Could Snow Leopard upgrade changed Time Machine operation

I bought a new 24" 2,93 mhz Imac which came with leopard installed. I have 3 external hard drives daisy chained with my scanner. I only turn on the two smaller hard drives to enable operation of the scanner. Most of the time I only have my 750 gig My Book drive which I set up for Time Machine to back up my computers HD. Under leopard all worked fine but having only recently upgraded to snow leopard I had an occasion to use the scanner and turned on all hard drives. Time Machine began to work so hard I could not scan and could not shut down so I had to push the off button. I now cannot get the Imac to boot now unless I turn on the other two hard drives also. Not sure how to proceed?.
Maybe as the other hard drive appeared on my desktop time machine was backing them up. I had excluded the desktop when I initially set it up.

You need to run a +*Repair Disk+* (not permissions), via Disk Utility, in your Applications/Utilities folder, on any disk that was attached when you did the force power off.

Excluding the desktop doesn't do it. You have to exclude the drives via TM Preferences > Options. Note that you can only do that while they're attached, and when you eject them, their names will disappear from the exclusion list (but should come back automatically when they're re-connected).
That said, there are a number of posts here and in the Leopard TM forum, where various WD drives, including the MyBook, don't work well with TM. Check with WD for firmware or driver updates.
Exclude as many of those drives from any anti-virus scanning as you can.
Also exclude them, at least temporarily, from Spotlight Indexing, via System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy.
If none of that helps, post back and we'll explore deeper.

Connect the two via Firewire cable - Transferring files between two computers using FireWire. Boot the old iMac into Target Disk Mode. Boot the new iMac normally.
If you are starting the new iMac for the first time then do the above before you turn on the new iMac. After you turn on the new iMac you will begin in the Setup Assistant. When you complete the registration screens you will be offered an opportunity to migrate your data from another Mac. Follow the instructions to migrate your old Home folder, third-party applications and support files, and system preferences to the new iMac.
If you have already gone through the Setup Assistant and created an initial admin user account, then you do the connection step but will use Migration Assistant in the Utilities folder of the new iMac.

You should be able to restore iTunes and iPhoto files if the Lion system was running the same version of those applications that you'll have on the Snow Leopard system. However, you won't be able to restore files for applications like Mail, Address Book, or Safari, as the versions of those won't match.

Issue installing Snow Leopard thru the Time Machine backup.

Might be a beginners Q, but I will ask because it's not being solved somehow.
I've tried installing the 10.6 Snow Leopard a few times but am confused. First time I installed without restoring the whole Mac HD from a backup few days ago (which I want to do because it is having trouble with my current Mac HD settings. I did this for the 2nd attempt)
When I did this, though I probably had every file there, I had major problems with my permissions(some files don't let me access says I have no permission) Also it was like the whole setting I had in 10.5.8 was gone.... What I thought is if I did a upgrade, everything will stay the same and all that will happen is it will become 10.6 snow leopard.
So next I restarted with inserting SL disk, and restarted the computer to install the SL and also restore my system from few days ago from time machine backup. This started and it did the restoration, and when everything is done, it is back to my 10.5.8 setting I want....but no 10.6 upgrade done(ie still 10.5.8) I am so confused. I did all this with my snow leopard disk but no upgrade happened!!
Am I missing some step? If someone can point out something that will be great.

It was 10.5.8
And the rest it was confusing and before I read your post I have gone to the apple store late afternoon today.
I explained the above and I was suspecting the permissions deal was causing the problem. What the mac guy did was went to some option to repair my user account permissions and everything worked out!!
When the guy did this I had the 10.6 system with lotta files having permission problems and also lotta small settings gone. But when repairing the user account permissions, all the settings came back and the os was 10.6!
Bottom line I think I screwed up account settings bad, and that was causing the problem.

Downgrade from Mavericks to Snow Leopard without using Time Machine

Hello.
I upgraded from Snow Leopard (OSX 10.6.8) and upgraded to Mavericks but the Time Machine was not turned on. Is there anyway to downgrade back to Snow Leopard?
I contacted Apple Support and was told that it is not advisable to format the drive and do a clean install using Snow Leopard installation Cd's since Mavericks made changes to the hardware on the iMac. They advise using time Machine to downgrade, but this option is not available to me. Is this true?? Or can I re-install Snow Leopard with no issues?

Snow Leopard forgets my Time Machine backups

I have just installed Snow Leopard on 4 machines and on each of them unless I keep selecting the time capsule backup folder from the preferences page it is only showing time machine backups from when Snow Leopard was installed. e.g. today.
Any ideas?

This has been reported by a few people.
What some people found was if they opened TM and closed it then opened it a second time it sees the old backups. You could give this a try. Also try repairing permissions on the open sparsebundle. Make sure you make a copy first incase of problems.

