Create 3d cel animation look after effects

Im trying to achieve this look for a project I am working on. (Link below), The artist said that they only used after effects for all the cube animations, and was wondering if anybody new a tutorial or guide that would help with best way to acieve this. Im assuming its all shape layers, but would love any feedback, Thanks!

There was a recent thread on this exact subject.
Illusion of Life animation - How?
There's no secret, no plug-in, just a lot of time practicing your technique and using the distortion tools available in AE. FYI... In my response I included a project that shows how to do some of the techniques.

  • Animating in After Effects with video footage

When animating in After Effects, instead of using a solid background, can I use a video as the background and have it playing while the character is moving? I can't see why it wouldn't work. I've saw people question about animating in Flash ect and bringing it in, but I need to animate within AF. Hope someone can help me out!

    Hi Claudia.
Are you using "AF" to stand for "Adobe Flash" Or "AFter effects"?
If you are trying to composite character animation over a background in After Effects, yes, it is a fantastic application for it.
You can create many types of backdrops easily (and very easy to modify elements back/forth from Photoshop)
As for character animation, there are multiple standard tools within After Effects.  There are also third party plugins that may help you.
One plugin that I like to use for character animation is DUIK. DuDuF R&D » Duik – DuDuF IK Tools
    (free)
Another plugin that is excellent is Mettle Freeform http://www.mettle.com/tutorials-digieffects-freeform-freeform-v2/

  • Exporting a cinema 4d animation in after effects

    Hi ,
I just want to find out if the following method to export a video animation in after effects that also includes a cinema 4d animation is correct because it doesn't seem to be working.
I basically hit export in after effects >> add to adobe media encoder >> it opens i then select my format and it doesn't seem to work no errors just stops.
Am i going about this incorrectly?
The animation is a basic spin of a character.. Nothing hectic
    Thanks

There is a bug that causes a problem with exporting a composition that uses a .c4d scene object through Adobe Media Encoder. We intend to release a fix for this bug very soon (probably next week). In the meantime, you should export a losslessly encoded master movie file from After Effects and use Adobe Media Encoder to transcode that file to your final delivery format.

  • How to Take High Quality GIF Animation In After Effects? Could You Tell Me If You Know

Some People Posting (In Behance) High Quality GIF Motion Graphics. How They Did?

No such thing as a high quality animated gif if high quality means more than 256 colors and anti aliasing.
If you want to create a better looking animated gif in After Effects then you render a lossless movie from your composition and then use Photoshop or another app to turn the movie into an animated gif.
If you want to import an animated gif into AE then what you see is all there is. Gif's cannot contain more than 256 colors and anti aliasing is terrible to non existent.

  • CREATING A RECEDING RECTANGLE IN AFTER EFFECTS

My apologies, but I'm kind of a left brained guy and sometimes it's hard to wrap my mind around right brain spatial problems that others find laughably easy.
I'm interested in creating this simple box with four walls through which one could view a video at the far end.  I don't need all the little videos on the side, I am just unsure how to create that simple box.
Would I extrude that in 3d somehow?  Can I construct it all at once rather than aligning one wall at a time?  I'm not too good with parallax and vanishing points yet.
What basic workflows do I need to master to create this simple box in 3D?
Thanks so much!  Rocket science to me right now.
Here is the underlying video from which it was derived; it was constructed in another program, but I'm certain this is very straightforward in AE.

