Creating transparent background

In previous versions of PhotoShop, under Help, there was a wonderful walk-thru that would take us step-by-step thru the process of creating a path file.
Has this option been moved, or removed?
I'm now using CS3. I believe this nice option was there two versions ago.

Dunno what the info at the link says, but how you go about getting a transparent background is often predicated by how that image will be used: print, web, video, games, some or all of those output destinations?

  • Creating transparent backgrounds in Keynote for export as titles in FCP

    I am creating titles in Keynote and exporting them into Final Cut. I was wondering if anyone knows how to make transparent backgrounds so I can overlay the titles on videos. I have tried "include transparency" but have been unsuccessful. I haven't found any help files to address this situation.
    Many thanks

    1. make sure your slide background is set to NONE, no color, no image
    no nothing
    2. Check the Include Transparency check box when you choose the
    QuickTime export
    3. Choose Custom from the formats pop-up
    4. Click the Settings button
    5. Choose Animation or PNG from the pop-up (it probably says Sorenson)
    6. Choose Millions of Colors+ from the depth pop-up
    Make any other quality or frame settings, and export it. You SHOULD get
    a movie that has a transparent background.

  • Trying to create transparent background on line art image

    I have an image that's black line are over a white background. I'm wanting to make that background transparent, and then lay it over another image so that only the dark lines show.
    I've tried making the background of the line art image transparent, and then Placing that image on top of the other image, but it came in with a white background. I'm looking for the full photoshop version equivalent of where you could select the background color, and set it to transparency.
    Also, give I have the line art image already placed on the background image, if there's a way to change the transparency of that image, that would be even better.
    I'm going by instructions on the support page "Change the background color of a document", but I'm not sure where it is I open the Fonts window.
    Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.

    If you want to create a blank file with transparent background, go to File>new>blank file, then select "transparent" under Background Contents,
    If you open an image with a white background, the Background layer is a locked layer. Duplicate the background layer; it will titled background copy layer
    Now, shut off the visibility of the background layer. Then, access the magic wand tool, click on a white area, and hit delete on the keyboard. On this tool''s option bar, you will have to check or unckeck contiguous, depending on the configuration of background/foreground interface. The tolerance setting may have to be adjusted for optimal results. The checkerboard pattern denotes transparency.
    If you save your file, be sure to select a file type that supports transparency.

  • How to create transparent background video?

    I'm trying to add some filters to some some imported text files from Photoshop, but they don't work so well so I need to import them as transparent video files. So, how do I export the text as a ProRes file from FCP with a transparent background so I can re-import it and add the video filters?
    I've tried fiddling around with the alpha channels but the background always seems to be black.

    You don't export the files as a ProRes clip.
    Place your text on a transparent background and export from PS as .tiff or .png stills. They will composite automatically. You can set the default length required in FCP's User Preferences...
    You must do this before you import the files.

  • Creating animations with transparent backgrounds?

    I'm running into some problems when using After Effects to create animations with transparent backgrounds for Keynote...
    I use animated gifs and short quicktime movies with uniform backgrounds as source files, use color keying to take out the backgrounds, preview them to see if they look OK, render the results as RGB+alpha, and... they don't show up as transparent in Keynote. They work in Powerpoint, however. I've tried outputting as .mov, as .gif, as premultiplied vs straight alpha... no joy. Can someone explain (or point me to an explanation) of how Keynote differs from other programs in its handling of transparency? What am I missing?

    Using a TYPE_INT_ARGB BufferedImage worked beautifully. I had played around with Image for hours, but it never occurred to me that BufferedImage would be needed. :)
    many, many thanks,

  • Want to create an oval vignette in photoshop elements 10 with transparent background for printing w

    I am fairly new to PSE and I want to create an oval vignette in Photoshop Elements 10 with transparent background for printing on white paper using MS Publisher. Using the white background on inverse selection makes a slight line impression and either it should have a defined "frame" or nothing.
    Appreciate any guidance.

    Try with the Elliptical marquee tool:
    On the tool's option bar set feather 25-40 px (experiment)
    Drag out the Ellipse to embrace the object
    Go to Layer>new>layer via copy, or CTRL+J
    Your selection should fade out as a vignette and be surrounded by transparency
    Save this layer via File>save for web, select PNG-24, and tick "Transparency"

  • How to create transparent text on a solid color background?

