Creating custom mask shape

I want to create a custom mask shape different from the ones supplied in FCP2.
Ive been racking my brain on how to do this. I use CS3 Photoshop and Illustrator.
In illustrator I created the shape I want, a tight round cornered rectangle in black then sent to Photoshop. place it on a new layer (layer 2) and made the first layer transparent, but the outside of the frame is still visable when I rescale the file in FCP....what am I doing wrong?
Thanks in advance..

Hi Allister,
The mask you create in Photoshop needs to be either black and white or have an alpha channel.
When you import that into FCP you need to have
- background on track 1
- your mask on track 2
- foreground on track 3
then select your foreground and choose composite mode> travelling matte alpha if you want to key where your alpha is or travelling matte luma if your image is black and white.
If you're sizing your mask down you may need to crop your foreground so you don't get edges.

  • ----- Is it possible to create this mask shape effect in FCP X?

I've been playing around with some masks in FCP X, but I cannot figure out how to create this effect..is it possible?
I am interested in creating a mask shape where I can use it to identify something on the screen inside the shape with the surrounding area darker.
In FCP 6/7, I used to just add a slug on top of the clip, add a mask shape, tweak it, invert it and lower the opacity.
    Any thoughts?
    Thank you.

in FCPX no masks nor additional tracks needed:
    select the clip
in the Info board, select the Color Correction
    there's a built-in Mask tool - select that
switch on the Color Board, here comes the trick: …
you are allowed to select WHERE the correction is applied: inside or outside the mask
    (in my German interface Innen/Außen)
    drag down the general exposure
there are handles to define size, shape, position
you can drag the outer circle (no handles) to define blurr gradient
you can even animate that highlight by key-framing it ....
with the same tool, you can e.g. apply super-fast some simple 'grading' such a 'CSI Miami-style Blue Sky':

  • Convert shape created from masks into it's own shape or mask?

    Hi everyone.
I've created a shape layer (an ellipse) and used a couple different masks to create a more unique shape. Now, I'd like to extrude that shape into 3D, but as you may know, the ray-tracer doesn't support masks.
So I'm wondering, how would you convert this new shape into an actual shape that uses no masks? I'd like it to be it's own shape or at least have a path that resembles he new shape I created from the shape layer and those masks.
Any idea how to do this? Thanks.

I'd like to extrude these shapes.

Now I know these are made from solids, but the original is an ellipse mask with some other masks drawn over it.
I was able to make these same half rings with a shape layer and some masks. I'd ultimately like to make that shape a shape layer of its own with no masks so that I can extrude it in 3D.
I wish there was some sort of magic wand tool that would let me select the shape, save the selection as a path, then use that... man I really have to go into a whole nother program to do this? Geeze.
    Thanks guys.

  • How can I disable the "create custom shape" window?

When I'm using the custom shape tool in CS6, it will often bring up a new window labeled "create custom shape". It's really disruptive and I'd like to know how I can disable it to prevent it from poping up.

OK I can now get the dialog window to pop up with a single click in a document with my mouse or intuos tablet.   I had never seen that popup. Under normal conditions with the mouse I use and my old Intuos 2 now replaced with an Intuos 5 with default sensitivity setting I never saw that popup.  Now that I know it exists and how to get it I can pop it up.  Try changing your Wacom feel perhaps your getting extra single clicks.

  • Creating customized shapes

    Hello,
I'm quite new in Flex and I wanted to try to build an
    application using Flex.
I would like to know if there is any possibility to create
customized shapes with Flex for example shapes like clouds and
arrows and then use these shapes in the web based application with
    a simple drag and drop.
Thanks in advance for your help
    Erjona!

    Hi,
I'm new to flex too but I think this you would have to make
the shapes in flash and apply them as skins in flex. You can get
the flash flex template extensions here

  • How do you create a custom brush "shape"?

I want to create an effect of a large paintbrush moving across the screen.
Is there any way to create a custom brush "shape" to do this using the Paint tools? I can't find anything obvious in the help on how to do this.
    Thx
    Kevin

Or, if you have Trapcode Particular, define your shape as a custom particle. The painting could then be controlled by animating the emitter position or defining a motion path by ways of a 3D light as an helper item.

