Creating Still images

I would like to creat still images in iMovie while the movie is playing. I know that I could do this in previous versions but now I can't do it using the shift-command - s keys. It just beeps when I try it. Is there a setting I need to adjsut to be able to do this? Right now I have to go back to the beginning of the clip after it makes a still image. this wastes time.
Thanks in advance for any help.

-matter of fact it's never done that.
I was able to make still shots while the clip was playing in a previous version of iMovie. Maybe iMovie 3 or 4? Last year when I did my daughters ballet recital I was able to make still shots while the clip was playing.
-what exactly do you mean when you say that you have to go back to the beginning of the clip?
After I get done making the still shot, I have to click on the clip again and it takes me back to the beginning of that clip.
Thanks for your help!

  • Can't create still image

I just upgraded to Quick Time Pro. I 'm trying to create still images from a movie clip, but the EXPORT option is BLANK. Why????

There should be three options for still images. First, you could use Export, then use the Export drop-down menu to choose "Movie to Picture" if you only want single images. For a sequence of all frames in the movie you should choose "Movie to Image Sequence". If you don't want all frames then use the shift key and the arrow keys to select a range of frames and then use Copy to put the selection on the clipboard. Open a new QT document and use paste, then export the image sequence. Finally, you could use Copy to put the frame showing in a movie window onto the Clipboard, where you could use a graphic editor and import the frame for saving in your choice of formats. If none of these options are available then you may have to re-install QT as these been the standard ways to save images in QT Player going back several versions.

  • Creating Still Images in FCP

In FCP, How do I create still images and then save them in a high quality jpg format that can be used for websites and promotion?

To create a still image from video in FCP, place the Timeline playhead on the frame you want to use, then go to File->Export->Using QuickTime Conversion. Once the export window opens, choose Still Image from the FORMAT menu and then choose the file type from the OPTIONS menu. Give the image file a name, navigate to the location you want to save it and hit SAVE.

  • Create still images from video files?

from http://gadgetwise.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/04/16/5-new-photoshop-tips-for-photographers/ , "You can now preview video in Bridge and create still images from video files."
I just installed the 5.4 Camera Raw Update.
I can preview the AVI files from my Nikon D5000, but have not figured out how I might create a still image ( other than stopping the movie, and dragging to copy ) Have tried searching adobe, this forum, have not found more info ion this.

Stop the video at the desired point, press the Shift, Command, and 4 keys, drag the cursor so that the whole picture is highlighted, let go of the button, and open the PNG on the desktop.

  • Creating Still Images/High quality JPG's...please help

We are in desparate need of creating quality still images from captured video. Basically, we have footage in mini DV format that we import into Final Cut HD using a Sony Clamshell deck. What is the best way to make high quality still images?
We tried it this way....Export Quicktime as Still image...and it just looks bad, Even after De-interlacing it within Photoshop. We need it to look exactly like it does if we simply press pause on the deck or pause within Final Cut.

When you start with DV material, the highest res you can for a still image capture is 720x480 (non-square) or the equivalent of a really bad quality cheepo still camera. (~640x480 square pixels)
To avoid the need to deinterlace, (the horrors of which are described below) find sections in your masterpiece that have VERY LITTLE motion, i.e. everyone/thing standing/existing absolutely still with the camera locked down on a tripod. These sections will yield the very best possible still images.
If you have motion the frame, the still images will exhibit 'tearing' which comes from the two fields of video being recorded ~1/60 second apart. The second field shows elements displaced from the first field - hence a kind of internal image shifting going on. The only real way to deal with these kind of images is to deinterlace them - that is - decide which field you are going to keep and throw away the other.
When you have deinterlaced the image, you have in effect reduced it from a 720x480 image to a 720x240 image. The image pixel count REMAINS 720x480 but with half the vertical information as the remaining lines are doubled or interpolated to build back to 480 lines.
    Confused yet? I hope not...
Still, if you know you'll want stills from a project, it's better to carry around a small digital still camera, you'll get better results. Otherwise, plan on pretty small prints.
    Good luck.

  • Any way to create still image of menu

Is there a way in dvd sp to create a still image of a menu, complete with drop zones, buttons etc? I need something usable at full resolution, not like a screen shot or anything.
Something like the save still feature on a video clip but for a menu?

So I took a screenshot using capture me. The resolution of the image on the dispay ends up being 640 x 480, 4:3 aspect ratio.
If I import that into dvd sp, it doesnt line up quite right, but almost right. its a little thin side to side.
If I resize it in photoshop to 720 x 480, for some reason when I bring it back into dvd sp it doesnt unstretch it, but displays it as a letterbox. The pct file says its using square pixels in photosop so I must be missing something as to why it doesnt resolve back properly. Any ideas?

  • Creating still images from video

About two days ago I downloaded some Itunes videos and was able to save stills (images) using quicktime's copy option. However, once Itunes updated.. quicktime would not allow me to do this and would save as a gray image instead. I've now downloaded quicktime pro and read the instructions to save stills. However, the export button will not work for me. Any ideas on how to fix this? thanks.

