Cost effective approach to NAC

Net Pros,
We have about 20 remote branch offices. Office size varies from as small as 2 users per office to as large as 30 users per office. Each office has either a Cisco 1801 or 1841 router that we manage. These routers basically provide DHCP, NAT, and Firewall services for the client computers, and all traffic simply goes out to various ISPs that provide the network for these offices. All computers at these offices are connected to non Cisco and unmanaged switches, which are connected to our routers. We have no control over the end users' computers at these offices, and these users do not access any network resources at the Headquarter. We merely provide internet access for these offices.
I have been reading about NAC, such as in band vs. out of band, virtual gateway vs. real IP gateway, layer2 vs. layer3, but I am not sure how to go about it.
What do you think the most cost effective approach to implement NAC is in this environment?

Since you have a reduced number of users on each site the best for you is to use a centralized server for all your users (the smaller server is a network module for 50 users, appliances go from 100, 300, 500, etc.) For this you'll need to allow Layer 3 connections (this means the end-users will be one or more hops away from your server).
Both Virtual and Real IP gateway should work for you. Depends on what you can do on the current network: Virtual gateway will act as a bridge so there's no need to change the topology on your network, it will work as a simple cable; real-ip gateway will add a hop to the path (will have a different network on each interface), so your topology may be changed a little.
Since sites won't be having access to your network resources the best would be to use out-of-band mode so the users will only authenticate with the NAC appliance and then will run free to the internet; however, since your switches are non Cisco, the communication needed for the Out-of-band is not supported, you'll have to use In-band mode. And all the traffic will need to flow through your NAC appliance...
I hope this information is useful.

  • How to find most cost-effective fwdg agent at the time of shipment creation

    Dear Friends,
I have a requirement of realizing the best cost effective transporter(forwarding agent) in the shipment document. Then how to do using the Transportation functionality of the ERP?
There is a scenerio like I want to transport my goods from L to M. In system say i have a route XX for that, which gets automatically determined in the shipment document.
    Now on route XX, if i have 5 operative transportors, say A, B, C, D, E.
Transporter A - provides services km-wise, kg-wise, fixed price as well as truck wise
(Say if you opt for km-wise, charges are 15 rs/km, 10 rs/kg, fixed price of 15000 for full truck from A to B)
Transporter B - Similar to Transporter A with different charges
(Say if you opt for km-wise, charges are 18 rs/km, 7 rs/kg, fixed price of 14500 for full truck from A to B)
Similarly other tranporters also have their charges.
and Now at the time of shipment creation, how can i have some standard method, so that the system suggest the most cost effective transportor for my delivery ie. shipment i want to make or probabaly if there is some standard way to get the list of all available transporters on a given route at the time of shipement creation.
    Please suggest.
    Regards,
    Dipti.

    Hi Sandeepan,
    Thanx for ur reply.
As per my requirement, there might be say 100 routes existing into the system and each route might have say 10 different transportors available. Now they want to know 1) the list of transportors available on the given route - (run time at the time of shipment creation) to be put into the forwarding agent field 2) Of the available (say 10 transportors) who will be the best/cheapest.
As per your suggestion, the functionality helps after we put in the fwdg agent and then estimate his associated cost. But as in this case, since there are so many routes (associated so many transportors) they will not know whom to put in the field.
Hence want to know if there is some standard functionality of SAP which might help us i) identifying the list of transportors on a particular route or a given criteria - run-time ii) How to find the best among available OR i) SAP Directly suggesting the one and best transportor available on a given route.
    Please help.
    Regards,
    Dipti.

  • What is the most cost effective way to have a broken screen repaired?

What is the most cost effective way to have a broken screen repaired?

One thing to bear in mind, if your iPad is still under any sort of warranty, using any unauthorized repair place may void that.
So you may find less expensive places that are non-authorized, but once you use them, Apple disowns your device and if you have any warranty left, it'll be void.

  • Magic Mouse: Eneloop Really More Cost Effective than Lithium?

Hi. Under heavy use, gaming or doing professional work for 16 hours a day at most is it really more environment friendly and cost effective to put Lithium disposable batteries like Everyready's Ultimate?
Supposing you used a calculated cost of having the Sanyo charger + four Sanyo Eneloops + trickle charge (although rechargeables can be charged many times which could last you decades. I think 80+ years. Having four Eneloops is realistic because, you need two extra Eneloops in the ready) vs. the Ultimate, how much would their cost be?
By the way, how long does Eneloop last if you use it heavily? The Lithium Ultimate performs so much better than alkaline (it's only at 94% after a month. The Advanced Alkaline was only at 3 weeks before it had to be replaced at 10% or risk having a leak if it's not replaced),
    Gbu,
    Alvin

For me, yes. Buying new batteries every few weeks got old. The eneloops are great and last about as long as the copper-tops I was using (which lasted about a month). I think I calculated saving money about the 5th month. B&H Photo has them for about $20.

