Copying binary files

Hello,
I have written a program that would allow a user to quickly copy a list of files or directories (including all files in the directories) over a socket in Java. When I am transfering text files, there are no problems, and everyhting transfers properly. However, when I try to run a Windows 32-bit binary file (.exe) after it was transfered, even though it is the exact same size as the original, Windows thinks that it's a DOS file. When Command Prompt launches, it gives me the following error:
Program too big to fit in memory.
The original file runs properly without any problems. I think that it's a case of setting the correct MIME type for the file, because I read and write (over a socket) in bytes, which should get rid of the problem of writing the incorrect character.
Any suggestions?
Thank you,
Max.

do you ever use InputStream.read()
Nope, I use InputStream.read(byte[]) instead.
I have actually solved the porblem. My problem was that I was trying to read a buffer that was 2MB in size at a time. :) When I changed it to 4096, the problem disappeared.
When I looked at the original and copied in a hex editor before I fixed the problem, I noticed the following interesting thigs:
1. the first 65 536 bytes were missing from file were missing.
2. at line 00 00 00 in the copied, the first correct code started copying, starting at line 03 00 00 in original.
Can anyone explain why this is happening? Why can't I copy more than 8192 bytes at a time (I noticed that many programs could copy 8192 properly)? Why were only the first 65 536 missing, even though I read 2MB (2 097 152)?
Again,
Thank you to everyone who replied and helped out! I greatly appreciate your help.
Thanks,
Max.

• Coded UI - Test Results/Out - The binary files are getting copied to the TestResults/Out folder

Hi,
I am using Visual Studio 2013 for developing the Coded UI Automation Scripts.
Whenever I execute a Coded UI Automation Script, the binary files are getting copied to the TestResults/Out folder.
I do not want these binary files to be copied to OUT folder, and I have tried disabling the Deployment option under Test Settings > Deployment, but still the behavior is the same.
Could you please advice, how to disable copying binary files into the Out directory.
Thanks in Advance.
Regards,
Karthick K

Hi Karthick K,
From your description, as far as I know that when we enable Tracing and HtmlLogger for Coded UI Test and then run the coded UI test, we will get the Test Results/Out folder automatically.
So it is default that the Out folder includes some files like codeduitestproject6.dll, CodedUITestProject6.pdb etc, we could not disable copying binary files into the Out directory.
However, there have a replace workaround is I suggest you can disable Tracing and HtmlLogger for Coded UI Test. After you disable the Tracing and HtmlLogger for Coded UI Test, it will not generate the Out folder.
Similarly, it will not get the binary files.

• How to copy only part of a binary file after selecting a start and stop byte?

I need to copy a selectable block of binary data from one file to a new file. The binary file is made up of several data widths (8/16/32 signed and unsigned). If I use a read binary function I will need to account for the data types within the file. I was hoping to do a copy function with a start and stop byte control. Any pointers?

The attached Rube Goldberg Code copies two arrays of clusters to two arrays of indicators.
Ben
BTW: It does so by writtng the flattened data to a fixed length file and decoding same on the read.

• Siebel 8.0.0.12 Fix Pack; Unable to get the seed from binary file.

