CPU Usage - Whats Normal
I purchased another mac and a new copy of FCS2 and got all that running without any issues the last few days;
What I'm seeing is a little odd, and was looking for some guidance/opinions on what may or may not be an issue;
I'm running the 8 core @ 3GHz - currently I have only the one HD in it, but according the Activity Monitor thats only peaking at 2MB/s and the average while I'm testing is well below 1.5MB/s
I have an odd memory config, its 32GB, using 8x4GB Kits - exact same memory - apple says only 16GB is supported, the system sees 32GB, the memory monitor reports 29GB free - Apple Store guys said it was a waste of money, but would work no issues.
I'm running a preview render on a 45 Min video, that is HDV 60i, the entire time line needs to be rendered for an overlay/transparency;
I'm also running a compressor job on a copy of the source 45 min video hdv 60i and compressor is converting that to a SD DVD file, using the apple preset for 90 min video.
I was wondering why the CPU (combined 8 cores) doesnt go anywhere past 60% with the workload thats being requested.
Hard Drive should have lots of room, and memory doesn't seem to be an issue...
I was wondering if there was something that could help drive up performance (ie, for FCS and or compressor to use more CPU time to get things done quicker)
As a side note, I ran before I started both tasks, the CPU count was about 40% average usage.
Any advice would be helpful.
Thanks in advance;
FCP is a 32bit application which means it doesn't make use of more than 4gb in real world terms. You have 28gb of RAM that does nothing for you.
To make more effective use of compressor, look into virtual clustering.

CPU Usage--what is "normal" at idle?
Hello,
When I run activity monitor at idle, the % user CPU usage shows at 99%. Activity monitor shows as using the most % CPU at 1.10. % System shows at 1%.
Why is the computer running at an apparent 50% of available CPU at idle? Is this normal?
MacBook Pro 2.16 Intel Core Duo Mac OS X (10.4.8) 2 gig RAMThanks Jim,
Your post got me thinking. Another thread referenced a utility called applejack
http://applejack.sourceforge.net/
I ran that, and cleared out all the cache files. Now both user and system CPU usage is around 1% at idle.
I guess I'll add applejack to the regular maintenance schedule.

Hi,
i just installed oracle 10g on my laptop and it uses too much resources. cpu usage is always around 96-100%. whats the reason that it starts by itself and is taking too much resources.
RajThe reason it starts up automatically is because the service (OracleService<name>) is set by default to auto start. You can change this to manual if you don't want the database to startup every time you reboot your laptop.
As far as CPU usage...Do you have a real-time virus scanner installed? Those things will kill a laptop. I'd rather have the virus (not really).
I have 10g on my Windows XP desktop and the CPU usage is normally at 0%. It takes up a lot of memory, but if it's mostly idle, it doesn't consume much CPU resources. -
Tarantella EE 4 - CPU usage goes 80%
Hi,
i\'ve a secure global desktop 4.0 installed and working fine almost time,
but randomly a single ttaxpe process goes out of control and get
60-70-80% CPU blocking all other activity. I\'ve to kill the process andall come back to normality. This happens about one a day. Is there a fix
for this problem?

Hi barrie, thank you for your help.
I've got a server with 1.8GB ram; my JVM memory settings was: 58-150%-512.
Now i've changed them to 512-150%-1024. What do you suggest for these
settings considering that i've about 150 webtop session open simultanely?
Either of these settings is probably okay. The whole tuning thing is
less of an issue with the 1.5 JVM anyway. If you only have this number
of sessions I don't think this can be the problem.
By real, the xpe process doesn't block the entire server, but only
tarantella; i still can connect using ssh/telnet and access any other
service, but not to tarantella.This makes more sense but it may mean that the rogue process is keeping
the rest of the system busy or vice versa. Can you access SGD as another
user? The PE manager (ttauxserv) utilises a namespace that is user
based, so it is more likely that the rogue process has deadlocked part of
this namespace making it impossible to log in as the user of that xpe
process. I can think of two ways to get a handle on this rogue process:
1. gather the ouput of truss (strace on Linux) -- this may show nothing
but that would indicate a tight CPU loop so would be useful info.
2. generate a core file by sending the process a signal; this would not
produce very useful information unless the binary was unstripped.
Support should be able to provide you with this form of binary; I
can't distribute them via the newsgroup unfortunately.
>
I try to upgrade a local copy of tarantella 4 to 4.1; the entire process
has gone fine without trouble and i don't lost my settings/object. Do you
suggest to me to upgrade or to leave the 4.0 in out server?
4.0 was a technology change from 3.x, although 4.0 is stable and should
run fine, 4.1 fixes problems that were discovered in the field with the
new webtop infrastructure etc. Since it doesn't radically alter the
footprint of 4.0 I think it is worth having. I can't promise it fixes this
problem though we would need to get more information to work on.