  • I am proposing to upgrade the 4GB RAM in my Mac Mini 2.5 GHz core i5, by replacing it with 2 x 8GB Crucial 'slots'. Will the performance be significantly better than if I upgrade with 2 x 4GB slots? Is it cost effective, is the question.

My Mac Mini (2.5GHz Core i5) came with 4GB RAM, and I now wish to upgrade the RAM to either 8GB or 16GB in total (Crucial). Clearly, there is a price difference separating the two, but would this be justified by the extent of the improvement in performance, if I went for the more expensive option of 16GB RAM?
Secondly, if I am allowed to pose two questions: what seems to be the most compliant, reliable and cost effective external hard drive for this or Mac Mini's more generally? I was thinking of purchasing a 3TB HD for storing my rather large collection of photographs and Logic Pro 9 musical endeavours.
Your experience and advice would be appreciated, my having only recently made the switch from a Windows system to Mac.

I 150% agree with dwb and woodmeister50 about WD hard drives. They are NOWHERE near the quality they should be. When you can get a Seagate for just a few dollars more, and they last years longer, NO ONE should buy a WD. I lost $25,000 worth of music and audiobooks on a six-week-old WD in 2007 and that was the last I'd ever buy from them. They REFUSED to warranty it with the ORIGINAL sales receipt from Bestbuy.
I have 16Gb of Crucial RAM in my Mini and here's what I've discovered.
You WON'T see "lightning fast" performance increases, becasue the Mini is pretty darned fast to begin with. What you WILL see is that when you're running RAM intensive apps like Photoshop or Parallels, other apps won't "bog down".
Quite frequently I find myself with less than half a gig of free RAM out of that 16. When it was only 8 I was at 100% nearly ALL THE TIME. When I only had the 4 it came with, it was always maxed out.

    Thank you for your help.
The client has already made the jump to 8Gb including HBA's, switch and RAID Storage.
The other question will be if they need a seperate Mac Server to run the Meta Data or are they able to use the current Mac they are running to do this?
The Mac is a 201073 model they say with 12 Dual Core 2.66Mhz processors and 16 GB of Memory. This system is currently doing rendering. It has the XSAN Client but I understand for the solution to work they need to also run XSAN Server on a MDC.

Mac or PC ? - I believe that Adobe switched the processing functions for 3D rendering in Photoshop CC to VRam.
To upgrade the Vram on my existing iMacs cost-effectively entails new upgraded iMacs.
So I am now needing to purchase new desktop computers for production purposes and seperately for an education institute - PC's or Macs?
Is this shift to Vram for image rendering affecting any processing functions of the other applications in the suite - the ones I use the most are Photoshop, Bridge, Lightroom, Illustrator, Premiere, After Effects, inDesign, & SoundBooth
I also use Strata 3D, Lightwave, Maya, Cinema 4D, Logic Pro, Final Cut Pro,
I will be using the suite in a Graphic design, Photography, Video editing / sound recording / editing (I am also a musician), animation and 3D context.

This forum is primarily for a few users like me to answer questions about installation, serial numbers and general issues regarding the Creative Suite. We don't have to expertise to answer questions like you're asking. Otherwise, few people visit this forum.
You'd do best to pick the forums of the applications you use the most, especially applications that test the limits of your computer (probably Premiere, After Effects, and Photoshop) and ask in those forums.

  • I am looking for a (relatively) cost effective virtual news studio that does not look too cartoonish

I am looking for a (relatively) cost effective virtual news studio that does not look too cartoonish. Can anyone recommend a website or software they have used?
    Any help much appreciated

I don't know how you would feel about the quality, because I have never actually used one, but there is usualy a free 7 day trial of Video Blocks and they have 100 virtual sets available. You can download as many as 20 per day with the trial. So you have enough time in a week to get them all. But don't forget to check out the music section for your news intro. And some lower thirds.
    https://www.videoblocks.com/freeclips/
I have to warn you that I got so wrapped up in the site that when they offered a huge discount I took them up on their offer. IIRC it was around $100 for one year instead of ten times that much.

  • Most cost effective yet creative plug ins available?

    Hello,
What are the most cost effective, creative/innovative and practical set of Final Cut and Motion plugin on the market? Core melt V2? Boris Continuum Complete? Genarts Sapphire? Other? Right now on Digital Juice, they are offering 50% off of Core Melt V2 at $199, but some say the video output quality with the plugins does not match up to some of the other plugins companies. What sort of advice could you offer about this topic?
    Thank you,
    Jordan

Buy all the most expensive plugins and software that you can get your hands on and your videos will be the best ever seen on YouTube. Invest as much time as you can in every application you purchase because you know what you want to produce and you know that the application that you've purchased can produce your desire and that is why you purchased it. Get the Apple Pro Training curriculum available at PeachPit Press.
Here's an example of using limited resources to produce desired results:
I worked in an office that only had an iMac and Final Cut Express where I edited stock videos using stock images. We're talking limited resources to the max. You would be surprised of the outstanding outcome of production using these limited resources. I needed an image editing app so I downloaded GIMP - saved the production department thousands of dollars in investing in similar applications. I so very much wish that I could of brought my nice, new, shiny MBP into the office to work on simply because I know what I want to produce and I know that I have the tools to accomplish those visions on my system. Unfortunately I am limited to the resources that were available at the office. Sometimes you just have to make the best with what you have. If you know what you want to create then it's easier to accomplish and selecting the right tool for the job is easier in this regard as well. How can you know what you want if you don't really know what you want? If all you know is that you want something less-amateur then all you will receive is a less-amateur response...

  • Cost effective quicktime hosting service?

I'm looking for a recommendation on a streaming Quicktime H.264 Video server host. I've done a google search and there are hundreds... just checking if anyone is using a hosting service they like.
    Cost effective would be nice.

    Hey Guys,
This is Naimi from Charlotte, NC. I had some website design and web development projects which I wanted to outsourcing due to obvious reasons of low cost and effective results. I was looking for a reliable outsourcing company who have proven track record and can deliver the results on time. I came across this Offshore Software Outsourcing Company called Tatvasoft through Google. I just sent them an enquiry and within two days they were back with reply on how to go about it. Their plan seemed promising and they were very flexible. I thought of giving them a shot, and it worked out. I started out with the small project and ended up giving all my projects to them.
    Thanks to Tatvasoft.

  • Best Cost effective way of fixing shattered iPhone

    Hi all
My Mom recently dropped her phone (a short distance at that) and had the front of her iphone4 crack into a few good splits. The phone itself is still completely functionally sound, it just has a shattered glass front. I believe when we went to the apple store they said they could get her a replacement for $150 (or maybe that was AppleCare+?) but that there was another option to send it to iResQ for $90. Can any of you tell me the most cost effective method of getting this screen fixed?
    Thank you!

If you do the out-of-warranty replacement you will have a warranty on the service replacement phone (90 days or what was left of the warranty on her phone, whichever is longer). 3rd party repair will be cheaper but there will be no warranty.

  • Cost effective video signal analysis

Is it possible to get LabView to perform analysis on a video signal (NTSC) and if so, what devices (DAQ cards, video capture cards, etc.) do I need to look at. We are looking at options to improve our video quality testing at our factory and are looking for a cost effective soultion. There are video signal analyzers out there, but I would like a PC based soultion since the factory is beginning to use LabView for other testing. Any advice would be helpful.
    Troy

Troy. National Instruments has an entire line of machine vision and image processing hardware and software. If you're processing an NTSC signal, I recommend an NI-1411 color frame grabber. From there, you can use the NI-Vision software for LabVIEW to analyze your NTSC signal. Along with NI-Vision for LabVIEW, I recommend using a product called Vision Builder, which is a prototyping environment that lets you play with most of the Vision fuctions before even openning LabVIEW. Then once you're done prototyping, Vision Builder will create your LabVIEW VI for you!
Please respond if you have any further questions.

  • Is it feasible/cost effective to upgrade my G5, 2 GHz Dual PowerPC processors,  2 GB DDR SDRAM to an Intel system? There are no updates for PowerPC systems any longer.

Is it feasible/cost effective to upgrade my current MAC G5, dual 2GHz powerPC, 2GB DDR SDRAM, running OS 10.4.1.1 to an Intel board & processor(s)?  Power PC G5 no longer has updates available.  Things such as the newest version of Flash require an intel system.
Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated.
    ssbrown

Well you can upgrade your 10.4.11 G5 to 10.5.8.  But you lose Classic, and don't gain any Boot Camp capability.    Only Intel Macs have Boot Camp, and still no Classic.  You also have be mindful, if you buy too new, you won't have Rosetta capability which allows PowerPC applications to run on Intel Macs that were designed for Mac OS X.   Macs that ship with 10.7 or newer have no PowerPC support for applications or drivers.  See this user tip:  https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2295

  • Is it more cost effective to host SAP software at my university?

Hi! I'm connected to a major university that has a high quality hosting area of it's own. Is it more cost effective for them to host SAP software themselves or should they use the services of the UCC? If the value is close then they may want more control in their own environment. Or if there's greater value with the UCC's then they can use their budget and resources in a different way!
Thanks for any insights on the best-in-practice way to proceed!
    Best regards,
    Richard

    Richard
The answer to your question is that it is more cost effective to use an existing UCC hosting center as opposed to developing your own system.  For example, in the Americas the cost of belonging to the University Alliance is the same whether you use the hosting center or not.  Unless your current center can do all of the following for free:  Purchase required hardware, train your staff, install and support the SAP software. and provide help desk support to your faculty. then it will cost you more to do your own hosting.  The other advantage of using a UCC hosting center is that they can provide you the complete set of SAP products and they can create clients for use with the existing UA curriculum.
