Create a customized bootable ISO to install Server 2012 on a physical or VMware server

Management would like us to create a pre-customized bootable 2012 ISO image.  I'm using previously created work instructions on how to create a 2008 R2 image which is used to boot on a physical server and also used to deploy VMware servers.  We
install some applications that we use in our standard builds and create the ISO.
So for a 2008 image we customize the 2008 server build using using a pre-created Autounattend file.
We install all the applicaitons, remove guids and use a customized unattend to sysprep (/oobe /generalize)
We use a pre-prepared Pre Sysprep PE disk to create the Wim file.
We use DISM to mount the WIM and add drivers.
We use imagex to split the wim file into sim files if the wim file is more than 4GB
We use a pre-prepared Post Sysprep ISO to add the wim or sim files to create the ISO.
Now with the requirement for deploying 2012 we have been asked to duplicate the same process.  I'd prefer to use a VMware image, clone or template so we don't have to start the build process all over each quarter as we need to update this image quarterly.
We would use the VM template for VM's (and that's been the easy part).  But I'm not sure of all that is required for the physical image ISO.  I want to completely remove the physical server out of the picture except for the deployment option
to a physical server.  In other words create the wim file from the customized 2012 VM server.
I know we have to get the unattend files from AIK 8 or 8.1 and I think we need to use AIK to get a Pre Sysprep PE and Post Sysprep ISO but an not completely clear how to do this.
Can someone steer me in the right direction or provide any tips or gatcha's?
Thanks!

Hi MHDay,
1.Install the Deployment Tools feature included in the
Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit for Windows 8. 2.Extract your Windows 8 ISO
3. Launch the Windows System Image Manager
4.Under Windows Image right click and select a windows image, navigate to the sources\install.wim file from your extracted ISO or your DVD
5.It will ask you about creating a catalog of the image, say yes
6.Once that is done, under Answer File right click and select new answer file
7.Drag Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup_neutral to the "4 specialize" section
    a. Enter your product key
8. Drag Microsoft-Windows-International-Core_neutral to "7 oobeSystem"
    a. Set InputLocale to 0409:00000409
b.SystemLocal, UILanguage, and UserLocal all to en-US
9. Drag Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup_neutral to "7 oobeSystem"
    a. In order to make the installation completely silent and not need any user interaction, under OOBE set each of the following to true: HideEULAPage, HideLocalAccountScreen, HideOEMRegistrationScreen, HideOnlineAccountScreen, HideWirelessSetupInOOBE
    b. Set NetworkLocation to Work
    c. Set ProtectYourPC to 1 (This enables windows update with recommended settings)
10. If you do not specify a local account in the answer file you will be forced to create one during image deployment, so be sure to create a new Local Account under UserAccounts -> LocalAccounts
    a. I have found that you can create a new account that is the same name as one that is already in the image for simplicity
11. If you need to join to a domain, drag Microsoft-Windows-UnattendedJoin_Neutral to "4 specialize"
    a. Set your domain name in JoinDomain, set UnsecureJoin to false
    b. Enter credentials with domain join privileges -- **They WILL be stored in plain text in the file
Save your unattend.xml file. At this point if you are using WDS you can select the image in the WDS console and attach the unattend.xml file to that image.
If you want to slip the unattend.xml file in to the image itself, copy it to c:\windows\system32\sysprep, and run sysprep like this: sysprep /generalize /oobe /shutdown /unattend:c:\windows\system32\sysprep\unattend.xml
For details please refer to
here.
Then you may follow your steps to create ISO file .

  • Is it possible to create a two node cluster with SQL server 2012 STD on node1 and SQL Server 2008 ENT on node2 on a Windows server 2012?

    Hi All,
Is it possible to create a two node cluster with SQL server 2012 STD on node1 and SQL Server 2008 ENT on node2 on a Windows server 2012?
    aa

I think you are confused with the way cluster is installed. Installing SQL on cluster is a two step process. On first node you create a new SQL cluster and on second node you need "AddNode" action.
Same edition media has to be used in above two operation.
you can install two separate instances with one enterprise and one standard.

    Hi biionut,
Did you install SQL Server 2012 Replication Components on the IIS server?  The steps to install replication components are covered in
How to: Install SQL Server Replication Components.
Also, is your IIS server running 64-bit Windows?  If so you will need to allow 32-bit applications to run on the IIS server:
    cscript %SystemDrive%\inetpub\AdminScripts\adsutil.vbs set w3svc/AppPools/Enable32bitAppOnWin64 1

  • Sharepoint 2013 SSRS Interaction with Sql Server 2012 Reporting Services connecting to Sql Server 2008 R2 database

    Hi
I'm working on upgrading sharepoint 2010 to sharepoint 2013 with sql server 2008 r2. I've ran into some problems but have been able to get a test farm upgraded. However to run SSRS 2013 it seems Sql Server 2012 Reporting Services are required. Upgrading
to a full sql server 2012 database isn't an option. I know that sql server 2012 reporting services can use sql server 2008 r2 as a catalog and content database so I was wondering could this be a workaround? Importantly would I need a separate machine/virtual
machine to host sql server 2012 reporting services? or could it live on the sql server 2008 r2 machine? Any pointers appreciated. Thanks Dan

Remember that SSRS must be deployed on the SharePoint server. Having said that, yes you can install SSRS 2012 SP1 on a server running SQL 2008 R2. And yes, you can use 2008 R2 as your Database Engine server while SSRS 2012 SP1 runs on the SharePoint server.

  • Can we use SQL Server 2012 Web Edition as a witness server in mirroring?

    Hi All,
Can we use SQL Server 2012 Web Edition as a witness server in mirroring?
Grateful to your time and support. Regards, Shiva

    Hi All,
Can we use SQL Server 2012 Web Edition as a witness server in mirroring?
Grateful to your time and support. Regards, Shiva
    As Per BOL
We strongly recommend that the witness reside on a separate computer from the partners. Database mirroring partners are supported only by SQL Server 2005 Standard and later versions and by SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition and later versions.
Witnesses, in contrast, are also supported by SQL Server 2005 Workgroup and later versions and by SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and later versions. Except during an upgrade from an earlier version of SQL Server, the server instances in a
mirroring session must all be running the same version of SQL Server. For example, a SQL Server 2005 witness is supported when you are upgrading from a SQL Server 2005 mirroring configuration but cannot be added to an existing or new SQL Server 2008 or later
    mirroring configuration.
A witness can run on any reliable computer system that supports any of these editions of SQL Server. However, we recommend that every server instance that is used as a witness correspond to the minimum configuration that is required for the SQL Server Standard
version that you are running. For more information about these requirements

    Hi

  • Installing Windows Server 2012 in Order to Use SharePoint Server and Develop in VS2012

    Hi.
I need to install SharePoint Server so that I can work with SP Designer and have full options for development using VS2012.  Apparently, I also need to Install Windows Server 2012.  I would like to install and configure WS2012 in a virtual environment
using the Hyper-V tools that come with Windows 8 Pro.  I'm a newbie when it comes to WS2012, and want to make sure I don't end up reformatting my Windows 8 hard drive or causing a similar event that would put me in a rubber room.
I downloaded the WS2012 image file, but am unsure how to proceed.  Can anyone give me some help as to how to get started?
    Thanks.
    Bugless

    Hi,
If you have enabled the Hyper-V role on Windows 8 then you can create Windows Server 2012 VM's.  As Server 2012 has the Hyper-V tools build in by default there is no need to install them.
So enable the Hyper-V role on Windows, Create a new VM in Hyper-V management console and connect the cd/dvd drive in the VM properties to the Windows Server 2012 setup ISO file. Start the VM and the Server 2012 setup. (during creating a VM you can also
connect the cd/dvd drive to an ISO file)
You might want to give to the Server 2012 VM 2 vCPU's and 2GB+ memory for performance. Also have a look the memory specs for VS2012 to see how much memory you should give to the VM.

  • Server 2012 Hyper-V locks up Virtual Server for no reason.

Server 2012 Hyper-V locks up virtual servers for no reason.
This is a production server. I began building this server in February. I installed the server in November. 2012 server R1 is full of bugs!
First who was the rocket scientist that decided that the TURN OFF function in Hyper-V means "Please turn off when the
F*#@$*% you feel like it"? Idiots!
I have a Supermicro server with perfect memory (for those who want to blame this on memory).
It is running 12 Virtual Servers. Every morning, at a random time, at least 1 of the servers lock up solid. Sometimes as many as 5 decide that for no reason they all want to lock up. The servers that lock up may be 1 or more: a database server, a terminal
server, an exchange server, a Windows 8.1 Ent VDI server, an IIS server, and or AD server. All 2012 R1.
They are running all current Microsoft and other vendor patches and hardware updates.
The only common denominator is the Hyper-V server.
I cannot shut them down using the Hyper-V manager. I cannot turn them off. I have a hundred users standing by while I nicely ask them to turn off. The VM will turn off after 20 minutes and a lot of gentle coaxing.
I cannot Kill the vmwp.exe process associated with the locked Virtual Machine.
No .DMP are created. No events in the event viewers. No reason at all. When they restart, there is no indication of a problem.
I ran two VMWP dumps and posted it here.
    www.a1bcs.com/hyper-vlockup.zipx
Does anyone know why these are locking up?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Robert

