Copying dvds (legally..)

hi there,
i'm trying to figure out how to copy a dvd. the dvd is not encrypted but the files that it holds are such that they play in dvd player when you pop the dvd in. i need to copy it so that it continues to do that, but for some reason when i try to copy the files on the macbook they are just shortcuts to the disc, which doesn't allow me to copy them to a new dvd.
the dvd is not encrypted in any way and i have authorization to copy it... if i only knew how
thanks.

Duplicate a CD or DVD
1. Insert the DVD/CD;
2. Open Disk Utility, and select the DVD/CD from the left side list (select the DVD/CD icon on top);
3. from the DU File menu select New | Disk Image from Disk 1;
4. Choose to format the disk image as DVD/CD Master, name the disk image and click Save;
5. When the .cdr file is finished select it with mouse and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info and check the box to lock the file;
6. Choose the .cdr file from the left side list, click Burn, and insert a new, blank DVD or CD.

    Is there a way to copy my legal dvds to my iMac?

    Legally, no.
    It is illegal to break the encryption on commercial DVDs and to copy them, you need to break the encryption.
    You cannot drag or copy tracks from a DVD (unless it is a standard data DVD, which is not a movie DVD.).

    I bought a movie with the digital copy and it gives me option to redeem it with iTunes, but when I type in the redeem code it shows a message saying: " you must insert your digital copy dvd in this computer in order to redeem this code" . The dvd is in. WTH? This is especially with FOX movies, I never have trouble with Universal Picture movies.

    Thanks for your reply, but you might have misunderstood it a bit. I'm NOT trying to buy a movie. ****, I'm not even in the actual Apple Store, when this happens I'm in the library not the Store part of iTunes.
    To clarify - I have purchased a physical copy of a movie which came with another physical copy which contains the digital copy. The digital copy is on the DVD, all I need is just to transfer this file to my iPod Touch, for example, I'm not trying to download it from the store or repurchase it and it's not any gift code that I've received, the digital copy is on the disc. This is the first time ever that I've purchased something on a disc and I'm not allowed to access it because the disc hasn't been purchased within my country.
    So again - I'm not attempting any purchase or download any purchased digital copy - it's on a DVD I own physically so... why is even the region of my Store relevant, the code I enter is (as I assume) just supposed to check if it's a legal genuine copy (which it is, as I've said - there are 6 discs in the pack: 3 movies on 3 Blu-rays and 3 DVD containing these digital copies of them). If I own it, I think that's proof enough that I have the right to use it. I just don't get it. I fully agree with you and understand your point if there was any purchase going on here, but it's not, it's just - I put a disc into my computer and I can't access it

    I would like permission to copy dvds to my SSD for faster installation.
    I would also like to know if the standard multi-volume installer methods work with Master Collection CS5 installation where discs are organized into

    what disc number for acrobat 9, if any?
    can I copy the content disc (no installer)?
    or do you use a different method? of course once it's on the SSD, it would be impossible to change discs as the installer currently requests using discs.

  • Script for automatically copying DVDs/CDs to disk on insert?

    I just started to copy about 500 Data-DVDs (and some CDs) to an external FAT32 USB-disk. I do that by dragging the mounted disk from the desktop to the drive while holding down the option-key.
    Is there a way to automate that? Would be easier if the Mac started the copying whenever a new DVD/CD is mounted on the desktop. And ejecting the disk by itself would be nice too. That way I'd be sure to notice that another copy is done and could put in the next disk ...

    So, when "/dev/disk1" is my MacBooks internal optical drive, how do I address the external USB-HD?
    Apple-Script doesn't want me to use the path: "/Volumes/FILME/" ...
    You'll want to leave the superdrive path the same but change the duplicate to desktop part to your own external hd. I'm pretty sure you get it just making sure.
    Applescript doesn't mind the path you chose just the UNIX style slash format oppose to mac colon delimintated. Try this
    (/Volumes/FILME/...) as POSIX path

    I want to copy dvds, mostly my own which includes dvd copies of VHS movies I wrote as well as home dvds. I tested DVD-Cloner based on reviews but it seems to only copy dvds it wants to and others it won't. There's no pattern and their support said "sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't." What you want to do is select the files you want to move then go File>Relocate Masters. Your images will then be referenced to a location you select. Aperture will still continue to manage the images, but the external hard drive must be connected if you want to make adjustments. Aperture will retain Metadata and any adjustment information. Your original images will stay unmodified on your external drive.

  • Help! Copying DVD onto hard drive to watch at a later date- HOW???

    I am very new to the world of MacBooks. Does anybody know if I am able to copy DVDS onto my hard drive to watch at a later date without having to carry disks. After some reasearch it appears i may have to download a program 'Mac Ripper.' Is this necessarily the case or am I able to do this without having to down load this program? I have the latest MacBook Pro OS X 10.4.8.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Yes, you'll need a ripping application of which MacTheRipper is a good choice. Once you've ripped a DVD to your hard drive you can play it using DVD Player (selecting "Open DVD Media" from the File menu).

  • Copying DVD's

    I am just trying to copy a DVD that was recorded in a stand alone recorder. ( Panasonic DMR T3040) It is a project I produced in Final Cut Pro and then burned via firewire to the Panasonic unit. I am using Toast to make the copy but I keep getting this...the file VTS011.VOB could not be accessed. ( Data Fork -36) Also...Couldn't complete the last command because there was an I/O error. Your disc may be copy protected. Sounds like I have it protected, but I see no menu in the Panasonic unit that makes it protected. Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

    Why, when you have Toast?
    I am using Toast to make the copy but I keep getting this...the file VTS011.VOB could not be accessed. ( Data Fork -36) Also...Couldn't complete the last command because there was an I/O error. Using VLC, see what VTS_01.1.VOB looks like. It may be copyprotected, or as noted above, a bad disk or bad recording.
    I regularly copy DVDs that I burn on my standalone Panasonic, using this MBP, but they are created from on-air recordings. I have never used the FW port on it.
    What you are doing even if it works seems rather round-about.

  • Copy DVD's?

    Does anyone know if there is a way to copy DVD's in any of Apples software? I have a DVD that a friend made for me and is ok with me copying. I want to take some of the content and add into a movie/slide show I am making but I can not get it into a file or form that will let me save it and then add it to my movie. The DVD I am trying to copy content from is NOT a store bought movie. It is clips from a friend burned onto a DVD. Any help is appreciated.

    Is it possible? Yes but I don't recommend re using content that was burned to DVD even if it isn't copy protected and here's why ..... Video already burned to DVD-R is highly compressed into mpeg 2 normally and there will be some loss in quality when converting it back to QT for use with i-apps (which may be possible with such 3rd party apps as visual hub, mpeg streamclip, and Dvdxdv (see links below):

  • How do you save a copy dvd to your external hard drive

    I have managed to make a copy dvd to dvd thanks to all your help. Now I need to know how to save a copy dvd to an external hard drive. Your help will be appreciated. Please reply in as simple terms as possible because I am not up on the latest phrases and computer jargon lol

    Mount the DVD on your desktop, then open it and pull VIDEO_TS folder to your desktop.  Put VIDEO_TS folder in a folder and label it so you will know what it is and then move that folder to your external drive.  The VIDEO_TS folder than can be burned into another dvd or played by VLC.
