Crazy Data Usage...

I'm on the 200 MB data limit on my plan. I have the AT&T Wireless app on my iPhone, which I frequently use to check how much data I've been using. But lately it's been screwy...
It was the next-to-last day of my billing cycle and I had used 150 MB of the 200...but when I woke up in the morning, I had a text stating that I had used 100% of my data and was now being charged for extra. With 1 day left of my billing cycle! I know apps can drain data, but 50 MB literally overnight?
Today I did not use data at all, I only used my phone when I was on Wifi and I checked the Wireless app out of curiosity. It said I had used 17 MB of data today. What the heck?
I cleared out some of my apps I wasn't using to see if maybe one app was doing it...
Has anyone else experienced this? Am I missing something?

When I got my iPhone 4, it was put on a new tarif from O2 ( UK) of 500mb data per month wheras I got unlimited data on my iPhone 3. I checked my data usage over the 18 months I had my 3 and it worked out at around 100 -150 mb per month, sometimes less. The 500mb cap seemed miles away...
Now, with my 4, my data usage is generally 300mb + and I dont do anything more with it than with my old phone.
My iPhone 4 is using more data somehow. Maybe O2 knew this and that is why they put the 500mb cap on the tarif hoping people would go over and increase their profits?
I have never got to the bottom of the excess data usage, but it seems common to most countries and suppliers.
Oh, my data this month is 360mb. I have been home more this month than before so I have been using wifi not 3G for any data usage!
Something is wrong or at least, not quite right here.

  • Crazy data usage suddenly on Mifi! 10gb in one day?

I noticed earlier this month that I got a notification for my data usage only about 10 days into my plan and thought it was unusual, but as my son had been streaming a music video I increased my plan, downloaded said video and disconnected his computer from wifi.  Then, 3 days ago I get another notification and tell my son to no longer play games on his iphone and increase my plan yet again.  Today, I get another notification (son at school and wifi on his phone and computer are off) and I increase, yet again to 40GB!!!  I then go around and see what is connected to wifi, our ipad (which was only on a kindle book, not a game or surfing internet, nothing unusual), our Hopper from Dish (which I then disconnected, we do not stream as 4g is too slow and we don't want to use up our data) and turn off the wifi on 2 other iphones (that were running nothing in the background, but did it just in case).  I then almost immediately get an alert that I am at 77% of my new data plan (30.8 gb now) and I begin working on an excel spreadsheet with nothing running on my computer.  A couple of hours later I am at 90% of my data and now, as I write this message, I have gotten 2 more alerts saying that I am now over my 40 gb, so that would be at least 10gb of data used just in the last 6 hours!  A few hours ago I chatted with a Verizon chat and she said that it could be my phones, ipads, hoppers, basically anything but they cannot tell what,  I disconnected everything except this computer and restarted the mifi.  Something is clearly wrong.  They want me to turn it off every night for the next week before they will open a problem ticket but at this rate my bill is going to be absolutely insane!  I haven't changed any of my habits from the last year, other than what I mentioned earlier this month so I am completely baffled.  Help!
    See my log:

I have had VERY high data usage. 3GB in a few hours time. Verizon help line could not figure it out. I had a Verizon Jetpack 890L. I up graded to a newer model Verizon Jetpack MiFi 6620L in the middle of November. Data usage when even HIGHER! I noticed HIGH data usage in August of 2014. The HIGH data continued in September, October, and November of 2014. The newer Jetpack MiFi 6620L used even MORE data!
Verizon tech support was not much help. They wanted to know if I had changed the Jetpack password and they thought that someone was using my Jetpack WiFi. The problem is I live in a VERY rural area. My nearest neighbor is MORE than a mile away. My wireless network connection does not show ANY OTHER users! I still changed my password on the Jetpack. I normally change my passwords on a monthly basis. These changes made NO DIFFERENCE in my HIGH data usage. They also asked what was connected to my Jetpack. I have a phone by another provider. I DO NOT use the phone with the Blue Tooth or WiFi on my Jetpack . It's NOT needed for a clear phone signal. I only have my laptop (HP Pavilion) connected to the Jetpack. I have connected my printer by cable and don't even use the wireless printing functions. STILL NO CHANGE IN DATA USAGE!
The Verizon tech also suggested that I have an Internet Security and Antivirus software. I have used Norton Internet Security and Antivirus software for a decade or more without any problems. The tech suggested that maybe that was the problem. NOT! He felt that the Cloud setting maybe using all this data. I use Norton 360 with the Norton Zone Cloud. I DID NOT receive ANY FIXS from Verizon!
I also called Norton who provides my Internet Security and Antivirus software. I had been running these packages on an on going basis. I had not shown ANY threats or problems in the past year or more. I had the tech go over my settings to make sure that they were not the problem of HIGH Data Usage. My Norton Zone or Cloud settings were average without any high drain. He asked that I go back to Verizon!
I finally have found that I may have had Malware that was in my software. I used Malwarebytes. It works well wth my Norton 360. It has slowed my high data usage BUT NOT ELIMANATED the problem. Malwarebytes is a free service. You can also download it for free. You can purchase advance or premium packages on the internet and at some stores if you want a hard copy. It's always worth a try!
At this point I have run out of options!

