Creating a film look in Final Cut Pro 3

I have finished editing my short in and some of the images are too harsh; please advise me on how I can get a more film like look. I shot the short on a Sony PD-150 and edited it on Final Cut Pro 3 using a G4 and running OS X. 2.6
A friend suggested using a filter like Magic Bullet, which doesn't work on OS X. 2.6. Someone else suggested rendering it in 30 frames per second but don't know how to do that in FCP.
G4   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

You're not going to be able to make magic happen with DV footage on final cut 3. Film has a generally softer and murkier look than video, so try bringing down the harsher higlights and desaturing colors somewhat. You're just going to have to play arround with the the filters and color corrector, and eyeball it on a broadcast monitor.
As far as frame rate is concerned, there's nothing you can do. DV is 29.97fps, film is 24fps. Simply changing the framerate (especially to 30) won't make it look more film like. 24 fps pulldown needs to happen in camera to achieve such an effect.
If you're interested in something like Magic Bullet (which you'll have far better luck with), you'll have to find someone who has it.
Honestly, my advice would be to worry about your film looking good more than worry about your film looking like film.

  • Plz give me work flow of film editing in Final Cut Pro..

    Hello Everyone...
I am basically a Avid Film Editor. Past 2 years I am using Final Cut Pro. Recently I finished Final Cut Pro Level 1 & T3. Right now I am working as a App. Support Engineer specially for Final Cut Pro .
I want know the work flow of film editing in Final Cut Pro. I am very interested to do film editing in FCP but the workflow from Avid to FCP its totally different.
I tried few options like using FCP & Cinema Tools..
    1. Captured 25fps clips and cofirmed to 24fps in cinematools.
    2. In FCP the Timeline frame rate is 24fps
But I am not able to understand..
    1. What is Database?
    2. Cant we capture 24fps in FCP?
    3. How to Synchronize captured clips with Cinema Tools database?
    4. How to link the captured clips in to Cinema Tools database?
    5. Where do I enter the KN Start & KN End?
    6. What about Pull List & Cut List?
Please give me the details of film technics in Final Cut Pro....
    Thanks in advance....

I knew I'd find this same post here. That makes three versions of trhe same list of questions.
Posting three times here implies you have posted this set of questions in many other FCP forums around the Net. If that is so, do us all the kindness of returning to all of them and closing them. Include the suggestions you have received and the solutions that were successful for you. That way your multiple threads will show up on search inquiries when other confused FCP newbies try to start complex film projects.
It's a bummer you cannot find these answers in the FCP manuals, I'm usre you looked there first. But, since we run on volunteers around here, it may be several days before someone with enough practical CinemaTools experience can stop by and handle them for you. Please have some patience.

  • How do you crete an "unrendered look" in Final Cut Pro 7?

    Hi guys,
Does anybody know how to crete an "unrendered look" in Final Cut Pro 7?
What video filter do you apply?
I'm trying to create a security Camera Look and I can't find the right filter.
    Any help ?
    Thanks.

Depending on the look you are looking for there really isn't one filter to do this it is more likely a combination of things.
    One approach:
Play with the color correction filters and composite modes with a duplicate clip on the layer above.
and if you want  noise try this:

In the Timeline position your Playhead at the starting position.
In the Viewport position the Shape Mask at the starting position.
In the Inspector click the Add Keyframe button.
Press Control-V to open the Animation Editor to see your keyframes.
Move the Playhead and the Shape Mask to a new position.
In the Inspector click the Add Keyframe button.
Continue adding keyframes until you have defined the Shape Mask’s movement.

  • Can I Change duration of a Film Burn in Final Cut Pro X

Is there a way to change the duration of a Film Burn (.mov) in Final Cut Pro X.  for example I have 10 second film burn (.mov), and I want that film burn to be 30 sec or more any way I can do this?
Currently I copy the Film Burn several times on the timelien to make it longer.
Note: The Film Burn is set at 10 seconds, I CAN NOT DRAG it to make it any longer.  Any Ideas would be great!

You could drag three instances into a timeline and then create a compound clip that you could use over and over again.

  • Creating 1080p Blu-Ray with Final Cut Pro 10.0.7?

The latest version of Final Cut Pro (Vers 10.0.7) seems to share to Blu-Ray disk only at 720p resolution (1280X720) - not 1080P (1920X1200).  I know you can always use Compressor to create a 1080p Blu-Ray, but is there any way to create a 1080p Blu-Ray disk directly with Final Cut Pro?  It seems to me I was able to do this with earlier versions of Final Cut Pro X.

If you do a 1080 project @24fps or 29.97fps, FCPX will output 1080 frame size using the Blu-Ray settings. If you use Share >BD for either 720 or 1080 @ 60fps, it will choose the 720 resolution.
I have no idea whether this was always the case.