Barrie
Thanks again
Hi Mirko
I don't think 606003 is your problem, that could only occur very rarely,
if at all. It was never reproduced in-house, or shown to be an actualproblem,
but was proved to be a logical flaw in how telnet connections were managed
internally.
I'm not sure how a protocol engine process, even one consuming an entire
CPU, could manage to stop a server from responding, that doesn't make a
lot of sense as a cause on it's own.
I'm still inclined to think that either this rate of CPU usage is normal
or is a consequence of some other issue. Have you managed to make a
truss file of the system calls made by the ttaxpe process in this state?
I would also check the JVM tuning values you have for this system i.e.
the size of JVM you require. The most common cause of unavailablity,
other than networking problems, is when the JVM in the Jserver fails to
respond because it has grown to a maximum size and is severely
constrained by the garbage collector.
4.1 is mostly bug fixes to 4.0 so I would not consider it a major change
to upgrade.

Yes, I'm sure because it stays at about 80% too much time. When this
happens, i can't neither get to tarantella login form, all tarantella
commands stop respondig (ex. tarantella status never return), who are
alredy logged in a webtop session works very slowly ecc ecc.
In the fix list of 4.1 there is this:
606003 Fixed the problem that causes ttaexecpe to spin in some
circunstance.
I think it could solve my problem but i'd like not reinstalling/upgrading
my system because i've just upgraded from 3.32 to 4.0.
At the moment, i've written a bash script that every 5 mins check if there
is a ttaxpe pid uses more than 70% cpu and kill it.
thank you

Hi Mirko
Are you certain this is not normal behaviour, i.e. the work is being
driven
by the client application? If you run truss on this process it might
tell us whether it is responding to requests or in some sort of internalspin?
When you say "blocking all other activity", can you be more precise in
saying what you can and can't do?
I would upgrade to 4.1 in any case. There was a similar incident in 4.0
but I can't say whether or not it is anything to do with what you are
seeing
with just this information though.
Thanks

IcedTea High CPU usage and multiple jobs created
High CPU usage and multiple jobs created while streaming data via a java applet from a secure/certified website. CPU usage is normal for a few minutes then suddenly jobs multiply and CPU usage climbs on one of the jobs.
Jobs with the following command begin to multiply in my job queue with one job showing CPU usage at 368% and staying resident in memory (yeah, a long one):
/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk/jre/bin/java -Xbootclasspath/a:/usr/share/icedtea-web/netx.jar:/usr/share/icedtea-web/plugin.jar:/usr/share/java/js.jar: -classpath /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk/jre/lib/rt.jar sun.applet.PluginMain /run/user/1000/icedteaplugin-tbattist-SZ3xKO/7160-icedteanp-plugin-to-appletviewer /run/user/1000/icedteaplugin-tbattist-SZ3xKO/7160-icedteanp-appletviewer-to-plugin /run/user/1000/icedteaplugin-tbattist-SZ3xKO/7160-icedteanp-plugin-debug-to-appletviewer

I also get the following message in my system log when starting to stream:

Anybody having this issue or clue on what to do? I am wondering if recent changes to openssl (heartbleed) might have java change ramifications? Should I submit bug to Icedtea?