  • Iphone 5 crazy data usage

I just purchased the iPhone 5 for my daughter.  Apparently, the iPhone 5 doesn't recognize wifi unless you go into settings and turn something off.  Att sent codes to the phone and gave a 25.00 credit.  They tried to say we didn't purchase a larger data plan when we upgraded..I said NO!  I then told the rep to look my daughters data usage at 2am every morning..  Something was downloading using 200 each time...  He had only 10 apps on the phone...Hmmmm  Lets see if it works

The phone only uses wifi when it is plugged in to power.   When it goes into sleep mode, the wifi signal will drop and then use only cellular.
Also, on the AT&T bill, all usage is added on in the evening, not as you go along during the day.   So most likely the usage is not happening at 2AM but that is when it is being totaled and added to your usage bill.   The usage printed at 2AM is for the 24 hour period prior.

  • 999-999-9999 & data usage when phone sitting on table untouched

    Hi,
I understand this has been asked before and I know they are supposed to be blocked calls or as Verizon told me "numbers from other carriers who don't supply the information".  I am still at odds with this because I have 4 of these calls showing up under current usage and only one of them is an incoming and I do remember receiving and answering a call that said it was "restricted" so 1 out of the 4 is not an issue.
I have never in my life dialed "*69" to block my number on a phone, neither on my cell phone or home phone when I had one. I remember now that you could do it but I didn't even know what you had to dial to do that until someone told me when this came up. The other three all have numbers in the "Description" column so they don't list a city like my other outgoing calls.
Also, 2 of these were in the 4 AM hour...wouldn't I remember making a phone call at 4 AM, especially if I had to dial *69 before the number? And also, these three that appear to be "outgoing" are NOT listed in my phone's history of phone calls made. And no one had access to my phone but me. No one. Anyone have any idea what these could be?
And also, although this may need to be on another board...data charges coming in the wee hours of the morning, like between 12-1 AM and 4-6 AM and I have not touched my phone. And I have no alerts set, except I have occasionally gotten a "you have new content" but have not found what this is talking about either. And I had a data usage show last night at 12:29 AM and I remembering checking the time at 4:07 AM and there was no notification on my phone. Totally stumped over this too. Any help or idea's appreciated!
Verizon told me yesterday the data issue sounded like either my VZ Navigator or Social Beat. I believe I signed into Social Beat one time but if I go to "Social Beat" it will say "no account" listed by all three icons.

It sounds to me like someone put spyware on your phone. Maybe you have a crazy ex or your bf doesn't trust you. idk but that's what it seems like to me. Does your phone ever just light up when it's just sitting there and nobody is touching it.

  • Sudden increase of data usage with my jetpack.

