How do i convert a .rar file to a .ear file.
and can anyone please enlist the details of the rar and ear file and their contents.

How to access a jar file in EAR file?

I have a EAR file which contains EJB.jar file and util.jar file. Outside of EAR, I mean in client side, I need to reference util.jar file. How can I access it?
EAR structure is

Util.jar must be executed in server side. If I just add Util.jar in client program's classpath, when client program is executed, serverside Util.jar is executed? Or what else I should do in the client program to reference server-side Util.jar?

Excellent question. I don't see any client-jar in your EAR file structure. So I am assuming you are writing a separate client application which will talk to the ejbs deployed as part of this EAR. You need to do the following:
Write another EAR file with the following structure:
ear:
META-INF/application.xml
util.jar
client.jar
client.jar should have a META-INF/MANIFEST.MF and that should contain Class-Path:util.jar and value for Main-Class attribute.
Now deploy this new ear to your application server and execute it using Application Client Container that comes with your app server.
If you don't want to write another EAR file, then bundle th client.jar in your original EAR file.
Points to note are:
you have to repackage util.jar again inside this ear file.
For portability reason, you should use Class-Path manifest entry in client.jar. Refer to http://java.sun.com/j2ee/verified/packaging.html and J2EE platform spec section #8.2.

Are JDev autogenerated paths needed to create ear, war and jar files ?

Hi
We want to create ear, war and jar files from Ant build script generated from JDeveloper 11.1.1.7.
We also like to use ojdeploy with it.
In the process of creating build.xml files from projects, we see these paths.
We also have standalone Weblogic installed with ADF runtime 11.1.1.7
Questions:
1- Do we need these path ids to generate ear, jar, war files properly and then deploy the ear to our standalone Weblogic so that our webapp can run ok ?
2- Why are they generated, if they are not needed
From research, it appears that we don't need these paths except to keep ant targets of init, compile, exec etc with ojdeploy.
3- Is that true ?
We are afraid that because no paths are listed in the build.xml, then when we deploy the ear app, it cant use the ADF runtime on the standalone WLS.

There are two different things here. Using ant to build the class files and then building an ear from the class files and other resources.
The building part needs the libraries if you use javac as compiler. Building an ear file only needs the path to the jar files which are packed into the ear.
In this sense you need the pages you see in the build.xml.
Then Jdev offers another way: ojdeploy. This tool is a Jdev without a gui.
You can use this tool and build the classes for each project of a workspace and to build build war and ear file. This is just like you click the rebuild button for each project and then the deploy the projects and application. If you use this approach you don't need the generated path ids as the whole build process is done inside Jdev as it's done on your developer pc.

You are using the internal deployment file?
<yourapp>.deploy?
1) Place the file in the WEB-INF/lib directory
2) Right click <yourapp>.deploy file and select properties
3) File Groups -> WEB-INF/Lib -> Contributers and select your jar file.
4) Rebuild the ear, done

PS Be carefull, depending on the Application server you are using the quartz library COULD already be present (Most have it) and this could be a different version!
If this is the case you need to tell the application server to load classes from the web-inf directory first!
With the Oracle OC4J containers this can be done during deployment, classloaders and select search local classes first.
With Weblogic you will need the deployment descriptor 'weblogic.xml' and add:

<prefer-web-inf-classes>true</prefer-web-inf-classes>

Problem:
I have one ear file(abc.ear) to deploy which contains one jar file(xyz.jar) and one war file(pqr.war).
In config.xml file of WL 6.1, it was mentioned as :
<Application Deployed="true" Name="abc" Path="./config/mydomain/applications/abc.ear">
<EJBComponent Name="xyz" Targets="myserver" URI="xyz.jar"/>
<WebAppComponent Name="pqr" Targets="myserver" URI="pqr.war"/>

But in config.xml file WL10,I cannot mention the same.

I am a total newbie in J2EE technology.
I am currently using Sun One Application. Using the sample application, it produces all the Jar, War and Ear files.
My understanding is Jar is produced to be a library-like usage.
War is for web application.
And Ear is for what?? oops EJB? Can someone tell me?
Anyway, my concern is, if I am to produce Ear, war, or Jar file after deploy, I have problems doing the testing. Let's say I want to modify the Jsp file, then I have to use ant to compile all, undeploy the instance and deploy again.
Any better way?

your jar files contain your EJBs, your WAR file contains your web application (JSPs, servlets and support) and these are all bundled into your EAR file. All of these files are just zip-formatted archives, you can look at them all via the jar tool (or something like WinZip, if you are so inclined). Each of these will contain a descriptor file (in XML format) - check out the J2EE spec on it.

Question about ear file and jar file

I have an ear file that I built using ant. Say my project name is test. So my ear file name is test.ear. Everytime I try to deploy the ear file, weblogic complains about not finding the test-ejb.jar. I'm confused as to why weblogic expects a test-ejb.jar in the ear because I didn't intend to put one in. My question is whats inside the ear file that weblogic thinks it needs the test-ejb.jar? I went through the file, but couldn't find anything that should tell weblogic that it should find a test-ejb.jar. In addition, I don't have either weblogic-ejb-jar.xml or ejb-jar.xml in the ear file. Any help would be appreciated.

An EAR should have an "application.xml" in the META-INF directory within the JAR. You might take a look at it. I suspect there is an EJB module specified by that name.

