Crawl Log Error: "The filename or extension is too long."

Hello All,
I get this error for some files on my SharePoint 2010 error log. The fix suggested
here does not work as its for earlier versions of sharepoint 2010. I have verified the files in question have a title lenght of 120 characters and Name(Link) with character lenght of 71.
Whats weird is sharepoint indexes some similarly named files but exempts the other. These files are basically the same just named different as they belong to different users.
Any help?

It could be because of this also:
Assume that a custom list in a Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010 site or in a Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 site contains a multiline text column. If the data size of the custom column is more than 100 kilobytes (KB), only the first 100 KB of the data
is indexed when you perform a crawl on the SharePoint site. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
The filename or extension is too long.

  • Message filename and path is too long to be copied-How to fix?

On Windows 7, TB ver 24.6.0, I use a program called SecondCopy to copy my email at shutdown from my C drive on my workstation to our file server.
I get several messages each day like this for the copy to be saved on our network data share:
7/4/2014 9:07:16 PM - Unable to create \\Oz\Data\System\Users\billr\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\5kxps6et.default\ImapMail\imap.googlemail-4.com\INBOX.mozmsgs\urn.correios.msg.201211050157328fade3baa08b405e9a940681276b34d9%401352080653478.rte-svc-onebox-na-1d-i-8da6c8f1.us-east-1.amazon.com.wdseml Cannot create file "". The filename or extension is too long
I've done some abbreviating of folder names, but my names pale in comparison to the LOOOOONG names TB gives them.
    How can I fix this?

'''''I've done some abbreviating of folder names, but my names pale in comparison to the LOOOOONG names TB gives them.'''''
That is because wdseml files are simply files created to allow windows search to index your mail. I do not allow it and safe quite a lot of totally wasted disk space on a feature I do not use. Thunderbird has a perfectly good search engine. At least as good as windows search.
Your mail is stored in MBOX files higher up in the profile along with a file of the same name with an MSF extension that indexes the folder contents. One file and one index per folder of mail. In the example above, it will be \\Oz\Data\System\Users\billr\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\5kxps6et.default\ImapMail\imap.googlemail-4.com
So I would suggest backing up your profile minus these space takers and seriously consider simply disabling windows search. Tools menu (Alt+T) > options > advanced > General under system integration.
Beyond that we all have to live within the 256 character limitation on path length imposed by windows.

  • Cp leads to  "error processing extended attributes: Argument list too long"

With certain PDF files to which I've added a lot of extended attributes (using Skim.app, a PDF reader/annotator which stores its notes in extended attributes), Chronosync and Finder drag-drops don't preserve extended attributes like they're supposed to (i.e. the notes aren't viewable on copies of the document). When I use cp to do they copying, the following message appears in system.log:
error processing extended attributes: Argument list too long
    Googling it returns no results

    Hi Derick,
error processing extended attributes: Argument list too long
I have no idea why you get this error when copying a file...
There is a max size for each extended attribute (about 3800bytes), and if I try to create (by using a simple C program) an attribute larger than this limit then I get "Argument list too long" error. But in your case you are trying to make a copy of an existing PDF file whose extended attributes should be smaller than the limit, of course (Skim has no magical power of creating an attribute larger than the limit; if the note is too large then I guess Skim just splits the note into two or more attributes).
Q1: do you get the error only if you (try to) copy a PDF file with large notes? or you also get the error for a file with only small notes? How about a PDF file with many small notes?
Q2: are you copying the PDF file to external volumes? If so, are you sure it is HFS+? What happens if you copy the PDF file to the same internal disk volume, for example
    cp your.pdf tmp.pdf

  • Error in crawl log "Error while crawling LOB contents. ( Error caused by exception: Microsoft.BusinessData.Infrastructure.BdcException The shim execution failed unexpectedly - The method or operation is not implemented..; SearchID "

    Hi
I get the following error in my crawl logs
"Error while crawling LOB contents. ( Error caused by exception: Microsoft.BusinessData.Infrastructure.BdcException The shim execution failed unexpectedly - The method or operation is not implemented..; SearchID "
Because of this i suspect, the search results are not including those aspx pages marked as "Hide physical urls from search".
This error is not available in the another environment where the aspx pages are coming in the results.
    Thanks
    Joe

    Hi Joe,
    Greetings!
Reset the index and re-crawl. That usually clears it
If you are using NTLM authentication, then make sure that you specified the PassThrough authentication for crawling
Probably you need to debug the BDC code that underlies the external content types.

would request your support for resolving this type of issue

    1. Are you able to browse the sites on SP server. server is unavailable means that application pool
of that site is down. Check application pool on all server. if you start any application pool. make sure it does not stop few minutes later. you need to update password if it does stop
    2. Create a disable loopbackcheck of registry on all servers

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926642/en-us
    3. Create a new search service application and check if you face same issue.
    4. I assume you have change some password or other setting when you started facing this issue. what changes were made in environment

  • How to know the filename and extension of a file in PKCS7  envelope

Hi! I've a programm that makes a PKCS7 file. I'm enveloping just one file at a time. I want to know if there is a way to know the filename and extension of the file INSIDE de PKCS7 envelope. Because I receive a file that has .p7 extension, but the real document, the one to be decyprted, I don't know its name nor its extension, and I need both for writing it (I will not just invent some name).
    Best regards!

