Create Home Now not working

I'm trying to test Open Directory using a single OD Master that is providing DHCP, DNS, AFP and a Share Point for User Home directories. DNS and all network services are working, I can do both forward and reverse lookup, etc. I can authenticate users against OD. But I cannot make the "Create Home Now" button in Workgroup Manager to work to create a User home on the AFP Share Point on the same machine. I can see and connect to the Share Point from a client machine.
I have read a few threads on this site, but most of them address the problem as a DNS issues and in most cases, there is no resolution to the problems. This is a clean setup server fully updated to 10.4.11.

I solved my own problem. Basically, when setting up the Share Point and enabling sharing, I was not going into Network Mount and selecting use for "User Home Directories"...

  • Create Home Now, Doesn't Work

Hello all. I am trying to create home directories for users in a "Golden Triangle" setup.
On my OD Master I'm trying click the "Create Home Now" button and no home is created. The home directories are hosted on a share that lives on a Promise RAID. I setup the folder "Users" and made it a sharepoint. I enabled the option to "Use as home folders". From a client machine I have found /Network/Servers/myserver.my.com/ with an alias named "Users". I've also tried using the createhomedir command in Terminal. That didn't work either.
Currently I do have a home folder that is on the share and that works perfectly as a Portable Home Directory, but I created this folder manually because I was migrating a user from a windows file share. I'm trying not to have to go in and change permissions and all that.
I've read a couple of other posts about the subject so I apologize for any reposting. Can anyone help???

    Hi Tony
Thanks for the reply. You are correct. The environment is your run of the mill AD-OD integrated setup.
I am giving users defined in AD the ability to use home folders shared on my OS X servers. This has been successful and I have been able to move my home data from a windows file share to the OS X User sharepoint that I've established and am using Portable Home Directories.
My problem arise when I am trying to do create home now for a user account. To test this I have setup a few test account in OD to try and generate homes. I would think that this would work. Maybe it won't. I'm also assuming that for all of the AD users I will have to manually generate atleast the root home directory folder (e.g. wsmith home directory within the Users directory). I need to do further testing but will the underlying folder structure be generated upon the user's login (i.e. Document, Public, Music, etc.)? I don't think it will.
I'm really just trying to find the most efficient way to get AD users migrated over to having Network or Portable Home Directories on the OS X sharepoint. I have it working with the UNC path and all. I'm just trying to make sure to see whether creating the folder manually is the best way because I've have go in and apply the correct permissions for the folders underlying a user's home folder.
    Thanks for the help.

  • User Home Directory not being created when "Create Home Now" button hit...

This is a cross post, since I was not sure where this should end up since it touches two pieces- Open Directory and User Management. Any help would be appreciated!
I am running OS X Server 10.5. All of my user accounts have been migrated over along with their home directories. Problem is that when creating new users and then assiging a home directory the system does not actually create the directory.
Currently all users are setup to have their home directory setup here:
afp://172.16.110.100/Users/'username'. The Users folder has been setup to automount, and all users that have folders can be accessed without issue.
The problem is when I create a new user, select the aft://172.16.110.100/Users option and then select "Create Home Now" button and save as it requests... it does not create the directories.
I have even tried to change the Home patch to make it local to see if it was an network issue, and used the /Users choice and it will not create the directory in that way either- both location go to the same place.
The system was obviously able to create the local admin account and directory admin account home folders without issue when the system was installed.
The permissions for the "Users" folder are as follow:
directory admin = Read and Write
    local admin= Read and Write
system user (root)= Read and Write
    admin group= Read Only
    everyone group= Read Only
The system is in production, so any kind of server resets need to be done after 5pm, so I have not been able to reset AFP service.
Currently the only services running are AFP, SMB and Open Directory.
All users have their entire home directories located on the server, and login over Directory Access on their clients, so all user accounts are stored on the server. No one is having issues accessing their files or logging in.
I just can not create new home directories when I create new accounts.

You do not have to be logged on as the root user to do this. Launch the terminal and type-
    sudo createhomedir -a
I run an XServe with Tiger server ( 10.4.11) and this has been the workaround I have been using.
    Good luck.

  • Create Home Now in WGM does not create home directory until...

We are using newest ver. of Leopard on our Xserve and have some issues with Workgroup Manager. We can create new users and specify the location of their HOME, however, when we try to Create Home Now and Save, the directory does not get created! No errors though, just silence and no action. Tried many times and no go.
UNTIL.... We log in with than new username directly into the server using Remote Desktop. Once logged in to Xserve as local user, the Home Directory magically appears.
    What is happening?