This is crazy!  For the first few months using my jetpack, my usage was consistent with my usage when I was with Sprint.  I monitor my usage on a regular basis.  So you can image my surprise when I received two text messages in the middle of the night, 15 minutes apart telling me I was at 75% and the 90% of my 14 gig limit, just 17 days into my billing cycle.  We had used just over 4 gig to this point, an average month.  I contacted Verizon immediately.  I was told that Verizon was having technical difficulties but she still put me through to a tech support person.  The Tech gave me a song and dance about my data usage that did not match up with my data usage that was being reported on My Verizon, so I pushed the issue and called back.  The customer service rep started an investigation on my behalf.  When she called me several days later, I was informed that the usage was legit and it was my fault because I had left my jetpack on even when we were not using the internet and there must have been updates occurring.  I was also told that nothing could be done until my next bill was issued.  We run Linux and do not run ANY automatic updates.  After turning off my jetpack for several days, my daughter turned it on for less than 30 minutes to check her email and blogs for her college class.  It used in excess of .5 gig during this time.  I will be taking my jetpack into the closest Verizon store to get checked out.  If this is not resolved to my satisfaction, I will be eating the early cancelation charge and dropping Verizon.  I would rather pay a little more through an internet satellite provider than be duped by a company unwilling to fix an obvious problem.

I can see by the posts on this site there are no solutions to an obvious problem with the Verizon Jetpack. My data usage says I have used over 15GBs! in a few hour period and I was only on the internet for about and hour and just the usual checking my email, bank statement, Facebook. My jetpack worked fine up until a two and a half months ago  I have contacted Verizon a month ago about excessive data usage reporting. So far this month it says I have over 15G used! No way could it be. My browsing hasn't changed. My computer hasn't changed. I have not downloaded any music or movies for months and I shut off the automatic run on videos on Facebook. I've lived in the same house for 35 years. I shut my jetpack off when I'm done .. If I turn on the Jetpack. and check email and do some browsing,,.within half a day to a day I get a notice that says I've used almost 2 more GB of data!! This is insane. I haven't watched anything on Netflix since last April or May and even then I didn't have any overages. This is a new problem. I took my Jetpack in to our local Verizon Store and all he could do was confirm the data usage. The lady from online support who chatted with me last month said she would back charge to the cheaper plan for a month and then drop it the next month, but now my account shows I'm on a 14 GB plan (use to be 10 then she put it at 12 supposedly for one month..so don't know how in the heck it's now at 14) and it is saying I'm over my data usage. Right now I'm using my phone hotspot. I do not have overages being reported when I use this connection. I also have used my daughters hotspot and NO problem. Face it , to whatever Verizon Tech may be reading this... The problem is there's a bug with the Jetpack 4g or a problem with it's data reporting. I don't believe a large corporation would try to dishonestly upcharge data. I used the old Jetpack in 2011 and 2012 and NEVER had an overage problem. I updated to this new one last November and didn't have a problem until about 2 months ago. I'm an older senior and this is a big problem on a fixed income. My internet usage is about the same as it's been for the past decade. That's why I called Verizon about this problem. I thought maybe the account had been hacked somehow and someone was piggy backing on my device but with the postings on this site and others I see it's a Verizon Jetpack problem! NO ONE wants to Help. The replies I get from Verizon is " Well, this is what the data report says, so you must be using it somehow, with updates or background programs etc. " When NOTHING has changed on my end and it doesn't happen on other WiFi equipment it's obvious this is a Verizon Jetpack problem.. I am just not going to use my Jetpack anymore and believe when I say it will NOT be recommended to anyone we know, not that that will make a dent in anyones life at Verizon, and I use to think it was really a great tool for traveling etc. My husband and I do have the contract with Verizon and will run it out but this has been a really bad experience. BTW..I only hook this up to our computer at home or when we use the tablet up at our cabin,.so only one device at a time and no big downloads.