The construct of the PKCS7 structure you have, is defined in rfc2633. The part defining EncapsulatedContent is introduced in CMS [rfc2639], where no such attribute for a file name is saved in the structure.
In some occasions, when it is critical, organizations add own object identifier and attibutes to save such descrptivie information as filename and extension.
A practical approach is, on the signing side, sign the file A.ext to A-ext.p7m resp. A-ext.p7s
You can not assume a global approach to get back the original filename (if you have no agreement on not the signing peer as above) of the encapsulated data. The reason is, the encapsulated data field is general and it does not neccesarily mean it was a file (a part of a stream or any definite sequence of bytes in general).

"Event Viewer cannot open the event Log or Custom view. Verify that the Event log service is running or query is too long. The instance name passed was not recognized as valid by a WMI data provider(4201)"
This error keeps cropping up now and again on most of our domain controllers (OS-2008 AND 2008R2)...Usually a restart fixes the issue however the issue repeats and security logs don't generate.
Any advice on how to fix this issue permanently would be greatly appreciated.

  • BMR-SS backup fails with error "the specified network name is no longer available"

We are running DPM 2012 SP1 on a Windows Server 2008 R2 system, backing up a Windows Server 2012 system that is a DC.  The agent version is 4.1.3417.0.  Both the DPM server and the DC are physical systems - brand new HP Proliant 360's.
When creating the replicas for the 2012 server the first time, the backups work fine, and then for a day or so after that.  After a couple of days, the BMR-SS backups fail with the error "the specified network name is no longer available".
I can watch the backup happening in the Windows Server Backup console on the protected server - the BMR backup goes up to 99% and then fails.  BMR backups on all the other servers are working - we have a mix of Win2008R2 and Win2012.
Here is what I have tried:
I can connect to the UNC path on the backup server without a problem during and after the backup is happening.
    Tried reinstalling the DPM agent.
Tried backing up directly from the protected server to another server's network share, which worked.
I can copy multiple gigabyte files directly from the protected server to the DPM file share without a problem (the same one that DPM uses for the replica)
Tried turning off the SCEP real-time protection during the backup.
Any help would be appreciated - thanks.

    llo Boudewijn
    I followed Boudewijn's suggestion.
The Windows 2012R2 servers had no recovery partition in disk C. I created one (400MB) following http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2930294/en-us and
DPM system restore worked. But just once.
So this is not the solution to the problem......
Is no one else having issues with DPM bare metal protection of Windows 2012R2 servers?

  • Error message :ORA-01704: string literal too long

    Hello:
I need your help. I have a long long string must be insert to
database. I use long data type and long varchar data type to
define table. But I got the error messages is ORA-01704: string
literal too long when I insert data. Please tell me the solution.
    Thank you so so much.

    Hello,
I have a table with a column "XML_Data" of type CLOB.
I am trying to insert XML of the size 59975. I
get a error message ORA-01704: string literal too
    long.
How to enter that large XML??
    Regards,
Sanjeev.Try using Oracles XMLDB, by dropping the XML file into the XMLDB WebDAV area and then you can access it directly through the database "resource_view". No limits on file size whatsoever.
If you're using XML within an Oracle database you're better off doing things this way as it gets stored in an XMLType column (sys.xmltype) which is a superset object of the CLOB datatype, providing all the object methods you need to navigate, update and query your XML. You won't be able to do much with it just sitting in a CLOB column without re-writing the wheel that Oracle have already built.

  • How to get only the filename and extension for a text item?

Suppose there is a non-database text item called :myfilename
    :myfilename := 'C:\SomeFolder\SomePath\myfile.doc';
I would like to get the file name only without the full path,
    i.e. myfile.doc
and the file extension, i.e. 'doc', 'bat', 'java', 'xhtml' etc., i.e. the last few chars from the right to the period.
    Any help is welcome.

    Thanks for the hints.
I defined the non-database Text Item called FULLFILENAME and another two text items called FILE_NAME, FILE_EXTENSION. The following can extract the file extension,
    select substr(:FULLFILENAME,instr(:FULLFILENAME,'.')+1) into :FILE_EXTENSION from dual;
    e.g.
    :FULLFILENAME := 'C:\MyFolder\AnotherFolder\file.doc';
    FILE_EXTENSION becomes 'doc'
but I would also like to extract only the filename without path into FILE_NAME,
    i.e. file.doc
    Please give more hints. Thanks.
