Creating standby database from ASM production database in standard edition

Hi,
I am using oracle 10g release 2 standard edition. I recently created a database instance and wanted to create a standby database instance. After sorting out how to achieve this without managed standby and data guard I finally got it working and the shipped archive logs are applied and working well on the standby database.
Now I am thinking of re-creating my production database and using ASM for storage managment. By doing this can a standby database still be created from a primary database using ASM? I want to be sure I can before I commit to using ASM for the production instance and manually creating a standby database from that instance.
Note: I am using standard edition not enterprise edition.

Hi
For Oracle SE standby, you can visit www.anbultechnologies.co.uk , they have a brilliant product name DRMC which is Automatic disaster recovery solution with automatic failover in case primary goes down due to any reason.
We are using this product for more than 2 years and it works like a dream using Oracle Standard Edition. We have depolyed more databases and Standby solution within the prices of 2 EE edition licenses.
You can give ma try as well.

  • Move datafile from asm datafile database to non asm database

    Hi Nice morning all DBA Guys, I want move datafile from asm database datafile to non asm configurated database. Hoe to move this?
    Datafiles like this
    +DATA/saico/datafile/users.259.631612183
    +DATA/saico/datafile/DBA.XXX.XXXXXXXXX
    Regards
    S.Azar

    The all files movement of asm to non-asm and vice-versa is given in document id 252219.1 on metalink. Please look at the same. In nut shell you have to do the following:
    1. Start your database with ASM.
    2. Create pfile from spfile.
    3. Edit pfile to reflect controlfile name in file system location.
    4. SQL> Startup nomount.
    5. Use RMAN to copy the control file from ASM to NON-ASM.
    RMAN> RESTORE CONTROLFILE FROM '<filename_of_old_control_file>';
    6. SQL> alter database mount;
    7. Use RMAN to copy the database from ASM to NON-ASM.
    RMAN> BACKUP AS COPY DATABASE format '/u01/oradata/nonasmdb/datafile/%U';
    8. From RMAN
    RMAN> SWITCH DATABASE TO COPY;

  • Unable to Create Entity Model from existing oracle database

    Hi,
    I am using Visual Studio 2013, .net framework 4.5, entity framework 5.0 and oracle 11g database.
    Issue Description: I need to develop WCF service to exposing the account information which needs to get the data from 20 oracle tables. Trying to create entity model from existing oracle database. first i tried creating just two tables it
    was created but it took more than 30 minutes. then i selected remaining few tables it took more than a days but nothing created just showing spinning the wheel. then i tried with fresh project and selected all the tables but same issue nothing created and
    also there is no error. during this process i checked database query monitoring there is a big sql statement collection tables metadata. i don't know what was wrong the query taking too much time to complete the  process.
    we tried multiple machine and different oracle database all are same issue.
    Sql server database -looks good no issues.
    Any help/tips/ideas welcome to overcome this issue.

    Hi Sakthimp,
    Welcome to MSDN forum.
    Your issue is out of support range of VS General Question forum which mainly discusses the usage of Visual Studio IDE such as
    WPF & SL designer, Visual Studio Guidance Automation Toolkit, Developer Documentation and Help System
    and Visual Studio Editor.
    Because your issue only occurred with oracle database, moreover Oracle developed the Entity Framework for Oracle itself, I suggest that you can consult your issue on Oracle forum/community:
    you will get better solution and support there.

  • What is the Best way to extract a subset of data from a Production database

    Hi,
    One of our cleint want to to extract a subset of data from a Production databases in order to build a dev or test database. Since it is a banking sector they do not want to clone the db.
    Can anybdoy suggests any tool or any info
    Regards
    Manoj

    DataBee is one option. Depending on circumstances, you may also want their DataMasker utility in addition...
    Of course, depending on your particular system and your particular requirements, this sort of thing can rather quickly get quite complicated since you may need very particular types of subsets of data...

