Hanging Disconnect on Internet Connect

Even after forcing a quit quits the programme (and cannot be reused until a reboot). Bob Gold made some helpful suggestions regarding the .plist some months ago, alas, it has now returned on all my computers and I have found a solution that works on the iBooks and the G4 Powerbook, all running 10.3.9
The simplest is just trying to put to sleep, sometimes works and much more effective than force quit.
The one that works everytime for me is to download the script from
http://www.shopperturnpike.com/usefulsoftware/endhangingdisconnect.html.
This issues the killall command a few times (I think it is five with pauses), but works the first time on my machines. Internet connect can then be used without problems.
Any other ideas? It seems to be a common failing in OSX connected via British Telecom when the line does not authenticate.
George
iBook G3 & Powermac G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Thanks for this suggestion, I shall also try this. The script I mention above is also free, by the way, and also seems to work on all my computers.
The one I have used has to be used every time it hangs, does yours actually FIX the problem, albeit only for a short time? The reason for asking this is that the fault seems to have taken about a year to turn up on all three of my machines since the first was afflicted (after up-dating my 10.3).

  • My time capsule runs very slowly and keeps disconnecting my internet connection, can anyone help me please?

Hello all I have recently pulled out my 3TB Time capsule and attempted to use it to back up my all Mac network, starting with just my desktop. I gave up on it before and started using Time Machine with WD EHD's which work fine. The reason that I gave up was that the Time Capsule kept freezing and hanging and I couldn't rely on it for a back up. I have reset it to factory settings and reconnected it as per the instructions, using it to extend my network, the hub is a BT infinity setup. Anyway it looks like it is going to run, then keeps shutting down my internet connection and I suspect it is taking longer to run the backup than it should. Has anyone else had this problem or can help please?

What model is the 3TB TC??
If the computer is using Yosemite the setup of the TC needs to be right. It can also be hardware issue if you are talking about the previous gen4.
Here is a list of things that can help with yosemite.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
    Setup the TC again.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg TCgen5 for basestation and and TCwifi wireless name.
If the issue is wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. But this can be tried in the second round. ie plan on a first and second round of changes to fix this.. hopefully.. I will point out other steps that can be round2.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply with 1. but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. If the TC is main router you can skip this point. This is only an issue when the TC is bridged.
Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC. But this is important.. having IP drift all over the place when Yosemite cannot remember its own name for 5 min after a reboot makes for poor networking.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. but this change will mess up your TM backup.. so be prepared to do a new full backup. Sorry.. keep this one for second round if you want to avoid a new backup.
    5. Mount the TC disk in the computer manually.
In Finder, Go, Connect to server from the top menu,
Type in SMB://192.168.0.254 (or whatever the TC ip is which you have now made static. As a router by default it is 10.0.1.1 and I encourage people to stick with that unless you know what you are doing).
You can use name.. SMB://TCgen5.local where you replace TCgen5 with your TC name.. local is the default domain of the TC and doesn't change.
However names are not so easy as IP address.. nor as reliable. At least not in Yosemite they aren't. The domain can also be an issue if you are not plugged or wireless directly to the TC.
    6. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only. Do the same for ethernet if you use it.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
You might need to do some more work on the computer itself. eg Reset the PRAM.. has helped some people. Clean install of the OS is also helpful if you upgrade installed.
    Tell us how you go.
Someone posted a solution.. See this thread.
Macbook can't find Time Capsule anymore
Start from the bottom and work up.. I have a list of good network practice changes but I have avoided Yosemites bug heaven.
Yosemite has serious DNS bug in the networking application.. here is the lets say more arcane method of fixing it by doing a network transplant from mavericks.

  • TS1398 My iPad disconnect my internet connection

    Hello,
When I start using my "new" iPad (Google Map or whatever), all my devices (iPhone, PC and iPad) lose their internet connection.
I tried switching it off and on, I also disabled the auto adjustment of the brightness as advised on certain forums. I even tried to reset network settings but none of these worked.
    Any idea please ?
Thanks in advance for your help,
    Best regards,
    Bertrand

One more detail, the internet connection works again for all my devices after 3 to 4 minutes.
And this problem occurs each time I take my iPad into my hands.
    Thanks again

  • Airport Express disconnects wired internet connection when attempting to extend Airport Extreme WiFi network

I just purchased and airport express to extend my wifi network.  My base station is an airport extreme, I have one wired connection and a wifi network.  When I go through the recommended steps to set up the express and "extend the network", the airport extreme will no longer connect to the internet via ethernet.  I have tried various settings and can't seem to resolve the problem.  Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Ok so we now have a solution to the problem.   A friend of mine came round to work this out with me last night and we were able to get it working, but it is not as easy as I had hoped.  Fisrtly we plugged the airport express into my router using the ethernet cable  (for this I am using an Airport Express Base Station") and in airport utilities selected the airport express.  In edit, we then gave the airport express a new range of IP address which did not conflict with any of the other applications that I have already assigned.  We also named the Airport Express with a distinguishable name.  We then waited for the changes to be registered then unplugged the Airport Express from the router.  I then plugged my AppleTV via HDMI into a tv to test it and selected the new wifi network with the new Airport Express distinguishable name.  I was able to watch a video that I have on my ipad directly on my tv without being connected to the internet, and was able to play Airplay presentations.
No the easiest solution, and certainly not something that anyone at Apple has talked me through in my lengthy conversations with them at Applecare.
    Hope this helps.