  • IPhone 4s iOs 6 data usage problems on Verizon

Last night around 6PM I lifted the usage controls on my teenage cousin's iphone 4s. We had never set a data limit for the phone because she only uses it for internet when at home on the wifi network. We only had it on her phone to be able to block unwanted numbers, but the feature also allows customers to set data caps, internet restrictions by age ect.
Prior to last night her usuage was minimal. However, within 6 hrs of the usuage control being lifted suddenly I was notified we'd hit 50% of our 6g data plan. In the morning when I woke up I had a text saying we'd hit 75% of our usage plan. I logged into Verizon and it indicated she had consumed 4.6g.
I spoke with Verizon and the first reprepresenative told me that this was a known iOs 6 issue for iphones and asked me to check if the phone was using the that operating system. She said if it was Verizon would be giving credits to customers because it was a known issue. I hung up, called my aunt and learned that in fact iOs 6 was installed. She also confirmed that the phone settings had not changed. It was still only using wifi. Verizon data usage remained turned off.
I called Verizon back and spoke with a second representative who then told me that it was not an iOs 6 issue, but just an iPhone 5 issue. She said the previous information given to me was incorrect; it was hardware and not operating system based problem. I then reapplied usage controls and went in to set a data limit, for the first time, and discovered that the iPhone's data usage had now reached 5.4g of 6g. I still have 18 days left on my billing cycle and just .6g of data remaining. It seems crazy to me that I should have to set a cap on data usage for a phone using wifi to prevent that phone from maxing out verizon data, but that is what I have done until I can get to the bottom of this
The rep told me to visit Apple for further details. I also googled it and found stories on CNN and TheNextWeb reporting instances where individuals with the iOs 6 on iphone 4s were also experiencing problems, but nothing concrete on how to resolve it.
Can someone please clarify for me what is going on or where I can find a solution to this.
    Thank you in advance.

The second rep is a moron. Yes it is a software issue and not just an iphone 5 one.
Something you didn't mention is what carrier software version is on the iphone. Verizon sent out a settings update around Oct 5th because of this issue. I believe you should be on 13.1. it's definitely something.1
I've heard talk if you go Settings-General-About it will OTA load the update but I'm not certain about this. Frankly I would wipe the phone and set it up new. During the restore iTunes should check that the software is up to date and find the carrier updates. Make sure your cousin has all her photos, contacts etc. And warn her that she'll lose her texts. Although I have heard if you google around someone figured out how to erase everything but backups from an iTunes backup file. That was for iOS 5 as I recall but it might still work. So have her do a backup in iTunes, duplicate it and play if you feel techie enough.

  • IOS 8 High Cellular Data Usage

Upgraded my wife's iPhone 5 32GB to IOS 8 yesterday. About an hour after I upgraded she got an SMS from her provider saying she only had 100MB left of her data package. About a minute later she got another SMS to say it ran out. I reset Cellular Usage Statistics and bought another 250MB data bundle.
About 2 hours later she got another SMS saying she had again used up all data and that out of bundle rates apply, when I checked Data Usage it had used 297MB. She did not use the phone at all during this time.
I have disabled everything under Use Cellular Data For: long ago, except Contacts, Find iPhone, Maps, IMDB, Mail, Settings, Weather and WhatsApp.
None of these Apps had excessive usage under them, some a few KB. System Services had used 404KB.
    Personal Hotspot was Off.
Everything in iCloud except for Find My iPhone is off. iCloud is signed in.
Use Cellular Data is off under iTunes & App Store
I have gone through all the Apps at the bottom of Settings and none of them have Cellular Data active.
iTunes Radio under Music is not set to use Cellular.
Is there anywhere else I can check what would be using so much data, have turned Cellular Data off for now?
I am at a loss, I upgraded my iPhone 5 16GB the same way as my wife's and I have not used any extra data, sitting at 247MB since September 1st.
My wife's phone has not changed since before the upgrade, so all settings were the same and it has never used this much data.
    Any help would be appreciated.

After upgrading to the new IOS8, I noticed that my data plan just skyrocketed, and started getting those annoying text messages from AT&T about how I was eating the data like crazy, it went from 600MB to 900MB like in 15 minutes, and of course that I was getting charge $20 for it. After my second attempt trying to get an answer from AT&T I was told that the new IOS8 will open the gates to all your data (GPS, service location, etc) and received some tips on how to prevent that, try these options, I just did it myself, but not been able to pinpoint if this will stop, anyway I thought to share this info:
    1) Settings>General>iCloud>Documents & Data... Scroll down and have the customer turn off Use¿Cellular Data
    2) Settings>iTunes & App Store> Scroll down to AUTOMATIC DOWNLOADS and have the customer turn off MUSIC, APPS, UPDATES
    3) Settings>General>Background App Refresh (turn off any apps that the customer doesn't want to automatically refresh with their information)
    4) Settings>Privacy>Location Services (the customer will see all the apps that have the GPS enabled(Everything should be turned off except Setting Time Zone)
    I hope this helps
    Good luck

  • Who's tracking the trackers with data usage?

