I have a problem:
I do some querying and need to get results in 2d-objectarray (creating a JTable later). Now I have this but I surely could use some better solution :)
Object[][] data = new Object [20][2];
int id = 0;
String name = "";
int index = 0;
while(rs.next())
   id = rs.getInt(1);
   name = rs.getString(2);
   data[index][0] = name;
   data[index][1] = id;
   index++;

Any ideas how to do dynamically this?You could iterate 2 times. In the first iteration you check how long data must be to hold all values, then you create data, and in the second iteration you assign values to data.

So, if you don't know how many arrays to create when you're writing the code, you wouldn't name them. You'd create an ArrayList (or some other collective data structure) and name that, and then put the 5 arrays into that structure.

Please help.........what should I do?You can use an associate data structure such as a HashMap. It stores pairs of values - key and item. The access on key is very fast and it will provide the corresponding item. In your case the key can be the array "name" in the form of a String, and the item can be the associated array.

At the statement having comment line I received the error ArrayStoreException. The JTable accepts the 2 D array for storing the info and I think the toArray() method is not working there and can't convert the ArrayList elements into an Array. Similarily, Vector Class is also not converting the elements into an array object and showing the same error only.
Please help me to convert it into an array object so that I can pass it into the JTable argument.

That isn't a jdbc problem but rather a collection problem.
You certainly can't convert a one dimensional collection into a two dimensional array automatically. And that is what you are creating with the while loop.
Since you know the column names you also know the inner array size so you can start by creating a statically sized string array (not collection) in the loop and add that to the outer collection. That might solve the problem.

Create a 2-dim array dynamically

I have had this problem here before but try one moore time :-)
This is the thing: We have a text-file from which we read. This textfile can be different from time to time. From this textfile we can catch numbers of columns and numbers of rows that a 2-dim array should have. The problem is how one can create this 2-dim array dynamically? We have a while-loop that the program runs inside already. Must one use the while-loop to solve this problem? Or can one solve this with only a for-loop? Hope you understand how I mean :-) Best regards

OK, I thought you want to read an array of the same size as the actual data in the file. You cannot read a 4x10 array if the file only contains data for a 3x5 array .
Is the array size determined by the data in the file or by some other calculation?
I would still read the entire file, then you can cut out a 2D subset using "array subset". This should not be a problem unless you have millions of array elements.

The actual problem is this.
The byte array already has some fixed values to it
and i need to append the values of the character array
to this byte array
ie
char chars[] = {'a','j','a','y'};
byte b[] = {

// I have to add the values from the array here
(byte) chars[0], (byte) chars[1]....
How can I add these values.? The size of the character array
can vary

This may seem trivial, but how do I create a dynamic array to store integers?
I tried Integer integerArray [] = new Integer (); but i get Cannot Resolve Symbol Error.
I am using Java 1.4.2 version.

An ArrrayList can store any object you wish not just String. All you need to specify when retrieving an object is the type of object you want.
For example, if you have an ArrayList of integers an you want to retrieve an integer from the list you would use:-
int myInt = (int)myArrayList.get(myIndex);Therefore if you want to store an arbitrary object foo in an ArrayList the code is thus:-
//replace foo with the object you are storing.
foo foobar = (foo)myArrayList.get(myIndex);There is a slight change with ArrayLists in Java 5 where you should declare the objects that should be stored in the list but hopefully the above helps you to understand that an ArrayList or any other Collection as it happens can store objects of your choosing.

Creating a dynamic array in Actionscript

I am wondering how I would create a dynamic array in Acionscript, i.e. one that utilizes fields for mapping data like this:
public var SMITH:Array = [
           {date:"29-Aug-05", close:45.87, profit:52},

           {date:"21-Aug-05", close:45.77, profit:22},
           {date:"25-Aug-05", close:46.06, profit:51},
but where you would just be reading in data without knowing what your data looks like. In other words, I'd like to take something like a database table with X number of columns and have Actionsctipt map each row to an item in my array. Something like this:
for each row in table
add {col1:value, col2:value, col3:value, ... colX:value} to Array
So I won't know "date" or "close" or whatever at runtime, I'll just have X number of items for each element in the array. How would this be done?
The reason I need this mapping feature is because I then want to map the table-like array as the data provider to charts, datagrids, etc.

Well, if you have the byte array already, you're probably going to have to either make the original array large enough to hold whatever you would put into it or create a new array when you know what you are going to add.
This seems pretty simple, so maybe I'm missing the point. But...
char chars[] = { ... };
byte bytes[] = new byte[<some other size> + chars.length];
for (int i = 0; i < chars.length; i++)
bytes[i + <offset>] = (byte)chars;
If you can't effectively figure out a static size for this array and you have to copy contents, look at System.arrayCopy() to possibly improve performance of the copy.

