Creating sub vis and projects

Hi,
I am currently working on a project which involves a large chunk of Labview programming. I am new to Labview but am relatively experienced with C. I have designed an algorithm for C that I am currently trying to "translate" into Labview. The algorithm I have designed is a very modular piece of code, I have used a lot of smaller functions and called them in main rather than writing the entirety of the code in main.
My problem is that I don't really understand the difference between Labview projects and using one main VI to call other subVIs. I am unaware of whether I would be better off using sub VIs held together in one main VI or would I be better to use a Labview project. I am on a very tight schedule as it is a rather large project so I don't have a lot of time to experiment with my code-writing.
Does anyone have any advice on which approach is better/easier for an inexperienced user or if they are both pretty much the same?
Gillian

Projects and subVIs are completely unrelated concepts.
The project is a means of organizing all the parts of the system you need to develop a program and build it into an executable.
A subVI is just any VI which is used as a part of another VI.
You need both.  When you open LabVIEW to start writing your code, create a new project and then keep your main VI and all subVIs and other parts like customized controls in the project.  Since you are an experienced programmer and have a modular design for the implementation of your algorithm, you can move those concepts directly to LV.
SubVIs should be logical groupings of code such as the smaller functions in your algorithm.  The entire algorithm could be contained in a subVI which has those functions as subVis in the algorithm VI.

  • Is it possible to unlink sub VIs to prevent affecting other projects

We are running a validation with different flavours of the same IC which require using the same set of VIs with slightly different settings. In order to avoid confusion for users who are running with one type of silicon we have decided to make a copy of the LabVIEW code in a different area of our project folder on our network. We are concerned that LabVIEW will still find VIs from, say Project A, and use them for Project B, which may or may not cause problems when re-running tests for Project A as some of the VIs may need to be modified for Project B.
We have looked at creating different sub folders and unmapping network drives but are still concerned that LabVIEW will be smart enough to find the Project A files when it should pick up the Project B files. The issue is that we may need to edit some of the VIs for Project B but don't want them to be modified for Project A.
Is there a "One-click" method of unlinking all sub-VIs for Project B and when we load the main VI for Project B we can then manually point to the correct files so that Project A will not be affected and we can still run the VIs for Project A in the same environment with the same network drives mapped?
This is complicated to explain so let me know if you need clarification.

I don't think there is an automatic way of doing this. (someone else may know better)
I would do a "save as" on the project, duplicate all files elsewhere, then add a prefix to all of your VI filenames.
I tend to do this for projects that re-use old code too. Add a project specific prefix to the VIs and then if I decide to modify things in the new project I don't break old code.
    Edit:
Another thought: If it is just settings you want to change rather than the actual code, maybe you could use a config file of some kind to load in the values that are going to change with your different setups. Then you use all the same VIs but just change the config file between different setups.

  • How to creat multiple sub VIs'

I have a VERY large VI that finaly crashed due to the large size. What is the best way to create "Sub VIS"? I have almost 800K of code. Should I create all the sub vis and then add them to my Project? I want the program to call the sub vis automaticaly.
    Thanks
    Philip

    Hi Philip,
    Backups:
As Lynn (johnsold) said, local backups are a minimum requirement.
A service like Dropbox is better in case of computer crash.
Note: Temporarily disable Dropbox syncing when doing builds in a Dropbox folder as this may cause builds to fail.
The best solution is true source control like the free TortiseSVN.
    For sub vis I suggest:
Identify code sections that perform one specific function. This makes a logical sub vi. If you can easily come up with a name to describe the
section (like "Parse Input String" for example) then you are on the right track. With some practice you will be creating sub vis that can be used
in other programs and save you time in the future. This is a good reason to NOT include unrelated code in a sub vi just because it will fit.
Take note of the number of inputs and outputs in the code section. Ideally you want a small number of inputs and the same for outputs (3 or 4). Use clusters to reduce the number of I/O items.
Standardize on a connector pane layout - this makes wires line up better. The 4224 pattern works well. When LabVIEW creates sub vis it only creates the number of inputs and outputs that are required. So you will normally have to change the connector pattern and rearrange the controls and indicators every time you create a sub vi.
Include error in and error out in their standard places even if you don't need them for the particular application. When you use that sub vi later
    you may need them.
Good practice is to use Type Defines for controls and indicators that go to more than 1 place. In your case, it is a jugement call if it is worth the trouble to do this on an existing program. Once you start using sub vis more, Type devs become very important. If you don't use them, changing a data structure will require manually changing every sub vi that uses that data structure.

Remove the posgres jar from the library manager and still not able to run simple two page applications.
All the projects in the other workspace compile fine. The prolblem is that now I am not able to use the internal OC4J. I remove the workspace with the five projects, and the JARs and the two page app will not run.
The OC4J is running when launched from the IDE, ti just can find the pages.
New install of JDEV and the two page app will run fine. Add two user two user libraries and the app will not run.
    Thank you,

Do you have a database connection to postgress defined in JDeveloper?
JDev might be picking this up and trying to add a datasource for it to the embedded OC4J - so try removing it, or alternatively add the postgress JDBC driver jar files to the libraries node under tools->embedded OC4J preferences.

  • Flash Builder 4 super slow when Workspace and Project is on Network Drive

Hi I was wondering if maybe it is not common practice to create a workspace and project in a Network Drive? When I do this Flash Builder runs extremely slow ( build workspace slow, saving slow, code hinting slow, undo slow, etc, etc, etc). Very painful!
When I place the same project locally on my C drive everything runs fine. So should I not be running things off the network? I would really like to since all my files are on the network with backup system. Can anyone offer some advice? Or maybe I need to optimize something? Thanks
    - D

    Hi.
Having your workspace and project on a network drive is not recommended as Flash Builder writes and reads a lot from the workspace and that will be slow.
A version control system such as svn or git with a repository hosted on your network drive should be perfectly fine. (You only take the hit when you check in and check out)

  • What r the trns code for maintenance view, help view and projection view

    hi all
what r the transaction code for maintenance view, help view and projection view
can anyone tell me how to create maitenance, help and projection view.
    with an example

<b>What is the Different Types and Usage of Views
The followings are different types of views:</b>
    - <b>Database View   (SE11)</b>
Database views are implement an inner join, that is, only records of the primary table (selected via the join operation) for which the corresponding records of the secondary tables also exist are fetched. Inconsistencies between primary and secondary table could, therefore, lead to a reduced selection set.
In database views, the join conditions can be formulated using equality relationships between any base fields. In the other types of view, they must be taken from existing foreign keys. That is, tables can only be collected in a maintenance or help view if they are linked to one another via foreign keys.
    - <b>Help View    ( SE54)</b>
Help views are used to output additional information when the online help system is called.
When the F4 button is pressed for a screen field, a check is first made on whether a matchcode is defined for this field. If this is not the case, the help view is displayed in which the check table of the field is the primary table. Thus, for each table no more than one help view can be created, that is, a table can only be primary table in at most one help view.
    -<b> Projection View  (SE11)</b>
Projection views are used to suppress or mask certain fields in a table (projection), thus minimizing the number of interfaces. This means that only the data that is actually required is exchanged when the database is accessed.
A projection view can draw upon only one table. Selection conditions cannot be specified for projection views.
    <b>- Maintenance View   ( SE54 )</b>
Maintenance views enable a business-oriented approach to looking at data, while at the same time, making it possible to maintain the data involved. Data from several tables can be summarized in a maintenance view and maintained collectively via this view. That is, the data is entered via the view and then distributed to the underlying tables by the system.

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you had Errors TF30162 and TF250025 when creating a New Team Project in TFS2012 with Sharepoint Site on Visual Studio.
The Errors TF30162 seemed that the reports for TFS could not be uploaded due a permission problem. The fix was really easy.
Go to your team foundation server
    Open the administration console.
    Click on Reporting
    Click on Edit
    Click on Reports Tab
Enter the credential for the Reports
    Save
    Click on Start Jobs
In addtion, the problem may be due to the caching done by Team Explorer in Visual Studio. Exiting the copy of VS on the client and reloading it will fix the problem as the updated team process settings will cached locally.
To resolve the Errors TF250025, you will need to register a new internal URL for the SharePoint site using Alternate Access Mappings.
Here are two great blogs for you to take a look at:
    http://blogbaris.blogspot.in/2012_08_01_archive.html
    http://petersullivan.com.au/2009/11/23/tf250025-and-tf262600-errors-on-team-foundation-server-tfs-2010-project-portal-dashboard/
If still no help, for quick and accurate answers to your questions, it is recommended that you initial a new thread in Visual Studio Team Foundation Server forums.