    I want to create a transparent text on a solid color backround, and I need text transparency to go all the way to through the image (i.e. do not show the solid color background). I have the transparent background layer, the solid rectangle layer that occupies part of the image, and the text layer (with text element) on the top of the solid rectangle layer. How do I make text transparency to go all the way through? Here is a similar example for Photoshop CS, only in my case, the backround layer is transparent (i.e. there is no picture): http://www.photoshopessentials.com/photo-effects/transparent-text-area/. Basically, I need to make the letters see through, so they show the backround color on which the image will be placed. Is it possible to do in Photoshop Elements? I'm using version 9 on Windows 7. Thanks.

    Thank you all for the suggestions, especially 99jon. 99jon's walktrhough is helpful, but I was hoping to find a workaround that would allow keeping transparent text that goes all the way through all other layers to transparent background as a text level, but once I flatten the image, I'd lose the text layer, so I cannot make any changes to it (like slightly change the font, size, style, face, etc). Let me clarify a bit what I'm trying to do to see if there is an even better option.
    Say, I need to have a 300x300 pixel image that (forget about photos) consists of a solid-color circle (circle can be white, black, red, blue, or any solid color, or gradient, does not matter) on a transparent background, and inside of this circle I'd like to cut out a word (say, the word "TEST" with no bevels or other decoration, just flat font) all the way to the transparent background. I just need a circle with text cut out and showing around the circle and through the word "TEST". So if a circle is white and I place the image on a blue background, the word "TEST" would be in blue (so would be the area around the circle).
    Is there a way to set it up to allow changing the color of the circle (say, from white to black, or blue, or red) and keep smooth edges of the text (and circle) blending with the background (i.e. avoid jagged edges) without redoing every color variation from scratch? Like, getting some master file which would define size and position of the elements,a s well as font, etc, and from this master file, use simple adjustments to change the color.
    Ideally (in my dream world), there would be an option for the text element to be of transparent color that would go through all layers below it. But there must be a not too complex way to do this, right?

  • Creating PDFs from documents with graphics having transparent background

    I came across this problem when making PDFs of PowerPoint presentations but I have found that the same thing happens in Word.
    PDFs created from documents containing graphics having transparent backgrounds end up being very large (usually much larger than the source documents) and rendering slowly on the screen. The graphics are either JPGs with background set as transparent using the Set Transparent Color tool on the picture toolbar in MS Office applicatons, or PNGs that already have transparent backgrounds when inserted in the document. PDFs made from the same documents in which the graphics do not have transparent backgrounds are much smaller and render more quickly.
    When I try to select the graphics in the resulting PDFs using the Touch-up Object tool, I find that each graphic is actually made up of many individual graphic lines. Graphics without a transparent background select as a single object.
    I have tried several PDF creation tools and all kinds of settings but nothing seems to make much of a difference. The only way I can get a reasonable file size is to reduce resolution in the PDF creation settings to the point that they are unacceptable.
    This happens to me in the following applications:
    * MS Word 2003
    * MS PowerPoint 2003
    I have tried these PDF creation tools:
    * Acrobat 7 Pro
    * JAWS PDF Creator 3.60
    * Bullzip PDF Printer 6.0
    Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a solution?
    Thanks.

    Well we can color this one solved. What I figured out I can do is have the application tell Word to print-to-file using an Apple LaserWriter (or other PostScript) printer, and put the resulting file in a folder that is being watched by Distiller. Distiller then converts the PS document to PDF and I'm in business.
    So no change in the user process, and no need to crack open a new API and add it to the existing application. Works for me.
    Thanks to all for the suggestions and specific links and other information of interest...

  • How to use/create icons with transparent background ?

    I would like to use icons with transparent background on JButtons, but I can't find how to do it. Until now, I've been using the ImageIcon class to create icons from GIF images. These images were created with MSPaint (sorry, I don't know what I could have used instead of that). Here is how I create my buttons :
    bPencil = new JButton(new ImageIcon("Pencil.GIF"));What could I do to make the background transparent and/or what software could I use instead of M$Paint ?
    P.S. : sorry if my question seems silly, but I'm a newbie in Java coding...