Here is a good tutorial on Java. Evidently, what I called "jobs" is referred to as processes and threads in this tutorial. The tutorial states that multithreaded execution is an essential feature of the Java platform which explains the avalanche of threads I observe. However, I am still stumped at what causes the avalanche of threads and excessive CPU consumption for such a mediocre task. Also the system log says that IcedTea has an error stating "Application title was not found in manifest. Check with application vendor". I interpret this to mean that IcedTea does not recognized some application. What application? .....the applet? -
Macbook Pro Extremely hot with NO cpu usage
I have a Macbook pro 15" (Mid-2010). Recently my mac is running extremly hot specially when connected to the AC power.
I'm using iStat Pro to monitor sensors, and while charging sometimes CPU reaches 101 degrees celsius. When I detach the power cord, it stays at about 80-85 degrees. My cpu usage is normal, about 1-4%. All the bottom of my mac feels hot, specially under the CPU, but the middle parts too. Fans are also working with highest speed.
Is it a known hardware problem?
Another problem which I've had around the same time, I use "Hardware Growler" to check for usb connections. When I connect a USB flash disk, sometimes it shows a lot of connections and disconnections for Keyboard, Trackpad, IR Remote and stuff. Pushing the usb around doesn't show the same symptom, so it's not a broken board or connector or something.
Have you seen a similar problem? What can I do?I've solved my problem by resetting PRAM and SMC. I'm writing my solution here so others can try it if they have the same problems.
To reset PRAM, follow instructions in this link: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
and to reset SMC, follow this link: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
I think my problem started when I upgraded Parallels Desktop to version 7 (from version 6). I'm not sure if it was the cause, but some kernel extension in parallels could've corrupted SMC and/or PRAM. -
Bug!?! 100% CPU usage when referencing secured JARs in unsecured JNLP
hi,
i think i just found a bug in jws but i'm not sure yet. it would be nice if somebody can verify this before i create a bug report.
this is my JNLP file (test.jnlp):
<jnlp ...>
<information>
<title>Test</title>
<shortcut online="true">
<desktop/>
</shortcut>
</information>
<security>
<all-permissions/>
</security>
<update check="always" policy="always"/>
<resources>
<java version="1.6"/>
<jar href="jar/mySecuredJar.jar" download="eager" main="true"/>
</resources>
<application-desc main-class="test.MyTest"/>
</jnlp>this is the file structure on the server:
download/ // public folder
test.jnlp
jar/ // private folder secured via basic authentication
mySecuredJar.jarwhen i access the jnlp file for the first time via browser the jws login dialog opens asking me for credentials since test.jnlp internally references a jar that is in a secured area. while this jws dialog is open my cpu usage is normal - javaw.exe takes about 5%.
however, when i open my application for the 2nd time via desktop shortcut, the jws authentication dialog opens again (jws looks for updates of my jar before the application starts) and javaw.exe takes about 95% of my cpu as long as the dialog is open!!!
when i put the jnlp file in the secured area as well, everything works smoothly. however, this forces users to enter credentials in a browser authentication dialog (browser needs to access the secured jnlp) as well as in the above mentioned jws authentication dialog.
can anybody reproduce this? should i file a bug report?
i tested this on win xp with jre 1.6.0_11.

Oracle 8.0.5 --------- CPU Usage 99%
I have installed oracle on a P4 machine with default parmaeters.
now CPU usage of oracle80.exe is 99%.
Can anyone help me to bring it to normal.
Please help me out of it.
Fawadthe configuration of my system is
P4 1.8
RAM 256 PC 800
SGA 128 Mb
DB_Block_size = 2 k
CPU Usage is not always 100%
Till yesterday evening it was quite fine. but today when i started the machine, this was the situtaion. Keep in mind that there is no change in usage / resources / configuration till the last week.
The situation remains the same even if
1. No other application is running on the server
2. No client is connected.
The CPU usage is normal till the no-mount state but as i open the database it goes to 99%. (keep in mind that there is no session created / activated at this stage but the usage is 99%)
i hope this explanation can better help you out to find a solution.

Why is Flash CPU usage so high on my PC?
To other psoters here - Please do not hijack my thread for any other performance issues with Flash other than high CPU usage.
This thread is (hopefully) dedicated to why the CPU usage on my desktop PC jumps when I go to a page with flash 'content'. Thank you!
I am hoping that there is an answer for why my computer is using a very high amount of CPU percentage when I am viewing flash content?
I am running Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2 on a Gateway GT5432 desktop computer.
I have Shockwave Flash version 11.7.700.169 installed.
I am using Firefox version 20.0.1 (but I have seen same problem of high CPU with Google chrome).
Here is one page that is causing the high CPU usage.
- http://logansroadhouse.com/Default.aspx
That page appears to have lots of Flash content.
If I open that logans roadhouse page, my CPU usage goes from an average of 12%, to 80%!
The process I see jump are:
- Firefox's "plugin-container.exe" goes from 0% to about 50%
- Firefox browser "firefox.exe" goes from around 8% to 14%
- Adobe's plugin "FlashPlayerPlugin_11_7_700_169.exe" goes from 0% to 16%
- TOTAL CPU change from 8% to 80% after opening up just this one page !
When I close the page, the CPU usage goes down again. Open again - CPU goes high again.
Also if I go to the firefox addons page and DISABLE the SHOCKWAVE FLASH plugin, then go to that Logans Roadhouse page, very little of the content I saw with Flash enabled is visible - which I take to mean it is a page consisting of lots of Flash 'content'. Also the CPU usage remains low (8%) if I go to that page - after disabling the Shockwave Flash plugin.
I have seen the CPU also go high on youtube.com pages also - CPU jumps just as I said above - if Flash is enabled. CPU then drops after disabling Flash plugin.
I was hoping you had a fix for my problem? My PC becomes almost unusable with the CPU so high. It sure looks like it is the Flash plugin driving the CPU so high.I am also facing the same problem from last 2-3 weeks since i upgraded my flash player to latest one.
All softwares and drivers are upto-date.
I play wartune MMO flash browser based game (also applicable to youtube videos) which is now using above 80% of CPU. Before upgrading, CPU usage was normal around 5-15% depending upon the events, but not more than 20% even if i open 3-4 accounts of wartune in different windows at the same time. It happens in all browsers (IE10, Mozila22.00, Opera12.15, Chrome27.0.1453.116 m).
I tried all solutions like disabling hardware acceleration, flash cache size to unlimited, clearing all flash cache etc but the same problem.
Please fix this problem as soon as possible.

