Create a view in SharePoint UI to paginate through data on a large list.

Some of my users are facing a usability issue with SharePoint.
The problem seems to be that if a list exceeds the threshold. SharePoint gives them the error ... but doesn't allow them to fix it.
So when the list threshold is exceeded... the user cannot go into the list at all to create a view or to delete old records.
They must call in the system administrator who can open bigger lists... but in large companies system administrators are not easily accessible.
How can user fix the problem himself/herself in case the threshold has increased?
The second issue is that I want to create a view on a large list that shows 50 items at a time. I don't want to filter (like year = 2013 or age < 10) I don't want to filter but I want to reduce the number of records fetched by means of pagination. Is
this possible on a large list. (I found many blogs on the web with people using XSLT web part and DVWP..... but none of them work when the list has exceeded threshold). I want a very simple view on the list which takes only 50 items at a time and works with
large lists.
val it: unit=()

In order to handle large lists (over 5000 items) you need to select the fields that you what to show in the view and set them as indexes , you can do it through list settings-> set indexes.
it might be a problem in an allready large list 'but in a small one - its pretty quick.
and to create a view'and set the pagination there - use the create view of the list itself and not a dataview webpart or other tool.
I have tested it in a project of mine in a list of 15000 records and it works , although you can not filter and sort on the view itself but on the view definitions only.
if the list is bigger then 20000 items - > it is most desireable not to use sharepoint .

  • Using filters in creating a view on Sharepoint calendar

    My office has a Sharepoint site set up, where we mainly use the calendar to record our travel, etc. I've been asked to create public views to filter the calendar according to the different teams in our office. I have no problems with this - have done this
    many times - but am trying to create a view for our largest team, and when I try to filter by their names, there are simply not enough columns available for me to add everyone. Does anyone have a solution for this?

    Hi Natashah,
    You can create a new Choice column with all the team names, when create new event in calendar, select the team name which the event belong to.
    Then when you filter for different team view in calendar, you can use the team name to filter.
    If you want to display more than 10 Filters in the ViewNew.aspx page, you can customize the ViewNew.aspx page in the 12\Tempalte\layouts folder, modify the 10 to the required number (not modify the value width=10).
    Note, back up the ViewNew.aspx page before the modification.
    Thanks

  • Creating multiple views in SQL Server 2008 database through sqlcmd

    I've written a script that generates a ddl file. The ddl file contains all the table creation, view creation and stored proc creation SQL statements for refreshing my database. The ddl file gets run by sqlcmd.
    From reading other forum posts, it seems that views and stored procedures can only be created through the sqlcmd command when they are part of an individual batch. Can someone please direct me to the documentation on how to do this?
    My DDL is below pertaining to view creation:
    CREATE VIEW [global].[viewDstLocations]
      WITH SCHEMABINDING
     AS
       SELECT REPLACE(STR(c.dstYear, 2), ' ', '0') AS 'DSTyear',
              a.countryCode AS 'CountryCode',
              a.countryDivision AS 'CountryDivision',
              a.stateCode AS 'StateCode',
              a.locationCode AS 'LocationCode',
              a.locationType AS 'LocationType',
              a.gmtVariation AS 'GMTvariation',
              c.dstVariation AS 'DSTvariation',
              REPLACE(SUBSTRING(CONVERT(VARCHAR(8), c.dstStartTs, 8), 1, 5), ':', '')  AS 'DSTstart_time',
              CONVERT(VARCHAR(8), c.dstStartTs, 12) AS 'DSTstart_date',
              c.statusMarkerStart AS 'StatusMarker_start',
              REPLACE(SUBSTRING(CONVERT(VARCHAR(8), c.dstEndTs, 8), 1, 5), ':', '')  AS 'DSTend_time',
              CONVERT(VARCHAR(8), c.dstEndTs, 12) AS 'DSTend_date',
              c.statusMarkerEnd AS 'StatusMarker_end',
              c.dataIndicator AS 'DataIndicator',
              b.locationName AS 'LocationName',
              a.latitude AS 'Latitude',
              a.longtitude AS 'Longtitude'
          FROM [global].[dstLocations] a
             LEFT JOIN [global].[dstLocationNames] b ON (b.locationId = a.locationId AND b.locale = 'en_US')
                LEFT JOIN [global].[dstLocationInfo] c ON (c.locationId = a.locationId);
    GO;
    EXEC sys.sp_addextendedproperty @name=N'MS_Description', @value=N'DST location info shown in the legacy table structure as well as data format.',
     @level0type=N'SCHEMA', @level0name=N'global', @level1type=N'VIEW', @level1name=N'viewDstLocations';
    GO;
    CREATE VIEW [global].[viewTypes]
      WITH SCHEMABINDING