    Transparent images are GIF (256 colours) and PNG (true-colour, half transparency).
    You can store the image with your code, *.class files. You then even can deliver all inside a clickable, executable .jar file.
    This kind of usage is called "resource," and hence use getResource like this:
        java.net.URL imgURL = getClass().getResource("pencil.gif");
        ImageIcon icon = null;
        if (imgURL != null) {
            icon = new ImageIcon(imgURL, description);
        }You can use paths.
    There exist versions of MSPaint that easily loose their transparent colour on saving.
    For GIFs try internet palettes, or try to save as PNG (recent version).
    Start with a transparent image from elsewhere.

  • Creating a 1 pt. border on a transparent background??

    I'm wondering if there is a simple way to create a 1 pt. border on my transparent background. I want this as a "cutting guide", but my "inside edit/stroke" is not working on the transparent b/g.
    Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    On a blank layer:
    Select > All
    Select > Modify > Contract > 1 px
    Invert Selection
    Edit > Fill with the color of your choice.
    It's a bit old school roundabout, but it works.

  • Creating a transparent background with a SWF file for Export to Air

    I have been trying to place a SWF with a transparent background into an image component and use as a background for a widget. When I place the swf (just a simple single frame swf file) and output with any other method the background works perfectly. If I output to air then the background is a white rectangle with only a progress bar the stays at 0%. I have tried to not embed it but I get a broken link icon in the same rectangle.
    What am I missing? Should the swf file have some special setting that I am missing?
    I am using Xcelsisus 2008 with SP1 and FP1.
    Thank you for any assistance.
    Heath

    While there is no means to be sure about the method in which SAP/BO creates their components. My assumption is that the component uses the WindowedApplication or an HTMLLoader object(more likely) to display each SWF file.
    If this is the case then it is a known limitation in Adobe Air that we may be able to overcome by trying out the methods described in the following link:   [Air Transparency Help|http://help.adobe.com/en_US/AIR/1.5/devappshtml/WS5b3ccc516d4fbf351e63e3d118666ade46-7e09.html#WS5b3ccc516d4fbf351e63e3d118676a452d-7fe5]
    Or try this link for more detail on [HTMLLoader display options within Air|http://help.adobe.com/en_US/AIR/1.5/devappshtml/WS5b3ccc516d4fbf351e63e3d118666ade46-7e79.html#WS5b3ccc516d4fbf351e63e3d118676a3e36-7ff9]
    Let me know if this works! Now I'm curious...

  • Need Transparent background for video created from Photoshop Imageready

    I created a
    a man in imageready walking across the screen with a transparent background. I exported as an .mov like I normally do and converted to a
    n F4v. But when placed in ID, the video displays with a black BG. Can anyone help? thanks

    to get the transparent effect, you actually code it into the
    surrounding .html using "wmode=transparent" Google that and you
    should fine a tutorial. Remember that when you actually put in
    wmode and its value that you need to paste it in there twice (just
    like all the other tags that are already there).

  • How do you create a transparent background in AE

    Hi--I'm using AE CS5 on a MacBook Pro and I'm brand new to using AE.
    How do you create a transparent background?
    I need it because I'm creating a shatter effect on a photo and want to import the AE movie into FCP and have it play on one layer while beneath it  another image will be seen when the shatter effect takes place.
    He'p me, cap'n!
    Thanks!

    Hey Guys, thanks for your replys!!
    Wow, there's a lot to check out there--great!
    I hope I'm on the right track, I just watched the video about preserving transparency and maybe I'm stupid, maybe cause I'm new, but I just want to be sure I'm on the right track. Sorry if my question was confusing, maybe cause I am a bit new.
    To reiterate: I want to export a short AE movie of a shatter glass effect on a picture. The background needs to be transparent because I will import the AE movie into FCP and place it as the top layer. On a layer beneath it will be video I want to seen as the shatter glass effect creates a 'hole'.
    I believe this url tells me how to do that: http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/2/930588
    Thanks again!