Nexus 1000V CPU usage - Lost connection
Hello.
Sometimes, a VM lose network connection.
No problem where detected on the network to explain this problem.
This VM (running Windows Server 2003 R2) is connected through VMware flexible network adapter.
I verified all parameters in the running config of this virtual port : no difference with other VMs.
The only thing a noticed is when connections are lost, CPU usage of the VSM VM is about 60% (shown in vCenter performance charts), while the CPU usage is normally staying under 5%.
I look at the return of show log command in the VSM but nothing is logged about CPU usage or lost connection of the VEM.
How can I explaind and/or correct these loses of network connection ?
Thanks in advance.Julien,
A few questions.
1. Version of 1000v and ESX
2. Only the one Win2k3 VM affected?
3. Have you tried the VMXNet3 driver? It's the recommended one for Windows & 1000v.
4. When the issue occurs are the VSM and VM running on the same ESX host?
5. How frequently does the issue occur & any pattern? (time of day etc)
The VSM doesn't really have much bearing on a VMs network operation. Once the VEM the VM is running on has been programmed it should stay running fine, unless the VEM loses connectivity to the VSM, and you say this hasn't happend - correct?
Can you also attach the output of "show log" from the VSM, in & around the time you see the high CPU timestamps?
Thanks,
Robert -
High cpu usage when idle / x230
Hi all,
I have an i5 x230, win8 pro installed on a crucial m4 msata ssd, 16gb of ram. I lately noticed a sharp drop in battery life. I believe this is due by high cpu utilization when idle, which I see from task manager, and shows the System process hovering above 30% cpu utilization. This goes down when I restart, but comes up again after a while, possibly when coming back from sleep.
Does anyone have any idea about this? I tried to search the knowledge base a bit, but nothing came up.
Thanks!
Solved!
Go to Solution.Indeed it was risdxc64.sys; I used process explorer to find out. I uninstalled the win 8 driver, and installed back the win 7 driver, and CPU usage is normalized.
Thanks for pointing in the right direction! -
After using my computer for some time, CPU usage climbs to about 90% (ca. 65% user / 26% system) and fans run at high speed, but there is no processes that seem to use CPU (other than Activity Monitor itself ~1%).
This has happened a few times recently. It happens when I've used my computer for some time, hours or a couple of days (I usually put my computer to sleep when not using it but rarely shut it down). I've tried to quit all running apps incl. Growl, Dropbox, and anything that could be responsible to this but with no results. Putting computer to sleep for a long time doesn't help, cpu usage will climb instantly after wake up. Restarting system is the only thing that helps.
Most of the time I use my laptop with external monitor, lid closed and connected to power supply. When experiencing this, opening the lid causes fans to slow down, but CPU usage remains high and battery drains quick.
Any ideas what might cause this?
My MBP is 15" model with Core 2 Duo 2,66 GHz (MacBookPro 5,3), OS X version is 10.6.8, all available updates are installed.Perform a SMU reset.

Remove the anti-virus, it's running a root level process all the time that's taking your CPU and it's not necessary as there are no Mac viruses, Apple has the trojan angle covered already.
Always on anti-virus on a Mac is always a source of problems, also is MacKeeper, uninstall that here if you have it.

If you need to clean the Windows filth off PC files, then use the free, run as you need, ClamXav.

It seems your machine is used in a corporate enviroment, thus likely a rule that anti-virus must be used, you can avoid high CPU usuage by using the ClamXav instead. -

And what do you do with that spare CPU cycles? Imagine that things are now better as the CPU utilisation has dropped by 10% or so?
What are the ways to control CPU usage precisely in database host that has multiple 10g instances. That is the kernel's job. Or do you think you know better than the very sophisticated processing and scheduling models that the kernel support - and should override that and control that from userspace?
I fear that particular instances overallocate CPU resource on the host and this affects performance of other instances on the host if CPU_COUNT value is set to default for every instances. Sounds like baloney to me. What you fear and not not fear does not change reality. What is the reality? What is the problem? In crystal clear technical details? -

When I am in e-mail, I sometimes get the spinning color wheel, which lock up everything. when it doesn't go away, I see on the activity monitor, that CPU usage is very high (99%), for a process calles " Safari web content'. When I click on the proccess and quite, the CPUusage goes way down. Problem is that I have to then log back in to e-mail. What can I do to eliminate this proble. thanks
How much FREE RAM do you have when this occurs. It's easy to tell, when it beach balls open Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) click the System Memory tab and note how much FREE RAM is listed. If it's 500MB or less it's time for a RAM upgrade.
