Cpu costing is off (consider enabling it)
Hi,
I am using Oracle 10.2.0.3.
Whenever I generate explain plan for any query, the very last line of explain plan is as below.
cpu costing is off (consider enabling it)_
It seems that optimizer didn't considerd CPU stats while generating plan for this.
How to enable CPU statistics here?
The parameter optimizer_mode value is "CHOOSE", and stats are being gathered at an interval of one week.
When I use CPU_COSTING hint in the SQL, then this line went away, and the query plan also started giving CPU % in PLAN output. But how can I make this a default behaviour of optimizer ( Any parameter etc to be set in oracle 10g for this)?
Thanks in advance.
Best Regards,
oratest

MS 6390 CPU fan turns off while loading windows
Hi,
I just bought a MS 6390 mobo and plugged in my AMD 1700 XP into it. Machine boots fine and allows me to mess around with the BIOS without problem. However, when I let Windows 2000 load my CPU fan switches off!
The CPU immediatly begins to overheat and I have to pull the plug.
Anybody knows what could be wrong?
Regards,
AsifToo late! I already changed it
Got a KT4AV instead
Apparantly a lot of MS 6390 boards of this type have been returned because of the same issue (CPU fan problems). The guys at the tech department did have a BIOS update (God knows from where they got that... i couldnt find it). Anyway, I raised a bit of a shing ding and got the mobo changed for a KT4AV (small difference in cost).
Fredrik, I know about the S bracketless 6 ch sound thing, but as far as I can recall the manual on the 6390 didnt give any clue as to how to do it. I have to do the same thing with the KT4AV, but at least the manual is more detailed in explaining that.
Anyway, I am running fine now
Oh I had a bit of chat with a techie at the place...and he strongly recommended the KT4 boards (AV and Ultra)...apparantly those get returned a lot less than others...I hope its true. -

Well, it seems that you have used Hackintosh to migrate or transfer your system from. These kexts are not present in original MacOs X.
On original Mac these kexts prevents it to enter sleep mode.
Solution is to remove these kexts from System/Library/Extensions or to do clean install. -

johnhi,
I like one of the finest explanation and demo was provided in Charles hooper blog. I would have explained the same, but it's own's by charles itself.

How to find the cpu cost and i/o cost by a query
I have a query that give the cpu utilization for a session.
select s.name, m.value from v$statname s, v$mystat m
where s.statistic# = m.statistic#
and name = 'CPU used by this session';
But how do you find the cpu cost and i/o cost by a query?Sounds like you want to use TRACE.

How are you planning to apply this in your code? Make sure you understand what cost tells you and what it does not tell you. And use that value in a sane fashion.
As for an alternative to using EXPLAIN PLAN, you can simply parse a SQL into a cursor without executing it. Then determine the SQL cursor id and address and use DBMS_XPLAN to display its execution plan.
E.g.
SQL> create or replace procedure ParseSQL( sqlStatement varchar2 ) is
2 c integer;
3 begin
4 c := DBMS_SQL.open_cursor;
5
6 DBMS_SQL.parse(
7 c,
8 sqlStatement,
9 DBMS_SQL.native
10 );
11
12 DBMS_SQL.close_cursor( c );
13 end;
14 /
Procedure created.
SQL>
SQL> var sqlID varchar2(100)
SQL> var childNumber number
SQL> var sqlText varchar2(4000)
SQL> begin
2 ParseSQL( 'select /* TEST1 */ * from emp' );
3
4 select
5 sql_text, sql_id, child_number into :sqlText, :sqlID, :childNumber
6 from v$sql
7 where sql_text like 'select /* TEST1 */%';
8 end;
9 /
PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
SQL>
SQL> col PLAN_TABLE_OUTPUT format a50
SQL> select
2 rownum, p.plan_table_output
3 from TABLE( DBMS_XPLAN.Display_Cursor( :sqlID, :childNumber, 'BASIC,COST' ) ) p;
ROWNUM PLAN_TABLE_OUTPUT
1 EXPLAINED SQL STATEMENT:
2 ------------------------
3 select /* TEST1 */ * from emp
4
5 Plan hash value: 3956160932
6
7 -----------------------------------------------
8 | Id | Operation | Name | Cost (%CPU)|
9 -----------------------------------------------
10 | 0 | SELECT STATEMENT | | 3 (100)|
11 | 1 | TABLE ACCESS FULL| EMP | 3 (0)|
12 -----------------------------------------------

SQL> The problem is extracting intelligence from the output as it is raw text. Perhaps not that complex as a where clause can be added to only display line id 0 and then extract the cost value from that line. Regular expressions (not my forte) will likely do this easily. -
Have redeemed a $20 iTunes gift card and at top shows $20 but when I go to purchase anything it is asking to use credut card? CAn anybody tell me what I need to do to make the cost come off my gift card redeemtion and not my credit card??
Hi Kim ...
Might not just be the security code > iTunes Store: My credit card's security code or zip code does not match my bank's records
Apple "verifies" your billing credentials with every transaction.
what does my debit card have to do with my having a redeemed ITunes card
If the total purchase price of the media including any applicable taxes or fees exceeds the balance of the redeemed card, then the difference is charged to your debit or credit card account.