  • Script for internet connect with dial up modem, check email & log off

I am looking for a script to connect to the internet (with dial up) external apple modem, then check email and then log off and disconnect. I don't want any other applications opening internet connect? A would use this script file with ical and could have my email checked and open up in the morning before I leave for work....being that we have dial up the entire process of connecting to the internet and checking email is time consuming. Any help is greatly appreciated. thks

You need some additional logic in there - as written, the script will launch mail, then immediately disconnect the internet connection.
At the very least you need to add a delay before disconnecting to allow for Mail to download awaiting messages.
Since you cannot predict how long a delay you'll need, a better approach would be to query Mail.app and wait until it's idle, like:
    tell application "Mail"
launch -- doesn't need to be frontmost
check for new mail -- get all mail
repeat until (get background activity count) = 0
delay 2 -- wait 2 seconds before checking again
      end repeat
    end tell
In this way the script forces a check of new mail (don't assume that Mail.app is set to auto-check, especially for dialup users who often compose mail offline and may have automatic checking disabled), and it hangs around until Mail.app has finished downloading all the messages.

  • Gui for "internet connect"

anyone know if/were i could find a more in depth gui to replace/overlay mac's "internet connection". my complaints: stumblers can tell me a lot whilst the "internet connection" is fairly basic and uninformative. it often shows that i am connected to a wpa network that is not mine nor have i attempted to connect to that access point. i would like to be in control and informed right? -thanks

  • Itunes hangs on disconnect / reconnect of internet connection

Quite often I do stream internet radio stations using Itunes. I am listening through my BeoCenter2. When I swich of the BeoCenter2, I often forget to
stop the stream in Itunes. This would not a problem, but because my internet provider drops the connection every night for one second.
This disconnect / reconnect is not handled by Itunes correctely. From this moment on Itunes is frozen and hangs. Itunes has to be killed.
Any advice? Or is there a bug fix on the way?

    Hi,
Thanks for that - good advice I'll file a report.
I've just switched to streaming music this way after struggling for many years with a Logitech Duet.  When it worked  it was brilliant, but very flaky at times.  Naively I thought I would switch to something totally reliable and sorted.  To be fair the remote app works brilliantly on iphone and no problem with streaming my music collection - just that, like you, I stream radio feeds too.   I cannot believe others don't have the same problem too.  My internet connection drops out several times a day, which I'm pursuing as well.
    If/when I make progress I'll post it.

  • Internet Connect Consistently Hangs On Startup

Anytime the computer is shut down and has to be restarted, Internet Connect always hangs without fail. It appears to actually connect, but quickly thereafter, I get the prompt that tells me that it's unexpectedly quit. When I try again, I'm successful. All disconnects and connections thereafter work until I shut my computer down and have to restart.
I've gone so far as to reinstall from the DVD, backing up, and selectively reinstalling third party apps, but the problem persists. Anyone else encountering this problem, which came bundled with my new 20" G5 iMac and Tiger?

    Hi, WildBill —
I hope you'll forgive if it takes me a moment to get acquainted. It's been a long time since I used Internet Connect.
How are you using it — Bluetooth, AirPort, PPoE, VPN, etc.? (I'm wondering whether something like a signal delay or connection problem may factor in to the behavior...)
Have you tried logging in to a temporary, "test" user account (with administrative privileges) in an effort to determine whether the problem is restriced to your user account or system-wide? This and other general troubleshooting tactics are described in KnowledgeBase Article Mac OS X: How to troubleshoot a software issue.
When you say "I get the prompt that tells me that it's unexpectedly quit" —are we talking about the application actually "crashing" ?  If so, have you used Console to look in ~/Library/Logs/ for an Internet Connect.crash.log? This may help to identify the specific sequence that's causing the problem.
Looking forward to hearing back from you.
    Hope this helps... and
    Good luck!
    Dean

  • After updating to windows 8.1 my wire less internet connection is getting disconnected intermittently

After updating to windows 8.1 my wire less internet connection is getting disconnected intermittently .I am unable to predict the frequency or time
period this is occurring. But now i am really struggling to use the internet.I have tried my laptop vendor support and Microsoft support both failed to provide a solution. Please help me to resolve.I have installed the Wifi driver from real tek site many times
,but that is not helping.kindly provide me the guidance.
when i searched in internet i am able to see many people are struggling with this same issue .

    Hi,
You can refer to this blog, and try to roll back to the older version of network adapter driver to check the results. Other suggestions can also be used to troubleshoot your issue.
Windows 8.1 Wifi showing "limited" or "No Internet Access"

Meanwhile, please check with the manufacturer of your router to update the firmware.
If the issue persists, please help to collect following information for further research:
    1)            Enable RAS Tracing on the client.
    -              Over an Administrative command prompt.
    -              C:\> netsh ras set tracing * enabled
    2)            On the client enable the following log as well:
    -              Over an Administrative command prompt.
    -              C:\> netsh trace start scenario=netconnection capture=yes tracefile=c:\net.etl
    3)            Now, turn off Wireless adapter on the client and Turn it back ON for making it to authenticate. Once it fails to connect to the Wireless network, proceed to the next step.
    4)            Disable RAS Tracing on the client.
    -              Over an Administrative command prompt.
    -              C:\> netsh ras set tracing * disabled
    5)            On the client disable the following log as well:
    -              Over an Administrative command prompt.
    -              C:\> netsh trace stop
    6)            Please provide the following files:
    From the Client:
    a)            ZIP folder of C:\Windows\Tracing
    b)            C:\Net.etl and C:\Net.cab
Upload these files in SkyDrive and post back the shared link.
    Keep post.

  • How to disconnect internet connection in Time Capsule and reconnect without restarting the whole device?

Hi, I would be very grateful if someone could tell me how to disconnect internet connection in Time Capsule and reconnect without restarting the whole device?
The thing is that as I have a dynamic IP address, everytime I restart the internet connection my IP address changes. I sometimes need it to change, so I need to restart the connection. I don't know another way to restart the connection than restarting the whole Time Capsule.
    Thanks!!
PD: the computer I use is Windows based, using the Airport Utility for Windows, but I also have a MacBook Pro I could use and an iPhone too.

The utility in windows is very like Mac so the screenshots are from Mac as I don't have windows available now.
How this works depends on the setup of the TC.. which you did not tell us.. you cannot change anything if you do not have the TC as the main router in the network.
So on the internet tab you need to share a public IP address.
On the next tab where you set IP address.
    Click the renew IP address.
It might work.. and it might not.. the problem is you are not disconnecting the network.. sometimes the hard disconnection is required before the address will renew..
What about unplugging the WAN port.. then click renew the IP which will fail.. then plug the wan back in again.
In the end it is easier and faster to power cycle the TC.

  • WRT54GS - Internet Connection Stopping/Hanging

    Hi,
Just got the WRT54GS, had it about a week.
Whenever I hit an internet site, it will load about 80% of it and stop or hang. If i refresh the page it will finish downloading it (most of the time).
This is happening to all computers accessing the router, both wireless and the one that is wired (Ethernet) in.
I know it's not the internet connection itself, as I can use it without going through the router without any issues.
I've upgraded the firmware and played with a few of the settings without resolution.
Any ideas would be helpful as this is getting fairly annoying especially as getting a Linksys was supposed to solve all my networking issues.
    My info:
    Router - WRT54GS v7
    Firmware- 7.50.5
    Connection - DSL
Computers - 6 total (although normally 3 at the most at a time) all running XP sp3.
    Encryption - WEP 128
Wireless Network Mode - G (all computers are G compliant)
    Thank you for your time.
    Troy

    Thank you for your reposes.
Tried the above suggestions to no real success.
My latest shot is that i've changed the encryption key to WPA-Personal.
It goes great guns for 2 minutes ... then sits for about 20 seconds and then goes great guns for 2 minutes.
    Very frustrating.
Is it possible that I got a bad router to begin with? Is there really any way to tell?
Is it possible that one of my neighbors have a router that interferes with mine? What would cause the 2 minutes on 20 seconds off?
    Thoughts?
    Thank you

  • N97 The internet connection would not disconnect a...

    Dear guys,
I have another issue of N97.
The internet connection would not disconnect after the application is closed.
eg. OVI, internet browser, MAP, opera and all application is require internet access.
Anyone have the same issue as me or solution on this matter ?
    Best regards
    Anderson

a network operator issue might prevent the 'E' from disappearing even after the connection is closed, i had this issue a few months back, i was on vodafone back then. In my case, the connection would close but the 'E' won't disappear. I'm on Telenor now, and i don't have this issue no more. To confirm, check SETTINGS/CONNECTIVITY/CONNECTION MANAGER,
next, go to SETTINGS/CONNECTIVITY/ADMIN SETTINGS/PACKET DATA and make sure WHEN NEEDED is selected under PACKET DATA CONNECTION,
Next, make sure you don't have auto update enabled for home screen widgets.
Press and hold the red key for a while, this will force close active packet data connections.
Laugh, and the world laughs with you. Cry, and the world laughs louder :-)
