Create Windows Shortcuts

With ZfD 7 I was able to add Windows application shortcuts in the the Application Object. I've been searching on how to do this with ZCM bundles and so far I'm stumped. I don't see any actions related to creating a shortcut, nor can I find any reference to shortcuts in the documentation.
I've also tried uploading a shortcut file to the server, but the ZCC simple follows the path within the shortcut, attempting to upload the files the shortcut targets instead.
Has anyone figured out a way to do this? Am I missing something obvious?

Well, We all have those moments.
One of my favorites was the time I spend close to an hour trying to get a PC
to recognize an external USB HDD.
After Giving UP, I asked my boss.
It took him about 3.2 Seconds..............You have it plugged into the
wrong computer........Doh!!!
(In my defense, there were 4 stacked on top of each other, but
still..............)

  • Local JNLP filename is truncated in windows shortcut

    Greetings,
    I've got a problem with JNLP shortcut paths getting truncated. I'm running Windows XPsp2 as the client with Java 1.5.0.10.
    The web URL I'm accessing is dynamically generated, and is apparently getting too long to be handled. I'm passing only the necessary data keys within an encoded URL, something like:
    http://server.domain.com:port/application/jnlp/5t-cjxLGtlRl4ZbRO.zIYu61f32GNDSvTby.W8mvgHhCQVHbbRnoSjLdvCqz9u-KmOAAq9uJYDe9i1RgD7kMuAg-udKBBq5xK.O5Od.uhx9ASvD.JnPMUImR9WMl-iUfFtH38.c04u2M1055QiOL8A__
    and using a URI mapping within my web-app for +/jnlp/*+ to get the request into my servlet for decoding and dynamic JNLP generation. Within the servlet I decode the keys and, based on other data retrievals, generate the JNLP file for that user.
    Everything works very smoothly, as long as the encoded string doesn't exceed a certain length.
    Whatever the length of the URL, the application launches from the web with no problem. But, my application needs to support being launched offline, and so it I have to set to create windows shortcuts when launched.
    When the URL length gets to be too long, the shortcuts fail to find the icon, and when launched from the shortcut generates the following error:
    An error occurred while launching/running the application.
    Category: Invalid Argument Error
    Could not load file/URL specified: C:\Documents and Settings\user12\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javaws\http\Dserver.domain.com\Pport\DMapplication\DMjnlp\AM5t-cjxLGtlRl4ZbRO.zIYu61f32GNDSvTby.W8mvgHhCQVHbbRnoSjLdvCqz9u-KmOAAq9uJYDe9i1RgD7kMuAg-udKBBq5xK.O5Od.uhx9ASvD.JWith the last, in this case 39, characters truncated off the string.
    I'm not sure if this is a JavaWeb limitation, where the javaws application can only handle a directory path up to 252 characters.
    Or (in my opinion more likely) this is a Microsoft limitation, where the full shortcut target can't exceed 293 characters.
    While I've been able to manually to (on my development system) recreate these shortcuts as:
    Target: C:\WINDOWS\system32\javaws.exe -offline "5t-cjxLGtlRl4ZbRO.zIYu61f32GNDSvTby.W8mvgHhCQVHbbRnoSjLdvCqz9u-KmOAAq9uJYDe9i1RgD7kMuAg-udKBBq5xK.O5Od.uhx9ASvD.JnPMUImR9WMl-iUfFtH38.c04u2M1055QiOL8A__"
    Start in: C:\Documents and Settings\user12\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javaws\http\Dserver.domain.com\Pport\DMapplication\DMjnlp
    And the shortcuts function as expected. But, I clearly won't have that level of control over the end user's system configurations.
    Has anyone else encountered/overcome this limitation?
    And if so what was the workaround?
    Thanks.