Mb51 ; time-outs, important cpu costs
Hello,
Every day, users running transaction MB51 on the production system (ecc6, Oracle 10.2.0.4) are facing time-out issues (1200 sec).
I had a look at the execution plan, there are important CPU costs, since this a sap standard transaction, I wanted some advice ;

What is the difference between est. cost, CPU cost, and IO cost
When looking at and execution plan there is est. cost, CPU cost, and IO cost.
Can someone explain these and more importantly explain which one is the most
important to tune and the step to take to reduce these cost to a respect level.
I have seen many program hit 10,000 cost and 1 Mio CPU cost and I need to get that down to improve performance.
I am running on 10.2.
Thanks
MikieHi Olivier,
sorry to disagree but:
> They're both important and you'll have to balance
> both. For instance a program accessing the database
> too much (lots of I/O) may run for ages. You can tune
> this program and lower your I/Os, therefore

is just not right.
The amount of work to do for the database to get the job done (that is to deliver the requested results) may vary A LOT!
That is why there is a optimizer at all.
It's true: I/O cost model the time required to perform necessary read/write operations and CPU cost do the same for handling the data in memory.
With indexes, database features active and database versions the optimizer can choose from selecting different access, filter and sorting mechanisms to answer the db requests.
Usually there's not much you can do to the CPU costs - the database has it's internal rating concerning how "expensive" a sort-merge-join will be or a hash-distinct function.
What you can (and usually should) do, is to lower the main contributor to processing and I/O costs: the volume of data.
Therefore one will try to reduce the number of rows to be processed early in the query process. That can either be done by changing the selection itself or via the indexing scheme. Furthermore physical I/O might be reduced by using specific db features (compression, datablock sizing, bitmap indexes, partitioning etc.).
Anyhow, to come back to the original post: it's important to think of costs as time-to-execute modelled in CPU-activity and I/O-operations.
The goal is to deliver the result at the fastest - so, nobody should bother about the absolute numbers when it comes to costs. The question has to be: what execution time is meant with this?

High CPU usage with double buffering enabled
Hello all,
My GUI application is using 100% of the CPU with double buffering (DB) enabled, about 20% with it disabled?
Also with DB enabled is visible slower than without, although there are some flickers.

[SOLVED] [KDE4.1] Mucho cpu use with desktop effects enabled
With KDE4.1rc1+ desktop effects enabled, I'm consistently getting figures of 40-60 percent CPU usage, even when I'm not moving anything around the desktop.
With desktop effects disabled, CPU use is negligible.
This is on a Thinkpad T61p with a T9300 2.5GHz C2D processor, 4Gb RAM, nvidia Quadro FX 570M graphics, running Arch64.
Is this normal?
Last edited by dhave (2008-08-04 09:31:24)Following a suggestion by Pierre, I disabled vsync, which helped dramatically. CPU usage -- with desktop effects enabled -- has dropped from 40-60 percent to < 10 percent, usually around 2-3 percent.
Vsync can be toggled under System Settings / Desktop Effects / General / Advanced Options. I tried all kinds of other xorg.conf tweaks and nvidia-settings options, but this is the one that really helped (the others, I'm not sure about).
Several other users have reported the same thing.
I'm tagging this "solved".

