Created a compound clip as external HD unplugged?

Hello,
I wanted to make an entire video black and white so I created a compound clip to see what it looked like. I created it and as it began rendering, my external HD unplugged accidentally.
When I re-openeded Final Cut, it said that the files were corrupted and needed to go to the backup to restore. After I clicked continue, it said the project file was missing one of two clips (The entire video was about 30 clips). The compound clip was now a missing event and there was no way of breaking it apart. I tried 'open in timeline', the break apart clip is not selectedable, and the created compund clip is missing. The event has all the files and they're all ok, inside the compound clip are all my files, I just want to find a way to release them.
Is there any way to do that?
I'm running FCPX 10.0.8 on OS X 10.8.3

Never run into this so I'm doing some guessing. With FCP closed and in the Finder, look in your project folder; in the Backups folder, is there a file with a time stamp that's earlier than the time of the disconnect?
If there is, move the file with the time stamp to the directory level of  CurrentVersion and then hide the CurrentVersion file in a temp folder. Rename it CurrentVersion.fcpproject and reopen FCP.

  • Syncing audio in Final Cut Pro X doesn't create a compound clip

I just had a quick question that hopefully someone can help me with. I was shooting some video with my Canon t3i the other day, and I record audio into a Zoom H1. I imported all of my audio and video into Final Cut Pro X and I wanted to syncronize the clips, so I chose the video and the correct audio to go with it, and I right clicked them, and chose syncronize clips.
Now, my question. On every example I've seen of this, syncronizing two clips creates a compound clip which would be great, but when I choose syncronize clip, it just creates a new clip of the video with both audio files apart of the video. It's not a compound clip at all, it's just a video file with two audio channels, one with the cameras audio, the other with the Zoom H1 audio. When I go to shut off the cameras audio channel and just leave the Zoom H1 audio, my video starts to skip and just goes black, yet the audio plays fine...
I guess I'm just looking for help, is there something wrong that I am doing when I am trying to sync these clips? Are there certain file settings that I should have? My video is recorded in 1080p with 24fps, the audio is recorded in WAV format. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

  • What's the difference between creating a Compound Clip vs. a New Storyline?

If I select two appended clips in FCP X, and right-click, I can choose "New Compound Clip", or I can choose "Create Storyline".
How are these two functions different, and in which instance would one be better than another?

They're two quite different things. A compound clip is a closed container. You have to open it in the timeline to add media to it. A storyline is a a container that behaves pretty much like the primary storyline. It's magnetic, you can append to it, insert to it, overwrite to it, add gap clips, move clips around, add transitions, do all these editing functions in the same timeline as the primary storyline.

  • How to Create a Generic Compound Clip?

Sometimes, when I create a Compound Clip, a generic "compound clip" is created - i.e. it is not given the option to be named, thus does not become an Event.
Other times, seemingly doing the same thing, I am forced to give the new clip a name, which then becomes an Event.   It seems hit and miss -- sometimes I am asked to name them, sometimes not.
The problem is, that in reusing elements from previous episodes, when editing the named Compound Clip, the Event is edited, and the older episodes are affected.
My question:  How can I choose to create non-named, non-event Compound Clips?
    Thanks,
    Geoff

Thanks Tom.  I am not aware of doing anything different between the two results.  I simply select a bunch of clips, then right-click "New Compound Clip...".  Sometimes it just does it, other times I get a dialog asking me to give it a name and choose the Event folder.
Perhaps I am incorrect, but I have done this for a long time, and never noticed what I am doing differently.  Today, I am unable to reproduce the 'generic' compound clip.
Sorry I can't at this stage be more precise, but I admit that I must be doing something different to get the different results.   I do have clips in my project that are simply called 'Compound Clip', and they do not belong in any Event (clicking on 'Reveal in Event Browser' does nothing).  This is what I prefer.

  • How do I share a compound clip between projects?...

    Hello everyone,
I have created a 10 second intro/title graphic clip in Motion and published it to FCPX. I have added this generator sequence to a project's timeline in FCPX. I then added a lower third title set. I have edited my text (font, style, etc) of my lower third text to where I want it. I then created a compound clip of the two parts (title generator and the lower third text element).
Now that it is dialed in, I need to be able to use it as a template for a series of videos I am working on. I can't seem to find a way to save it and make it availible to drop into other project sequences. I have tried to make a favourite out of the clip, I tried to copy and paste between projects (and into a new event)... nothing works fo rme.
    What am I missing?
Any help is appreciated, thank you,
    Shea A.J. Comfort

    Hi Andy
    Thank you for the advice.
I tried your method but there definitely seems to be a fault or glitch in my software.  If I highlight a number of connected clips and audio tracks the program will not copy and paste them into the newly created compound clip in my event library.
I therefore decided to do it the slow ay and copy each individual item.  This worked fine until I came to the final audio track.  No matter how many times I copy this track Final Cut refuses to do this.  It always comes up with the previous item I copied.  I have retried this and it will copy all the items except one.  As you would expect I have done a fair amount of work on this track in the form of equyalisation, a comnpression filter and numerous keyframes on the level to come out with a mix that I am happy with.  I cannot however move it from the original project.
I find this totally unacceptable and consider the software to be unfit for purpose as a result.  Unfortunately the apple terms and conditions state that all purchases are final and I have no recourse upon them for the fact that it does not work.
I cannot see how an update will fix a problem with my software that is not universal to all users.  I believe that I can reinstall it without being charged again but am hesitant to do this for fear of losing the large amount of work that I have put into the project.
My only hope now is to ring the premium rate number for customer support in the unlikely hope that it can be solved this way.