Hello - I was just wondering if there was a type of software or service that could be installed on your devise that accurately tracks data usage? With all the posts about overuse charges, and unexpected crazy bills if there was a way to verify the usage outside of any tools that verizon provides and being forced to take their word for it.

Android phones running ICS or JB have this capability built in; there also are apps in Google Play for Androids (such as Onavo Count).
My experience is that my phone and my installed Onavo Count track quite well with what's reported on my MyVerizon account's data usage.
Onavo Count is available for iPhones, and Windows Phones have Data Sense to track data usage.

  • What causes cellular data usage to decrease if last reset has not changed? I reset every pay period cuz I do not have unlimited and was showing 125 mb sent/1.2g received. Now showing 98mb sent/980mb received. Last reset still shows same

I reset my cellular data usage every month at the beginning of my billing period so that I can keep track of how much data I am using thru out the month. I do not have the unlimited data plan and have gone over a few times. It's usually the last couple days of my billing cycle and I am charged $10 for an extra gig which I barely use 10% of before my usage is restarted for new billing cycle. FYI, they do not carry the remainder of the unused gig that you purchase for $10 which I disagree with. But have accepted. Lol  Moving on.
I have two questions. One possibly being answered by the other. 1. Is cellular data used when I sync to iTunes on my home computer to load songs onto my iPhone from my iTunes library(songs that already exist)? 2. What causes the cellular data usage readings in iPhone settings/general/usage/cellular usage to decrease if my last reset has not changed? It is close to end of my billing cycle and I have been keeping close eye. Earlier today it read around 180mb sent/1.2gb received. Now it reads 90mb sent/980 mb recieved. My last reset date reads the same as before. I don't know if my sync and music management had anything to do with the decrease but i didn't notice the decrease until after I had connected to iTunes and loaded music. I should also mention that a 700mb app automatically loaded itself to my phone during the sync process. Is cellular data used at all during any kind of sync /iPhone/iTunes management? Is the cellular data usage reading under iPhone settings a reliable source to keep track of monthly data usage? Guess turned out to be more than two questions but all related. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer me. It is information I find valuable. Sorry for the book long question.

Is cellular data used at all during any kind of sync /iPhone/iTunes management? Is the cellular data usage reading under iPhone settings a reliable source to keep track of monthly data usage?
    1) No.
    2) It does provide an estimated usage, but it's not accurate. For accurate determination, you should check the remaining/used MBs from the carrier (most of the carriers provide this service for free).

  • Why do I have mysterious cellular data usage (Verizon) every 6 hours on all 3 of my iphone 5's?