    As you are using export/import to migrate database to 10.2.0.4. enterprise edition.
    So there is no need to upgrade 10.2.0.3 standard edition.
    1. So take export from 10.2.0.3 standard edition.
    2. install the 10.2.0.4 enterprise edition and Create new database in 10.2.0.4 enterprise edition
    3. import
    4. Drop old database after taking backup. Uninstall 10.2.0.3 standard edition

  • Changing expired password on a cbckend database from a frontend database

    I have a split database with an Oracle backend (BE) and MS Access frontend (FE). My question is how to reset an expired password on the BE from the FE.
    If I log on to the backend via sqlplus an error ORA-28001 (Password expired) occurs and the system immediately prompts for a new password before completing the login process.
    If I log on from the frontend I get the same ORA error from the BE, but as far as I can tell, I can't reset the password from the FE.
    I can capture the error fine at the FE and I am thinking that I could use this to open a dialog to reset the password and change it over the ODBC connection. The problem is that I need to get a connection to the BE database before sending a command to change the password from the FE, but since login cannot be completed from the FE, because of the expired password, I can't get an ALTER USER statement to execute on the BE to reset the password.
    Is there a way to change a pre-expired password on an Oracle backend database from a frontend database? I don't see this as an Oracle/Access problem but as a problem that exists for any split database.

    I have thought about this a little and I am thinking about keeping a table of password update information. I can use this to create a "soft" expired password, using an expiration date in the table for each account. If the password is expired by the database then we can just update it with sqlplus or one of the other options.
    As far as getting the organization to change it is waaaay to big and stupid to change their policy.

  • Creating Standby Database from ASM Databse none ASM

    I have ASM RAC database running on Solaris 10. I want to take a backup with RMAN and move the Backup to none ASM on other Stand alone server. I want to use this none ASM backup database to create Standby Database for Test purpose. Is it doable? If it is doable can you answer following questions?
    What command should I use with RMAN to take a full backup and move it to none ASM platform?
    Thank you

    Well, the answer is most likely yes, but first need to confirm
    - Do you want a physical or logical standby?
    - Will the standby run on the same platform , i.e. also Solaris 10?
    - What version of database ? It is much easier in 11g.

How can I achieve this, these are 2 different servers at different locations. Can somebody give me step by step instruction - would greatly appreciate it !
    Thanks,
    Vikas

  • Failover Database - From ASM to Filesystem

    Hi,
    Based on this article : http://manchev.org/2012/01/building-a-failover-database-using-oracle-database-11g-standard-edition-and-file-watchers/
    I would like to know if it would be possible to perform the same operation but in a case where my source database is using ASM and the failover one isnt.
    I think this (http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B28359_01/backup.111/b28270/rcmasmmi.htm#i1014926) should apply , but I haven't got the time to test it myself just yet so I thought to try out here and maybe get some valuable information/feedback on it.
    Thanks in advance.
    Greetings,
    N K

    Yes that's correct.
    The control file can be restored using the from/to clause. Generate a control file backup from the primary (which is on the FRA) and restore it:
    restore controlfile from '/backup/controlfile.bkp' to '/u01/control_file_path.ctl';And the datafiles new location can be set during restore as you pointed out, with switch datafile all at the end:
    SET NEWNAME FOR DATAFILE 1 TO NEW;
    SET NEWNAME FOR DATAFILE 2 TO NEW;
    SET NEWNAME FOR DATAFILE 3 TO NEW;
    SET NEWNAME FOR DATAFILE 4 TO NEW;
    restore database;
    SWITCH DATAFILE ALL;"TO NEW" clause is if you plan on using OMF with the File System, through the db_create_file_dest. If the datafiles are to be spread out on different mount points you can name them individually, like:
    SET NEWNAME FOR DATAFILE 1 TO '/path/to/datafile1.dbf';
    SWITCH DATAFILE ALL;Also don't forget to clear (rebuild) your redo log files after restore, setting DB_CREATE_ONLINE_LOG_DEST_n appropriately.

  • Duplicate Database From  ASM to ASM

    Hi Guys
    I am running Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.3.0 with RAC on HP-UX using ASM. I have two nodes on cluster now I have a new cluster environment with three nodes using ASM as well.
    I want to duplicate my databases from two nodes to three nodes using my backups. I am using rman backups.
    How do I begin to do that?
    Please help !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Thanks

    Which, as far as I recall, wouldn't make any difference.
    Your 'target' is the auxiliary database, which is pointed to by a tns service name.
    Provided the backup is accessible on both servers (maybe by using NFS), duplicate database should like a charm.
    But then I am already abstracting docs, which is evidently exactly what you want.