    One ugly hack that I've found can be made to work, as part of my web start application, using the http://www.optimumx.com/download/ shortcut.exe executable, and dancing around the system properties:
    System.getProperty ("os.name", "").toLowerCase ().matches ("^.*windows*.$");
    System.getProperty ("user.home", ".").replace ('\\', '/');
    System.getProperty ("java.io.tmpdir", userHome).replace ('\\', '/');
    Since, I'm running with a signed application for other reasons, I can extract the the executable as a resource from the jar file, play it out into the temp directory, and use it to update the shrotcuts, resetting the parameters, start in directory, and icon locations of the *.lnk file.
    But, this is a very ugly workaround for what looks like a simple buffer overflow problem.

  • Error: "Unable to create a shortcut for MyApp" on Windows 2008

    When I try to install my JAVA app on windows 2008 via Java Web Start, it pop up a error message "Unable to create a shortcut for MyApp". The app can startup and work correctly after clicking "ok" on error message. BUT, there is no shortcut created on Desktop or Start Menu.
    This problem occured on Windows 2008 ONLY. I have test the installation process on different OS with JRE 6u14 and 6u20:
    Windows XP PASS
    Windows 7 PASS
    Windows 2003 PASS
    Windows 2008 FAIL, can't create shortcut on Desktop and Start Menu
    And I have test the demos on http://pscode.org/jws/api.html, the problem is same.
    Does any one has any idea on this?

    - Menu items do not work on Ubuntu Linux at all.
    - As a result of that, I am thinking to declare neither desktop shortcuts nor menu items in the JNLP file, but instead using the IntegrationService(1) to perform more specific tests, and offer the end user whatever is available.
    - This is probably a better strategy overall, because if you automatically create desk-top shortcuts (or menu items) for the user, you will discover there is always someone who considers them an unnecessary bother.
    1) BTW - I have been meaning to do a demo. of the IntegrationService and add it to the other examples at PSCode, but have not yet found the time. ;-)Thanks for reply.
    But I don't understand very clear. I'm focus on the windows platform not Linux. Do you suggest to create shortcuts and menu items manually by coding in Applet?
    I prefer to use the JNLP file cause it works good on the other OS than to change my code.
    What I want to know is:
    1. Is it a bug for JRE on Windows 2008?
    2. If NO, how can I make it work on Windows 2008? Do I need change some System Setting or Browser Setting?
    3. If YES, maybe I can try to change my code, but why there is no bug filed in the Bug Database?
    BTW, I use the IE browser.

  • Create Sleep Shortcut Windows 8

    Is there a way to place a shortcut on the desktop for Sleep?  I have only found a way to shut down the machine, put it into hibernation, or to perform a hybrid shutdown (by creating a shortcut with shutdown.exe and appropriate modifiers).

    After some investigation I have found that the sleep function only works if you disable hibernation before you use the shortcut.  It will then default to the sleep function instead of hibernation.
    Steps listed below on how to disable the hibernation function:
    Sleep command – rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState 0,1,0
    [Hibernation must be disabled for this command to work or it will just Hibernate instead of
    Sleep]
    To Disable Hibernation –
    Display the pop-out Charms menu and select Search (or press Windows key + q).
    Type CMD then right click the Command Prompt app and select ‘Run as administrator’ from the panel at the bottom to open an elevated Command Prompt.
    Select ‘Yes’ if a User Account Control warning appears.
    In the Command Prompt, type “powercfg -h off” without the “” and press Enter to disable Hibernation.
    It will not provide you any conformation of its completion.

  • Creating a shortcut of an application on the desktop

    Hi,
    I've just purchased an ibook G4 running on Mac OS X (10.4.8) from apple and wanted to know how can I create application shortcuts on my desktop? Since I'm familar with Windows and Unix, I'm finding a mac a bit of a mission!
    Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
    Thank you in advance!
      Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Welcome to discussions apple freak,
    You can do what Gnarlodious suggested, and it will work perfectly fine, But you should try out the dock. At default it is located at bottom of the screen (though it can be moved to either side), you can put applications there, folders, and basically anything that it will let you drag onto it. You do not need to create a short cut, or alias (basically the same thing). To place something on your dock simply drag it's icon, and let it drop on the dock. You can also set the dock to hide when your mouse is not over it, and to magnify when you mouse is over it. This is also where documents that are minimized are stored until you open them again. You may already know all (or some) of this, but if you haven't yet tried working with the dock I suggest you try it.