I have recently uncovered mysterious cellular usage on three different iPhones. I am a Verizon customer and discovered this by examining the cellular data use logs. What I found are a long series of mysterious data usage logs. I have visited the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store 3 times now to log notes and discuss the issue. It is being escalated.
    The characterstics are as follows:
All my family phones have the appropriate IOS and hardware updates (verified by the GeniusBar at my local Apple Store).
This is occuring across three phones, which happen to all be iphone 5. Two are 5 and the other a new 5s. We do have one iphone 4 in the family but the issue (so far as I can tell), is not happening on it.
One iphone 5 has IOS 7, the other IOS 6. The new 5s has of course IOS 7.
Mysterious data use happens even while connected to wifi.
Each mysterious data use log entry is exactly 6 hours apart. For example: 2:18 AM, 8:18 AM, 2:18 PM, 8:18 PM, 2:18 AM ... etc. It cycles AM and PM, same times, for a day to many days until some condition causes it to change (evolve).
The times evolve. One day it could be cycling through at one time series, then it changes to another time sequence and continues until the next condition.
The data usage is anywhere from a few K to many MB. The largest I've seen is over 100 MB.
The logs clearly show these usages are not due to human interaction. It is a program.
If cellular connection is used frequently (by the owner), the pattern is hard to pick out. Luckily, my family member is very good about only using wifi whenever possible, so these mysterious use patterns are easy to pick out.
Verizon allows access to 90 days worth of data logs, so I downloaded and analyzed them. This has been happening for at least 90 days. I have found 298 instances of mysterious use out of 500 total connections to cellular. A total of 3.5 GB of mysterious cellular data has been recorded as used in that 90 days by this phone alone. Only .6 GB of the total cellular data use is legitimate, meaning by the person.
This issue is occuring across three different phones. Two are iPhone 5, and the third is a recently purchased iPhone 5s. The 5s I have not touched beyone the basic startup. I have left it alone on a desk for 3 days, and looking at the logs, the mysterious data use in the same pattern is occuring.
So ... I am speaking to both sides, Verizon and Apple to get answers. Verizon puts their wall up at data usage. It doesn't matter how it is being used, you simply need to pay for it. Yes, the evidence I have gathered is getting closer to someting on Verizon's end.
Before pressing in that direction, I am hoping someone reading this may recognize this issue as a possible iPhone 5 issue ... OR ... you, right now, go look at your data usage logs available through your carrier's web account, and see if you can pick out a pattern of mysterious use. Look especially at the early morning instances when you are most likely sleeping.
I am hoping this is a simple issue that has a quick resolution. I'm looking for the "ooohhh, I see that now ..." But I am starting to think this might be much bigger, but the fact is, most customers rarely or never look at their data usage details, much less discover mysterious use patterns.
The final interesting (maybe frightening part) thing about all this is that I discovered while talking to Verizon ... they do not divulge which direction the data is going. This goes for any use, mysterious or legitimate. Is cellular data coming to your phone, or leaving it? Is something pulling data from your phone? We know that it is possible to build malware apps, but the catch with my issue is that it is also happening on a brand new iphone 5s with nothing downloaded to it.
    Thanks for your time

Thanks for the replies. It took a while not hearing anything so thought I was alone. I have done many of the suggestions already. The key here is that it occurs on both phones with apps, and phones still packaged in a box.
A Genius Bar supervisor also checked his Verizon data usage log and found the same 6 hour incremental use. Suprisingly, he did not express much intrigue over that. Maybe he did, but did not show it.
I think the 6 hour incremental usage is the main issue here. I spoke with Verizon (again) and they confirmed that all they do is log exactly when the phone connected to the tower and used data. The time it records is when the usage started. I also found out that the time recorded is GMT.
What is using data, unsolicited, every 6 hours?
    Why does it change?
Why does it only happen on the iPhone 5 series and not the 4?
Since no one from Apple seems to be chiming in on this, and I have not received the promised calls from Apple tech support that the Genius Bar staff said I was suppose to receive, it is starting to feel like something is being swept under the rug.
I woke up the other day with another thought ... What application would use such large amounts of data? Well ... music, video, sound and pictures of course. Well ... what would someone set automatically that is of any use to them? hmmm ... video, pictures, sound. Is the iPhone 5 succeptible to snooping? Can an app be buried in the IOS that automatically turns on video and sound recording, and send it somewhere ... every 6 hours? Chilling. I noted that the smallest data usage is during the night when nothing is going on, then it peaks during the day. The Genius Bar tech and I looked at each other when I drew this sine wave graph on the log print outs during an appointment ...

  • ICloud sync and data usage

After upgrading my ATT iPhone 4 to iOS5, I thought I would try out iCloud. I read somewhere, that it only syncs when it is connected to a powersource, and maybe I read that wrong, but I interpret it to mean when I am connected to either a power outlet or my computer using the cable. In otherwords, it wouldn't sync while I was out and about, away from my wireless home network, using the 3G network.
    Is this not correct?
Because 2 days ago I racked up 80 MB of my data plan (not iCloud storage) while I slept at home, where I have a wireless network. I found this out by getting a text warning from ATT the next day, that I was close to using up my alloted 200MB data usage. I checked out my account online, and sure enough the 80MB transferred in the middle of the night. I didn't notice the "documents and data" setting was turned on so it looks like my apps updated while my phone was in sleep mode. Is there anything else it could be? I have everything iCloud turned off now and wondering if there is something I should know about to avoid wasting my data usage?

I think possibly you are thinking about wireless sync of iTunes. That can be set to happen when you connect to a charger etc, but that is not the same thing as you are descrbing with iCloud.

