Create OS X Default Profile/Template & Bind to AD (10.6 & 10.5)

This article will explain how to create a default user profile/template for OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard & OS X 10.5 Leopard as well a quick overview of how to bind your Mac to AD (Active Directory)
Why create a Default profile/template?
If you a computer that multiple users log into it on a regular basis & you want all users to have an identical profile with looks, setting etc. then this article will show you how to do so.
Binding to AD (Active Directory)
With the new version of OS X Snow Leopard, Apple has now moved where the Directory Utility is found. It's now part of core services unlike OS X Leopard where it was found in the Utilities folder.
Step 1 (Create default user profile/template ** OS X Snow Leopard & Leopard)
With your “admin” user fully update OS X.
** Keep in mind that there are some applications out there that will not run or support past certain version of an OS X. If this does not apply then update to latest OS X version release.
With your “admin” user install all needed applications that will be needed all check for any updates for those applications.
From the “Accounts” panel create a new user. (For this document I will name create a users named “default”)
Enable “Root” user:
Snow Leopard 10.6 - Go to the Accounts Panel -> Login Options -> Network Account Server & select “Join”. Next select “Open Directory Utility”.
Once you have the “Directory Open” select ”Edit” from menu bar & select “Enable Root User” and give it a password.
If you chose to the direct method to open “Directory Utility” is /System/Library/CoreServices/Directory\ Utility.app
Leopard 10.5 - Go to /Applications/Utilities/Directory\ Utility.app
Once you have the “Directory Open” select ”Edit” from menu bar & select “Enable Root User” and give it a password.
Logout & then login into “default” user
Organize the Dock with all your needed applications
Adjust settings & preferences for:
Dock
Desktop/Finder/MenuBar
System Preferences (Run through each option in System Preferences & adjust as needed)
Run “ALL” applications that will be used on the system. Once each application has launched open it’s preferences and adjust as needed. (In most cases, it’s recommended to turn “off” “check for updates” if you do not want users getting prompted each time an application releases an update)
If there is more than one browser installed you should set which browser should be default. At this point you can also select a default “Save Folder” if you want users to select where download will appear.
In case you have downloaded & visited website during your profile creation, clear the cache, history & cookies in each browser.
Once you feel that your “default” user is prepared the way you want others to see it proceed to the final step, but only when you are finished working on the user.
Clear the “default” user caches. Go to /Users/”default”/Library/Caches & simply delete/trash all the files in this folder.
**Clearing the user caches is not fully needed but if you want to slim down the default user profile/template for a faster login, then removing these files will speed things up. Applications will just create the needed files here when they are needed.
Next, open “Keychain Access” /Applications/Utilities/Keychain\ Access.app
Select “Login” from the “Keychains” area then select the “File” menu and chose “Delete Keychain login”.
Now restart the computer and login as root.
We now just need to copy the newly created profile/template and replace the system default profile.
Open Terminal & run the following commands:
Backup current system profile (in case something happens you can restore this folder)
Right click and select “Compress English.lproj”
sudo rm -rf /System/Library/User\ Template/English.lproj/*
(Removes contents from English.lproj folder)
sudo cp -R /Users/”default”/* /System/Library/User\ Template/English.lproj/*
(Copies your newly created “default” user profile/template) *May take a minute if profile is big
You have now created a default profile that will load up each time a new user logs in.
Now restart & login as your “admin” user and run “Repair Disk Permissions” in “Disk Utility”
If you wish to bind the computer to Active Directory continue to Step 2.
Step 2 (Bind to AD / Active Directory ** OS X Snow Leopard & Leopard)
Snow Leopard 10.6 - Go to the Accounts Panel -> Login Options -> Network Account Server & select “Join”. Next select “Open Directory Utility”.
If you chose to the direct method to open “Directory Utility” is /System/Library/CoreServices/Directory\ Utility.app
Leopard 10.5 - Go to /Applications/Utilities/Directory\ Utility.app
Once Directory Utility is open double click “Active Directory”
Once open enter in the needed info for your Domain, name computer & select what options you want or don’t want.
Now simply select “Bind” and enter in a user/password that has Network Administrator access to your domain.
You are now bound to your domain.
It’s also a good idea to change the login window to “Name & Password” if there will be many users logging into the computer.
Now restart your computer.
Once restarted & sitting at your login window, the best way to know you are connect to your domain is to click 5 Times where you see your computer name. You should see a colored dot, which will give you your status. You want to see Green.
Now try logging in using an AD/Active Directory account.

See:
This is usually caused by a problem with the profiles.ini file and the profile marked as Default=1 in this file is no longer present on the hard drive.
*Windows: %AppData%\Mozilla\Firefox\
C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
*Linux: ~/.mozilla/firefox/
*Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/
In Mac OS X v10.7 and later, the ~/Library folder is a hidden folder.
You can use one of these to make Firefox create/use a new default profile:
*Delete the profiles.ini file to force Firefox to create a new default profile
*Use the Profile Manager to create a new profile
*Use "Choose Folder" when you create a new profile to select the location of a lost profile and recover this profile

• Is there a way to create a custom default profile in mavericks?

Hi,
There was a way to do this by copying profile folders in 10.7/10.8, but it doesn't seem to work with Mavericks. The instructions I used are here:
http://sites.sas.upenn.edu/jasonrw/blog/2013/03/create-custom-default-user-profi le-os-x-107108
Now, when I follow the same instructions with Mavericks, I get a local keychain error, despite having removed the login keychain all together.
Thoughts?
Many thanks in advance

What? You're stymied? All I can suggest is to try Apple Support.

• How do I create a default profile for all users of a computer in Windows 7/Vista for Firefox versions above 8? I'd like all new users on a computer to get the same defaults, bookmarks, homepage, etc...

I have found help for this on older versions of Firefox, but I can't seem to find anything for the latest versions above 8. There must be someway to accomplish this for imaging on a large scale.

You can create a defaults\profile template folder in the Firefox program folder for new profiles the same way as in older versions. That folder only isn't there anymore because all files have been moved to the omni.ja(r) archive, so you need to create it yourself.

• Leopard Default User Template

Hi,
I used to be able to create a customised default user template in Tiger by copying my customised account to the /System/Library/User\ Template/English.lproj folder.
In leopard however new accounts are not getting the customised settings.
My method is as follows:
Create temp account
Login to temp account and customise all my settings such as desktop image, icons, finder preferences, dock, program preferences, printers, etc.
before logging out I delete the login keychain, references and files. Clear out the ~/Library/Caches folder.
logout and into and admin account.
Run terminal
su - to enable root user
copy the current default template to a backup area using..
cp -R /System/Library/User\ Template/English.lproj/* /backup are path
Then clear it out
rm -R /System/Library/User\ Template/English.lproj/*
Then copy the new one in
cp -R /Users/Temp/* /System/Library/User\ Template/English.lproj
All the files and folders copy over but when I login with a new account none of the customised settings are used.
Any ideas on how to get this working?

Situation I can authenticate network users to LDAP on our Novell server. Our Novell server does not have mappings for Apple computers though so it is just basic authentication. I was able to script mapping of the appropriate volumes as a start up item in the dock because some of our servers can connect as AFP servers.
The problem is after they authenticate through LDAP at the login screen they all get dumped into the root users profile and they have root user powers. Even after I disabled the root user.
I wanted them to use the custom default profile I made. I created a temp user called student customized it copied its profile to the default user profile location. With the instructions you posted above. If I create a new user in account preferences it uses that custom profile fine BUT network users always login as the / a root user.
I could possibly use the root user because we want to lock down the harddrive with deepfreeze. BUT the Novell iPrint program required for users to print does not work at all in this crazy Fake Root user environment.
What am I missing to get my Mac to use my custom profile.