    Hi sz,
Although the Numbers User Guide (which you should find in the iWork 08 folder in your Applications folder) does say, "You can also drag an image to mask a shape with an image," I didn't have any success when trying to do so.
The best I was able to do was to place the pie chart in front of or behind a tomato image, then set the transparency of whichever was in front to allow the other to show through. Although I'm not really happy with the result, here's a sample, with the chart in front. The chart's Fill has been set to None, and the opacity of the 'slice' colours has been set to 30%. The colours used for the slices are shown in the chart's legend.
You might achieve an improved result by experimenting with the colours and opacity settings.

  • Problems with creating a mask in AE 4.1

    Hi all,
Yes, I'm using After Effects 4.1... not CS4... that's version 4.1 from 13 years ago.
I'm having a problem creating a simple mask and I can see from a more current AECS5 tutorial that creating a mask on a layer is similar to creating one in AE4 based on a comparison to an old AE4 tutorial.  I've read instructional material and it seems simple enough, but for some reason its not working for me... I know I'm doing something wrong.  I'm an advanced Photoshop user and I know the concept of layer masks and how to create them.
I create the mask on a layer and I can see and adjust the bezier points to adjust the shape of the mask... adjusting the shape of the mask by the bezier points is a little tricky since it stretches in both directions when you grab a single point, but that's okay,
But no matter which mask mode I try, Add, Subtract, Intersect, Lighten, Darken or Difference, it is not masking the layer that it is attached to even when I preview the timeline.
I don't want to just create a color layer on top of the layer I want masked to simulate a mask (which I can otherwise do) because I want to stack layers with masks and have the unmasked parts showing through (like in Photoshop), without rendering separate layers and re-importing them with blue screening or black screening... I should just be able to mask the parts that I don't want to show up on each layer and only have the unmasked parts of each layer show through each other for my final render.
    Thanks for any input,
    digi

Thanks for writing back Dave and Rick,
I think there is something in what Dave said about opening a new layer window, but it still isn't working right.  Please see the screenshot of two full project windows below.
One thing that could be giving me problems is my layer content... it is a numbers layer attached to a solid layer, as you can see.
In the comp window at the top of each screenshot below, you can see the bezier points from my original mask that I created by clicking on 'Shape' next to 'Mask' on the left in the timeline window after selecting 'Layer>Mask>New Mask'... but I can see that this isn't the right way to do it because (1) it isn't masking, it only shows bezier points. (2) When I try to adjust those bezier points in the comp window it only stretches the numbers. And (3) when I'm in the comp window, I don't have access to the layer shape square and oval tools... they are grayed-out.
So in the layer window after double-clicking on my numbers layer, in screen #2 below, you can see that it isn't showing anything... just black, but you can see the bezier points from my original masking attempt that also show up in the comp window.  But in that layer window I do have the square and oval tools available to me and you can see that I tried creating a new experiment with a triangle mask, but that only shows bezier points and no masking effect.  When I close that window, as Dave said, after making the new triangle mask, it only broadens out my original mask besizer points in the comp window to encompass both masks now, but does not reflect either masks actual shape, nor is it actually masking anything.
Let me know what you think.
    Thanks again,
    digi

  • Automatically create clipping masks

    Hello,
I was watching this amazing video -
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebVFXphyJqw
    - and I noticed, that flash has a feature, that seems to automatically create clipping masks.
She starts using these at 1:45. She draws blue paths and applies gradients to shapes that use the blue paths but also underlying art.
I haven't figured out a quick way in illustrator to do it like this. (Draw path - divide - livepaint - new fill can produce such results, but thats too complicated for quick shading...)
Also there is a feature right at the beginning, where she erases segments of circular paths. They are exactly cut at the intersection points. Of course there are scissors and snapping in AI, but that method flash seems to offer looks much more convenient.
Maybe those functions are burrowed in some side menus in AI... I mean, I have Flash CS6, but I feel much more comfortable in AI.
If you know these features, especially the auto clipping mask thing, please tell me
    -Andrej

Wow, the draw inside mode was also new to me. So much to learn!
It's a pity that it does not create merged clipping groups when having two objects selected simultaneously upon entering drawing inside mode.
I have not figured out, how to use the shapebuilder tool with single paths yet.
But I did try out the Pathfinder's outline operation. It seems to give me the seperated strokes I demanded.
Thanks for your help again Monika.