  • Bug with workflow that creates a folder and sub folder with the same name.

    Hi,
I've found a possible bug in SharePoint 2010 workflows. I only have access to SharePoint 2010 and SharePoint Designer 2010 over my companies intranet, afaik I don't have access to to logs or anything server side so sorry for the any missing information.
I had some problems with a workflow in one list that needed to create some folders and subfolders in a second list. The production version did a lot more so I setup a test area with 1 list and a workflow that only does the folder creation part and have managed
    to consistently replicate this problem.
The test list has two columns, [title] and [sub folder title]
The workflow starts by getting the values for [title] and [sub folder title] into variables.
It then creates a folder in the same list with the same name as [title], and then creates a sub folder under this with the name from [sub folder title]
So the resulting structure would be:
    Test List:-
List item with fields [title] and [sub folder title]
        [folder: title]:-
            [folder: sub folder title]
If both folder names are different (e.g Folder1 and Folder2) then it works perfectly fine, if both folder names are the same (regardless of character case, e.g. samefolderName and sameFolderName) then the workflow fails.
As part of the test i made the first action of the workflow to log the message "Workflow Started" to the history list. When the workflow fail there's nothing logged in the history list other than the error: "The workflow could not update the
item, possibly because one or more columns for the item require a different type of information."
Creating a sub folder with the same name as it's parent works fine manually but for some reason a workflow can't seem to do it in one action.
As there's no history list entries before the error it looks like the workflow is just failing to start but if i do something like add an if statement to check if [title] and [sub folder title] are the same, and only create the subfolder when they are not
then it runs fine doing what it's set to.
The function of the workflow in our office was for convenience so were just working without it. Just wanted to post to see if anyone else has come across this/could try to replicate or explain this  and see if it's a SharePoint bug or something specific
    to our setup.
    thanks,
    Martin

not sure about the specifics of your workflow, but if you're querying the list for the folders... keep in mind that a list lookup will only ever bring back ONE item... even if there are several items that meet the filter criteria... example: if i search
a list for an item assigned to "john doe", there may be 15 tasks that meet the criteria, and it'll only grab one... this is why SP Designer WARNS you when your list lookup may exhibit this behavior.

  • How do I stop iTunes from creating duplicate entries and sub-folders?????

I am SOOO SICK AND TIRED of iTunes deciding to create sub-folders all the time. I just want to have one big folder and throw all my music into it. I have now spent several weeks trying to re-create my music library after my hard drive crashed, and iTunes keeps messing everything up.
If I let iTunes do what it wants, I end up with two or three copies of each song. If I try to consolidate my files by deleting extra copies of songs, suddenly iTunes can't "find" anything.
When I go looking for the "missing" songs, iTunes creates endless fractal layers of folders within folders.
    I AM SICK OF THIS!
I AM ABOUT TO ABANDON ITUNES AND GO BACK TO WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER.

    CodeVII wrote:
Why when you have a large number of files it is better to have them in sub-folders???
Unchecking both those options still doesn't stop Itunes from putting files in Artist and Album folders..
The problem I see with putting music files in folders is if you want to move them or change the file properties with just the Operating System they take longer to access. So quicktime seems like something I'd try but....
I'd like to have the option to have my files in one Folder/Directory.
iTunes really wants you to use iTunes to manage the iTunes library. If you use the operating system or third party tools to modify tags, iTunes won't detect the change until it has some reason to access the tag, e.g. during playback. In contrast WMP will sniff out changes in your tags and update itself automatically.
Once you've got your media in iTunes why do you need to access it again at the folder level? As it happens I'm quite obsesive over the structure of my files both logical and physical (see grouping & scripts) but I strongly recommend others to avoid the temptation to waste too much time over the physical layout and leave iTunes to get on with it...
Many other programs have offered choices for folder structure, invalid character replacement etc. over many years without iTunes joining in. I suspect that the developers of iTunes have long since decided that extra choice in this area isn't necessary since "it just works", though by all means drop a line to iTunes Feedback.

  • What's the best way to create sub-totals & grand-total in SQL2008 R2 (and beyond)?