Position the anchor points is purely mathematical. Think of a cube with all of the anchor points for each layer exactly in the center of the cube. If the sides were 400 pixels by 400 pixels then 1/2 of the width or height would be 200. Offset the anchor point by 200 pixels in Z and you've moved all of the layers back by 1/2 the width of the layer. Since rotation always happens around the anchor point when you rotate the in increments of 90º they will always end up with aligned edges.
Now to the problem of your edge seams. First of all, work with even pixel values for the size of your layers. 200 X 200 works, 205 X 205 or 300 X 145 won't work as well. This is because AE does sub pixel positioning and the edges at half pixel values will be interpreted with different values than edges at whole pixel values.
The second problem is that any time there's any angle to a line or edge the edge must be interpreted to fix aliasing (jaggy edges) that are caused when you try to draw a diagonal line on a checkerboard. It is called anti-aliasing. This gives you different pixel values at the edge with the image is at an angle. After Effects makes it's transparency calculations using straight alphas. In most cases this is by far the best option. When it comes to matching up edges of these 3D planes it isn't the best. It would be better to add the alpha values together rather than use a straight calculation which combines the values.
Fortunately AE has a blend mode called Alpha Add. It only effects the alpha channels are calculated.  Changing the blend mode to Alpha Add eliminates the problem until you start adding lights to your scene.
As soon as you start adding lights to the scene you run into additional problems calculating alpha edge values. There are some workarounds to eliminate light leaks in these situations that involve scaling the layers slightly that are nearest the camera so that the problem is hidden. In spite of what your wife says trying to be perfect in every frame isn't a very good way to make a living in the visual effects business. You have to be able to make your scene look right with the least amount of effort so you can move on the the next of the thousands of frames it takes to complete a project. That is the biggest challenge faced by anyone working with AE.
Unfortunately, unless you use ray traced rendering to extrude a box in AE you cannot fix the problem completely, but by carefully designing your animation to hide these problems you can make things look perfect without being so. Take these two cubes with a point light set in the center. The one on the left is perfect but looks wrong, the one on the left has the back left wall moved 1 pixel to the right and the right front wall is scaled 101% in X to hide the seams. If I needed to spin the cube and add motion blur I would need to pre-compose the spinning cube and add CC Force Motion blur to the scene to hide the seams. It's prety easy to see which version of the spinning cube works better.
I hope this long winded explanation helps. Take a look at his image. It shows two solids separated by 2 pixels in the center. The Alpha levels of the pixels that are going to match up are shown. The panel on the left shows the edges matching with the blend mode set to Alpha Add. The image on the right shows the blend mode set to normal. The differing shades of blue are caused by combining rather than adding the alpha values of those pixels.

  • "Unable to create font" error when starting After Effects CS4 (Windows Vista)

    Hi all
I have read a hundred posts about the "unable to create font" message that appears when running After Effects in both CS4 and CS5 versions.
On MAC, it seems that installing the Verdana fonts family is enough.
On my PC running Windows Vista, i tried unsuccessfully :
    - uninstalled and reinstalled After Effects
    - installed all the fonts of the Adobe Font Folio v11
    - looked for the "AdobeFnt.lst" to delete it, found no such file in my whole hard drive
    - changed my system language to English (USA)
    Other CS4 softwares work.
    What can i do?

See this page for some additional information about this error.
    > I forgot to mention that i also installed the 9.0.2 update. Didn't work either!
You should also install the After Effects CS4 (9.0.3) update.

  • Width animation in After Effects

I already revealed my logo with a mask. The mask is with a line.
So as the line (it's just a thin rectangle) goes to the right, it reveals the text.
Next I want the line to grow thicker into a box.
Except after I add the keyframe, I change the width of the line and the Rectangle goes all the way to the left off the screen. Or I try to change the width and it doesn't change it for that key frame but throught out the animation like with the mask.
I don't get how this works, How can I animate it so that it won't move so wildly? All I want is to animate the thin rectangle to grow wider to the right side. Help? Adobe after effects Creative Cloud I'm using.

Well, by using the right tools and methodology. It's as simple as that. You are too bound trying to do everything on a single layer with a single mask, which rarely ever works. Also masks have this odd thing with mask interpolation, which might well explain your difficulties. To reveal your layer, one would simply use a linear wipe or another layer as a matte, which by all means could be an animated shape layer. therein also lies the answer to yopur otehr problem: Simply animate the properties of a parametric shape layer rectangle. Much more controllable.
    Mylenium
Well, yeah, that's the problem. I"m okay with the linear wipe mask revealing the text, I feel I've done that fine, it's just the animation of the rectangle now.

  • How to create editable .mov files from After Effects

    Hi,
I am creating videos for my clients using after effects.
The requirment is that they should be able to edit the .mov files e.g adding their company name, text or logo without using after effects without losing any effects.
    How can I accomplish this?
    Thanks....

Editing video is not possible with Photoshop Elements.
Photoshop Elements is for photo editing
In order to edit videos , you should use Premiere Elements or Premiere Pro
However, Adobe does offer a combined package of Photoshop Elements and Adobe Premiere Elements, which might work perfectly for someone who just needs the most basic tools for editing both photos and video.

  • Exporting Motion Graphics and animation from After Effects CS5

I find that exporting from After Effects is problematic when using a ramp or working with anything that has a gradient of some kind. Always banding and artifacts.
Any insight into how to achieve good result with projects such as this?
    Thx in advance.

I find that exporting from After Effects is problematic when using a ramp or working with anything that has a gradient of some kind.
...then don't! Sorry, but this is the same old thing: Simple computational math dictates that between points A and B only so many discrete color levels can exist in 8bit color and that any distance beyond 1024 pixels will result in duplicate pixels of the same colors to be adjacent, commonly referred to as banding. Or in other words: You are looking to fix a thing that can't really be fixed, even more so when compression reduces the available color range further. Yes, you can use all sorts of tricks like adding noise or adjusting gamma to minimize this, but it will never go away. The ugly harsh truth is, that it all starts with a flawed design approach and any of that is merely trying to fix things at the wrong and. As I said in my initial sentence, don't use gradients that cover such large distances along just one axis or uniformely colored areas. Ad structure by adding more gradients perpendicular/ at an angle to the main gradient, use subtle color variations, add vignetting or generally use "busy" designs that have more elements or textures that would allow to forego large uniform areas....

  • Creating Heat Waves-Premiere or After Effects? And How if Premiere?

I have a foreground statue still image composited against the live action of a freeway overpass. Around the lower part of the concrete freeway are heat waves. My composited foreground statue image doesn't look like it fits in as well with the freeway when the video plays because it lacks the distortion of the heat waves.
The distort effects in Premiere, so far, aren't holding any great promise. Does AE have heat wave like effects?
This has GOT to be something encountered in movies all the time.

Thanks, Colin. That works. I was initially working with Wave Warp, then as I changed the settings it went from okay to horrible and even going back to the settings that looked okay it still looked bad. After you posted I gave it a second look. It was a matter of clearing the effect, re-applying it, and then re-tweaking.
    I'll have 3 layers.
#1.  The effect layer:   with warp effect and alpha channel masked to specific heat wave area. This layer is also roughly 20% opaque.
#2. The whole statue layer:  unaltered
    #3. The video background.
I will experiment with the linear wipe wipe as well but this is looking pretty good. Thanks.

  • How can I create a Wall Street looking wrap effect?

I want to create a line of text and then have it wrap around on my screen. As soon as the last letter is viewable I want it to loop. I'm looking to get the effect of the text that scoots along the bottom of the screen on Wall Street.
    Thanks!

30 minutes is too much render time in LiveType.
I would suggest typing the text you want and then put a space at the end of your line(s)
Then copy the that line(s) including the space and paste it dozens of times.
With the text track selected click the Timing Tab in the Inspector and change the duration to 60 seconds
Then Go to the Effects Tab in the Media Browser, and in the Category box select the "Scrolls and Crawls", highlight the "Crawl Left" and click Apply
With the Effects track highlighted, select the Timing Tab in the Inspector and increase the loops to 12
Set your end point for 60 seconds
Save it or render it as a movie then bring the file into FCP, place it on a video track, copy and paste it 30 times
    Voila a 30 minute lower 3rd crawl.

  • How can I colour pop a moving object in a stop-frame animation in After Effects CS6 (Creative Cloud)

    Hi,
The title pretty much explains what I want to achieve.
I have a black and white video and I want to colour pop a moving object in it with it's original colours.
I'm a full member of the Creative Cloud and so have all the suite available to me.
    How can I do this?
    Thanks.
    Neil

    Wow!!
    Thankyou for that.
I'm a video/AE newbie and found a great tutorial video.
    Many thanks.

  • (Urgent) Stop Motion Animation in After Effects?

THIS IS URGENT I need to make a stop motion out of a series of pictures that i took but i need a simple way to do it instead of having to individually drag and edit the shots. Is there anyway you can import a serise of shots as a sequence or something? Or is there another Adobe Software that is good for stop motion? THANKS

Are you asking about importing a series of still images as a still-image sequence?

  • Swf issue in after effects

    Hi all,
I've created an swf animation in after effects to have on the intro site of a webpage.
Basically part of the animation consists of some PNG files of text. I've placed it in after affects and have set it so that it moves across the screen over a short time.
It plays fine in after effects but when I export it to swf and play it in my browser the text flickers a bit.
In the animation there's also a movie file which I have animated and that plays fine?
Please can someone advise me on what to do, I need to get this sorted tonight!
    Thanks!
P.s. also would it be better to try and make it in flash pro? I havent used it before ajnd if its better will i pick it up quickly? This is sooo urgent I'd really appreciate a response tonight!

would it be better to try and make it in flash pro? With no doubts will i pick it up quickly? If you need just to move your text, which is a PNG file(s), it takes for about a couple of minutes to place it on a stage and arrange to taste. Basic principles are exactly the same: stage, objects, motion path...