We have a table that holds metadata about files (hardcopy or softcopy files).
We expect we may need more columns in the table at some point and don't want to modify the table or the application.
So in order to do this I would like to create:
A table called TBL_FILE with the columns:
TBL_FILE_ID               NUMBER                (This will be the primary key)
TBL_FILE_NAME          VARCHAR2(1000) (This will be the name of the file)
A second table will be called TBL_FILE_META with the columns:
TBL_META_ID               NUMBER               (This will be the primary key)
TBL_FILE_ID               NUMBER                (This will be the forign key to the file table)
TBL_META_COLUMN     VARCHAR2(30)     (This is what the column name would be if it existed in TBL_FILE)
TBL_META_VALUE          VARCHAR2(1000) (This is the value that record and the 'would be' column)
So a person can have as much meta data on the file with out having to add columns to the table.
The problem is how can I allow users to add as much data as they like with out having to re develop the page.

however the TBL_META_VALUE column in the TBL_FILE_META will sometimes be a select list and other times a text box or number field.

Any idea's how I could accomplish this? Is there a better way of doing this?

Yes, you can do it. Updatable report/ Tabular Form query can be constructed from the Meta Data using PL/SQL Function Returning SQL Query . It will be a bit of coding in PL/SQL where you use the Meta Data and the Meta Data of the Meta Data to piece together your SELECT with the right APEX_ITEMs. It might have a performance penalty associated with it, but will not be a serious degradation.

I have a form which – based on the department that's selected from a drop-down box – will have different form fields/text boxes, etc, made available.

In the preOpen event of the second dropdown list you put something like (in formCalc):

How to create a dynamic RTF report which creates dynamic columns based on dynamic column selection from a table?

Suppose I have table, whose structure changes frequently on daily basis.
For eg. desc my_table gives you following column name on Day 1
SQL > desc my_table;
Output
Name
Age
Phone
On Day 2, two more columns are added, viz, Address and Salary.
SQL > desc my_table;
Output
Name
Age
Phone
Address
Salary
Now I want to create an Dynnamic RTF report which would fetch data from ALL columns from my_table on daily basis. For that I have defined a concurrent program with XML as output type and have attached a data template/data definition to it which takes in XML as input and gives final output of conc program in EXCEL layout. I am able to do this for constant number of columns, but dont know how to do it when the number of columns to be displayed changes dynamically.
For Day 1 my XML file should be like this.

I want to create one dynamic XML which should not be required to be changed if new columns are added in my_table. I dont know how to create this query and also create their corresponding elements below.
Make the RTF template dyanamic as in Day1 there must 3 columns in EXCEL output and on Day 2, 5 columns. I want to create a Dynamic RTF template which would show all the columns selected in Dynamic XML.I dont know how the RTF will create new XML tags and how it will know where to place it in the report. Means, I can create RTF template on Day 1, by loading XML data for 3 columns and placing 3 XML tags in template. But how will it create and place tags for new columns on Day 2?
Hope, you got my requirement, its a challenging one. Please let me know how I can implement the required solution using RTF dynamically without any manual intervention.

Is there any way to UPDATE the XML file attached to a Data Definition (XML Publisher > Data Definition) using a standard package or procedure call or may be an API from backend? I am creating an XML dynamically and I want to attach it to its Data Definition programmatically using SQL.
Please let me know if there is any oracle functionality to do this.
If not, please let me know the standard directories on application/database server where the XML files attached to Data Definitions are stored.
For eg, /$APPL_TOP/ar/1.0/sql or something.

How to create a dynamic hyperlink which point to a BLOB column

I am fighting with the issue for about 2 days.
My purpose is to use Oracle Report Builder to build a report of our employee directory which contains employee's information and also employee's picture. The requirement is that our report is going to generate a html file to our web server. By creating a dynamic hyperlink to the Employee's name in the report output file (the html file generated to our web server), it should then display the corresponding employee's picture which is a BLOB column stored in our oracle database.
I only can create the hyperlink for the employee's name if the link is static, like 'http://www.google.com
But from the Oracle Reports 10g Release2 (10.1.2), about the exmaple 1: Dynamic hyperlink, I refered the link

The link gave he following example shows a value for the Hyperlink property that specifies a link to a destination identified dynamically:

where :DEPTNO is a column value retrieved from the database at runtime.
I tried as the same way to want it dynamcially shows the column :EMP_PHTOT, which is one BLOB column, but it was failed.
Anyone knows how to implement this? Any inputs is appreciated!