What is the easiest way to get sub totals and a grand total on data that is being grouped?  It looks like RollUp might work, but it's being depreciated.
    My query is:
    SELECT
    COMPANY
    ,INVSTR_CD
    ,STATE_C
    ,SUM(CO_SHARE_TOTBAL) as CO_SHARE_TOTBAL
    FROM #ASSET AS A
    WHERE A.D_GETIT = 'Y'
    GROUP BY COMPANY, STATE_C, INVSTR_CD
    ORDER BY COMPANY, INVSTR_CD, STATE_C
I need to provide a sub-total of the SUM'd field (SUM(CO_SHARE_TOTBAL) as CO_SHARE_TOTBAL), at the change of the COMPANY field.
Then a Grand Total of all the SUM'd fields (SUM(CO_SHARE_TOTBAL).
    Thanks in advance!!

If you post DDL of your table (only relevant columns) and some data and desired output, I may try to reproduce it. Did you check Jacob's blog post and the very last query? It does take a few trials before getting this correct.
    Naomi,
I did try the last query on Jacob's post.  I couldn't get the first column to populate.
Thanks for the offer of help.
    DML is:
    Create Table #ASSET2 (
    [COMPANY] [varchar] (5) NULL
    ,[INVSTR_CD] [varchar](5) NULL
    ,[STATE_C] [char](2) NULL
    ,[SHARE_TOTBAL] [decimal] (15,2) NULL)
    Data is:
    Insert into #ASSET2 VALUES ('00000','099 ','FL','115226.77')
    Insert into #ASSET2 VALUES ('22222','030 ','CA','309899.43')
    Insert into #ASSET2 VALUES ('00000','010 ','CA','524296.89')

    Insert into #ASSET2 VALUES ('00000','099 ','NY','278489.10')

  • The latest Premier Pro CC 2014 update forced me to convert and create version of my project while guaranteeing that the project would not be altered; however, the timelines are not the up to date versions I had.

The latest Premier Pro CC 2014 update forced me to convert and create version of my project while guaranteeing that the project would not be altered; however, the timelines/sequences are not the up to date versions I had. I saved different version of this project for various purposes, but they were all named differently(i.e joe and mary wedding, joe and mary wedding 2, joe and mary wedding 3, joe and mary wedding 3.1).  I do not know if they just pulled the timelines from the earliest version, eradicated the data entirely, or something else.
Since the program prompts me to create and save a new version for the updated premier, I still have the previous projects, but cannot open them.  I imagine they are unchanged, but cannot be sure.
Thoughts? Is it possible to uninstall an update re-install it later?
    Please advise.
    Thank you.
    Brian

    Also...
Add to right click menu of timelines an entry for "go to next keyframe" and "go to last keyframe" a la After Effects, we should also be able to assign a kb shortcut to this.
There are buttons on either side of the create keyframe button to advance forward or backward in the effects control panel or timeline.
You can also advance forward or backward in the effects control window by holding shift while dragging the playhead.
Allow copy/paste of selection of audio/video effects, not just one at a time. Sure we can copy/paste attributes but since we can also copy/paste effects it would only make sense to allow to copy/paste a selection of effects.
I guess I don't get this one. If I have 5 effects on a clip, I can simply command-click on the ones I want to copy over to the other clip.

  • Private inlined VIs and packed project libraries

So, I'm trying to build a packed project library and it has a few *private* VIs that are crying out to be inlined (simple VIs used in a for loop etc). However, this seems to be causing a few issues:
    1. When I attempt to build the lvlibp I get an error stating "You cannot include inlined VIs inthis build if you remove the block diagram from the VI or if callers adapt to VIs in the packed library.". Whilst this makes sense to me for public packed library VIs, why does this matter for private ones - surely the VI will already get flattend out into the calling VI during the build process?
    2. If I try and set the Source File Settings for the inline VI to not remove the block diagram (as suggested by the error), the error still does not go away (I would really like to keep the ability for callers to adapt to VIs in the packed library).
Here's a stripped out project (with instructions) showing the issue.
It seems like a bug to me, but any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Shaun

I was just going through the instructions to reproduce the error. Because the error says "You cannot include inlined VIs in this build if you remove the block diagram from the VI OR if callers adapt to VIs in the packed library," it seems like as long as you maintain your settings for the caller to be able to adapt the VI, then I would expect this error to continue to occur.