Are these "purchased" files from the iTunes Store?
If so they are "protected" files and copying is not allowed.
The free version of the QuickTime Player can copy a single frame from any non protected QuickTime file. The free version can't "export" and the copy must be pasted using an image editing app into a new file.

  • Creating Still Images in iMovie 08

    Hello
I work with with two G5's and a numerous MacBooks, the problem arose when I was delivering iMovie 08 training. Ctrl - Click - Add still frame to project worked on capturing a still on the G5 and MacBook but did not work on a top of the end MacBook Pro. The option just wasnt there when i ctrl - clicked? any ideas??? All MacBooks and MacBookPro's were operating iMovie 08.
    Regards
    Glen.

Other than that any other ideas? Try installing 10.5? Its just really strange when my g5 and macbooks work fine and these two brand new macbook pros dont!
Not really. Of course I am assuming there are on hardware changes that would preclude accessing context menu or screen capture access which have been part of the OS for some time now. I have mixed emotions regarding Leopard. On the one hand it added several new features. (E.g., like being able to use Front Row now if i want to do so.) On the other hand, I am disappointed that my MPEG-2 encoder is no longer functional, Compressor no longer works (switched to bitVice), and I have to boot up in Tiger to get DVD Studio Pro to work. (I.e., I stopped updating FCP after v4.5/never switched to Studio.) So there are some things lost in updating. Just can't see why a MacBook Pro should be affected.
Anyway thanks for your help and if you can think of anything else please let me know.
Will do. And, if you will, let us know if you find out anything definite in case other users come up with similar problems.

  • Creating PICTURES from STILL IMAGES

I have been playing around and looking for someway to create a still picture from your movie. I have been able to create still images, but is it at all possible to just take a simple picture from one of the frames?
I am interested in using this for posting and emailing them. I also would love to be able to use the Ken Burns effect on a still image in my movie.
Does anyone know if this is possible?

    Thanks SD,
I am quite aware of those two methods. My question is if it possible to to the KB Effect on one of your still images.
Forexample, you are showing a video and all the sudden it pauses and zooms in on the paused frame.
My other question is if it is possible to make a still frame and then just save it as a photo. Lets say I wanted to make a movie poster for my movie. Can I use one of the frames as a simple jpeg?

  • How to Work With Still Images in Premiere Elements 10

I am struggling with the still images in my Titles for my video project, and would really appreciate some help. I have done a lot of googling on this and searched this forum, but can't seem to find the answer I need, maybe not searching the right questions or just "not getting it".  Not even PE Adobe tips or Adobe TV cover this, although it seems important to know. I am not clear how PE10 will handle the resolution of an imported still image or graphic art from Photoshop. Perhaps this topic will also help others as well.
I am working on a video project for my job, editing an old training video. Created new Title graphics in Photoshop, inserted the Title images and integrated with video clips, then exported the video segments as MPEG files.  I burned the whole video to DVD.
When the final DVD plays on a computer or TV screen, the photo images in the titles are fuzzy even though they were clear 300 dpi images. (I know dpi doesn't matter in video). The title text is also a bit fuzzy and the title text that has animation applied to it is even more fuzzy. Yet the old MPEG video clips look fine - it's just my title graphics and text that look bad (embarrasing).
So I need to know how to improve the quality of the still images/graphics for a video??
    Project settings:
    - Hard Disk, Standard 48kHz
    - Editing Mode: DV NTSC
    - Frame: 720 x 480 (0.9091)
    - Frame rate: 29.97fps
    - with "Optimize Stills" box checked
Using these settings because I am working with MPEG files from an old training video CD.
File Export: MPEG, NTSC DVD Standard
I export the video clips as MPEGS because they will be burned to a CD or DVD for distribution to our staff offices.
    Work Details:
In Photoshop, I created still image graphics for each Title sized at 720 x480 with high resolution photos and company logo (300 dpi), and save them as a bitmap to import into PE10.  In the Timeline, I insert the still image in "Video 1" track, then in Video 2 track create a Title over it for text (some animated, some still). Sometimes I stack 2 or three titles with text in separate video tracks over one still title image. Yes, there is a red line across the top in the Timeline because I didn't render the still images.
    Questions:
    • What is the best resolution for images imported into PE10 from Photoshop?
    • Should I be creating title graphics/images at 720 x 480 or a larger ratio like 1920 x 1080 so it will display better when seen on a computer or TV?
    • Do I need to render each title image in the timeline so that it will eventually display better in the MPEG?
    • Is it better to create a title and then insert the still image into the title so they are integrated, rather than layered on separate video tracks?
I would greatly appreciate any assistance.