          FROM [global].[levelTypes] a
             LEFT JOIN [global].[products] b ON (b.levelTypeId = a.levelTypeId)
                LEFT JOIN [global].[baseLevelTypes] c ON (c.levelTypeId = a.levelTypeId);
    GO;
    EXEC sys.sp_addextendedproperty @name=N'MS_Description', @value=N'Displays level types and their associated products and base level types.' , @level0type=N'SCHEMA',@level0name=N'global', @level1type=N'VIEW',@level1name=N'viewTypes';
    GO;
    <<Several other views>>

    Kalman,
    I've followed that approach, but was getting an error. Hopefully this gives enough detail:
    First, I use a .bat file to generate the sql file as you suggest. The structure is as follows:
    USE [MYDB]
    GO
    <<All my create scripts, without GO between them>>
    GO;
    <<All my view scripts, without GO between them>>
    GO;
    <<All my strored procedures, without GO between them>>
    GO;
    Then, I run the generated SQL with the -i option as you mentioned.
    I get back the resulting error below:
    Msg 156, Level 15, State 1, Server DEV-238SQLEXPRESS, Procedure viewDstLocations, Line 2
    Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'EXEC'.
    Msg 156, Level 15, State 1, Server DEV-238SQLEXPRESS, Procedure spGeneralDeleteNodeAndSubtree, Line 2
    Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'PROCEDURE'.
    Msg 137, Level 15, State 2, Server DEV-238SQLEXPRESS, Procedure spGeneralDeleteNodeAndSubtree, Line 2
    Must declare the scalar variable "@parentId".
    Msg 137, Level 15, State 2, Server DEV-238SQLEXPRESS, Procedure spGeneralDeleteNodeAndSubtree, Line 2
    Must declare the scalar variable "@levelTypeId".
    Msg 137, Level 15, State 1, Server DEV-238SQLEXPRESS, Procedure spGeneralDeleteNodeAndSubtree, Line 2
    Must declare the scalar variable "@name".
    Msg 137, Level 15, State 2, Server DEV-238SQLEXPRESS, Procedure spGeneralDeleteNodeAndSubtree, Line 2
    Must declare the scalar variable "@name".
    Msg 134, Level 15, State 1, Server DEV-238SQLEXPRESS, Procedure spGeneralDeleteNodeAndSubtree, Line 2
    The variable name errormsg has already been declared. Variable names must be unique within a query batch or stored procedure.
    From the documentation, I saw that CREATE VIEW needs to be the first statement in a batch. I assume this to mean I will need to break out my view and stored procedures to separate files and call the sqlcmd command multiple times, once for the table creation
    and then once for each view and once for each stored procedure. If there is a way to still do this as only one file, that would answer my original question.
    If there is anything else I can paste or send, please let me know.

  • Creating a external content type for Read and Update data from two tables in sqlserver using sharepoint designer

    Hi
    how to create a external content type for  Read and Update data from two tables in  sqlserver using sharepoint designer 2010
    i created a bcs service using centraladministration site
    i have two tables in sqlserver
    1)Employee
    -empno
    -firstname
    -lastname
    2)EmpDepartment
    -empno
    -deptno
    -location
    i want to just create a list to display employee details from two tables
    empid firstname deptno location
    and same time update  in two tables
    adil

    When I try to create an external content type based on a view (AdventureWorks2012.vSalesPerson) - I can display the data in an external list.  When I attempt to edit it, I get an error:
    External List fails when attached to a SQL view
    Sorry, something went wrong
    Failed to update a list item for this external list based on the Entity (External Content Type) 'SalesForce' in EntityNamespace 'http://xxxxxxxx'. Details: The query against the database caused an error.
    I can edit the view in SQL Manager, so it seems strange that it fails.
    Any advice would be greatly GREATLY appreciated.
    Thanks,

  • Data Modeler: Editing or creating a view "crashes"

    Hi all,
    some days ago I've created a view in my relational model using the data modeler (SQL Developer 3.2.20.09). Today I wanted to add some more columns. Unfortunately the property pane doesn't open any more when double clicking the view object (for the tables it still works). No error message is shown. In the logical view a red triangle is shown in the top left corner of the view object.
    When I try to create a totally new view then the data modeler /sql developer crashes (doesn't respond anymore)...
    What could be the reason?
    If also tried with the new version of SQL Developer - there it doesn't work either...
    Thanks in advance

  • Creating a View with "clipped" data

    Hi all,
    I'm wondering if someone might know if it's possible to have clipped data in a view without clipping the original data that the view is drawing from.
    The problem we have is that we have a full dataset that we need to keep in a complete state (as a table in Oracle). We want to be able to create a View that will display a subset of data from this table, however, some of the objects in the full dataset cross a boundary and for these objects, we want the View to only show the part of the object within that boundary.
    I know we can clip the original layer but we ideally need to keep that layer untouched and do the clipping on-the-fly in the View. Is this possible?
    Thanks for any help you can give,
    Cheers, Paul

