Create BIAR File to Store Sever Configuration Back Up  ?

Hi Everybody,
Post Installation of  Data Services 4.2 SP2 on Separate Unix Host pointing to existing CMS of BOBI 4.1 SP2 ( also on Unix), we want to
"Add Node" i.e. DS Unix Host xyz should be visible at CMC Home > Servers > Node. Ideally we should have server configuration backup in place
  before and after this task ' Add Node ' as per several SAP resources.
Admin Guide for BO 4.1 SP2 does have " Back Up Server Settings On Unix " - Page 489 : Task 5 ::
    " When prompted, specify the location and name of a BIAR file that you want to back up the server configuration settings to, and press Enter.
      A summary page displays the information that you have provided."
    One of the prompt post execution of serverconfig.sh
                        "    * Specify BIAR File *
                              Enter the full path of the BIAR file to store the server configuration backup. ""
However, as usual, this Admin Guide and Other SAP Resources seems to be silent on " Creating BIAR File exclusively for Back Up Purpose ".
There's many links which talks about Using Promotion Management to Import BIAR file for restore purpose and there's one article below which curses SAP ( probably with valid points!!)  about missing backup functionalities   in BO 4.0 Backup & Recovery in BO 4.0. As per this link and based on common sense approach LCM is meant for Change promotion and it was never meant to be a back up solution !!
My Q Is :
                For BO 4.1 SP2 -
                Can I create BIAR File exclusively to store the Server Configuration Back Up ( so that later this can be used to restore Server settings)
                without Promotion Management Tool  in BO 4.1 SP2 ? Alternate option of   ' biarengine.jar'  is SAP supported approach ?
                Can anyone pl provide further details on " How To Create a BIAR File To Store Server Config Back Up ? "
                At this point - we just want to store the Server Configuration Backup in separate BIAR File on the same server !
Pl. share your knowledge / suggest the work around of creating BIAR file exclusively for Back up purpose.
Thanks,
Regards,
- Ishan

Hi Seb,
Thanks for the inputs.
However,
  I  had referred this note earlier as well and like other resources it is only mentioning to point the BIAR
  file in Task 5 ( just like admin guide !!) :
   i.e.
       " When prompted, specify the location and name of a BIAR file where to backup the server configuration settings to and press Enter "
  And once again : conveniently silent about the  Original Q I have posted : " What is the SAP
  Recommended process to create a separate BIAR file in the First place which can then be pointed to
  store this  server config backup ? " !!
Thanks,
Regards,
-  Ishan

  • How to create a file and store its contents into another file?

    Hi,
    I'm having some trouble trying to create a code where I have to to create a file and store its contents into another file?
    I read the API, but I'm not certain how this file thing works.
    Here's my code so far:
    public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception
              File file = new File("tasks.txt");
              if (file.exists())
                   System.out.println("File already exists");
                   System.exit(0);
              Scanner scan = new Scanner(System.in);
              Scanner scan2 = new Scanner(System.in);
              //Scans the input line by line
              scan.useDelimiter("\\n");
              //Scans the input by tabs
              scan2.useDelimiter("\\t");
              PrintWriter outputs = new PrintWriter("newtasks.txt");
              outputs.print("ok");
              outputs.println(3);
              outputs.close();
         }

    I managed to change my text into uppercase, but how do I store the uppercase content into another file.
    -So this is what I did so far, I took a text file and modified its strings to uppercase.
    -Now I need to put those modified strings into another text file, is there a way where I can do that with my current code?
    -I already tried printwriter, but it doesn't seem to work
    public static void main(String[] args)throws IOException
              //Task[] oneHundredTasks = new Task[100];
              String uppercase;
              String combine;
              Scanner scan = null;
              FileInputStream in = null;
            FileOutputStream out = null;
            PrintWriter output = null;
            try
                 scan = new Scanner(new BufferedReader(new FileReader("tasks.txt")));
                 scan.useDelimiter("\\n");
                 scan.useDelimiter("\\t");
                while (scan.hasNext())
                     if(!scan.hasNext())
                          scan.next();
                     combine = scan.next();
                     uppercase = combine.toUpperCase();
                     System.out.println(uppercase);
            finally
                if (scan != null)
                    scan.close();
            //The program will try the input and output files
            try
                 in = new FileInputStream("tasks.txt");
                out = new FileOutputStream("newtasks.txt");
                int c;
                //The number "-1" is used to indicate that it has reached the end of the stream.
                while ((c = in.read()) != -1)
                    out.write(c);
            finally
                if (in != null)
                    in.close();
                if (out != null)
                    out.close();
         }

  • How to automate the process of creating BIAR files

    Dear All,
    Is there any way I can automate the process of creating BIAR files from the repository (Crystal / Webi reports)?

    Hi
    please check the administration guide for BO XI 3.1 (look in the chapter BIAR command line tool)
    [http://help.sap.com/businessobject/product_guides/boexir31/en/xi3-1_bip_admin_en.pdf]
    You can generate BIAR files from the command line and thus automate this at OS level.

  • Options to create BIAR file in Business objects 4.1

    What are the options to create .biar file in 4.1. Business objects used to have Import Wizard in 3.1, now its being eliminated. Any alternatives now?

    Hi,
    You can create a .BIAR file on BI 4.1, i do it all the time, using .bat and .properties files.
    .bat file :
    %DRIVELETTER%
    cd "%BOPATH%\win32_x86\jre\bin"
    java -jar "%BOPATH%\java\lib\biarengine.jar" "%BACKUPPATH%\Sauvegardes.properties"
    .properties file for juste save public file and dependencies (for exemple) :
    exportBiarLocation=%BACKUPPATH%/Sauvegardes.biar
    action=exportXML
    userName=Administrator
    password=XXXXXXXXXXXX
    CMS=localhost:6400
    authentication=secEnterprise
    exportDependencies=true
    exportQuery=select * from ci_infoobjects where SI_ancestor = 23
    exportQueriesTotal=1
    But you can used other query, and more than 1.
    Hope it help you.

  • Create biar file with command line for link universe

    Hi
    I am using boxi 3.1 and I am trying to create 2 biar files with the command line
    One file for " main" universe and it's reports and another is for a link universe and it's reports
    The problem that on "main " biar file that been created , the link universe and it's reports also appear in it.  Even so in the queries only the relevant objects are selected
    I try to remove from the properties file the parameter 'exportDependencies=true ', and then when I check the xml of the biar I so that the link universe and it's report no longer appear. But when I importing the file I receive the error message 'Required dependencies not found on target system : '[ARgp0DCiBRBOsL3EHYQaHBY, AdfkNagAE59Nsbazh40nwTU]'
    Does anyone have an idea what I need to do , in order to see in the main biar bust the main objects?

    I have done it before on BOXI R2 with the IW, and it works fine
    But any how, this is the way that we have to work with, since it is part of a customer product and the link universe and it's reports  is an additional part of the product.
    So is there a way that I can pull just the main universe and it's reports?

  • ImportWizard failed to create BIAR file

    Hi,
    We have installed BOXI 3.0 three weeks ago and so far it's worked fine, especially for scheduling java programs that we wrote.
    One of this java program for which we have created a scheduler running every night, is able to create a BIAR file (only with reports and universes) of our BOXI 3.0 server.
    This java program works and the BIAR files are created correctly with all the reports and universes every night.
    This morning I wanted to created a BIAR file (with the full content of our BOXI 3.0 server) using the Import Wizard tool and unfortunately it didn't work. So I tried to export only reports and universes with the Import Wizard tool like my java program does, but it didn't work either.
    Here is this error in my Import Wizard log file : "Error, Failed to write out object IDs map to ids file". But, last week I created a BIAR file successfully with the Import Wizard tool !!!
    Any ideas ?

    I think the ids file is an xml file the IW creates inside a biar file. It could signify the account running the IW doesn't have access to the location of the biar? maybe a full disk?
    If you can't find a resolution out here try opening a message with the deployment team.

    Your file, only remove this dialog and only replace the file directly.
    i put the capture, when i choose the file to save and the program say to me this file exist and it give me the option of replace or not,i want when i push cancel replace it continues running without get error.

  • I have an iMac with 2 internal drives and set-up with multiple user accounts.  How do I create a path to store data files on my second drive within an application?

    I have an iMac with 2 internal drives and a multiple user account set-up.  Hw do I create a path to store data files on the second drive within an application?

    This is the Mac mini forum not the iMac forum however...
    Applications written for average users like Photoshop, Word, i.e. GUI based applications provide a 'Save' dialog box which while allow selecting second drives or any drive. The dialob box initially shown might be in the simple mode but you just need to click on the triangle to show the full set of options. You should then see the different drive names amongst other options.
    If your referring to an application your writing yourself then you need to build a pathname. This can be in one of two styles depending on the programming system your using. This could be a POSIX style path or a Mac style path.
    POSIX = /Volumes/volname/foldername
    Mac style = Volname:foldername:

  • How to create a file in memory and then store it in database

    Hi Guys,
    I'm wondering how could i create a file such a plain text or css styleshhet in runtime and then store this file in the database. I need to save them in the database cause the application doe not have write permission to filesystem.
    Is that possible ? Can a file be created only in memory and saved in database instead of filesystem?
    I'd appreciate your help on this.
    Thanks a lot.

    jack.black wrote:
    What i really need is to save information as a stylesheet into db. These information is input in a form and sent to a servlet. You have a servlet and in there you are creating data, lets say the data is representable as a string.
    You have a database layer (however it is implemented) which takes data (string) and stores it as a blob presumably.
    That is two distinct and completely separate processes.
    The second has nothing to do with the first because the second doesn't care how the data is created. And you should write the code for the second and test it completely independent from the first (just as all of the database layer should be handled.)
    As for the first you can use StringWriter, perhaps wrapping it in PrintWriter if you wish. Do whatever you want to put data in there. Be sure to close it, extract the string and then use it.
    The only limitation to processing like this is that if the data gets too large (individually or due to number of threads) it could adversely impact the application.

    Hi Tulsi,
    You need to export all your report to BO repository to import those into BAIR file.

    Thanks

    Personally, I would not recommend deleting/removing the iWorks 09 folder for several reasons: one is that the new versions have had several functionalities removed and until you decide that you can work with the new one and do not miss any features the older version had, I would leave the old one in place. Personally, I will not be using the new versions.
    The second reason is that you can accomplish what you want using a different approach: simply open a Get Info window of your document and choose which version of Pages you want this to open in - you can also stipulate that all docs like this are opened with whichever particular version.
    FWIW: Once you have edited an old document in the new Pages version, you can no longer open it in the older version. However, you can still export it to the old version.

  • LR4 to PS and back creates extra file?

    I recently updated from LR3 to LR4.  My edit in Photoshop preferences are for a psd.
    When I "edit in Photoshop" using LR4, Lightroom immediately creates a "filename-edit.psd" file.  With LR3, only when I saved from within PS did it create the new file edit.psd file.  I like to keep the option open to use "save as" and save just a jpg if I know this is going to be my final edit and not have a psd.  Now if I save as a jpg, I end up with an extra .psd file.  Is this a change in LR4 or have I not set something that I had set in LR3?

    What PS version?

  • FAQ: Creating PDF Files from FrameMaker v.6 & earlier Documents -- Why you should not use "save as PDF"! -- Windows & MacOS Only!

    An issue that has come up over and over again on several FrameMaker and Acrobat/PDF email lists as well on the corresponding Adobe User-to-User forums is that of creation of PDF files. FrameMaker 5.5.6 and 6 have what looks like a convenient feature that is supposed to allow you to create PDF files via simply saving the document as a PDF file. I have gone on record as advising end-users not to use this approach for reliable creation of PDF files from FrameMaker documents under Windows and MacOS with FrameMaker 6 and earlier. Why do I most vociferously offer this advice and why doesn't the problem get fixed? And how SHOULD you create PDF files from FrameMaker?
    GOOD NEWS
    I will start with the good news. The "next major version" of FrameMaker will indeed have "save as PDF" re-implemented in a manner that it will be as reliable as printing to the "Acrobat Distiller" printer instance under Windows or the "Create Adobe PDF" desktop printer under MacOS. I am personally working with the FrameMaker development organization to make sure this really happens and is fully and properly tested and debugged! Furthermore, this next major revision of FrameMaker, unlike FrameMaker 6, will come with a Distiller installer that will properly install the "Acrobat Distiller" printer instance under Windows and the "Create Adobe PDF" desktop printer on the Macintosh (of course assuring that the latest PostScript driver is also automatically and correctly installed).
    DON'T USE "SAVE AS PDF"
    But what's wrong with "save as PDF" as currently implemented?
    The following are some of the SYMPTOMS reported over the last few years by FrameMaker users that were traced back to use of "save as PDF" under FrameMaker:
    (1) No PDF file is produced at all, possibly with a log file showing not-readily apparent PostScript errors during distillation.
    (2) The PDF file "loses" color in images. All or some images (raster, bitmap images, NOT vector artwork) appear in the PDF file in grayscale.
    (3) The resultant PDF file is on the wrong paper size, i.e., the document's logical page size does not match the output page size as seen in Acrobat or Acrobat Reader.
    (4) Some or all text in the resultant PDF file is blotchy looking or overly bold.
    (5) Some or all text in the resultant PDF file cannot be searched or indexed.
    (6) Some or all text in the resultant PDF file appears in Courier or in some other substitution font.
    (7) Interword or intercharacter spacing is a bit irregular in the resultant PDF file.
    (8) Content is missing in the margin areas of the page, i.e. you cannot do full-page bleeds.
    (9) Some or all page content is missing (other than margin areas).
    (10) Relatively inefficient PDF is generated.
    If this list by itself isn't enough for you, please note that some of these symptoms are very subtle and may escape attention when the PDF is first viewed or printed. Oftimes, it is when one attempts to manipulate the PDF file in Acrobat or repurpose its content or even view or print on a system other than the one on which the PDF file was created, that some of these symptoms make themselves obnoxiously visible (or invisible in some cases I won't make any bad jokes here about graphic examples!).
    It is important to understand that FrameMaker does NOT have its own native ability to create PDF. Any and all PDF created from FrameMaker documents is actually done by creating PostScript via the PostScript driver and having the Acrobat Distiller create PDF from that PostScript. The only exception to this is creation of PDF via the Acrobat PDFWriter driver, which is likewise not recommended (see below).
    In order for "save as PDF" to work correctly, FrameMaker must do the equivalent of calling Printer Setup and selecting the "Acrobat Distiller" printer instance under Windows or the "Create Adobe PDF" desktop printer under MacOS followed by setting the driver's options correctly for paper size, page range, etc., followed by sending the proper commands to the driver to create PostScript.
    Contrary to popular belief, PostScript as generated by the Windows and MacOS PostScript drivers is VERY device-dependent. The information in the PPD file associated with a printer driver instance provides critical parameters for generation of PostScript including:
    Whether the printer supports color (Acrobat Distiller does)
    What PostScript language level is supported (Acrobat Distiller 4.x and Acrobat Distiller 5.x are both PostScript language level 3)
    Whether native TrueType support is available (Acrobat supports native TrueType as Type 42 fonts)
    Available binary communications (Acrobat Distiller supports pure binary and ASCII, but NOT TCP, TBCP, or PJL)
    Resident fonts (Acrobat Distiller doesn't really have resident fonts)
    Available paper sizes and custom paper size availability (Acrobat Distiller supports a wide range of predefined sizes and continually variable "custom" sizes up to 200" by 200")
    Margins / printable areas (for PDF and the Acrobat Distiller, there are no margins in which imaging is not permitted)
    Device resolution (Acrobat Distiller can be set to any value from 72 to 4000 dpi; as a convenience, the Acrobat Distiller PPD provides a series of values for use by the driver. Since there is no inherent "resolution" of a PDF file, this parameter is used only for purposes of allowing PostScript programs that query for such a value to be satisfied and for the driver to be able to communicate this value to the operating system and/or application as required.)