Remember that DVD-Video was designed for CRT TV sets, and was a major step up from VHS tape. However, when viewed on an HD computer monitor, or HD TV *, it is still ONLY 720 x 480, with is about 1/4 of the resolution as 1920 x 1080, which is about what we are used to seeing on those display devices. That is but only 25% of the quality. It can never look as good as HD material.
Good luck, and if I missed something, please point that out to me.
    Hunt
    * With the advent of BD players, and up-rezzing DVD players, things HAVE improved, when viewing a DVD-Video on an HD TV. The newer players have up-rezzing chips, that do a very good job of "improving" the viewed material's quality. However, even with those amazing chips, DVD-Video will NEVER be as good as a full-HD source. Also, computers do not have those up-rezzing chips, so when one views a DVD-Video on a high-rez computer monitor, it will still look pretty bad. There ARE a couple of new DVD software players, that improve the quality of DVD-Video played on a high-rez computer monitor, and a few look fairly promising. I speculate that we will see some more development in the DVD-Video area, especially as BD is not proving to be the big seller, that many promised. Even 3D is not helping BD realize its promise.

  • Any way to capture a still frame as an image in Imovie HD? "Create Still Frame" just gives me short MOV files

I'm trying to export a still from a project I'm working on so I can add some things to it in photoshop before importing it back in to the imovie project.
It's from the end of a clip I have. I know I could just use grab and take a screen capture but the quality would be awful.
Imovie HD has this feature, "Create Still Frame" and when I google this problem all the answers tell me to use that.
HOWEVER: When I do use Create Still Frame, instead of giving me a JPG I can use or another image format, it creates a short 5 second .mov clip of the still. If I wanted it in movie format I'd just use the original clip, what I need is an image format!
There doesn't seem to be an option anywhere to change what type of still frame format it uses. There must be a way to do this however, all the answers I've found say it should be JPG and I should be able to locate it then in the project package - what am I doing wrong?

The shortest way to accomplish this is to download a copy of MPEG Streamclip as relayed by longtime iMovie Discussion Group participant AppleMan1958
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15808352#15808352
First, get an app called MPEG Streamclip, which is free. (google MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5)
    Open MPEG Streamclip.
In iMovie, select the clip you need. Then, right-click/Reveal in Finder.
Drag this clip into MPEG Streamclip
In MPEG Streamclip, move the playhead to the frame you want.
In MPEG Streamclip, click FILE/EXPORT FRAME.
Choose JPEG, TIFF, or PNG and give it a name.

  • Can't import still images into a project or create a podcast track

I'd be grateful if anyone can explain why I can't import still images onto a track like you can easily do in garage band - in garage band you simply create a podcast track, then drag your photos onto it. However in logic, when I open the media browser i can get a photo folder up but it will not allow me to even look at the contents.
Also, why is it that the manual for logic express has nothing about how to import a movie to produce a movie score - and yet garage band can even do this.
    Thanks for any advice.

Have you tried "Working with Video" section of the manual? It's somewhere close to the end...
Logic works with audio, not images. That's why you can't import a photo, because media browser is used to locate audio files, mostly. And sometimes video.
I guess it works this way, you create a podcast with Logic, bounce it to mp3 or another compressed format. Then import it into GB and insert a photo.

  • Best practices for creating movie from still images?

I have created an architectural model in *someone else's* software, and animated a camera in *someone else's* software, and rendered that out to still images.  I rendered every 5th frame (for a total of 401 frames) in order to save time on rendering.  My goal is to create a short movie (2 minutes) of the camera flying around the building.
When I imported all of the images, I stretched the duration so that they equally fit the 2 minutes, and used the keyframe assistant to sequence the layers.  Now that I've done that, the movie is choppy (as I expected it to be, since I only rendered every 5th frame).  Does anyone have suggestions as to what effect or transition can be used to smooth the sequence out?  Or am I living in a dreamland and I need to go back and render every single frame?  Is this even the software I should be using?  I'm obviously a n00b, so any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Using After Effects CS4 (9.0.0.346) on Windows 7 64-bit

Or am I living in a dreamland and I need to go back and render every single frame?
You are. There is no effect that could automatically synthesize those missing frames even halfway realistically. Timewarp and Twixtor are only gonna make things look like a smear even with a lot of tweaking. By the time you have tweaked their settings and done all your masking and otehr corrections, your 3D render with all frames will be finished just as well and offer better quality.

  • Alpha layer on V2 creates banding in the still image of V1

I have about seventy-five shots with a still image background and an animated object above it (on video track 2). The alpha type is set correctly (black), but for some reason the background has color banding on any spot where the V2 alpha layer exists. It's critical that we correct this distortion, so if anyone has any ideas they'd be much appreciated!
The animated layer is a combination of a Photoshop PNG and a shape created in Motion. The animation was all done in Motion as well. Unfortunately, using the still image is a background in Motion to begin with is NOT an option, but to explain why would take another four or five paragraphs (this is a complicated and long-running project!).
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the help. I will try rendering it in 10-bit.
About rendering it in Motion. . . well, that actually does not create the banding, but due to what some experts suspect is deep-seated problem with our OS X or Final Cut Studio installation, it does other things with the image which are unacceptable for our output.
Scratch that! Thanks so much! Rendering in high-precision YUV fixed our problem! (With the color banding, I mean.) We've got a nearly seven hour DVD set going out nationwide soon and you just made this one of our briefest and easiest problems to overcome.
I thought I had tried every combination of rendering but with so many variables, I guess that one slipped through.
