Could Intel version of OSX run on non-Apple Intel boxes -- now or ever?

In the press the last few days I've been seeing a lot of speculation about a third-party version of Windows that could be created to run on the new Intel Macs. But why would anyone want to do that -- put an inferior operating system on a more expensive machine? I'm interested in the reverse: the possibility of putting the superior operating system (OSX) into cheaper hardware. So:
It is even technically possible, now or sometime in the future, for the Intel version of OSX to be tweaked so that it could run on a generic wintel-box machine? Sorry if this question has already been addressed -- I couldn't find any posts about it yet. I read that there is a technical barrier relating to the BIOS, but perhaps that could be overcome? Say, for example, Apple starts selling OSX for Intel Macs as a standalone product (for $99 or whatever) sometime in the next couple years. Is it feasible that eventually a version of that could be used to boot up a Dell or or IBM machine also with Intel inside? And if so, could this lead to Apple going head-to-head against Microsoft in making competing OSes for any and all Intel-based boxes? Maybe not this year or next year, but 3 - 5 years from now?
I'm no expert in all of this, so apologies ahead of time if my question is ridiculous in some way or other.

I doubt Apple will change its business model. Apple is a hardware company that produces software mainly for its own hardware.

Yes. The second one can be installed on an internal or external drive, but can't be one that the computer wouldn't be able to run if installed on the internal drive.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
There will be no audio output in safe mode. The question to be answered by the test is whether any devices are listed in the Sound preference pane. After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Can I have two versions of OSX running on same machine?

Hi - since upgrading from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion recently I have run into an unexpected problem (though I'm sure there would have been a warning that I missed). Some of my older applications, such as Adobe Creative Suite version 1, no longer run with the new OS. My plan is to install an additional hard drive in my Mac Pro (2009 dual Xeon version) and go back to my original software (Tiger) and install that on the new drive, then update to Snow Leopard with that software package. I will then, hopefully, be able to install CS1 on that drive.
Am I likely to encounter any problems doing this? I will effectively have two different OSXs running on the same machine, albeit on differnt drives.
    Thank you in anticipation,
    John Irvine

The old "pop the DVD in, hold down Option or Command + C and just do a clean install on your new drive doesn't cut it?
As for SL, it has to be retail, can't be the OEM gray disc from another Mac specific model.
First, start up your computer from the Mac OS X Install DVD.
Insert the Mac OS X Install DVD.  After it mounts, choose System Preferences from the Apple () menu.
Choose Startup Disk from the View menu.
Select the Mac OS X Install DVD as the startup disk and click Restart.

  • TC as WDS remote to non-Apple (Belkin modem-router) main?

I have a Belkin ADSL modem with built-in G wireless currently serving an MBP/10.5.3. I've just purchased a 512GB Time Capsule and have managed to set it up for wireless backup with some swearing.
I would now like to use the TC as a WDS remote to the Belkin main as I've a second wired Mac I'd like to connect to the TC for internet access, but so far have been unable to get this arrangement to work.
I've enabled Wireless Bridge/WDS in the Belkin and added TC's MAC address to its list of permitted clients. I've then added the Belkin's connection details to TC's AirPort>WDS>Wireless pane and entered the Belkin's MAC address into TC's AirPort>WDS>WDS Main field. Checked the settings and it all looks like it should work, but when the TC restarts it complains that it can't find the WDS or internet connection.
Apple docs are unclear on whether or not a TC is capable of connecting to a non-Apple network in WDS mode. (Though if not, why not?) Has anyone managed a similar arrangement, and if so, how? Alternatively, does anyone know if such an arrangement definitely won't work, in which case I won't waste any more time on it?
    Thanks

I'd been having a similar problem. I was trying to extend a network using my time capsule; the original network is run off a 'BT HomeHub' router provided by the UK ISP British Telecom (I'm not sure what the actual model is, I think some kind of Thompson Speedtouch). I knew the BT router was capable of supporting WDS and dchao99 was absolutely correct (thanks for the really useful post) in that when I turned all encryption off the devices could talk. From what I've seen, this is the case for most non-apple routers that support WDS.
After looking around on other message boards, the encryption problem seems to be whether the routers allow you input passwords using ascii or hex. The TC will only let you put in a WEP password using 128-bit ascii (thirteen characters). Unfortunately it doesn't tell you that explicitly. The problem I'd been having when setting up WDS was that my non-apple router was asking for the password in hex; a 128-bit WEP password is 13 ascii characters but 26 characters hen translated into hex. So what I'd been doing was deciding on a 13 character pass key for the TC, and putting the same pass key into my non-apple router; the reason the routers couldn't talk is because the two passwords were different when the latter is read as a hex. Once I'd twigged this I just translated the 13 character ascii key into a 26-character hex string using a translator on the net, stuck that in my non-apple router, and now WDS works like a dream.
The WEP coding problem seems to be a really common reason why people can't get WDS to work with TC, and so if you're having trouble I'd suggest the following:
    1) turn all protection off on all your routers and try WDS to see if they are in fact compatible.
    2) if they work without protection, set your TC to WEP protection and make up a 13 character ascii password
    3) translate this ascii string into a 26 character hex string using a translator and write it down (you can find one at http://centricle.com/tools/ascii-hex ; just remove the '%' symbols from the translated string)
    3) in your non-apple router make sure you select 128-bit WEP encryption, figure out whether it wants a 13 letter ascii code or a 26 letter hex code, and use the appropriate one. If you can't tell which it wants you'll have to try both.

