Cpu burn-in question...
Hi all, I decided to try out cpu burn-in to see how high my load temps get opposed to using seti@home. What are your opinions on disabling error checking? also, I notice in speedfan that it only loads one of my logical processors. Is it doing it's job to it's potential?
It looks like your burn in program is not multitasking, so it really isn't a full workout.

I have just finished assembling a new computer. In fact, it is the first one which I put together. I am looking for recommendations on a cpu burn-in program. There doesn't appear to be one in AUR or the standard repositories.

Hmmm if that's the case
#!/bin/bash
while true; do
dmesg > /dev/null
done
that should loop sufficiently fast enough, and do enough operations to shoot CPU usage to 90-100%
Just do "sleep 600 && killall oddscript" so it runs for 10 minutes....

Sorry, another CPU fan speed question.
Hi,
Just got a new 2011 iMac 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 21 inch. First mac and loving it so far! I can hear the fans just slightly at idle in a quiet room and checked on this forum to see what is the normal idle fan speed.
Most of the results come back with the CPU fan running at around 938 rpm. mine is constant at 1199 rpm. A few others have this speed too, but he majority are around the 938 rpm level (some much higher). My temps also seem lower than most at idle too (due to the higher fan speed i guess).
OP Drive 998
HD Drive 1099
CPU 1199
My question/s:
Why the difference between machine (shouldn't they be set the same in all machines with the same spec with software)?
And is the normal??
ThxAlso, would I notice it being quieter with it at 938 compared to 1199?

I have a HP laptop with a athlon-xp 1800+ in it. My question is. I also have a spare athlon-xp 2400+ cpu lying around. Could I swap that out in my laptop or would that not work?
There is a chance that the module can be swapped. That's how laptops work, but not sure whether legacy ones are the same..the CPU & Graphics chipsets are soldered onto the module, some sorta mobo atop the mobo. So to change either u change the module, big burn in ur pocket But modern laptops may be easier, i haven't opened up mine except to change ram & hdd.
edit: no u can't make a desktop cpu work on a laptop if that's what u wanna know

External DL DVD Burner Assignment Question
Hi, I have an external LaCie Dual Layer DVD burner and an internal (Sony) SuperDrive that is NOT a DL drive. Using the LaCie patch I can use the LaCie DL burner with iDVD, but I can't control which drive iDVD will choose on any given project. One time when I go to burn the project iDVD chooses the DL drive and sometimes it chooses the internal drive.
My question is, how can I assign iDVD to use a particular drive, and then if I can assign it to use the DL external drive, then will it let me burn a project that is over 2 hours? I question this because it still sees a single layer SuperDrive in the G5.
Can anyone provide me with some guidance please? Yes, I've already tried PatchBurn with no luck.
Thanks in advance. --JimHi Jim,
My question is, how can I assign iDVD to use a particular drive, and then if I can assign it to use the DL external drive, then will it let me burn a project that is over 2 hours? I question this because it still sees a single layer SuperDrive in the G5.iDVD does not support selection of DVD burners, you cannot assign which DVD burner to use. In order to use your 'non-Apple' DL burner for DL project. You need a French Patch, there are several threads on this subject:

Another burning/duplication question
Greetings,
I've recently joined the world of non-linear editing and DVD production, and have been constantly researching and learning over the past few months.
I've read through several of the threads on this forum regarding all the questions about burning DVD's, bitrates, blank media, burn speeds, etc, etc. One of the things that is mentioned often is the difference between burned discs and discs that are duplicated, or 'pressed' at a duplication house.
So, here's my question...this process that these duplication places use, is the technology at all available to the general public? In other words, can I go out and get some sort of duplication/pressing machine? Or is it something still too magical (a.k.a. expensive) at this point?
Just curious. Again, I'm very much a beginner in this world. I've recently burned my first project successfully. It played fine in my main set top player, but I got a 'no disc' message from an older model test. That got me searching and reading, and here I am.
Thanks in advance for any input offered!I don't know the cost (someone else may) but the general process of a REPLICATED disc is to accept input in the required format (usually tape) and then create a "glass master" and then use this "glass master" to actually PRESS into a special type of disc... just like a coin is made by pressing a master into a smooth, blank piece of the proper metal
Otherwise, To
Burn Error Proof DVDs (Well, close to error proof!)
Use the SLOWEST possible burn option your burner will allow in Encore, since it is much better to take a bit more time burning the disc than it is to burn "fast" and have a disc that won't play
Set the VIDEO portion of the transcoding options to a Maximum of 7,000 so your burned disc will have a better chance at playing in desktop players (which support burned discs, if at all, only as an "after thought" of the DVD specification)
Use AC3 or PCM audio transcode settings for best player compatibility (some discussion of MPEG audio not being supported by all players, especially for NTSC discs)
Buy and use Taiyo Yuden (or Verbatim?) brand blank discs