Not sure what's happening - you can check the logs for clues.
You can also use createhomedir -a That will create home dirs for all users (and will not touch existing home dirs)

  • ITunes 10.6.3 home sharing not working properly

iTunes 10.6.3 home sharing not working properly.  I can access with my three ATV2's watch a movie later that same day it tries to access and ATV2 just keeps trying and never gets through to the library.  If I restart iTunes its fine then later can't access.  I am running iTunes 10.6.3 on a i7 Mac Mini with 10.7.4.  Sole job is to be iTunes server and an occasional HTPC with remote buddy running.  I disabled remote buddy ajax remote feature, and file sharing is on so I can load new tracks form other macs Thats it, a vanilla install with all updates.. No problem prior but not sure if problem free period was with 10.6 earler versions or 10.5 versions.  I update as warnings to do so come up.  The remote app has same problem accessing the Home Share.  I disabled home sharing on my iPhone and set to access the old method with 4 digit code and sees all the time and will play to my express base stations so seems to be home sharing issue because iPhone apps with home sharing on and ATV2s have issue accessing.
I'm never home but when I am I use this equipment loads and this weekend not reliable at all.  I have firewall disabled, and setup is as before and is working fine.  I am using Mini by ethernet and using AEBS 1st generation gigabit as router only wired to cable modem and whole house ethernet attached, latest version AEBS gigabit as a wireless bridge and 2 prior version 11n expresses and a 11g express, all expresses are set to wireless off and are connected to ethernet and then to a stereo in 3 different rooms.
I can't be only one.  Considering downgrading to last version of 10.5 but not sure how to do this.
How many of you are having trouble?
    Any resolutions?
    How to report to Apple?
How to downgrade safely? Or is it 10.7.4?

I ran into the specific problem in another thread.  There are more than 100 connections from the apple TV's to iTunes.  You can do a netstat -a (windows or Mac), and verify the problem.  iTunes is smart enough to stop allowing more than 100 connections but stupid to allow the ATV to create so many connections.
Now for what you really want!  Set all of your ATVs to wifi only.  Even setting the iTunes host to wifi might help also.  I think that wifi is more unreliable, and forces connections to drop, keeping the count under 100.
I also turned off ip v6.  That could help you also.  I originally had problems on a Mac mini, and built a windows 7 box to try to fix the problem.  The wifi trick worked on both platforms.  Several of us have bug reports into apple.  I have a wired house also, and am very angry to NEED to use slow wifi to overcome this problem.  The ATV gen 3 has been able to keep up with 1080p over wifi, so it doesn't hurt too much.  What really hurts is spending over 40 hours troubleshooting this bug.

  • Iphone 4 Home button not working after upgrade to OS 4.3.5

Iphone 4 Home button not working after upgrade to OS 4.3.5.Please help!!!!!!!!

It seems that settings of mail accounts have something to do with it. I've delete my gmail account and am now using Microsoft Exchange. It seems better, yet not perfect. The issue is definitely due to OS 4.3.1
Apple answer is - no answer. It is a shame that the quality of their products, in terms of design and concept, is not match by a care for customers. It is not normal that I, as a customer, have to spend hours reading Apple Discussions forum to try to understand what the problem is. A little more respect for a customer that spend big $$$ buying their products wouldn't hurt.

  • Iphone 4 home button not working, called never fixed, then cracked screen before bringing it back again, will they blame the cracked screen if i bring it back?

I bought an iPhone 4 less than a year ago, then one day the home button randomly stopped working, I bought the warranty so I decided to call in and see what was wrong with it. The girl said that restoring the phone would correct the problem which it did. But it is only a temporary fix, it happens more often now. So I was meaning to call in soon, but the other day my phone fell out of my pocket IN CASE from a foot height and cracked the screen. I nearly threw up. All the years I have had a phone I have never cracked or broken one, strongest screen my ***. Anyway, if I contact them again now will they fix the home button problem? or will they say that the cracked screen is obviously the cause of the home button not working? which it is not!! I don't care about the screen being cracked its not on the actual screen just on the side so its irrelevant to me. Plus I heard it is outrageosly pricey to replace.

Apple, as I said, does not repair your iPhone. All hardware service issues are handled by replacing the unit. So they can't handle the home-button issue without also addressing the issue of the cracked screen, for which they'll almost certainly charge you. But you can make an appointment at an Apple Store or call Apple tech support and plead your case.
    Regards.

  • Home button not working on iPad 2 after iOS5.1.1

I got iPad 2 updated with ions 5.1.1
It worked fine for a week and now the home button does not work. I followed all posts here to reset, restore etc. but nothing helps. This is already a replacement iPad I got for my previous non functional iPad 2 which had battery issues, which apple swapped in store last week.
    Any advice ?

    Update -
Called apple support and did not get steps to try and was asked to visit apple store. Went to apple store and since the problem is intermittent they did nothing.
    Now the problem is back.
Also, I notice there are lot of Low memory diagnostics logs which I thik may be leading to home button not working BUT that iOS should handle as part of memory management. I restarted iPad 2 and still memory issue/ home button not working which seems weird
I am really disappointed and not sure how to get this addressed.
    Apple, please help!

  • I update my iphone 4g .now not working how to find old firmware version

i update my iphone 4g to newer version ios 7.now not working how to find old firmware version

Downgrading the iOS version is not supported by Apple.
Without know how it is not working:
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
BTW you posted in the iPod touch forum