• Enabling Password controls in the Default Profile

After sharing with customer metalink note 114930.1, customer has the following questions:
1. Will Oracle suggest enabling password controls in the profile "Default" that is created during the installation without those controls enabled?
2. Oracle accounts (SYS, SYSTEM etc.) are created with the default profile associated with them (at that time there are no manually created profiles). Does Oracle permit assigning other profiles (created after installation) to those most critical accounts
Any help/direction is much appreciated

Hi,
1/ I don't know if Oracle would suggest that, but I would either enable password control if you have such a requirement, wherever you set it up, or don't touch anything if it's just to leave it disabled... I usually create specific profiles for the users and set up the limits according to the kind/type of users they are.
2/ Don't you have no test instance?
TEST> create profile p limit failed_login_attempts 5;
Profil cr
TEST> alter user sys profile p;
Utilisateur modifi
TEST> alter user system profile p;
Utilisateur modifi
TEST> select username, profile from dba_users where username in ('SYS','SYSTEM');

• Creating Default Profiles

Hi,
I'm having issues with creating a Default Profile with OSX 10.7 (Lion)...
I'm setting up an image for both a 2010 iMac (OS 10.6.8) and a brand new 2011 iMac (OS 10.7.1).
I 've been building them together with the same software, etc... and have created a local account to build the profile from, running each bit of software, registering them, and making customizations...
With the 10.6 the default profile worked by copying my files to “/System/Library/User Template/English.lproj” but with 10.7 I'm still getting the Apple Galaxy background, and I've lost all my software customizations when logging on as a new user...
I would downgrade to Snow Leopard but this isn't possible as this is a brand new iMac, drivers, etc....
Can anyone help here?
Chris.

Hi,
That is the disk cache of Firefox, where contents of loaded pages are kept for faster retrieval and it also helps to conserve bandwidth. To disable this: '''Tools''' ('''Alt''' + '''T''') > '''Options''' > '''Advanced''' > '''Network''', check (tick) '''Override automatic cache management ''' and put the value at zero.

• How to create a default profile for all users in Firefox 9.

I run a computer lab, and am looking for a way to create a default profile in Firefox 9 that new users can use. I want them to be able to launch Firefox for the first time, and see my homepage. I want to disable any check for default browsers, firstrun pages, or any other prompts.
The old .adm files for group policy don't seen to be working any longer.

See http://www.frontmotion.com/Firefox/howtodeploy.htm
You can create a defaults\profile folder in the Firefox program folder and place files in it to be used to create and initialize a new profile.

• Default Profiles & Page Templates

I am not sure is the right discussion for this question but I am hoping somebody might be able to help. I want to be able to associate a Page Template with a Default Profile but can't seem to find out how to do this or even if it is possible. For example you are not offered the option to choose a page template whislt within the default profile editor.
What I am trying to achieve it to make every user's home page be based on a template so that at a later date we can update everybody's home pages centrally, whether it be adding new protlets or changing the layout.
Can anybody help?

Welcome to Apple Discussions
The trick to getting elements like your colored bars & logo to carry over from one page to the next is to place them on the section master. Make sure they are floating objects & then select them, go to Format > Advanced > Move Object to Section Master. However, text will no longer wrap around these objects, so you will have to make adjustments to your margins if you don't want text to be on top of them.

• Advice for Creating a Custom Default User Profile in Windows Enterprise 8/8.1 Preview

Just after some advice on the Best way to create a custom Default User Profile for our Windows 8 Enterprise Image.
We are also looking at the Windows 8.1 Enterprise preview so advice on creating a Default User profile for this would also be appreciated.
My Requirements are listed below
-Pinned Web sites that open in Windows 8 App style IE
-Default Windows 8 pre-installed Apps
-The Microsoft Lync Windows 8 Client from the App Store *I understand this would be tricky, not fussed though if it cant be done*
-Customised Start screen layout
I have tried the Copy Profile tag in the Unattend.xml and syspreped the machine, this did not work.
I have tried using the new "Start Screen Layout" Group Policy object, this also did not work
The Closest I can get was to setup a user profile, Backup the Default User profile, Rename the User I worked on to "Default", Clean up the temp folder, then navigate through the user registry and replaced any absolute profile paths with the %USERPROFILE%
variable. This worked in terms of setting the layout of the start screen, but the Lync App was not present, and Windows 8 apps, eg Video, Music and IE, would crash when attempting to open them.
I know I am doing something wrong, so any advice would be much appreciated.
Thankyou