    Do you want to:
    create view my_clip
    as
    select a.id,
    a.attribute,
    mdsys.sdo_intersection(a.geometry,b.geometry,0.005) as geometry
    from mycliparea b,
    mytable a
    where sdo_anyinteract(a.geometry,b.geometry) = 'TRUE'
    Now this will work but to get performance you will have to do one of two things:
    1. Create a function based index. See doco or other postings in this forum for examples
    of how to do this.
    2. Change the view from an ordinary view to a materialized view. And then create
    a normal spatial index on the computed shape. (I recommend the use of
    these as against ordinary views.)
    However, Bryan is right, the problem with SDO_INTERSECTION is that it can return:
    1. Polygons;
    2. Lines;
    3. Points;
    4. Compound objects containing one or more of the above.
    If you want polygons only, then you need to extract them.
    <selfpromtion>
    I have written a set of extraction functions that do this which are available for free.
    Contact me at "spatialdbadvisor at netspace dot net dot au" or "simon at spatialdbadvisor dot com"
    </selfpromotion>
    The correct view definition using one of my functions would be:
    create view my_clip
    as
    select a.id,
    a.attribute,
    geom.ExtractPolygon(
    mdsys.sdo_intersection(a.geometry,b.geometry,0.005))
    as geometry
    from mycliparea b,
    mytable a
    where sdo_anyinteract(a.geometry,b.geometry) = 'TRUE'
    regards

    Yes, you're probably hitting the 5000 list item threshold (
    http://sharepoint.stackexchange.com/questions/105937/overcoming-5000-file-document-library-limits ). I assume you can do it via the UI because you're probably logged in as an admin in which case, out of memory, the threshold is 20.000 items. You can extend
    this limit, but you probably shouldn't.

     Please suggest.

    Hi,
    According to your description, my understanding is that you got an
    error when you create a folder named “bin” in a SharePoint library with explorer view.
    There are any Microsoft.NET Framework assemblies that have controls or parts that the SharePoint site uses, which are stored in the bin folder. You can remove “bin”  from hidden segments, then you can create a folder named “bin”
    in the SharePoint library with explorer view.
       1.Opened IIS Manager and selected Server name -> Request Filtering -> Hidden Segments tab -> Removed "bin" from there:
       2.Perform IISRESET:

  • How to Create Power View Report using power pivot file in SharePoint 2013

    H,
    I have power pivot and Power View excel files. Now i want to create the Power View report in SharePoint 2013.
    What steps should i use?
    Can anyone help me on it.
    I need detailed step by step procedure.
    Thanks & Regards
    Poomani Sankaran

    Hi Aditya,
    Thanks for your reply.
    I am using Enterprise edition of SharePoint 2013 only. SQL Server 2012 SP1.
    I have configured Reporing Services also successfully. I got "Reporting" folder in "15" hive location "C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\Web Server Extensions\15\WebServices"
    SSRS Service application also i have created success in CA Manage Service Application.
    I have done "Reporting Services Add-in for SharePoint" also which is "rsSharePoint.msi".
    What should i do apart from this? Can you tell me. Its frustrating like anything.
    I have added the "PowerPivot" excel in "PowerPivot Gallery" and clicked the icon "Create Power View Report"
    Thanks in Advance.

  • Power view in SharePoint - Changing the default save location?

    Is it possible to change the default location when saving Power view back into SharePoint?
    Our users are creating their own power view reports by clicking a power view shared data source in SharePoint document library.
    When saving their reports, the default location is always the same location where the data source is. This is described here also:
    https://support.office.microsoft.com/en-us/article/Power-View-in-SharePoint-Server-Create-save-and-print-reports-f616575e-02bf-46cd-b94a-b744245ef9d1?CorrelationId=a852221e-b063-4020-a20a-53d8e8fb8b8b&ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US
    Quote from the link: "The first time you save the
    report, the default location will be the folder where the model is located."
    Ok, understood. But is it possible to change this???

    Hi again
    Ouch! Not the network!
    One of the hard learned issues that folks are unaware of until they encounter problems is that Captivate does not do well when a project is stored on a network. It's fine to keep projects there in order to back them up or as a transfer pivot location to allow others to edit, but you never want to open Captivate, click File > Open and browse to a network location to open a project for editing.
    Best practice at this point is to keep projects on your local C drive when you make edits.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Reading items from a list view in SharePoint 2013

    I am trying to read items from a Calendar, and have created a view that contains all the items/events that I would like to retrieve to package in a CSV file, specifically the Title, Description, and the Start and End Dates.
    The problem with some events is that they are recurring, and rather than use CAML to expand the events and try to query it that way, I thought it would be more elegant to just get the events from the view, and package them with a simpler query.
    The problem I am running in to is that I can reference the entire list and package the data, or I can reference the list and get all the data in a specific date range, which does not include the recurring events, but I cannot simply read the data from the
    view.
    Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. Also, can you recommend any complete-ish texts on PowerShell with SharePoint?

    Hi,
    Based on my understanding, as there is no straight way of using CAML to query all the events(specially for instances of recurring events) by a list view, I would suggest
    you separately query the instances of recurring events needed.
    A code demo(though in C#) about
    how to query events(include recurring events) from Calendar list in this thread for your reference:
