I did some checks) copy operation copied only 2-3k. Every time different amount.
It was so unexpected!
Does anybody know what does it mean??

There is no clipboard limit that I'm aware of. I have copied folders containing tens of thousands of files with no problem. Seems like a bug in the OS.
Just a question, why are you copying your files when you could just drag&drop them from one folder to the other?

Why can't I change the Created Date on a file using Terminal?

I bought a used Contour helmet camera to take pictures of the kids while they're skiing, and I cannot access the camera itself to change the clock in it (USB port is broken).
I get videos from it just fine, but every time I remove the battery the date/time on the camera resets to January 2008, so my skiing videos end up someplace completely different from what I expect in iMovie.
I thought I could change the Created Date with Touch in Terminal, but it only handles the Modified Date. I know I can purchase File Date Changer 5 from the App Store to do this, but I'd like to know why I can't do it in Terminal.
Anybody know? Or know of a different way that I COULD do it in Terminal?

Don't know about Terminal, but, because you are using 10.9.x and iMovie, try the iMovie method:

My friend is using a older MacBook and is trying to save all the output of the program they are running, but their version of terminal only saves the last 10000 lines. I was wondering would I use the "tee" or "script" command?

Assuming you mean the program they are running is being run from the Terminal, then just do something like this:
myterminalcommand > ~/Desktop/myoutputfile.txt 2>&1
The 2>&1 at the end redirects messages sent to stderr to the same location as stdout so you should capture everything in the file.
If you want to run the program multiple times, the '>' will overwrite the output file. To append to the same filename, use '>>' instead.

Error when copying files using WebDav web folder

When copying a large group of files/folder to a 10gAS portal page we are randomly seeing the error: "An error occurred while copying some or all of the selected files" in Windows Explorer. Clicking "ok" will resume the file copy process.
The only error I see in the Apache log is:
[Mon Aug 2 18:00:06 2004] [error] OraDAV: Apache/OCI Error -9999/0: ORADAV: LOB was closed with active write operation
Any suggestions? I couldn't find anything on metalink, though i have logged an iTAR as well.

My AirPort Extreme card was replaced on my MacBook by Apple. Prior to this, I was getting odd errors like the one outlined above. I do not receive this issue anymore, and I think I can attribute it to the hardware issue with the card.

Copying files using .csv as reference columns as reference

I have a 30000 line CSV file that references different calls in different folders a full path than a file name that I need to copy the files to an other location
the CSV has a few columns I had to concatenate 2 for the full path ..
one column is named archivepath    the other is archivename
I found this script but its not moving the files .. it created the full folder structure but that's it .. not sure what I maybe missing

Batch file using terminal HEEELLLLPPP

All i want to do is make a batch file, make it run a .jar file with this command
java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui
This basical runs the file wich is a server with more ram
But i have made a batch file and no matter wich command, even (ls) will not work, please someone, i just need a file that will execute commands like a batch file on windows, you click it and it does what ever is in the codes.
So basicaly, i need it to a find directory using cd then run the command given. but nothing works.

I do not know what is in your hello.command file, but it very much looks like there are lines such as
{rtf1ansiansicpg1252cocoartf1038cocoasubrtf350
I do not know what that is doing there, but is is not something the shell knows how to execute.
I also made a new file, and now its saying i dont have the privileges.
Did you make the file executable using the "chmod +x filename" command?
Maybe you could post your script so we can analyze it. When you do this, put it between a pair of tags so that the forum software does not mess with its contents and steal some of the characters as formatting meta-characters