Still not getting the results that I want, to recap I am trying to do the following.
Create a Windows 8.1 Enterprise Standard Operating Environment (SOE) Image for laptop devices at our school. These devices will be in the Students hands 24/7 and will be joined to our Windows 2012 based domain.
I am trying to create a custom Default user profile for the image so that when a student logs onto the Laptop for the first time they get a start screen that we have created.
The start screen consists of Pre-installed Modern Apps, a modern app created by our Software team that is side-loaded, Office 2013 Applications, and most importantly Tiles for Websites such as our Learning Management System and Intranet Portal.
Now to the issues
I boot the target system into Audit mode, and setup the start screen accordingly. For the Websites,
I open the websites in the IE11 Modern app and use the built in control to pin the site to the start screen. Everything goes and looks as expected.
I then run sysprep with a custom unattend.xml with copyprofile inside it. Again everything runs as expected.
Now when I create a new user on the system the custom start screen appears however the websites that were pinned are no longer on the start screen. BUT when I manually open the Modern IE11 app, navigate to the website and pin the site, The Tile now appears
on the start screen in the location I put it.
<Rant>
Now this puts us in a situation where we can no longer deliver a Standard Operating environment for not just our managed laptops but also our labs where a student just wants to logon and get to work.
Why as a Desktop and System Administrator, who manages a fleet of 300+ Desktops and 1000+ Laptops do I not have the full power to customise things they way I want them.
Yes I am aware of the new Group Policy setting for deploying Start screen configurations, Doesn't work when Web sites are pinned
Yes I am aware of AppsFolderLayout.bin, Doesn't work for Pinned sites.
Do the links above to Microsoft TechNet articles explaining how to customise Start Screens help, No they do not.
Finally I am aware that I can just create a shortcut to the websites and pin those, the issue is that this does not utilise the new Live Tile code that was introduced with IE11 and we plan to use these Tiles as another notification system for our staff and
students.
I will continue to work on this, if I manage to find a solution myself I will post the process, however if anyone in the community, or from Microsoft for that matter, has a proven solution to pinning websites to the default user profiles start screen, please
post it.
</Rant>
Thankyou

• Firefox crashes after creating the default profile

Hi,
I'm using firefox in HP-UX 11.11. I see that when I open the

• How to create an default profile for every user on one machine? Deployment of configurations?

On firefox 3.5.X i can copy an configured profile from an user-folder to the programm folder of firefox. \mozilla firefox\defaults\profiles.
After an new user log in to the machine the default profile will get the actual profile of the new user. With all bookmarks, configurations and so on.
But this doesn't work with the firefox 3.6.10? What changed? What will be the way i can get an default configuration for every user on one machine? I want to deploy the firefox with an default configuration in our enterprise? Why does the behaviour change?
What to do?
Thanks...

No - there are no missing data, because nothing will be copied. The profile - folder does not work.
There are the standard first start behavior.
There might be another trick? Hint? Todo?
Thanks.

• Default profile not working when home directory on Windows server.

Hi,
Using 10.6.4.
I have created a default profile (stored in /System/Library/User Template/English.lproj) and this works fine for new local users.
If I bind to AD (Using UNC path from Active Directory to derive network home location) and login as an AD user for the first time the default profile is not applied.
Has anyone experienced this problem?
Thanks,
Dom.

I'm experiencing the same thing, and am wondering if you had any success?