  • Creating a mask within a drop zone

    Hey,
Does anyone know if it is even possible to create a mask within a drop zone or the video assets so I can essentially cropping off the black bars in my 4:3 Letterbox video. Was shot on the Panasonic DVX100.
    Chris

    Hey,
I'm creating my chapter/scene selection index/menu and I am wanting to find a way to re-shape the mask so I can reveal more of a still on the drop zone. The way the mask is setup is it is cropping off too much of my frame. Whenever I adjust the media handles all that does is change the size of the drop zone which isn't what I want to do. I just want to drag more of the frame over.
Any idea how to do this? The manual does not help and I am trying to Google to find my answer. No luck so far.

  • Error message: Could not parse mask shape on clipboard

can anyone tell me why when I open a new composition, i get an error message that says, "After Effects error: could not parse mask shape on clipboard" then i click ok...brings me to a new composition, then i try to import an image and it gives me the same message only it doesnt import the image? Im brand new at this and trying to teach myself, any help woould be much appreciated

This is the second time that you've posted the same question in less than half an hour. Don't double-post. Be patient. You can't expect an instantaneous response on a user-to-user forum.
You get this message under various circumstances, both when you create a new composition and when you try to import a file?
    What operating system?
What version of After Effects? If After Effects CS5, have you installed the After Effects CS5 (10.0.1) update?
Has this happened always, or did it just start recently? If it just started recently, what changed right before the problem arose?

  • Masking (shape tools) are missing

    Dear fellow Premiere Pro users,
I don't have the shape tools on any of the effects on my effect controls, anybody know why?
or are there any other methods to create a mask? Need your help!
    My version is v7.2.2
    Thanks,
    Tevin

I have to agree that Adobe is a bit remiss in advising when a CC version is just updates and backwardly compatible or a version "upgrade".
It can cause issues either way in my opinion.
    I am really cautious.
eg. I have not upgraded to 8.2x for this very reason.(Too many projects unfinished in the pipeline.) . I dont know which way it rolls out version wise.

  • I am trying to create a polygon shape and place an image inside of it.

I am trying to create a polygon shape and place an image inside of it similar to this: http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/1f/47/51/1f4751aeb7c30099e4caf61393990fca.jpg
How do I go about doing it? Thanks!

    Hi
You would need to design the image outside of Muse using any image editor like photoshop , where apply polygon frame on top of the image and area outside shape should match the color of the image of page, then insert the image on Muse page, it would be same effect. Currently we cannot create any shape in Muse , but you can try some customization using custom code.

  • Help creating a mask!

Hi I'm new to FCP. I am trying to create a mask for a video I have imported. Here's the circumstances. I need to create a mask around the torso of an individual. We are creating video to be placed on plexiglass cut to the shape of a human being. The video will be projected onto the plexiglass thus creating the illusion there is a live person giving a presentation.
I need a mask of the torso so it can be imposed over the diecut plexiglass without any bleeding off of the edge of the plexiglass and onto the wall, viewer or whatever.
I can't seem to be able to create the mask successfully. I am trying to import a grayscale Photoshop tiff file (Black & White) and it doesn't seem to be working when I use the Image Mask filter.
    Can anyone please help me.
    Thanks in advance.

Never mind I figured it out. Trial and error is a wonderful thing.

  • How to create custom dingbats?

Is there a way to create custom dingbats (using some images in Photoshop or illustrator) e use them like characters font?

Since fonts are drawn the same way you would draw a shape in Illustrator (vector path outlines), you could draw whatever design you want and save it for reuse.
That does make it more difficult to use inline with text since you would have to place an anchored picture box in your text so the image would move with it.
You could use the free open source FontForge to drop your Illustrator path into a key position and save the font. It would have only one glyph (like assigned to the letter m), and would produce your dingbat when you press that key.