  • Unexplained Verizon Data Usage on Iphone 5s

I have data usage charges showing up on my Iphone 5s every day at 5:40am Eastern time.  The problem is that my phone is not being used at that time of day and is always connected to WiFi while I am home.  The data usage has been very large, from 60mb all the way up to 100mb.  I see that others have posted similar concerns so I'm throwing my voice in here saying that this is not our imagination, it is happening and killing out data usage.
Here is a screen grab of my data usage.  As you can see, every day at 5:40am, there is a large spike in usage.  My phone is not in use at that time:
There must be an explanation and resolution for this.

        Hi KingPumpkin,
We always want your charges to be accurate! Smartphones are now able to tell you what applications are using your data. Please go to cellular>use cellualr data for>and this list tells you what data was billed to your cellular data. You could screen shot this list when your done using the phone in the evening. Then compare the screenshot in the morning to see what application data has changed. Data overages can sometime be billed in delay. Your device is set to pick up the strongest signal on the device, so if the Wi-fi server is weak or reboots at 5:40am every morning, then the device will quickly switch to back the Verizon Wireless network until the Wi-fi server comes back up. You could also eliminate these charges by turning off the cellular data every night since the device is connected to Wi-fi.
    Thanks,

  • My iPhone 5s has no visual voicemail or regular voicemail and data usage is off the charts....

Okay so problem number 1 with my new iPhone 5s is data usage has spiked tremendously. I don't know why this is as for the last 2 years I have had an iPhone 4 and barely ever used 1GB a month. Now with my 2GB allowance I reached 90% used midway through the month. I have turned off the LTE and now have turned off cellular data completely and am only using wifi. I don't understand why my data usage has been so high this month since I am using my phone the same way. Is it the LTE?
My second problem is my phone has no voicemail. It tells me visual voicemail is unavailable and to call my voicemail. Except when I call my voicemail it asks me for a password. I have had my phone number for over 5 years and never had a password and now I can't get into my voicemail. I tried resetting the Network settings, that did not work. I have left my self voicemails and no notification even shows up. I called *86 to create a voicemail and it asks for a password which I never made.
I am EXTREMELY angry with Verizon's service at this point. I can not use my data until next month, and now I can't even receive voicemail messages. If someone could please tell me what is going on I would be appreciative.

To answer your first question, the answer is yes, it is the LTE. Your iPhone 4 could only connect to 3G and so therefore unable to transfer data as quickly as 4G on the 5s. So then you end up using more data than you have before.
And your second question. I am not sure as to why it's asking for a password if it never was before. You can reset your voicemail password if you log into your MyVerizon account. Hope that helps

  • Mysterious Data Usage

    Hello,
My wife owns an HTC Thunderbolt.  We are experiencing mysterious data usage.
The data log shows data usage during hours and at times when the phone is not being used.  We have tried closing all apps and resetting the phone.
Still, these nickel and dime data used entries are adding up fast and bring us to the brink of our our plan which we have already extended.
We do not stream video, we do not listen to Pandora.... The phone is used strictly for texts, emails, and phone calls.
Any advice?  Thank you for your help.

Same here - very similar.Times are close but not like yours.
I've deleted the email accounts and re-added them to see if there was a looping email send issue that I've read about.
Funny though, when I review the data use on the phone, "photo" is the app indicating using the most data. So I've turned off and uninstalled everything I can think is tied to that.

  • Question regarding roaming and data usage

I am currently out of my main country of service, and as such I have a question regarding roaming and data usage.
I am told that the airplane mode is sufficient from keeping the phone off from roaming, but does this apply to any background data usage for applications and such?
If the phone is in airplane mode, are all use of the phone including wifi and application use through the wifi outside of all extra charges from roaming?

If you are getting charged to use the wifi, then it is possible.  Otherwise no
Just to elaborate here, Ann154 is referring to access charges for wifi, which is nothing to do with Verizon, so if you are using it in a plane, hotel, an internet cafe etc that charges for Wifi rather than being free .   Verizon does not charge you (or indeed know about!) wifi usage, or any other usage that is not on their cellular network (such as using a foreign SIM for example in global phones)  So these charges, if any, will not show up on the verizon bill app.  Having it in airplane mode prevents all cellular data traffic so you should be fine