Wireless adapter turned off, wont enable
Hi, I got this Lenovo x201 AC4 yesterday. I installed Ubuntu 11.04, used the wireless till today morning. But then suddenly the wireless icon with LED turned off and wont turn on again and I cannot access any network right now.
Tried restarting, but no help.
It got disabled when the laptop was running on battery battery power.
I saw another similar thread, but the questioneer was using Windows. As the wireless adapter is turned off, I cannot even find and re-enable it from inside ubuntu.
Any help?
Update: The wifi led doesnt blink at the time of POST. The bluetooth one does.I am not sure if I can really help you (I do not have a x201), but since no one else answered yet. I try to give some advices.
The most easiest way to activate the Wireless adapter on Ubuntu is on the right upper corner of your desktop in the wireless menu. but i assume that did not function.
A second method to enable Wireless is to activate it with the key combination Fn+F5, by pressing multiple times you activate and deactivate wireless and bluetooth. Pressing once activates Wireless.
there is also the possibility you deactivated wireless by switching the button on the left side just right from your yellow usb-port. Thats a hardware switch for your wireless, when turned of there is no possibility to activate wireless unless you switch it from red position to green position.
sorry thats all, if there is a driver problem i can not help... -
Would you consider enabling scripted Photoshop to run headless?
Is there ANY chance of having Photoshop run headless?
The Application.visible and Application.displayDialogs properties do not provide airtight control over photoshop's interaction with the desktop.
Even when they are set to false and No, Ps still shows the splash screen and puts up progress bar pop-ups like Reading Photoshop Format and Rasterizing.
Any chance the Application constructor could be overloaded as shown below?
Application(bool runInBackground)
Eg.
// Manipulate a file COMPLETELY in the background...
// ...and it is acceptible if only one thread can be active on Application at once;
// client application will be responsible for preventing concurrent callers
Application app = new Application(false);
app,Open( someDocument );
app, doSomething;
app.ActiveDocument.Close(psSaveBehavior.psAlwaysSave);
[An alternative design would be to have photoshop.exe honor the /Automation switch by going UI-less--setting Application.visible to true would turn on the UI.]

Pete
(phone number available upon request)I'm very much willing to be corrected by someone with inside knowledge and I may be completely off here, but I think a big part of the cross-platform aspect of Photoshop is to a large extent still handled simply by having duplicate code for interface elements like dialog boxes for each platform and things like that. The newer parts seem to be different, but especially the older portions of the code and many of the filters still seem to contain a lot of that (just look at the Displace effect). Maintainig a codebase that has historically grown and been subjected to tight deadlines countless times is a bigger challenge than most people realize.
Reading between the lines of what Adobe has communicated over the last years would indicate that they initially set out to really modernize everything during the Cocoa transition (which was planned to span several release cycles), to do a clean separation between the internals and the interface and to create a cross-platform widget toolkit abstraction layer (at some point, I think they considered to transition to the interface toolkit used in the digital video applications like After Effects and Premiere), but basically, halfway into the process, Apple changed course with the discontinuation of 64-Bit Carbon and thus left Adobe in the cold. Lack of a 64-Bit version for OS X had been generating a significant amount of bad press at that point, too (largely based on misinformed assumptions of what magic and amazing things 64-Bit would offer). The Photoshop engineering team then attempted the impossible and initially tried to implement all the modernizations in one cycle, but halfway through they realized there was no way they were going to make it and decided to go with more or less a direct port of the old Carbon code to Cocoa for the time being. If they hadn't done that, there would have been no Photoshop CS5.
The introduction of the unified panel docking system in CS3 (they are referring to it as "Adobe OWL" I think) and later the application frame was the first step of many towards modernizing the entire interface code and unifying the UI of all the suite applications (before, each application had its own separate implementation of the panel system, and suddenly owning a bunch of former Macromedia products probably didn't improve that situation either). The new dark interface and the new panel-based filters in CS6 seems to be their next logical step. Right now each application appears to still be using its own toolkit for dialog boxes and such, some of them possibly even a lot more than one, and some seem to even use the OS APIs directly (I'm not sure I really want to know all the gory details). Then there is ScriptUI, way too many of those awful Flash/Flex dialog boxes/panels and apparently even the toolbar in the Flash IDE itself, toolkits used by shared libraries that are used in more than one application, the installer and licensing system (I think those are using HTML/WebKit for some reason), then plug-ins and so on. I think someone on the internet once made a list with all the different types of sliders in Photoshop's UI, and there were quite a few of them.
I'm sure the folks at Adobe are doing their very best to modernize and unify all the applications within the constraints of the resources they can afford to dedicate to that kind of task, but I imagine it is quite hard to sell upgrades and pay the bills by telling users "brand new version: nothing new, but now using much more elegant code to do exactly the same thing as before, and you only had to wait six years, and we only killed five engineers in the process! buy now!". -
Satellite 2410-303 hangs when CPU cache level 2 was enabled
I have Satellite 2410-303 Bios version 1.40 and when i enable CPU cache level 2 the laptop dose not work and still hang.
So now I only enable CPU cache level 1 and disable cache level 2 so the laptop run slowly.Hi
Well, what to say, the Level 2 cache is an external CPU memory.
Possibly there is something wrong with the CPU? Who knows
Did you try to update the BIOS? Check if its possible and if the newer BIOS version is available.
Sorry but I cannot suggest any other solutions because for me it looks like an hardware problem and in such case the ASP help is needed.