I'm not positive of the cause but I was able to stop the problems.
It turned out that Network Load Balancing (NLB) between the two terminal servers and another between the two gateways was causing the lockups.
This is a normal configuration and it should work. Especially since Microsoft has seen fit to remove the DRAIN USERS function from RDP as well as the LOCK OUT till next reboot function. JUST FYI these functions are still available at a DOS prompt
by using the CHGLOGON command. But still the NLB also provides these functions.
Anyhow, once I removed the NLB I haven't had the lockups anymore.
That doesn't however change the fact that TURN OFF should mean TURN OFF not turn off please!
    Thanks again,
    Robert

  • Using Windows Server 2012 per-User RDS CAL on Server 2008 R2 Session Host

I have a Remote Desktop Licensing Server setup on my domain controller running Windows Server 2012 R2. I have installed a
’Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Services per-User CAL’ there and activated the licensing server already.
Currently I use ONLY Windows Server 2008 R2 machines as RDS Session Hosts (in the future I plan to transition them to 2012 R2, hence the CAL I bought is
    already in the newest version).
I have already configured my WS 2008 RDS Session Hosts: set
Per-User licensing mode and specified license server address. The connectivity between my Session Host(s) and my License Server seems to be ok as the
Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration window on the Session Host correctly lists the 2012 per-user
license (CAL installed on server) from the license server.
On the License Server I can also see event logs entries (in
Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-Licensing/Admin), indicating that the user has been issued a license.
The issue I am having is that the license being issued is
2008 Per User CAL license (Build-in OverUsed - temporary) and not the 2012 Per User CAL license which is the only license installed on the server. According to the RDS CAL interoperability matrix at
social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/14988.rds-and-ts-cal-interoperability-matrix.aspx, I was expecting the 2012 license to be backward-compatible with 2008 client (and that
in the absence of legacy licenses, the (only) 2012 license would be used for all clients connecting to the licensing server)
Before I bought my license, I found this document:
    download.microsoft.com/download/3/D/4/3D42BDC2-6725-4B29-B75A-A5B04179958B/WindowsServerRDS_VLBrief.pdf
which says that - "newer version RDS CALs can be used with an older version of the server software" (In section FAQ, Q4), which means to me that
the 2012 license would work as-is for the 2008 Server and gives me flexibility when upgrading to the new server version.
How can I make this CAL work in my environment?
    Note:
    I have already explicitly disabled
Prevent license upgrade Group Policy setting which I assumed would fix the issue but nothing has changed.
Then I have enabled License server security group Group Polity setting
and added computers from my domain to RDS Endpoint Servers AD group. I have also created new AD group called
Terminal Server Computers and added the computer accounts there, but it changes
    nothing. Reference - technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee791761.aspx , technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc725704.aspx and blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2009/09/17/control-the-issuance-of-rds-cals.aspx.
I found one potential ‘workaround’ which involved manually downgrading my CAL license by calling
Microsoft Clearinghouse. I am very reluctant do to so because, as I upgrade parts of my infrastructure to Server 2012, I’d need to then ask Microsoft to manually upgrade a part of my license back as well.
Am I missing something? What should I do to get my 2012 CAL to be issued to 2008 R2 server

Hi, I have tried several other possibilities.
I change expire date for my temporary assigned license (2008 CAL overused). It can be done, by changing Active Directory user properties – msTSExpireDate. When I restart my Session Host server and logged again, my license was renewed
for next 60 days (event ID - 4145).
I also delete information about license for this user (clear msTSExpireDate and msTSLicenseVersion). And the license was successfully removed from License Manager. After another SH restart it gets the same – 2008 overused – license
(event ID 4143 - license server has successfully issued …)
I now, that changing info in AD attributes is a little trick, and this is not a real value - only a reference, but it was useful to delete or change expiration date of license. But it didn’t change type of license as I expected.