  • Creating 5.1 Surround in Final Cut Pro

    Hi,
So I am tyring to figure out the best way to go about building a 5.1 mix to use in a film project that will be put on BluRay.
In my current rough cut in Final Cut Pro 7, I do not have my timeline setup as 5.1 yet since all the dialogue was recorded either in 2 Channel stereo or sometimes mono.  I have several spots in the film where I am adding ambient tracks and we also have lots of musical score/songs.  All of these are also 2 channel stereo currently.
My basic understanding on how to possibly achieve a 5.1 mix would be to duplicate all the stereo tracks that I intend to use as L/R and Ls/Rs (such as songs, ambience or score) and possibly change the dialogue track from 2 ch to mono and set that as the center channel.  But I am a bit lost on how to get anything from the LFE at that point.
I also thought about possibly bringing this project into FCPx and seeing if building the 5.1 might be easier there.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Ok, I do have STP and also have Logic Pro.  I have used Logic in the past to make my own music, but never for 5.1.
So in my research it seems like I need to setup a virtualized 5.1 in Sys Prefs as a new Midi Configuration.  I also found the following items that seem like  pretty good and inexpensive route to go:

  • How Do I Create A Photo Collage in Final Cut Pro X?

    Hi all,
I'm a total newbie with Final Cut Pro X.  I'm using it to edit aerial drone footage for real estate sales.
I have video from the outside of the houses, and I can edit that just fine.  What I want to do, though, is have a kind of photo collage/montage of photos of the interior of the houses somewhere in the videos.  But like I said, I'm totally new at this and have no idea how to do it.
If someone could explain how or point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!
    Karl

I put out a remake of the Photo Recall effect a few weeks ago called Photo Recall Enhanced (it adds a lot more features to the effect already available in FCPX.)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5I8Lo0tFdPU
(there's more info in the About section under the video.) There's no charge.
All you need to do is stack the images or video you want to collage on the sceen and add this Effect to each clip. You can set the Background Opacity to 0% to get rid of the "recall" effect and that will leave you with just the "photo" on the screen.  There's an onscreen control to help you position the image and other parameters for scaling and rotating (and all of these things can be keyframed for animation.

  • Looks like final cut pro does run and "runs well" on macbook

    http://www.creativemac.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=43717
"Contrary to the bizarre rumor, the MacBook can indeed run Final Cut Pro, and it can run it quite well, if these tests are any indication. For Final Cut Pro, we ran four individual tests to compare performance on a variety of functions and in both HD and SD. In most cases, the results were fairly close. The 13-inch MacBook beat the dual G5 in two of four tests, tied it in one and lost out by one second in another. All of the tests were rendering tests, which, of course, doesn't tell the whole story. But it does give a good indication of the power of a computer's CPU."

Final Cut Pro while it does run it is not supported to do so.
Please be aware also that the report only tested functionality that is not impacted by the GPU. For instance, the MacBook will more than likely fall flat on its face, comparitively, when faced with real time effects. Using FCP is not only about rendering and encoding speeds. There are other hours, day, weeks etc infornt of FCP that does not involve neither rendering or encoding.
It is a skewed report that does not taking into the account the actual "using" of FCP.
As a cheap alternative to an MBP for portability reasons… the MB will be fantastic.

  • 1080i/24p to Film Out in Final Cut Pro

A client of ours shot a project with the *Panasonic HVX-200* in 1080i/24p (not 1080i/24pa) and they are asking if they will have a problem with the footage when they output to film. They are using *Final Cut Studio 2* on an *8-core Mac Pro*.
I told them to use *Cinema Tools* to reverse telecine the 29.97 footage back to the native 24p and they shouldn't have problems. They said I was wrong and that frames would be lost in the process. (Which I know isn't how 3:2 pull-downs work) They also said that they did this before and the 1080i footage they got from the HVS-200 P2 cards and FS-100's were already in 24p format when transfered. Is there a way that this was possible or am I missing something here?
    Thanks!

You are right, they are wrong, very, very, very wrong. I'm going to copy and paste from another thread I just answered about this same issue:
I am the author of the FS-100 DVD guide, work with Focus Enhancements closely, have many consulting clients using this system, and have been using the HVX200/FS-100/FCP system since the HVX200 shipped, and a cert'd trainer.
As for FCP, here's the workflow. To start, make sure your HVX is set to 1080i/24PA. If it is set to 1080i/24P, you won't get 24p, you'll get 60i with the 24P effect. Just like on the DVX100. 24P results in a native 60i with the 24P effect, as 24PA has metadata that allows it to become progressive and 24P native.
In FCP, bring in your footage with the Log & Transfer window, assuming you're on FCP 6. Any pre-6 version was super buggy with P2 data. Make sure the "remove advanced pulldown" is selected and import your footage. Ignore the "Compressor" that is referred to in the clips info (which is all the metadata), it will not say 1080p24, it only refers to the compression engine handling the footage, not the actual compression of the clip.
In your project, delete any Sequences you have, in the FCP menu go to Easy Setup, and choose "DVCPRO HD - 1080pA24". Create a new Sequence and you're good to go. Simple as that.
If you go to look at "Item Properties" for these clips, look at the "Vid Rate" field, it will be 24p. The "Compressor" field refers to an engine and has nothing to do with the actual format of the clip, ignore it. The 1080p30 you see as the "Compressor" simply means that the QuickTime 1080p30 engine is being used, and is perfectly capable of driving native 1080p24 footage.
The lines you're seeing on 1080p24 are interlace lines, and are normal, as 1080p24 is, again, 60i with the 24p "effect". You have to record in, and edit in 1080pA24. There's a big difference.