Changing values in property file inside a jar in an ear

I have an application that contains EJB. The environment values needed for initial context of the ejb is kept in a .properties file. I have created an ear of the application. Inside the ear there is a jar which contains the .properties file. I need to deploy the ear to different environments. However before deploying I need some kind of script to change the values in the .properties file inside the jar in the ear.
Can anyone provide some help/pointers about how can I achieve it (Using ANT/WLST)

WLST does not have any capability to update a JAR.
WLS 10.3 (still in tech preview) has the ability to override properties
files inside the jar with an external properties file. This would allow you
to deploy the same ear to different environments, and then only deploy a
different properties file in the plan directory.

First, you need to be able to boot from the Recovery HD:
Boot Using Command+R keys:
1. Restart the computer.
2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
"COMMAND" and the "R" keys together.
3. Release the keys when the Utilities Menu appears.
Once at the Utilities Menu select Terminal from the Utilities menu in the screen's menubar. Now, you need to know where these new files are located. You move to any location using the 'cd' command such as cd /Users/user_name/Documents, then press RETURN. Replace user_name with your actual username. Next you need to do a directory listing to see if your files are in that location, Documents. Use ls -al to do a directory listing of the files and folders in Documents. If you find your new files there, then connect an external drive or flash drive. You will need to know the name you have assigned to this drive. It needs to be already formatted. Copy your files using cp /Documents/filename /Volumes/volname/filename. Replace volname and filename with those that apply. Press RETURN.
Or take it to your local Apple Store and see if they can do the chore for you.

Common JAR file between EJB and WAR inside an EAR

I'm trying to deploy an EAR application outside the development environment and I have the following problem.
My EAR has the following structure :
application.ear
|-- ejbs.jar
|-- web.war
Inside the WAR, in /WEB-INF/lib/, I have a set of JAR files that are used by the Web app and also, of course, by the EJB.
During the deployment step, EJB module cannot be deployed because it miss some classes into the classpath.
I think it is a common problem in J2EE development, so does someone has a solution for this problem ?
Please note I'm using Macromedia JRun 4 SP1 on Windows XP.

I have found a solution that seems elegant to me. I'm going to try and explain...
My appli.jar EJB module and my appli.war Web module are using both two JAR, let's say common.jar and util.jar.
The way to share those JAR between the two modules is to have the following structure for the EAR :
appli.ear
|-- appli.jar
|-- appli.war
|-- common.jar
|-- util.jar
|-- META-INF
|-- application.xml
|-- manifest.mfIn this structure :
* the common.jar and the util.jar are not part of the WAR (/web-inf/lib)
* the manifest.mf file has the following content :
Manifest-Version: 1.0
Created-By: My Application
Class-Path: common.jar util.jarPlease note that space is used as separator for the classpath entry to allow independancy from OS.
And you know what ? It works ! Well, on Macromedia JRun 4.0 SP1 and on Windows XP but I hope it works on other platforms.
I hope it will help a lot of people because I spent a lot of time before to find a solution !

Sorry if someone asked this before.
I have a package (.jar) which would like to be shared by both ejb and war
component, I put them in the ear/lib/, and add an entry in the manifest
file. Somehow I couldn't access those package after deployed in iPlanet, nor
seeing them being extracted to any directories. Do I have to put 2 copies in
each of them in iPlanet ? Or there's any other way to work around this ?

I haven't tried out this, please try to include this .jar file in one
of the path where the path in application server points to. This might
help. You can find the application server's classpath in
Software/iPlanet->Application Server->6.0->Java->Classpath.

Extracted ear/war/jar file location in JBoss

How can I find out in runtime where JBoss extracted my ear/war/jar file?
I have a file inside my ear/war/jar file and I need to know the location of the file. I know that it is in the tmp/deploy directory but I need the exact application temporary name.

You can take out the common classes and bundle them in a jar library that can be bundled directly in APP-INF/lib (or library directory defined by <library-directory> in applicaton.xml if you are using JEE5 / WLS 10). Is it possible to do this re-arragement?

Where to put Third Party Jar files in an .ear file so that they can be packaged along with the entire application and thus bypass the trouble of putting the third party .jars inside the application server lib directory and set the class path.

Just put them in the root of your EAR. You can specify them in the classpath of your EJB JAR's manifest.

Unable to open .jar -files on VisipriseMfg.ear

Any ideas what setting will be wrong because when I hit for example nc.ejb.jar in VisipriseMfg.ear, an error pop-up (Java Virtual Machine Launcher) exists: 'Failed to load Main-Class manifest attribute from....'
Same problem in all .jar -files. All .war -files in VisipriseMfg.ear opened without problems.

Any Jar file by default is associated in Windows as a Executable Jar File.When you click it the JVM tries to launch it as an standalone application But those files are not standalone applications and they don't contain Main-Class attribute in the manifest.mf file.
If you want to open jar files with a single click you will need to associate Jar files with winrar or open them directly.
It is not recommended to modify any file or their values.

Unable to resolve setting of dependent jar file in ear

I have an .ear file which as an ejb.jar and dependent.jar file. Now i set the classpath in MANIFEST.MF of ejb.jar and tried to deploy in weblogic server7.0 but my ejb is not able to identity my dependent.jar its throwing class not found error. I even tried setting up classpath even @ my MANIFEST.MF of ear also. still not able to resolve.
So let me know does dependent.jar in ear is suppoted are not?