  • Creating a Shortcut on a Mac Desktop

    Hi everyone. I'm sure this has a very simple answer, but me being a newbie to using a
    Mac computer, I need some help.  I've set up a server for my home network with a
    Static IP of 192.168.2.10 .
    It was simple to create shortcuts for my computer and my sister's, because I've used
    Microsoft since it was DOS, and my sister's is Windows XP.  I simply created a shortcut
    and then typed in the network address, it being "\\192.168.2.10\Music" in Windows.
    But my mom has a Mac, and I need to create an alias (I think it's called) that would lead
    to the server from it.  I've searched all through the internet, and all I can find is something
    to the effect of this:
    1. Launch your Finder and look for the program that you want to create the alias for.
    2. Highlight this file and select "Make Alias".
    3. Drag the Alias to the desktop.
    My problem is that there is not an icon displayed that links to the server.
    Is there some kind of Properties box where I can manually enter the network path?

    Hi,
    First off, putting stuff (links/aliases, files, folders) on a Mac Desktop is not good practice, because it leads to some extra work on the CPU, since the Desktop is a folder like others, OS X will index all its content every time your Mom starts her Mac.
    This said, the best way to make an alias easy to use is to place it in the Dock via drag-n-drop, not on the Desktop. If placed in the Dock, your alias will always be within reach. All you have to do is locate the server folder you want to share in the Finder, and drag it to rightmost part of the Dock, where there are already some folders such as Applications, Documents, Downloads, etc...
    Alternately, you can also create a new Shared item in the left pane of your main Finder window. In the Finder preferences, you can also choose to show all connected servers on the Desktop, which can come in handy too.
    You may have to restart the Finder (or reboot the Mac, or just log out and back in) for the latter to take effect.
    Oh, I almost forgot: you can also copy and paste the folder in question in the Desktop folder (left pane in the Finder main window), and it'll appear on the Desktop itself.

  • How can I create a shortcut to launch an external application?

    Hello, I'm developing app in Swing where I want to create a shortcut for any external application, I'm able to get the .exe path, and an icon path (in .png format), is there a way to create a "shortcut" or button and assign the icon and the .exe path to run it? This is what I have to get the .exe path:
    Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("\"" + jTextField2.getText() + "\"");
    Where jTextField takes the value from a JFileChooser value, doing the same for the icon, then I could do this for a button to assign the icon:
    ImageIcon img1 = new ImageIcon("C:\\image.png");
    jButton7.setSize(64, 64);
    jButton7.setIcon(img1);
    But I havent' found any way to make the button (or any kind of shortcut) to execute the program, I could go and create a method to do it on click or ActionPerformed, but the idea is to do all this when I finish the create the shortcut, I hope you can understand me, I'm kinda confused, so far, I can launch the app but I want to create a new button/shortcut everytime I need to add an external app, thanks in advanced!!!

  • Running a java class from a windows shortcut?

    I am currently running a program I have written from a batch file for which I have created a shortcut. I have recently however modified my shortcut to include a variable that i pass to the main method in the program through the batch file - all this works fine.
    It did however get me thinking - why can't I do away with the batch file??
    Below is the batch file code that loads my software:
    Echo Off
    CLS
    SET CLASSPATH=.;"C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin"
    SET Path="C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin"
    C:
    CD\
    CD "Program Files\My App"
    start "My App" javaw My_App %1
    And the two shortcut strings that call the batch file:
    "C:\Program Files\My App\My_App.bat" var1
    "C:\Program Files\My App\My_App.bat" var2
    What I have been trying to do however, is do all of the above from the shortcut
    I have added the following code to a shortcut:
    Target:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe /c SET CLASSPATH=.;"C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin" && SET Path="C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin" && start javaw "My App" My_App
    Start In:
    "C:\Program Files\My App"
    All of the relevant paths are set correctly, and it calls the main java class file from the directory from where it resides, but I get a popup error message stating:
    Java Virtual Machine
    Error: Could not fing Java 2 Runtime Environment.
    Has anybody got any ideas on how to fix this please??