Merom CPU Compatibility & Technical Question
I read that Intel demonstrated that the upcoming Merom chip was drop-in compatible with the current Core Duo chips. Because the current systems' CPU is soldered to the motherboard I understand that current systems will not be upgradable. My question is timing of their release based on hardware engineering. This question is for the engineers out there.
What other issues would need to be addressed from a hardware perspective in the changeover to the Merom chip? Are there reasons why Apple would not simply drop in the new chips once they start shipping? Do they need to change things for heat management (do the chips run hotter or cooler)? Do they need to update any of the supporting chipsets in order to start shipping Merom systems? Have there been any other reports of competitors' approaches to this chip change? There's no reason they won't just drop them in, its like the PC world which I live in, if its the same socket, just drop it in and if it needs a bios update, update it and you got pretty much a new computer.
as I understand from the Core 2 Duo Line up, its basically an entirely new internal architecture. where as the current core duo is based on the Pentium M, which is really fast already..
not sure about consumption though -
DVD burner died--questions on external burners
Hi,
The burner on my "lampshade" Mac died. I have a few questions. I should add that I'm poor, so I'll be looking at used equipment that won't be state of the art:
1. Most importantly, can I install an external burner on this Mac? If so, is there special software I need to use it, since the hard drive is the Superdrive default?
2. Can I purchase a non-Mac burner? Would it be compatible?
Thanks in advance for your help. At this time, I just know I need something with USB. So I'm confused. You may have to consider using one of the online guides on how to
take apart and replace optical drives and hard disk drives, and do it
yourself. There are important details to be performed, for success.
• iMac G4 Take-apart for Drive and RAM upgrades:
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/imacg4/imacg4takeapart.html
• Mr Tote's iMac G4 take-apart, with images:
http://www.mrtotes.co.uk/page1/page1.html
Replacement 'super-drive' equivalent optical drives for the iMac G4
could probably be purchased through Other World Computing online
and by talking to someone there, not just buying one on their website
may be a way to know what one is best suited (if their expert knows.)
Externally enclosed optical drives for older Macs generally would be
of the FireWire type of unit, with an Oxford-type chipset so it may be
used to boot the computer's OS X install/restore disc as needed, etc.
• External optical drives/super-drives, etc at OWC:
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/optical-drives/
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/optical-drives/superdrives/
There are some titles of third-party software out there, I don't use
them, but they can help use other optical drives work with a Mac.
These may cost more than a replacement internal optical drive from OWC.
A few vendors may include software with an external optical drive;
but that may be too new for use with your old PowerPC-based Mac.
• iMac G4: super multi-drive, hard disk drive, and RAM upgrades:
http://eshop.macsales.com/staticpages/Framework.cfm?page=superdrive/sdl_imacg4.html
And FireWire 400 would be the correct version of this drive/device's
connection to work with the PowerPC iMac G4 series, as a bootable
external drive enclosure; be it either an Optical drive or a hard disk
drive in an external enclosure. (An external hard disk drive can allow
you to make bootable backup clones and copy systems correctly.)
A USB external drive may do OK, if the iMac G4 has USB 2.0 ports;
but it would not work for a Superdrive replacement, nor boot the Mac.
And the first line of system maintenance is to use the OS X install disc
to check/repair and perhaps reinstall (archive/install) the system, and
use Disk Utility on the install DVD to perform optional tasks, etc.
Hopefully someone else browsing through these forums will have some
better ideas, or linked processes you could use to better perform the job.
And I recommend the OWC 'optical superdrive equivalent' replacement.
Good luck & happy computing!

Hi all,
We are using Oracle 9.2.0.6 on RHEL4 64 bit
What is the use of CPU patch.Ealier we are using Sun Solaris server but after migrating to rhel, we are getting problem in one of the applicaion module.
but i don't know whether we are haing any cpu patch applied on the sun server.
and which patch should i applied for oracle 9.2.0.6 and how to apply it.
Does the steps to apply the CPU patch is same as it is applying the patchset of 9.2.0.6.
Please suggest me.As CPU's are security patches (which you can get from Metalink), did you even consider visiting Metalink?
You would have found
https://metalink2.oracle.com/metalink/plsql/f?p=130:10:5691407109246679955::::ALLTEXT,ANYTEXT,EXCTEXT,NONTEXT,KNOWLEDGE,PRODUCT_ID,PLATFORM_ID,SS,ST,NUMHITS,FILTCRIT,FILTCRITVAL:CPU,,,,TRUE,,,0,DR,100,2,Support.CriticalPatchUpdates
Metalink answers all questions on CPU.
You should use available resources, as per the Forums Etiquette post, PRIOR to asking them here, forcing volunteers to summarize or abstract information which IS already on your doorstep.
And you would have noticed you need 9.2.0.8 to apply CPU's.
I also suggest you only ask questions after you have done some research. You shouldn't ask questions like this, and they don't deserve an answer. You can find the answer yourself with little effort.
You seem to think the only thing you need to know to work as a DBA is how to use this forum to ask all of your doc questions. You won't get far this way.