• Using SC Profile Templates - {{AI_HOSTNAME}} variable not being used

I'm having trouble with using AI System Configuration Profile Templates.
I cannot get the AI_HOSTNAME, AI_IPV4 and AI_NETWORK variables to be passed onto the install client. Has anyone had any success with this?
Amongst all the usual stuff, my SC template contains these lines:
<propval type="astring" name="nodename" value="{{AI_HOSTNAME}}"/>
<propval type="net_address_v4" name="static_address" value="{{AI_IPV4}}/25"/>
<propval type="net_address_v4" name="default_route" value="{{AI_NETWORK}}"/>
The lines are taken from the "Installing Oracle Solaris 11 Systems" example.
Then I submit to the AI service
# installadm create-client -n s11-sparc -e aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff
# installadm create-profile -n s11-sparc -f <profile_file> -p <profile_name> -c mac="aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff"
The documentation shows that afterwards I should be able to do "# installadm export -n s11-sparc -p <profile_name>" and see the {{AI_placeholders}} replaced with the variable values. But all I see are the unchanged {{AI_placeholders}}.
I have tried exporting the variables first as suggested in the installation guide, e.g.,
# export AI_HOSTNAME=myhost; export AI_IPV4=10.245.129.175; export AI_NETWORK=10.245.129.129
# installadm create-profile -n s11-sparc -f <profile_file> -p <profile_name> -c mac="aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff"
I have tried the other method shown in the 11.0 installation guide. In this case the sc profile isn't found during AI (which makes sense because the -c are selection criteria, AI can't match what isn't defined yet).
-c hostname="myhost" -c ipv4="10.245.129.175" -c network="10.245.129.129
I have been referring to Chapter 11 of "Installing Oracle Solaris 11 Systems". The documentation for Solaris 11.0 and Solaris 11.1 is quite different. The 11.0 guide looks more correct than the 11.1 guide. But neither are working for me.
11.0 http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23824_01/html/E21798/glhwo.html
11.1 http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E26502_01/html/E28980/glhwo.html
Additionally the man page examples are quite different. http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E26502_01/html/E29031/installadm-1m.html Example 20 seems particularly nonsensical.
When the client installs, everything else in the defined in the sc profile is correct, but the hostname stays "solaris" and the IP and default route are the ones assigned by DHCP. The {{AI varaibles}} I passed in are ignored.
My environment:
AI server is Solaris 11.1 SRU 1.0.4 ([email protected],5.11-0.175.1.1.0.4.2 and [email protected],5.11-0.175.1.0.0.24.1736)
IPS repo contains Solaris 11 11/11 (up to SRU 13-04) and Solaris 11.1 (up to SRU 1.0.4)
Install client is a logical domain on SPARC T4-2 ([email protected],5.11-0.175.1.1.0.3.0)
Missing JumpStart :-(
Rick
P.S.
In the Oracle Knowledgebase the only reference to AI_HOSTNAME is this bug
Bug 15729916 : SUNBT7068653 PROFILE CRITERIA NOT CORRECTLY INPUT FOR TEMPLATING
Says it was fixed in Solaris 11. Maybe it broke again, or maybe I'm just missing something.
Edited by: user1077157 on Dec 3, 2012 8:30 PM