    Either I'm misunderstanding, or ?
    You don't need to set classpath if all you need for a classpath is the directory that contains the classfile - the Start in combined with -cp . // that's -cp followed by a periodsets the classpath to that value, and Windows will create a fully qualified path to javaw.
    You entries in the shortcut shouldn't have to be any more than what I typed.

  • Can't resize firefox so i can drag and drop to create a shortcut

    I can't make my Firefox page smaller so I can drag and drop a web site to create a shortcut. I am using windows 7. I have no grippe when i point in the lower right corner. When I use zoom the page itself re sizes but not the window. I just need to see a little of my desktop so I can create a shortcut.

    Could it be, you are in full-screen mode? Press F11 to check it: if you are indeed in the fulöl-screen mode, the FX window will resize and you should be able to grp the lower right corner for resizing.
    Let us know if it helped.

  • Run java program in task bar and create a shortcut

    Hi all,
    Do you have any idea about how to run a Java task in taskbar on windows. I am writing a application in Java and it needs to monitor mouse movements. I need to collect the file paths it selects and then drag and drop on Shortcut Icon on Desktop which finally triggers the actual GUI application written in Java where again these files are fed as input. If you have any Idea or suggessions about how to do this.
    Thanks,
    Regards,
    Ravikiran

    Ok..
    To create a shortcut on your desktop w2k/xp:
    1. right click on desktop, select new: Shortcut
    2. in "Type location of item" type:
       "javaw -classpath C:\ebjava\ DragTest"
       (Replace c:\ebjava\ with location of your Java app and DragTest with name of your app)
    3. Click next, and enter a name for your shortcut and click finishFor your Java app.. do something like this.
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class DragTest extends JFrame {
       JTextArea area;
       public DragTest () {
          area = new JTextArea();
          getContentPane().add(area, "Center");
          setBounds(0, 0, 400, 400);
          setDefaultCloseOperation(EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
       public void append(String s) {
          area.append(s);
       public static void main(String[] args) {
          DragTest test  = new DragTest();
          test.setVisible(true);
          if(args.length > 0) {
             for(int i = 0; i < args.length; i++) {
                test.append(args);
    test.append("\n");
    else {
    test.append("No args were supplied");
    When you drag files, or other shortcuts onto your shortcut the app will start and the full file name (including full path) will show up as a string argument. This is the best you're going to get.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can't create panel shortcuts in InD CS6?

    Hi all,
    I recently installed InDesign 6 on my laptop, which is running Windows 8. I'm currently working on a file, and when I go to the F11 panel to create a new style it won't let me create a shortcut for the style. I've tried ctrl+ and num+ and all I get is the little bell sound windows gives you when it won't let you do something! I'm a typesetter so I neeeeeed my shortcuts!
    Any help much appreciated.
    Thank you!
    Kate
    Oh and ps I already tried trashing my preferences and that didn't help. I suspect it's something to do with my laptop rather than InD.

    @Kate – did you try to create (or use) your shortcuts with an additional keyboard that has a number pad?
    I think you cannot access keyboard shortcuts for styles with a standard laptop without a number pad. I'm not on Windows, but this is the case with my MacBook Pro.

  • Create a shortcut in Java

    I need to make a shortcut for a MS-DOS program(bat file) and put it on the desktop. How to do it in Java? Is it possible?

    I take it this is to be used on the Windows platform.
    One solution is to use the shortcut.exe from the Windows Resource Kit - it is fairly easy to find the tool using http://www.google.com/. This utility enables you to create a lnk-file for the desktop.
    Next you make a batch file like this - my own install.bat only works on Win NT / 2K (but this you can refine for Win 9x):
    @Echo off
    shortcut -f -s -t MyProg.exe -d . -n "My Program" -i myicon.ico -l
    if exist "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop" copy "My Program.lnk" "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop"The batch file creates a shortcut and copies it to the desktop on a Windows NT / 2K machine.
    Finally you start up the batch file from within you java program:
