Corrupt Czech characters in Table of Contents

Hi everyone.
I am working on a pretty big help project in Czech. This is not something I started from scratch, I took it over from a colleague who left our company recently, so I don't know much about how it was done.
The project is made of 3 components, resulting in 3 CHMs which are then copied in the same folder with another CHM using some sort of algorithm.
Once all these files (4 CHMs in total) are copied in a software's Help folder, they are displayed as a single component when you clic the Help button in the software - meaning you see a complete TOC with chapters from all 3 files).
The problem is, when I compile the individual CHMs, I get the message "HTML help settings has unsupported characters for the chosen language. Do you want to continue?"
If I continue, the file is compiled and when I open it, the TOC looks ok. However, when I copy it with the other files and open it in the software (a CAD type program) some characters are replaced with someting else:
I am using Robo Help 10 and the font in the files is Verdana. I read on another thread that the font might be the problem, but I don't know how to change it in all the files (except perhaps from Internet Options in the chm directly?)
My regional settings are also set to Czech when I compile the file, so there shouldn't be a problem. However, every time I compile, I get that message and corrupt characters are displayed in the software's Help.
Can anyone help with this?
Thanks in advance.
Christina

I'm using RH 9.
From my experience figuring out character issues like this can sometimes more of an art than a science. That's what it seems like anyway.
Some issues at play can be:
Desktop language for non-unicode programs should match the output - From Control Panel, in the Region and Language dialog box, on the Administrative tab, make sure the language for non-unicode programs is set to the target language.
RoboHelp language settings - Under File | Project Settings, ensure you've set the Language in RH to Czech for all the projects. In addition, in the Single Source Layouts pod, right-click on the output and choose Properties and in the Language drop down, make sure it's set to Czech.
Character encoding in the file itself - Open the file (in this case .hhc) inside of a text editor like Notepad++ and from the Encoding menu, check its character encoding. From experience, this should be set to Encode in UTF-8 or Encode in UTF-8 without BOM.
Character encoding in the XML tag - Also in Notepad++, check the encoding in the first <?xml ...> tag in line 1. From my hhc file we translated into Czech, it's set to <xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>

  • Table of Contents vanishes when trying to update or regenerate in CS6

I'm working with InDesign CS6 on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit
This is an old, legacy document. Today, I needed to remove two pages, so of course, I need to update my table of contents and index. I had no problems with the index - it regenerated just fine. The TOC is another matter. I clicked Layout > Update Table of Contents. I got the message stating that the contents was updated. However, what actually happened was the TOC text vanished! And, it actually is gone because I can see two empty paragraph markers where the TOC used to be. I've tried regenerating it instead of doing the update. Same result - it's gone.
I'm still fairly new to InDesign, so I'm not sure what I can do to troubleshoot this. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Sounds like ID doesn't think there are any paragraphs with the style names you've selected for inclusion.
But I'm not a fan of direct conversion of legacy files because these sorts of things, or worse, happen a lot. Try this: Remove minor corruption by exporting

  • How can I include, in the table of content, a title that I have put on a shape?

    Hello all,
    1. I have a table of content
    2. I have added shapes
    3. I wrote text (titles. subtitles) on the shapes
    4. They do not appear in the table of content.
    5. They only appear in the table of content if they are not on a shape.
    Pages 5.5.2
    Can you help?
    Law

    Hi Law,
Text in a shape or a text box will not feature in the table of contents.
To get a colour behind your titles, type them into your document (not a shape). Format as Heading or some other paragraph style the TOC will recognise.
Select the title text and Format Panel > Text > Font > Gearwheel > Advanced Options.
Choose Character Fill Color and choose a colour from the palette (left) or colour circle (right).
Example Titles (all on the same page for a smaller screen shot).
Chapter 3 (in a coloured Text Box or Shape) does not appear in the TOC:
    Hint for cheats :
To give the titles a wider Character Fill Colour, add some Tab characters before and after.
    Regards,
    Ian.

Hi. I've been trying to rip wavs with grip but it was unable to locate any audio cd even though I could explore it from my desktop (xfce 4.10) and I am part of the optical group. Because of this, I tried running cdparanoia from the terminal.
Running the next command: cdparanoia -vsQ displays the next warning:

You removed all mailboxes (.mbox files) located within this problem account named folder at Home > Library > Mail and the same occurs when re-launching Mail?
The TableofContents file is a package file for a .mbox so it is hidden.
I'm not sure how you removed all mailboxes for this account but quit Mail first and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail > this POP account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account). Move the account named folder to the Desktop.
Launch Mail and if it launches successfully without locking up and quitting, a new account named folder will be created automatically by Mail within the account named folder.
All email clients have limits and the recommended size limit for a Jaguar or Panther mailbox is 1GB and for Tiger Mail, 2GB.
An "overstuffed" mailbox issue can occur at any mailbox size (which means the mailbox has some corruption and/or is over the recommended size limit) but is more likely to occur depending on the number and size of message attachments contained in a mailbox and especially as a Jaguar or Panther mailbox approaches or exceeds 1GB in size.
Since an account's Inbox mailbox is usually the most active mailbox, it is not a good idea to use an account's Inbox mailbox as the final storage location for all received messages not deleted.

  • In design table of Contents

    Can anyone help please?
I have a problem with creating table of contents and changing the order of the from paragraph styles. For example, in the document I have the title and author set as style. In the TOC I want the author to come first followed by the title with a page number. I'm getting it to almost work but page numbers are off.
    Thanks

In the TOC you have two options for order, page order or alphabetical. If you use page order, ID is going to list things in the order it finds them on the page, and it starts looking in the upper left corner and works down before moving to the right.
You may be able to solve your problem by making sure the Author's name is in a frame that extends further to the left than the chapter title frame. A screen shot of the page in question would be a big help, with frame edges and invisible characters showing. Use the camera icon onthe editing page of the website to embed the image.

  • Table of contents file not taking book files into account

    Hi everyone,
I've used Indesign's book panel to manage the chapters in a book that I've typeset. I set up the table of contents style (in a TOC document which is part of the books panel) and made sure that it used all the book chapters when compiling the table of contents by checking the option in the TOC styles diaglogue box.
For some reason, the table of contents is ignoring all of the styles in the chapter files so it's not including anything in the table of contents other than a few headings that are within the file that contains the table of contents.
I'm noticing that Indesign is creating a whole lot of duplicate files with a string of numbers appended to the file name, eg.
    Newbook_Cha531549083577
These seem to duplicates of the chapter files but I have no idea why Indesign is creating them so I'm wondering whether I've got some corruption happening and whether this may be causing the problem with the table of contents.
Has anyone had a similar problem and if yes, is there any solution?
    Really appreciate any advice.

    Peter,
I'm having the same problem as gwh. The TOC won't go beyond the first document. All my style names are the same. I don't have style groups.
To make the book I began with one long document that included all the chapters. I broke it into chapters by copying and pasting into new .indd documents (each one created by Save As from the first) and adding all those documents to the book.
Generating the TOC from the one long .indd document works perfectly. I just can't get it to generate from the book (.indb) doc.
I have all the documents in the book open. I have the first one active (in front). I generate the TOC, and I get only the entries for the first document. Here's a screenshot of my TOC box. I must be missing something really simple, huh?  (I'm using CS5)

  • Table of Contents Issue/Question

Hi everyone, I hope I can put my question accurately into words.
I'm working on a 450 page product catalog in Indesign CS5 for the mac.  The catalog has 7 main sections, in which there are numerous smaller sections. I need to create a table of contents for these smaller sections, however, my issue is this;  my table of contents is based on the product names which I've applied a paragraph style to, but, also included on the same line that the product name is, are several small icons.  I used the library function to put these icons into place.  I put my curser where I wanted the icons to be, went to the library, right clicked on the icon I wanted, and selected place item.  I found this to be the easiest way since there were approximately 1500 products in the catalog.  So, my issue is, now that I'm creating a mini-table of contents for these numerous sections, the icons are included in my table of contents, which I don't want.  I can manually go in and delete each icon, but I'm thinking there has to be a faster way.  I thought of possibly a grep style but can't figure out how to make that work.
Any help would be appreciated!  It's going to take a while to delete each one of those.  I hope I've described this accurately; please feel free to ask any questions if it's not clear.
    Thanks so much!
    Annette

Oh my gosh, that did it!  Thank you sooooo much!
I couldn't figure out how to choose just those characters because I hadn't designated them as anchored objects; that was throwing me, but I guess Indesign saw them as such.
Thanks again, you've saved me hours of work!
    Sincerely,
    Annette

  • Mail crashes while trying to read "Table of Contents"

Whenever I try to open Mail, it sits there trying to read the table of contents, after about 30 seconds, it starts to play with the beach ball, then quits. I've tried repairing disk, permissions, and removing all the files I can think would help. I've run out of ideas, and would really like to get this fixed.
P.S. I have 3 other accounts on my computer, and they get mail from the same place, and don't have any problems.
P.P.S. I have 2882 messages in my inbox, and roughly 20 GB disk space left.

You removed all mailboxes (.mbox files) located within this problem account named folder at Home > Library > Mail and the same occurs when re-launching Mail?

  • RH7: Corrupted Special Characters in TOC, Glossary, Favorites, etc.

When I generate a .chm from a Japanese, Polish, Russian or
Chinese RoboHelp 7 HTML Help, the special characters are corrupted
on the .chm file’s Contents, Search, Favorites, and Glossary
tabs as well in the HTML Help window's title bar.
For instance the Russian topic title
    “Использование
    приложения”
    is shown approximately as
    “Éñïîëücîâàíèå
    ïdéëîæåíèèÿ”
on the TOC tab, making it useless for navigation purposes.
The fonts were initially also corrupted on the TOC inside the
RH7 project itself until I added charset=UTF-8 info in the
head/meta of the hhc files. However, there's still no joy when I
    generate HTML Help output.
I found a reference to someone with a similar problem with a
RH7 Web help project where the solution was to add UTF-8 BOM to the
very beginning of the files. Have tried adding UTF-8 BOM to the hhc
or xpj files, using both Notepad and Dreamweaver, but with no
result. Someone also recommended the installation of the required
language packs – I tried, but again without improvement.
Have you experienced something similar and found a solution,
please share your knowledge with me.

I'm no expert in this area but I am beginning to acquire some
knowledge of the problems in this area.
First question is, I believe, are you using a unicode font?
It might be worth trying something such as Arial Unicode.
I believe the BOM stuff is relevant only to webhelp.
If changing the font does not work. Please contact me direct
    via my website.

  • Superscript single character in table of contents

  • Character override in Table of Contents and Index

Am using a Stone Sans Open Type phonetic font for several characters in headings and in index markers. When Table of Contents or Index generates, the phonetic characters are not displaying in the override font. All characters display in the base font, and the characters that have the phonetic font override display as errors. Have tried using a Character Style in the heading to change those characters (and making sure the same Character Style is in the Index document), and have tried using manual overrides to change those characters. Same results. Any suggestions?

@KH Allstars – What kind of error do you see displayed? Missing glyphs?
One possible solution would be a GREP Search/Replace or a GREP Style, that is applying the right Character Style for the phonetic forms.
We need two things to make that work:
    1. A "yes" to the question:
Are all Unicode values of the phonetic font distinct from the Unicode values of the regular font?
    If yes, we could:
    2. Make a GREP representation of a list, or better: a range of Unicode values and apply a Character Style to it, when found. Could be a GREP Style in a Paragraph Style.
To test this, just apply the base font to an already well formatted text with the phonetic font. If ALL glyphs showing as missing we are on the save side and could check for their Unicode range(s).

  • Empty entry in table of contents

I have created a couple of table of contents recently and in every instance they added a blank entry at the end.  In most cases this is OK as I can either delete it or simply force the entry to be overset but I'd prefer it not be created at all.  Has anyone else had this problem and what did you do to fix it or keep it from happening in the first place?

If you "Show Invisible Characters", does it display as a paragraph break, or a soft line break, or perhaps as something else?
A quick test shows that ID will not include totally empty paragraphs that are tagged with one of your include-in-TOC style paragraph styles. If there is just a single space on that line, ID will not consider it to be empty and so it will appear in your TOC -- but followed with a page number, as per instructions. Only if you happened to tag one-space paragraphs with some style and that same style is to be included in your TOC without a page number, you would see it as a blank line.
(Peter was a bit faster and has made more TOCs than I --. Yep, that blank at the end comes and goes of its own free will.)

  • Remove / change dots in Table of contents

    Hi guys,
I have a table of content (standard) in Indesign.
But under each item is a black dotted line.
    1. How can I change this dotted line to grey?
    2. Change the line style to a stripe or something.
    thanks

In the paragraph style check the section Paragraph Rules (and use the dropdown to investigate both Rule Above and Rule Below -- I think it has the Rule Below active). Check the box or clear it next to the dropdown to turn the rule on or off.
A tab leader is a character or set of characters (you can use spaces, for example, to spread apart dots, or combine a dot and an underscore, or a bullet and a hyphen for a decorative look) that fills the space occupied by the tab character. There's a field in either the Tabs palette or in the Tabs section of the paragraph style where you can enter the character(s) once you set the tab position and select the tab marker on the ruler.
I prefer a custom underline (applied as a style) on the tab if you can create the look you want with ID's stroke styles because you have more control over weight and positioning than you do with the tab leader.

  • Corrupted Chinese characters shown while connecting to Sybase

    SQL Developer experts,
While I connect to Sybase DB 11 via SQL developer 2.1.1 with 'jtds-1.2.5' JDBC driver, but I see corrupted Chinese characters from SQL developer, the Sybase DB is using 'iso_1' charset. Can anyone advise me how to solve the problem ? Any configuratioin should I do for the JDBC connection string and where to configure it ? Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
When you browse your Sybase connection do you see the corrupt characters in the table name, column name the data or both.
Is the corrupt character a ? or an upsidedown ?
You say that you are using 'iso_1' charset in Sybase. Is this not just for western european languages ? in which case I wouldnt expect it to manage chinese characters.
When you log your Sybase instance using Sybase Central, do you see the correct characters?
Just to note I can browse I chinese (GBK) Sybase database where the tablenames, columnnames and data are in chinese.
Also that we currently only support jtds-1.2.jar .

Reading the manual or help on how to create a TOC would be a first step, so you know how the program works....
But to cut to the chase, you should probably go into your book file and delete your existing TOC because whatever change you made has corrupted it. It's easier to start with a fresh file than try to figure out what brokie.
Next, Add a new TOC to the book file, and set it up to record the types of tags that you want to display. Save and update the book.
Is your second "finished" .jpg from a file that you can open, or can you open a properly formatted TOC file? If so, open it. If not, look in your Frame templates directory for a TOC that's similar to what you want to achieve. Open that.
In your real TOC, execute File > Import > Formats and specify the "model" TOC as your source. The only format you may want to not import are Variables. Get everything else.
After you import the model formats, save your real TOC. In the book file, Update. Your TOC should generate with the new formats in place. From there, it should be a relatively easy job to modify the formats, a step at a time, to get to the finished product.