Restore to Snow Leopard from Lion Time Machine

I want to downgrade from OS X Lion to Snow Leopard (due to numerou reasons being discussed all around). Problem is, after upgrading to Lion, I erased my Snow Leopard Time Machine backup, and created a new one while running Lion (I edited a lot of files and stuff). My question is once I downgrade to SL, using the method of erasing the HDD completely and doing a fresh install, can I restore my backup from the Time Machine created in Lion? If no, then how can I access my files and folders in Snow Leopard then.

Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard. I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by this. If your 20 users had 500GB hard drives, then your total HD capacity would be 10,000GB, or 10TB. Double would be 20TB, which is more than I recommended. The 15TB (1.5 x the amount of data you would theoretically be backing up) would be plenty.
That said, the DroboPro has a maximum of 16TB using currently available 2TB drives, so I would feel confident in recommending that to you. Realistically, your users probably aren't all going to fill their hard drives to capacity, so you might find you need even less.
If I were you, I would look at how much data is on each hard drive right now, add it all up, multiply it by 1.5, then throw in an extra TB for good measure. I would only purchase enough drives to handle that capacity. As your users take up more space, you can order more drives and add them to the DroboPro.
For example, if each user was using an average of 200GB currently, then for 20 machines you would have a total of 4,000GB, or 4TB. I would put 3x2TB drives in the DroboPro, giving you a total of 6TB (minus overhead) of backup capacity. From there, you can add more 2TB drives as you need them. This is almost identical to a system I manage for a client and it works very well.

Clean installed Snow Leopard, but Lion Time Machine backup was not recognized.

I erased the Macintosh HD and clean installed the Snow Leopard. But when I try to use the Time machine backup to recovery my documents, the external hard disk can not even be recognized. It says "To use this disk, connect it to a Mac with Mac OS X v10.7 or later. The format of the disk was created using Lion which can not be read by Snow Leopard." The fact is that the format of the disk is Mac OS Extended (journaled) and was indeed created by Lion from windows format. So how can I read the disk using Snow Leopard? Thanks.

I it a general problem, affecting e.g. a Mac with multiple partitions. I get the same with trying to mount 10.7 from 10.6.8.
Not ideal. Hope a fix will be found. I'd suggest to report this to Apple.

I have Lion but I absolutely loathe everything about it and want Snow Leopard back; I have my SL install disk but everything I've read says I'll need a Time Machine backup which I don't have. If I try to downgrade, will I lose all my programs and things? Is there a way around that at all?

Unfortunately, Time Machine will not backup a NAS (e.g. AirDisk). AirDisk can be used as a TM backup drive as you have already discovered. The only way to backup the iTunes library on your HDD is to connected directly to your Mac. TM will be able to back up to your 1TB HDD connected to your Extreme. If you are dead set with keeping your iTunes connected to your Extreme, I believe CarbonCopyCloner (donateware) or SuperDuper! (purchase) may support backup of a NAS to a NAS.

What's the best approach to migrate to Snow Leopard using the time machine?

I have a time capsule, and have noticed the restore from backup option once I had to replace the HD on my MacBook Pro.
I am about to buy a new MacBook Pro which will probably ship with Snow Leopard, and am wandering, if when I setup the new OS I can restore from a backup of my old system?

don't use the full system restore from backup option with a new computer. that can only be used on the same exact computer. also, that option erases the destination drive and replaces it with the copy of the backed up system. this is not what you want.
when you first turn on the new computer you'll get a setup assistant which will give you an option to Migrate your user data and applications from a TM backup. you can also do it later using Migration Assistant located in Applications/Utilities.

How to restore Snow Leopard Mail with Time Machine?

That's exactly what I am saying. You do it just as I described in my first message.
I am assuming you have Time Machine in your Dock or in the Menu Bar (or both). With Mail as the active application -- It says "Mail" in the Menu Bar next to the Apple menu -- and a Mail message list visible as the front window, click Time Machine. You should get message lists going back in time. Step back in time until you find whatever it was you want to recover.

Missing Spaces and Time Machine dock icons (Tiger to Snow Leopard upgrade)

I noticed on my MacBook (Leopard to Snow Leopard upgrade) that it has icons for Spaces and Time Machine in the dock to the left of the divider. These are missing from the dock on my iMac that I upgraded from Tiger to Snow Leopard. They are both System Preferences with no option for adding to the dock in the Preferences and the Preference icon in "Show All" in System Preferences is not selectable. I located them in System/Library/PreferencesPane but dragging the preference pane file to the dock doesn't work. I did a Show Package Content but did not see anything in the folder that could be dragged like an application. I can put it on the right with the stacks but is there a way to add a Preference to the dock on the application side?

Time Machine is in your Applications folder and Spaces is in your Applications/Utilities folder. You can drag them to the dock from there.

It is retail disk, i bought it in apple store. I also resetter PRRAM and SMC and checked disk. I also tried clean installation and upgrade, nothing works, after run installation program after few seconds wrote: OS X Snow Leopard cannot be install on this machine :-(