  • Reusing Compound Clips from a Project

I'm working on an opening sequence that will be used in several projects.  I know that I can create a Compound Clip in the events library and put my clips there, but I can't use FCPX's transitions in it.  Is there a way that I can duplicate a compound clip from one project into another?  Besides copy and paste, that is, in a fashion that when I update the original it also updates the projects that reference it.

I know that I can create a Compound Clip in the events library and put my clips there, but I can't use FCPX's transitions in it.
Not sure why you think this but you definitely can create transitions inside compound clips that are in Events. They should act much like any other Compound Clips (though there are a few differences, one is no Auditions).
If you are thinking that you can't use a transition on a compound clip, then you need to remember that you first have to provide enough media for the transition -- either let FCPX do it by using "full overlap" in the preferences, or trim back the compound clip once placed in the timeline if using "available media."
Is there a way that I can duplicate a compound clip from one project into another?  Besides copy and paste, that is,
That is the only way to do it -- copypaste.
in a fashion that when I update the original it also updates the projects that reference it.
Currently there doesn't exist any entity in FCPX that behaves like this. Each time you place something in a project, it becomes a separate "instance" and is no longer connected to the original clip/compound clip you copied it from, whether from an Event or another Project. It would be nice to have that option (e.g., a checkbox that makes a compound clip in an Event "Dynamically Update" copies wherever it exists in projects), but that would be a new feature. Use Feedback to request it!

  • Audio level different in compound clip

Experiening an odd audio behaviour. I have created a compound clip and them dropped in interview into it. After that I place a compressor on the interview audio and set it to agerage at -20db. Once I them place the conpound clip onto a project the audio level in the peoject drops by -5db. I need to bump the project audio up +5db to get it back the agerage -20db it is in the compound clip. I have tried this on 2 systems with the same exact results.
Is this the way it is supposed to behave? And if so why? Seems to me the audio level should stay consistant from the compound clip to the project.
    Mike

That's odd. When you change the compound should update. Bring the compound clip into the project. Double click the clip to open its component clips. Make any change that's easily reversed – say, disable a clip (V). Close the project. Create a new empty project. Bring the compound to the new project. The disabled clip should not be visible.

  • Compound clips showing as missing events

I started a project on Macpro tower, then copied that project with all it's events and media to a portable hard drive to work on it with my Macbook Pro.  I did not import anything into the event for this project while working on the Macbook, but I did create some compound clips.  After working on the Macbook, plugged the portable drive into my Macpro tower and copied the project back to the hard drive in the Mac Pro.  I performed the copy via drag and drop withinn Final Cut Pro X. I then began to work on the project.  I did not re-copy the events and clips back to the Mac Pro tower, because they are all there already.
Now, I find that when I eject the portable drive from the Mac Pro tower, the compound clips show up as a missing event, even though the clips within those compound clips are in the current project.  I've tried to re-link the media, but there doesn't seem to be a way to re-link the compound clip.  I could just trash the new project, but I've done some work on it that I don't want to lose.  Any help would be appreciated.

now I know to re-import everything back even if nothing has really changed.
I am glad you got it working. But something did change. You created compound clips in the Event Library when you added them to your project on the MBPro. When you opened the project on your tower there were no compound clips in the event library without the portable drive connected. Once you copied the new events onto the tower event library FCP was happy and all you need to do is replace the old compounds in the timeline with the new ones.

  • Is it possible to move/resize individual objects in Compound Clipping Path in Illustrator?

    Hi,
I have created a Compound Clipping Path in Adobe Illustrator, and wonder if there is a way of moving/resizing individual objects in this path that create the mask? At the moment when I try to change just one object it changes them all.
Essentially I am try to make fine adjustments to the mask.
Thanks in advance for any help,
    Nick

Adobe updated masks in CS4, which has made to editing inidividual contents within masks more difficult, especially more complex masks (eg: nested)
When you select a mask now you select the mask and the contents. 5 ways to help you select the elements within the mask:
To get into the contents to edit them use the "Edit Contents" button (the 2nd one in the top left).
Flip down your layers palette triangles, to try and make selections there
Individually select items with the hollow arrow tool or group select tool, and hide them, then unhide to have the sum of the elements selected.
Save back to CS3 and work in CS3
Isolation Mode (though that mode is preferred disabled by many users)
Be careful as if you ever release a mask, this can entirely mess up your layeringorder on occasion, and undo won't help. Save before releasing a mask, sometimes you can undo, sometimes undo will not be abel to reconstruct you layer order.

  • Compound clip with now sequence symbol

I moved a fcp7 project to fcpx using 7 to X.   Nested sequences were created as compound clips in fcpx, but they looked a bit different from the compound clips, they had no sequence symbol next to the name.  Also, double clicking them did not open them, but I could open them by right clicking and using open in timeline command.  One of the compound clips did not show any video, but if i did "open in timeline" command it would open the correct video, but with hash tag lines.
One of the compound clips did not show any video, but if i did "open in timeline" command it would open the correct video, but with hash tag lines.
is there an explanation for this?   Thanks

The hash lines usually indicate portions of a nested sequence that are outside the portion used inside a sequence in the legacy version.

  • How do I store a compound clip for later use or another project?

I created a compound clip, then lifted it from story line and disabled it, its darkened (invisible doesnt play in the viewer),
however its space runs as black empty frames when I play over it.
I want to do 2 things:
I wanted the footage proceeding it to shift in left to fill that black void and play, as the compound clip is "hidden". Is this possible?
I also wanted to save that compound clip for use later in this project and possibly in another project, can I save it out as a separate clip set?

I think I got it, lift the compound clip from storyline by right clicking and choosing "lift from storyline",
drag the compound clip left or right out of its original position, select the grey slate where it used to be in the time line,  and hit delete. the clips to the right now shift left to fill its void.
and the compound clip is automatically available in the event library folder its grouped clips originated from but now shown as a compound clip once you create that compound clip..

  • Compound Clip Problem in Final Cut Pro X

I've posted most of the details within the video, explaining the issue. Basically, I'm using a green screen and transitioning pictures behind me on screen. I'm also singing in the video, so I need my lips to match up to the audio in the background. Before I create the compound clip (to fix the black background issue), the timing is perfect. But once I create the compound clip, the timing is off and I can't seem to extend the trasition or figure out a way to get my lips back in sync.
The exact issue is shown in the video below

Look at a video called finalcut pro X tips and tricks on YouTube  it shows how to fix your issue.

  • Question on compound clips

The new behavior of compound clips starting in 10.0.6 does not work for me as I thought I understood it. I added a still clip to the timeline and attached a second still clip to it. I then created a compound clip which was fine. I then added a depth of field blur mask effect to the compound clip in the timeline. The compound clip in the event brouser did not change. I added another instance of the compound clip from the brouser to the timeline and it was the original ie no blur. I then added an aged paper effect to the second instance of the compound clip and the first one did not update to reflect that effect. Again the brouser compound clip remained the original. Do I totally not understand what is supposed to happen or am I doing something wrong? I do see the reference new parent clip in the clip menu when I select the compound clip in the timeline but have not tried it.

Both should change, as they are locked together, unless you use the Create New Parent command, then you get a duplicate of the original CC.
First, try quitting and relaunching FCP X, see of that helps.
If not, get the free "Preference Manager" from Digital Rebellion (dot com) and use it to quickly and safely trash FCP X's pref files.  See if that helps.
If that doesn't help, move the Final Cut Pro app from the Applications folder to the Trash (your Projects and Events will be safe, don't worry).  Then launch the App Store, to the Purchases section, click "Install" to the right of Final Cut Pro X.  The reinstall make fix it.
But it should indeed work as you expect it to.

  • Compound clip did not include all my footage

So I am required to create a highlight reel for a game I filmed as a part of my sports film position and was to create a compound clip first. The clip was made and I keyworded all the highlights only to find I was missing 7 out of 8 goals during the game. A look back through my footage revealed that all of the goals were indeed in the original footage, but about 4 minutes (and one goal) of footage was missing from the compound clip. I was wondering if there was anyway to add footage to a compound clip since I've already completely keyworded what was there with highlights and it would be quite a setback if I had to start over.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

They probably use third-party apps because they need to make selective backups. Disk Utility can only make a complete full-disk restore, no picking and choosing. That doesn't mean they chose the third-party apps because Disk Utility is faulty. Let's wait a while and see if anyone really has something to contribute about this issue with Disk Utility.

  • Missing clips in compound clip

I have started editing a project and have created a compound clip within the event. I have gone back to it this evening and it is saying the whole of the compound clip is 'missing clips' even though the original footage/clips are there so no relink/reimport works.
Does anyone know how I can restore this? Or has anyone experienced the sameproblem, if so is it possible to get it back to a working state?
    Thanks!

Yes, you would think so. The work around is simple, but this shouldn't be happening.
The iMovie bugs site doesn't mention my issue, however I found the still image rendering issue interesting. I have hundreds of still images to incorporate into this project and those work arounds will be useful.
    Thanks!
(I'd still be interested in knowing if anyone else has experienced this missing clips issue.)