Hello Folks,
Can anyone throw some light into what action is required on my scenario.
I have applied Fix Pack Siebel 8.0.0.12 on top of 8.0.0.11 SBA. After it is appled, I am facing a documented issue within the Release Notes for the 8.0.0.12 Fix Pack
The issue is "UNABLE TO LAUNCH URL AFTER APPLYING SIEBEL 8.0.0.12". I tried the steps given with the MR document, however, I am still having this issue.
I am also not sure what is expected at the step of; Run the following command: seedgeneratorutil myseed.dat abcdef .
It's asking me for a value to enter for seed at command prompt. "Enter the seed":
what I should give here. As an assumption values,I gave SADMIN and tried to launch but still shows up the same error
Please Assit
Steps Details from Release Notes:
UNABLE TO LAUNCH URL AFTER APPLYING SIEBEL 8.0.0.12
Component: Server Infrastructure
Subcomponent: SWSE
Product Version: Siebel 8.0.0.12
Base Bug ID: 11938270
**Users are unable to launch the URL after applying the Siebel 8.0.0.12 Fix Pack.
**Use the following workaround to address this issue:
Navigate to the eappweb/bin directory from the command line on the SWSE installation.
Run the following command:
seedgeneratorutil myseed.dat abcdef
NOTE: In the example, myseed.dat is a filename. You can give any file name you wish.
The myseed.dat file is generated in the eappweb/bin directory.
Edit eapps.cfg to include the following parameters under the SWE section:
seedfile = < complete path for myseed.dat >
Bounce the web server.
(For Linux only) Copy libmod_swe.so from the eappweb/bin folder to the web/ohs/modules folder

• After copying a file from NTFS to HFS volume, file size changed when viewing in Windows

Hi guys,
I have a Mac Air running Mavericks on a HFS partition and Windows 7 on a BOOTCAMP NTFS partition. I have some files that I want to read/write from/to both systems. Since OS X can't write NTFS and Windows can't write HFS either, and I don't want to use any 3rd-party tools/drivers, I have to adopt a "stupid" way: in OS X, I copy those files from NTFS to its HFS partition, make changes, then switch to Windows and sync them back to NTFS.
The problem is, after I copied a file from NTFS to HFS in OS X, it seemed ok. But when I switched to Windows, the very copied file in HFS partition had its size changed (bigger) although I didn't make any changes to it in OS X yet. This happens to almost every file I copied, text and binary. For those text files, I tried to open it with EditPlus in Windows and EditPlus reports the correct size on the status bar.
How could this happen?

I am not sure if this is what your seeing but...
The same unaltered file on two different volumes might use different amounts of disk space. This is because a 'disk' is divided in to 'blocks' and a block (also historically known as a 'sector') is a certain minimum size. So if disk-1 has a block size of 512 bytes and disk-2 has a block size of 1024 bytes then a file containing just 10 bytes will use up twice as much space on disk-2 as disk-1 even though it is the exact same file.
Beyond that, Macs can add additional information like Spotlight tags, labels, icons, etc. which make a file bigger. If you are modifying a file then presumably that also implies adding additional content e.g. for a Word document more text and this will make it bigger. Also depending on some programs are configured or designed 'deleting' text may only mark it as deleted and not really delete. This can apply to older versions of Word which has a 'Fast Save' feature, new versions have removed this and do a proper delete.
You would have to give more details like what you are doing to the document, what kind of document, and what the two sizes are.
Finally, there is one other potential difference, some systems and manufacturers use 1024 as a unit for measuring file and disk sizes, some use 1000. It will be the same number of bytes in each case but 1000 bytes in one case would exactly equal 1MB, and in the other it would be 0.9765MB.

• How can I open different binary files from BLOB column ?

If we store some type of binary file (XLS, DOC, PDF, EML and so on, not only pictures) in BLOB column how can I show the different contents? We use designer and forms 9i with PL/SQL.
How can I copy the files from BLOB to file in a directory or how can I pass BLOB's content to the proper application directly to open it?

The mime type is just a string as explained above (e.g. application/pdf...). There are lot of samples here and on metalink.
E.g. add a column mime_type varchar(30) to your blob table. Create a procedure similar to the following:
PROCEDURE getblob
(P_FILE IN VARCHAR2
IS
vblob blob;
vmime_type myblobs.mime_type%type;
length number;
begin
select document, mime_type into vblob,vmime_type from myblobs where docname = p_file;
length := dbms_lob.getlength(vblob);
if length = 0 or vblob is null then
htp.p('Document not available yet.');
else
owa_util.mime_header(vmime_type);
htp.p('Content-Length: ' || dbms_lob.getlength(vblob));
owa_util.http_header_close;
wpg_docload.download_file(vblob);
end if;
exception
when others then
htp.p(sqlerrm);
END;
Create a DAD on your application server (refer to documentation on how to create a DAD).
Display the blob from forms (e.g. on a when-button-pressed trigger):
web.show_document('http://myserver:port/DAD/getblob?p_file=myfilename','_blank');
For storing blobs in a directory on your db server take a look at the dbms_lob package.
For storing blobs in a directory on your app server take a look at WebUtil available on OTN.

• Firefox crashed when I try to download a binary file

In this instance it is IE8 which I am trying to download (for business purposes I need Activex controls). When I currently open IE it runs as a process rather than an application. I have tried to download IE8 and google's Chrome but Firefox crashes as soon as I try to save the Binary files.

Sorry you are having problems. Can you give an example preferably of some small publicly available file and the site you are trying to download it from ?
As a simple example of a download (ok it is a .png image file not not a .exe file) but can you try to download a copy of your avtar/icon, as used on these forums. In Windows one method is that you right click & should get an option save.
Mine alongside uses the link
* https://support.mozilla.com/media/uploads/avatars/avatar-257447.png
Are you able to download such an image, then see it in your download manager, and find it on your computer.
Once you have got Firefox to save your binary file you can use it. In the case of the .exe file you are trying to download that should be usable as intended with your Windows Operating System, the avatar also should be easily opened and viewed.
P.S.
You could try installing the add-on https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/opendownload-10902/ if you wished to adapt Firefox to run .exe files instead of just save them.

Hi

Hi Venkat,
I think this isn't the best forum to answer your question but I'll try.
You've lost your DATABASE FILES (means DBF files, control files (CTL), redo logs)? Correct?
Or did you loose also the Oracle Home where the software has been installed?
If you've lost your Oracle installation than you might do the following:
1) Install 8.1.7.0 software on your standby server
2) Install patch set 8.1.7 4 into this home
3) Metalink-Note:70233.1 will describe the full process of creating an 8i standby database from your PROD.
If you use RMAN than please have a look into Metalink-Note:203980.1 and Note:118409.1 - it'll describe also the init.ora parameters necessary for a standby
You'll find a description of an ideal init.ora for the standby in ML Note:139809.1 and specific for Data Guard 8i here: ML-Note:132991.1
Kind regards

• Writing binary files & trouble with no unsigned byte type

I've got a fair amount of Java experience, enough to know what I'm doing most of the time but I do have a vast experience with C & C++ which helps my Java. I've stumbled across a problem when trying to write out files in binary.
If I was to write out a binary file, I would always choose C/C++ to do this because simply because I'm at ease with the implementation.
I've now written a Java program which needs to output a file in binary and I'm having real issues doing the most simple things because of no unsigned support.
I want to write out elements byte-by-byte and make use of the 8-bits provided in the byte type in Java.
Let's assume I've done my processing and I end up with an int. I know that this int is 0-255 in value. I now want to pack it into a byte and write it to my file. How do I go about assigning the byte without Java 'converting' it to a signed byte? I simply want to copy the lower 8-bits of the int and duplicate them into the byte variable - no conversion.
In C you would do something like this:
char mySignedChar = *( (char*)&(unsigned char)myInt ) );
What's the Java equivalent? Am I going about this the right way?

Whether a byte is signed or unsigned only matters if one is doing arithmetic on it. If the int is 0-255 then you just cast to a byte using
byte theByte = (byte)theIntValue;When reading back you just use
int theByteAsAnInt = theByte & 0xff;

• Reading a binary file to string variable does not populate correctly

Hi, I am new to Adobe Air/Flex and I'm trying to read a
binary file which also contains text in "cleartext". The problem
I'm having is that when I call FileStream.readUTFBytes method, only
the first 6 characters are showing up in my string variable
"contents" when I debug it in FlexBuilder or use a trace command
and debug it. I have also tried with other types of files but I
have a similar problem unless it's a non-binary file.
Am I doing something incorrectly or should I be reading a
binary file differently than the way I'm reading it currently?
The source code is shown below.
TIA,
Magnus

<mx:WindowedApplication xmlns:mx="
http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml"
layout="absolute">
<mx:Script>

import flash.filesystem.File;
private function readFiles():void{
var feedFile:File = File.userDirectory.resolvePath( "Local
Settings/Application Data/Microsoft/Feeds/AppScout~.feed-ms" );
var stream:FileStream = new FileStream();
stream.open( feedFile, FileMode.READ );
var contents:String =
stream.readUTFBytes(stream.bytesAvailable);
trace(contents);
stream.close();

</mx:Script>
<mx:Button x="121" y="66" label="Button"
click="readFiles()" />
</mx:WindowedApplication>

It's difficult to tell what it is, it looks like a binary
pipe symbol but I can copy it from TextPad for example. Some of the
characters following it cannot be copied from TextPad which I
assume is because it's null. I can read the whole file in C#/.Net
and assign it to a string variable without any problems but perhaps
Air is somewhat limited to binary content.

• The binary file processing in PDA device (LabVIEW PDA Module)

To whom it may concern,
I created a VI application, which should read some binary files and transform them to waveforms shown in the Waveform Graph. I implemented it with Mobile/PDA module. This application runs successfully on my desktop, that is, on the Labview Front Panel. However, when I run it on "Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC Device" (a PDA has been already connected to the PC), all the windows, menus, buttons are displayed correctly, the only thing wrong is that the waveform can't be shown in the Waveform Graph. So, I wonder whether the Windows Mobile system will automatically modify the binary file format a little when I copy them from the PC to my PDA so that the original VI can't process it as what I expected in PC execution. Or, are there any requirements for the programs that will be executed in actual Windows Mobile Device?
Thanks a lot for any comments and suggestion.

Thanks, Jeremy,
I used LabVIEW 8.5.1. I rechecked and debugged the VI. The problem is not due to the Waveform Graph. I set an indicator after the Read File unit, in both PC Front Panel and PDA Front Panel. As I described before, when I run it in the PC Front Panel, the indicator could show the right values read from the file. But when I switch to PDA Device Front Panel, the indicator shows zero (invalid values), which demonstrate that the data is not accessed from original files.
The units I used are shown as follows:
File Dialog ---> Open/Create/Replace File ---> Get File Size ---> Read From Binary File (Here I set an indicator, no values read from the file, but if run in PC, correct values will be shown).
In this case, I guess the problem should come from the transfer (copy operation) of the file from PC to PDA. Or the operation behavior for LabVIEW Read File unit is a little different for PDA implementation from its PC implementation.
If you want more information, including the original binary file or VI, please let me know. Thanks a lot.

• How to get rid of a binary file with firefox that pop up allthe time?

each time that i open moxilla firefox a box asking if I want to save or cancel the binary file. I have tried to ignore ti however it has become a bother. How do I stop the box from popping up ?

Hi
if you mean http://db.tidbits.com/ - I didn't get any popups in a few minutes of browsing there, this without any blocking software. If you're seeing the very same ad popup window from differing sites, then it'd sure be worth looking at whether or not your mac or router or isp is using some rogue dns server.
DNS - Domain Name System
it translates domain names meaningful to humans into the numerical (binary) identifiers associated with networking equipment for the purpose of locating and addressing these devices worldwide. An often-used analogy to explain the Domain Name System is that it serves as the "phone book" for the Internet by translating human-friendly computer hostnames into IP addresses. For example, www.example.com translates to 192.0.32.10.
to borrow from wiki.
DNS servers can be chosen in your router or in your mac at System Preferences-Network-Advanced-DNS tab, If no special dns servers are selected, your router will usually accept the isp's suggestion, so you'll be using theirs, for better or for worse.
The most common place for any 'rogue' dns to be set, is in System Preferences-Network-Advanced-DNS tab... look there on your mac, and see if any numbers are visible. Copy them & paste here, then we'll know what's going on.