I have found your post with information:
If you have a Server 2012 RD Licensing server you may install your 2012 RDS CALs on it (no downgrade necessary) and then set your Server 2008 R2 RDSH to
use the 2012 RDL server.  The 2012 RD Licensing server will automatically issue the CALs as 2008. -

  • Using Windows Server 2012 VL Product key with Windows Server 2012 R2

    Hi all,
Trying to use a Server 2012 vl product key to active a Server 2012 R2, but running into issues, namely it is not accepting the key. I have read many threads pointing out that different keys are required, but no mention of the process that one needs
to take in order to obtain/swap product keys? Any ideas appreciated? :)

The product key I have is for Windows Server 2012 Standard VL, (It's not a DC).
I have downloaded the evaluation iso for Windows Server 2012 R2 and want to licence it (with a VL), but it is failing with the Windows Server Standard 2012 VL product key.
My question is - am I doing something wrong, or do I need to ask Microsoft to change the product key / buy a new one? - What steps do I need to take?
The product key for WS2012 will not work for WS2012R2. (so, yeah, you're doing that wrong)
    WS2012R2 is not a "free" upgrade from WS2012 (it's different to Win8.0 -> Win8.1)
Your WS2012 pkey will work with WS2012. To use WS2012R2 you need a WS2012R2 pkey.
If you want to "convert" an evaluation license install, into a full licensed install, you must match the version (2012 vs. 2012R2) and the edition, and must use DISM as well as the correct pkey.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj574204.aspx
If you don't have the correct pkey for WS2012R2 already, and you don't have one waiting for you in the Volume Licensing Service Center website, you'll need to purchase a new license for WS2012R2.

The server was configured in our office and never showed this message until it was installed on site. The main difference from what I can see is that when installed on site it was given a static IP address and does not have any DNS settings in the network
    adapter properties.
I have scoured a number of forums on this error but in almost every other instance of this error message the servers are connected to a Domain Controller and the solutions generally are linked to dis-joining and rejoining the domain. Unfortunately this is
not an option for this scenario.
I initially thought that adding some relevant DNS server IP address may resolve the issue, however, we have the exact same model server configured exactly the same running at a different site that does not experience this problem. This server also has no
    DNS server configured.
I have seen a post that suggests turning off the servers "Foundation Checking", but I'm unsure how to do this.

    Thanks for your response Vivian.
I can confirm that this server is not (and never has been) a member of any active directory, it is configured as a Workgroup server. It was initially configured on a network that does have an active directory, but was never joined to it. During that time it
    never displayed these messages.
The server was moved into production on a different site and network and setup with a static IP address. The site network does have its own active directory but the server was not joined to it. It is whilst on this new network that these messages began.
Since my original post DNS servers have been added and the Microsoft activation has been verified, however, the messages are still appearing.
There are only 2 user accounts configured on this server. The local admin account and another local admin user.
The remote desktop services roles have been installed but not yet configured. I don't think that has any bearing on this scenario though.
The description of this error in the above "Introduction to Windows Server 2012 Foundation" link states:
This error occurs when the server cannot finish checking the requirements for the root domain, forest trust configuration, or both. It usually happens when the server cannot connect to a domain controller. If the situation persists, the server will
shut down 10 days after the first time the compliance check failed. Each time this error message occurs, it will state the actual time remaining before the server will shut down. If you restart the server after it has shut down because of non-compliance, the
server will shut itself down again in 3 days.
The above description leads me to the following question - In a Workgroup environment, does the server still try to contact a domain controller to establish a level of trust? If this is the case could it be that the server can no longer see the initial DC
on its new network and this is what is triggering the messages?
Am I clutching at straws here?

  • UDP when adding Server 2012 R2 to a Small Business Server 2003 Domain

So we have a Small Business Server environment. Migrating to Windows Server 2012 R2 VMs. Currently the entire old SBS environment is still in existence. I've added 2nd 2012 DC, 2012 RDS VM, and a Server 2012 File Server as well that will host the UDPs.
(Everything is working so far) BUT On the RDS Server I point the UDP Wizard to the share created on the File Server. The UDP does not appear to be created when logging into a desktop collection. The template VHDX is there but nothing else is created in the
shared folder on the file server.
I've stumbled upon people having issues with network shares and SMB versions. Do you think this could be an issue with the SMB client, etc since I'm adding them to an older domain? IF so how do I check or upgrade the client version? Will this cause the existing
SBS 2003 users from seeing this network share or cause any other issues? I really didn't think it would be an issue because the File Server and the RDS Server are both 2012 R2.
    Thanks for any help!

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Here letting you know to just recheck the configuration. If possible, try to remove the old UPD and collection; create new user under ADUC, Add that user to the same domain as of file server & RDS Server 2012 R2, then create a new share on your file server,
create new collection, and provide the actual path of the share and after that it will create a template. Once user will login to the client system for 1st time there will be available UPD (vhdx file) for the users.