Quicksilver cpu fan replacement question
Hi,
I have 2001 quicksilver 867. The cpu fan had stopped moving. I got it going again by taking it out and moving the fins around, but i'm looking for a replacement.
I found the "OEM" versions but the idea of spending $60 for a fan isn't that appealing.
So i'm considering just getting a standard 3 pin fan, and using an adapter to make it 2 pins.
I was thinking of getting this fan:
http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?mainpage=product_info&cPath=51&productsid=133
and I noticed they have several "2 pin" fan adapters here:
http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=289&main_page=index
So my questions are:
(1) Will that fan above work well enough for the quicksilver cpu?
(2) Do you know which 2 pin adapter would fit the logic board, as they have several types. Type A would be my guess but it's hard to tell from the small pictures.
Thanks!
David KileyI would remove the fan and take it to a local PC store. You should be able to find a reasonably priced replacement at most PC parts retailers.

MOVED: Big Bang XPower - CPU Core Ratio Question
This topic has been moved to Overclockers & Modding Corner.
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=141572.0Just to clarify, is it now set to multi 25 or 26? If 26 with a 160 bclk, it should read about 4.160. What does the RAM speed & timings read? These questions can be verified in CPU-Z. QPI V. of 1.35 seems a bit on the high side. Although every system even with the same components can react different, my RAM when set to 1600 runs easily on 'Auto' (default) QPI V.
Edit: We need to get a ticket in with MSI Tech Support. I just checked mine & it does the same as you are reporting. Set multi to 27, & in Windows & 'Read Only' top of Cell Menu screen, no change is in effect. It always was reporting the correct bclk, but didn't show the multi or actual system speed correctly. CPU-Z with 27 multi set in Cell Menu;
MSI Tech Support doesn't openly involve itself in OC issues, but this is a case of the board not providing full support of the EE CPU. This is with beta bios 1.4b2, is that what you are using also? -
Sorry if the title is vague, I am unsure how to properly word my question down to a single line. Anyways, on to my question, if I have two 16 core processors in a server, but I have 1 virtual machine that is setup with 4 cores, will the vmware only use 4 of the physical cores, or will the processing be distributed among all the cores? If searched the documentation but was unable to find much information about this specific situation. The reason I have it set to 4 cores instead of more is because the application I am trying to run only uses up to 4 core and if I can use vSphere to distribute out that processing it would greatly improve the performance. Thank you in advance.
Welcome to the Community - a VCPU can only run on a single core at a time - so your 4 VCPU vm will run only 4 of the 32 cores that are available in you ESXi host but each - the ESXi host is also smart enough not let the any of the 4 VCPUs share core either. By default the VM's VCPUs can be scheduled on any of the 332 physical cores
I am also moving your question to a more appropriate forum. -
I am using iPhoto 5.0.4. When I select a number of photos (or even one photo) and select slideshow, I get the Ken Burns effect whether the KBE box is checked or not. How do I defeat the KBE? Sometimes it's great-- but I'd like the option for a plain old slideshow as well!
Is there some preference that I need to enable?
Thanks.Hi Randolf,
Make sure it is unchecked on the toolbar and under the settings button -

Is this a standard one-hour report, and does it cross the peak hour of the graph you published, and is it for the same node ?
There are several anomalies here, not the least of which is that your event percentages don't get close to 100%.
To me the thing that really stands out as a possible source of your problems is the 8,386 executions per second - if there has been a recent dramatic change in performance, it may be related to this.
I'd be taking a quick look at the SQL ordered by CPU and SQL ordered by Executions sections of the report for any clues.
I'd also be cross checking the Time model and OS statistics, and instance activity CPU details to see if they were consistent with the Event figures.

Hi everyone,
i own a MSI GS70 2PE and i wonder is there any kind of fans that i can buy that has lower DBI or w.e it's called fan noise level? since when i etc go into bios fans are loud and when i do os install fan becomes loud but goes lower and is on low level but still quite noisy so i wonder is there any kind of laptop fan that gives lower fan noise level but still keeps cpu and gpu cold? since my Lenovo Y510P had dual fans 1 for gpu and 1 for cpu but cpu one was really quiet it was on but hardly any noise on it's low level thats why i'm posting this to see if anyone know fans i can buy for my laptopQuote from: RX-8 on 27-January-15, 12:35:27
The latest version of EC firmware on the official website would be okay.
Given the same heat dissipating ability, lower RPMs mean more air to go through at the same time, which requires re-design the style & angle of the blades, or just re-design a wider diameter of the fan.
( GT72's fans are the quietest fans I've heard of, but they are so big! )
Even if you can find such fans, they may not fit the internal space which GS70 has, or can't be fasten well on the body.
And I didn't see there's any second source of the fans for GS70.
To suppress the fan noise, you can also consider about decreasing the heat generated. If you're not always playing the games or kicking its performance to the edge, just set the Power Options to Balanced or Power saver (sleeping time will be altered too).
well thing is i'm doing really low load on cpu % yet fan in windows 8/8.1 remains on and makes loud noise even rpm is like 3000RPM :/ i have seen other laptops with such load having no noise fro the fan yet fan is blowing out air but not loud as gs70 has but what makes mine quiet is whenever fan goes 0RPM thats quiet point so i will just have to try and find os that wont eat to much cpu up on idle mode.