  • Looking for Final Cut Pro Version 6

I'm looking to upgrade from FCP Version 5 to Version 6, but my G5 is pre-Intel. Anyone have suggestions on where to obtain FCP 6 besides just buying a new Intel G5? I would like to get a new G5, but the economy forced me to look at least upgrading as far as I can with my current G5, first.
    Thanks for any assistance!

First of all, a G5 computer uses a Motorola processor, not an Intel.
There's no such thing as an Intel G5.

  • Creating Blu-Ray DVD with Final Cut Pro and Adobe Encore

    Hi all,
I am one of many with troubles creating a blu-ray DVD using Mac software. Sounds like the best way to do this is to do all of the editing in Final cut and create the DVD in Adobe Encore. Is there a way to export to Adobe Encore or should I just create a .mov file and import that to Encore. That way I think I lose the HD quality. I read that I could compress to Blu-ray format in Compressor, but I can only find HD DVD which is different. When I select create a Blu-Ray disc, Compressor won't simply create the file on my computer...it wants the disc to create.
Maybe I am a little to new at this to fully understand, but why in the heck doesn't Apple get with the times and create a DVD authoring program that makes Blu-Ray?
Thanks for any help you can offer.

I have just completed my first blu-ray disc using FCP7 and Adobe encore. My workflow, once the timeline was complete, was to go to File>share>choose blu-ray as destination >export. The default encoding is H.264 along with an ac3 file for audio. It took 3 hours and 35 minutes to encode the 1hr 26 minute file.
Opening encore, confirming you settings for HD, and choosing file>import>as asset each of the files (separately, of course). Encore imports them, then under Timeline>create new, then drag the files to the timeline. CLick on the build button and you are there. I did not mention that my original render was Prores422, but that should not matter here. No trouble with burning the Verbatim 25Gb disc.
Encore will recognize that these files do not need re-encoding and burn the disc. It took 1 hour and 40 minutes to burn a 1 hour and 26 minute (17+ Gb) movie on an i7 iMac with an OWC 12x BD burner.
    Hope that helps

  • How do I create some black video in Final Cut Pro?

I am new to fcp having moved from premiere how do I create some black video in fcp please
    Thanks
    Derek

Drew's right - and another way is to go to the same "film strip" (generator) to the right bottom corner of the middle box (called the Viewer) and select "Matte" > "color". It is grey by default, but in the viewer under Control you can select black. This way of making black will not lay in audio tracks, only black on the V1 - video track, (unless you have select another video track.

  • Dvd created in final cut pro not working

I have created multiple Dvd's in Final Cut Pro X and never seem to have a problem. Yet with my most recent project I've run into a problem. The created Dvd's will not play on any of our dvd players, blue ray or regular player. The error message I am getting on some of them is "region not supported". But they will play on any Pc or Mac I insert them in. I burned the Dvd using the dvd function in Final Cut.
    Any advise?

For copy-protection reasons, DVDs (the video ones) have a regional "code" - for example, North America is region 1, and Europe is 2 (grosso modo). Computers for the most part ignore this, but common DVD players don't - so a region 1 player refuses to play region 2 discs, etc.
In old times, I remember that DVD drives that came with Macs were set to some region (presumably according to where they were bought), and there was a way to change it, but you were limited to some 5 changes, after which the drive would be locked at whatever "region" it was in. I don't remember how that region was changed, but it does look like the region associated with the DVD drive in your mac did indeed change, so as to make it different from your local one.

  • Final cut pro 7  -  Flashback effect "film style"

I want to create a Flashback effect in Final Cut Pro 7 the tutorial states double click the clip, go to filter in the viewer window, press slash to drop the film style video filters, this will bring up the gama, click on white defusion etc.   so not using keyboard short cuts much. My question is where do I find press the slash to drop down the film style video filters.?
    old -- dustin

Uhm...FCP doesn't have those built in...not that I'm aware of. The slash key doesn't activate any filter toggle that I'm aware of.
are you sure this is an FCP 7 tutorial? Not FCX?