  • My iPod touch will not play or charge on my non apple dock since the software was updated, why is this?

My iPod touch used to play and charge in my non apple dock but now will do neither. Looking back it appears to have stopped working when the software was updated to 5.1. Why is this?

There are two sides to this.  On the one hand, an Apple upgrade bricked your dock and that bites. On the other hand, Apple can't be expected to design around 3rd party devices that don't follow the specifications. We don't know why Apple made this particular change that bricked your dock so it is difficult to judge whether or not there was a good reason behind it.  We also do not know why AIVN didn't follow the specification but it was probably cost related.
Note: If you sell the iPod, you'll still have a non-functioning dock.  You can sell it to someone with an older iPhone or iPod that can't be updated to iOS 5.1.

  • Most recent Photoshop Elements version that will run well on G4 PowerMac (non-Intel) and Tiger?

    Good afternoon.
I am wondering if it is wise to try to get a "OK" version that will run on a G4 MDD, or just take the plunge and go to an Intel machine.
I don't that the sound of that thought.....but it may be the new reality.
    Thanks for your time.

    Hi Bruce,
Latest I can find is  v6...
    Apple/Macintosh requirements for Elements 6:
    PowerPC® G4 or G5 or multicore Intel® processor
    Mac OS X v10.4.8 through 10.5.2
    512MB of RAM (1GB recommended)
    64MB of video RAM
1GB of available hard-disk space (additional free space required during installation)
    1,024x768 display resolution
    DVD-ROM drive
QuickTime 7 software required for multimedia features

    Apperently v7 is Windows only...

Depends how much work you do with it it, but a Mac Mini even will run circles around the fastest G4.

  • How can I downgrade back to Firefox 3.6 because 4.0 won't run on my version of OSX?

I downloaded Firefox 4.0 & installed it on my MacBook running OSX.4.11 but when I tried to run it I got an error saying it was not compatible with my version of OSX.
So if I can't open Firefox I lose all my bookmarks....
How can I downgrade to the version I was running before I upgraded & replaced all the files with version 4? I think this was 3.6 as I do upgrade regularly.
    Thanks!

You can get the latest version of Firefox 3.6 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
When you re-install Firefox 3.6 it will use your existing bookmarks, passwords and other user data.
Mozilla are working to prevent Mac users with non-compatible systems from getting the notification about Firefox 4, and also not displaying the "Download Firefox 4" button on http://www.mozilla.com

  • Running 2 versions of OSX at once

I have my hard drive partitioned and am running Snow Leopard on one (so I can use some older power pc applications) and lion on the other.  Is it possible to virtually run both at the same time?  I downlaoded Parallels Desktop 7, but I don't see how to run another version of OSX with that.  It only wants to run Windows.  Will Fusion work for this, or perhaps another program?  Or am I stuck running one at a time with Boot Camp?

VMware Fusion v4 will run Lion on a Snow Leopard system (I'm doing this on my Snow Leopard iMac), but not the other way around (as the Snow Leopard license does not allow this, and all the virtual machine vendors honor the license).  I suspect the latest version of Parallels and VirtualBox might be able to do the same thing.
Your Mac needs to have more than 2GB of RAM, as Lion will want VMware Fusion to create a virtual machine with at least 2GB (which gets locked down, so it is not available for other apps).

  • Possible to run different versions of OSX on same internal HD in iMac?

    Hi All,
I am a Pro Tools user, and Pro Tools is usually many weeks/months behind in supporting the latest builds of OSX. So while the rest of my computing needs would benefit from immediate upgrade when the newest OSX build is out (i.e. better network performance, security enhancements, etc.) I'm often warned by Digidesign not to upgrade until they've certified Pro Tools works with the newest build.
So I want to buy an iMac with a large hard drive, and I'm wondering if this is possible: can I partition that hard drive and run 2 versions of OSX on it? Initially they'll be the same build (10.5.5 or .6 whichever it comes with) but on one partition will be all of my programs minus Pro Tools, the other one will only have Pro Tools. I'll upgrade one partition regularly to the newest version, but keep the other partition to the last approved OSX build by Digidesign.
Is such a thing possible? How would I choose to boot from the other partition, by holding ALT at startup just like I do when I want to boot from an external firewire HD? Would I have to buy a second license of OSX?
    Thanks!

A new mac, that came with leopard won't be able to boot to 10.4.11. You will be able to view the files on the external, but many programs when opened, e.g. address book, will say that they are not supported on this architecture.

    (including Classic OS 9)
If this is a separate partition that has an install of OS 9, you will not be able to boot from it. Again, you will be able to view files and even fewer (if any) files will be supported. If you have used an app like monoligual to remove old architecture support then you definitely won't be able to run the apps.
I have little experience with OS 9.
If OS 9 is not on a separate partition then I am not quite sure what you mean.