Hi William,
Thanks for confirming that there is no current template variable to represent the default router IP address. That's what I had concluded but I wanted to be sure of it before I a put a work around in place. As you said, this templating is new, but that's why I wanted to investigate because it looks like it could solve a few problems for me.
I reckon you're right AI_NETWORK didn't change between 11.0 and 11.1. It's just that the doco changed in the meantime and some months had passed since I last tried to use it. In September (we were on 11 11/11 SRU 8) I couldn't get AI_NETWORK to work as the default route as indicated in the 11.0 installation guide, so I put the IP addresses of the routers in my SC profiles and made a note to come back to it later. After updating to 11.1 I came back to it and found it still didn't work, but it wasn't working for different reasons.
Here is our use case:
We would prefer not to rely on DHCP for providing configuration data at install time. This is for operational and change mangagement reasons rather than technical. In our organisation there is no DCHP in the Production Data Centres, IP configuration is static and that is the end of the story. DHCP is available in some parts of pre-production environments. wanboot is available most places.
So we need a provisioning mechanism that can use DHCP if it is available, but use something else otherwise. OBP network-boot-arguments seems to be the "something else" for SPARC network installations. (We'll also have to provide distribution constructor ISO images for installing clients in new sites where the network infrastructure is not complete -- but that's another story).
In parts of the network where DHCP is allowed, it may not be set up. This can take several weeks to be implemented because it crosses several lines of business. The security team have to set up ACLs in the firewalls, the network team have to configure ip-helpers on the switches to pass DHCP requests along, another part of the network team have to configure the routes, the AD team have to provision a new DHCP range, scope and next-server value to direct to the AI server, the DNS team have to create placeholder A and PTR records. Some tasks can occur concurrently although others cannot. Then we add change control, approval processes, documenation updates and liaison with outsourcing providers to all this... it becomes a non-trivial case.
If the field engineer who racks and cables the server to the management vlan (or the sysadmin that creates a new LDom) can simply add some OBP variables then 'boot net - install' that will save a heap of time and money.
I don't think that we are unique in our requirements. I've worked in several organisations where there have been similar contraints.
That's why I would like two more AI_ variables for SC Profiles, namely AI_ROUTER and AI_NETMASK. These would map to the router-ip and subnet-mask in the OBP network-boot-arguments.
For consistency with AI_IPV4 maybe they should be AI_ROUTERV4 and AI_NETMASKV4. The existing AI_NETWORK should probably be AI_NETWORKV4
In the meantime, the workaround I mentioned will be a first boot script called by an SMF service. It will look for eeprom network-boot-arguments. If none are defined, nothing will happen. Otherwise, if the OBP host-ip matches the current IP and the OBP hostname matches the current hostname and the OPB router-ip does not match current default route, the script will assume that the client has been freshly built with "boot net - install" (I might check a few things in /var/log/install/install_log too). It will then delete the default route and add a new one using the OBP router-ip. It'll then clear the OPB network-boot-arguments and restart the sendmail and dns client services.
The build team will then have the option of creating an SC profile from the template with AI_ placeholders or creating an SC profile with specific values, In both cases they can set the OBP network-boot-arguments and bypass DHCP.
Cheers,
Rick
P.S.
Thought I should add the reasoning for AI_NETMASK (aside from the fact that it is grabbable because it is in the OBP network-boot-arguments list).
I envision using AI_NETMASK to reduce the number of SC profiles I will need, for example

Service/Profile Criteria
s11-sparc
net22 netmask = 255.255.252.0
net23 netmask = 255.255.254.0
net24 None
net25 netmask = 255.255.255.128
net26 netmask = 255.255.255.192
net27 netmask = 255.255.255.224
net28 netmask = 255.255.255.240

The net+NN+ profiles themselves will be identical except for one thing, the CIDR notation subnet bits at the end.
+<propval type="net_address_v4" name="static_address" value="{{AI_IPV4}}/24"/>+
At the moment because only AI_NETWORK is available, so I will need an SC Profile for each network that is not a /24 That will get ugly eventually.
As I understand it, you want to maintain a direct mapping between AI_ variables and the network-boot-arguments key-value pairs. But if you're open the having some AI_ variables that are derived or calculated at install time there are a couple that would be nice to have.
AI_MASKBITS - calculate the CIDR notation mask bits from the network-boot-arguments subnet-mask, e.g.,
+<propval type="net_address_v4" name="static_address" value="{{AI_IPV4}}/{{AI_MASKBITS}}"/>+
AI_IPV4CIDR - even nicer - network-boot-arguments host-ip, slash, CIDR maskbits calculated from network-boot-arguments subnet-mask, e.g.,
+<propval type="net_address_v4" name="static_address" value="{{AI_IPV4CIDR}}"/>+

• Where to paste my old (default) profile

windows xp I have located my backed up profile and can do a "copy" when I reopen firefox and go to basic application open containing folder quit a few files with different extensions open up...which one do I paste to?

Your profile folder is not in "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\defaults\profile" in case you pasted there. That folder is a template folder to create a new profile. If you copied files to that folder then you need to remove them.
See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
"Application Data" in XP/Win2K and "AppData" in Vista/Windows 7 are hidden folders, use %APPDATA% in the File name field
See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Show_hidden_files_and_folders
Go to: Control Panel > Folder Options > "View" tab > under "Hidden files and folders", select "Show hidden files and folders"
You may want to uncheck the box "Hide extensions for known file types" to see the file extensions of all files.
* XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
* Vista/Windows 7: C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
You shouldn't copy the entire profile folder, but only the files that you really need. That is why Tony posted [[Recovering important data from an old profile|that link]] above.