    Paper handling (totally irrelevant to Acrobat Distiller if input or output tray selection via "setpagedevice" is found in the PostScript stream, it is ignored by Acrobat Distiller)
    Thus, if the wrong printer driver instance is selected (i.e., it isn't associated with the Acrobat Distiller PPD file) or that driver instance is improperly configured, improper PostScript will result and one or more of the symptoms described above can occur. As currently implemented, FrameMaker depending upon version will not necessarily choose the correct printer driver instance and/or correctly parameterize the print job via driver setup options. In fact, FrameMaker 5,5,6 might even try to generate PDF via calling a PCL driver, FAX driver, or even a non-PostScript inkjet printer!
    DON'T USE PDFWRITER
    The Acrobat PDFWriter is a relic of older versions of Acrobat. In fact, it is no longer installed by default in the "easy install" or the "typical install" of Acrobat 5. It hasn't really be updated since Acrobat 3 and only supports PDF 1.2. It is a GDI (Windows) / QuickDraw (MacOS) driver that directly generates PDF without any intermediary PostScript. Since it is not a PostScript printer driver, applications cannot pass through EPS graphics and/or PDFMark information (used for a wide variety of purposes by FrameMaker). For EPS graphics, most applications will send the low resolution TIFF (or PICT) EPS header in lieu of the PostScript text, if they send anything at all, to the driver. Forget about links, structure, or any other PDF "goodies." Expect that PDFWriter will fully "bite the dust" in the next major version of Acrobat.
    SO HOW DO I GENERATE PDF FILES FROM FRAMEMAKER 6 & EARLIER?
    The ONLY method that is really reliable for producing PDF files with FrameMaker 6 and earlier requires the generation of PostScript via a properly set printer driver instance associated with the Acrobat Distiller PPD and distillation of the resultant PostScript by Acrobat Distiller.
    Case 1: FrameMaker and the Full Acrobat 4.05 or Acrobat 5.0x Products
    PDF file from a "chapter" -- print directly to the Acrobat Distiller printer instance (Windows) or the Create Adobe PDF desktop printer (MacOS) already installed by Acrobat. If you check the "Acrobat data" option, then make sure to UNcheck the "print to file" option that gets set at the same time. As a result, the driver will automatically send the generated PostScript to the Distiller for you and delete the intermediate PostScript when done.
    PDF file from a "book" -- print directly to the Acrobat Distiller printer instance with the "print to file" option checked (Windows) or the Virtual Printer desktop printer (MacOS) associated with the Distiller PPD (see details below under Case 2/MacOS). You will need to manually process the resultant PostScript file through the Distiller (or use a "watched folder" arrangement).
    In both the above sub-cases, the default driver options generally will be OK, but check on paper size and communication protocol (Use pure binary, not ASCII, for optimal performance AND no CTRL-D characters under Windows. Make sure to set Level 3 only and Binary under MacOS. Font inclusion "All" for Acrobat 4.05 and "None" for Acrobat 5 under MacOS.). With Acrobat 4.05, make sure you preset the Distiller to use the joboptions you want. With Acrobat 5, you can set this on a job-by-job basis via the driver printer setup interface (or print dialog on MacOS).
    Case 2: FrameMaker 6 and the Bundled Acrobat 4.05 Distiller
    Windows -- Create a new printer driver instance using the latest version of the Adobe Universal PostScript Driver Installer, downloadable from Adobe's web site AND the Acrobat Distiller PPD file (located in the XTRAS subdirectory of the Distiller directory). This driver instance should be set to print to the local port named "FILE:". Name this driver instance as "Acrobat Distiller". The default driver options generally will be OK, but check on paper size and communication protocol (use pure binary, not ASCII, for optimal performance AND no CTRL-D characters). Make sure you preset the Distiller to use the joboptions you want. Print directly to this Acrobat Distiller printer instance. Make sure that the "print to file" option is checked. You will need to manually process the resultant PostScript file through the Distiller (or use a "watched folder" arrangement).
    MacOS -- Install the latest version of AdobePS 8.7.x, downloadable from Adobe's web site. In FrameMaker, go to Page Setup and select the "Virtual Printer" and go to the "Virtual Printer" window pane. Select the Acrobat Distiller PPD file (located in the XTRAS subfolder of the Distiller folder). Print directly to the "Virtual Printer" (Make sure to set Level 3 only, Binary, and font inclusion "All".). Make sure you preset the Distiller to use the joboptions you want. You will need to manually process the resultant PostScript file through the Distiller (or use a "watched folder" arrangement).
    Case 3: Acrobat 3
    Acrobat 3 is not officially supported for the latest OS versions and I personally would no longer recommend its use for generation of PDF files given that Acrobat 5.0.5 is the current version of Acrobat.

    You're asking a lot of ancient Acrobat to work with an Office that never existed when it was made. "Just updated my office suite" is a massive change, and Window 8 didn't exist at that time either...
