Croping

How do I crop a movie recorded in 16.9 to 4.3 format without loosing the quality. I am using FCE for editing. I usually drag the clip on the canvas screen to fit the format , but I loose the quality.

What are format of this 16:9 clip and the 4:3 sequence?
4:3 is per se a standard definition sequence. So inserting a 16:9 one give you more material than needed. Set the scale of this clip in motion tab to fit the height of the canvas. Set the canvas view to 50% and turn on the wireframe. There should be material at left or right of the visible canvas zone. You should see those extra portion of the clip. Set the center point to frame the shot at his best.
But inserting 4:3 (standard def) in an HD sequence (16:9) give the problem exposed by Tom bellow.

How to retain the same resolution while croping a tiff image using jai api

Hi all,
I have designed a program to crop a tiff image.But after croping the tiff,the resultant file resolution is not the same as the original source file.
In the program,the source file Nadeshiko_v1_02.tif has the resolution(X) of 1200 DPI and resolution(Y) has 1200 DPI pixels.
But after croping the resolution of output file is 100 DPI.
Please give me some idea on how to retain the same resolution.

Select the Crop Tool and check the box [ ] Delete Cropped Pixels and you should see a reduction in file size. With the box unchecked, the data is still maintained in the document, you just can't see it.

Ipad4 camera roll pictures upload to icloud - Croped pictures reverssed

i edited pictures in ipad4, only croped the pictures, nothing else, then save to camera roll.
it looks good, and then i upload pictures to icloud or skydrive, but the pictures there changed back to original uncropped version.
i then use snapseed to do the same thing (crop), then upload, picture is good.
very upset, what happened to camera roll?

but what is the point? doesn't make sence for iphone/ipad photo aditing, as they are not for pro.

After croping a photo I sometimes cannot drag the photo to a SD chip or usb storage disk for transfer to another computer.

some photo file that are edited (croped etc) are rejected when I attempt to drag into a SD chip or usb stick. the icon show a / instead of the + and does not allow the transfer of the file. any idea why some files after editing are rejected for transfer to a S/D chip.

And what does happen?
Have you selected one of the problem photos and right clicked and said to show file and see what you get?
What else have you tried?
We can make much better guesses if we have some information other than it does not work

Croping and sizing issues

I have been using lightroom 4 for about 5 months. But I am having issues with croping and sizing of pictures. When I use the crop tool it does not always draw the picture in closer. I do shoot in RAW and not in JPEG. I was wodering if there is a setting that I am not using or its not avaiable. Also when I export out of lightroom4 and convert them from RAW to JPEG I have sizing issues depending on what size the customer orders. I have tried to export them out at certain sizes but its still not correct. The only way I have found to do it is going into photoshop and sizing them correctly but its very time consumeing . Any help would be great!!

You didn't tell us the desired output. All you said "...but its still not correct". What output are you trying to obtain?
Also, what do you mean "When I use the crop tool it does not always draw the picture in closer"? Normally, you drag a corner (or corners) of the crop rectangle to crop tighter. Are you doing this? Is it not working? Explain.

When I'm croping pictures on my iPod Touch, it crashes and turns off. Why?

Hello to everyone. I've got a weird problem on my iPod Touch, when I'm croping my pictures on the device, a white screen appears and my iPod Touch turns off. It's got iOS 5.1.1, why and how can I fix it? I've not got that problem on my iPhone 4.

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

When exactly do the port numbers change? Is it when you unplug the USB adapter and plug it back in? If so, it could be that your OS has not released the previous port numbers and therefore assigns higher numbers.
This could also be an issue with the driver of the third party (keyspan) device. Please make sure you have the most updated version of the keyspan driver (version 2.1).
A simple workaround to this problem may be to use the VISA Find Resources VI to programmatically find the instruments.

Croped image after using "Basic 3D Swivel"

Hello there,
I've used a "Basic 3D Swivel" effect on a picture and noticed that the top gets croped off.
Maybe someone has an idea on what's going on here.

*UPDATE: Problem solved.
Looking for a solution as well...
I figured out, that it's only getting cropped when the footage's size is equal to or greater than than that of the sequence.
In the picture at the top the sequence has a resolution of 1920x1080. Notice how the left video stays untouched while the right one gets cropped. The left one has a native resolution of 1280x720 while the right one is in 1920x1080.
/edit: Found a solution:
dradeke's workaround should work fine, as well. But if you don't want to nest your clip for whatever reason you might have: You just have to add a "Transform" effect ABOVE your "Basic 3D" one and do all the 'motion' related attributes (scaliing, position, etc...) with this one.

Feature Request - better croping, focus patterns,focal length selections?

Tool specific Keyboard shortcuts: It would be helpful to have popup clues about keyboard shortcuts. For example, when using the crop tool, it is not obvious that typing an "X" will change the crop tool from a portrait to landscape mode or repeatedly pressing "O" will cycle through a number of grids. (Thank you Matt!)
Crop at other than "Fit" setting: Other crop tool request - allow crop to work on image at settings other than "fit" I may be able to get a more accurate crop at 1:2, etc. Otherwise I have to crop an image roughly, make a virtual copy and then crop again. Is there a better way to do this?
Show Focus Points on request: If you shoot wildlife with a long lens, a slight error in focus can ruin the shot. I review my bad shots to determine patterns of error in focusing. It would be helpful to see the focus points that were used in Lightroom, (e.g. killer whales move differently than an egret....) I assume this is stored in the metadata. I'd love to be able to do this in Lightroom.
Add Focal Length to filterable metadata fields: It would help to be able to see the various focal lengths used during a shoot, just like you can look at apertures (i.e. select folder for shoot, turn on filters, select aperture in the metadata and wallah! you can see the distribution of apertures used during a shoot.) This reminds you to mix it up and/or helps with lens selection. Is there a way to do this now?
My apologies if these features are available and I just haven't found them yet.

P.S. Thank you for the wonderful new features. I can't wait to convert my existing catalogs. I love the new import dialog. Now I can organize my backup copy in a logical fashion. When I'm in the field on a multi-day shoot, I don't want to risk reorganizing the backup. Now I don't need to. Enough has been said about noise reduction and better rendition. Thank you!!!

Issues with croping in Lightroom 5

I was working in LR 5 and was sidetracked for a few hours. when I went back to working on some photos later, all of a sudden the crop tool had changed??
Now instead of one rectangle that I could adjust from either side, independently, I have two parallel crosses on my photo that I can not adjust one side without the other moving???
And there is suddenly NO "DONE" button at the bottom right of the photo to click on to conclude the cropping work.
How can this change in only a couple of hours time and why??? how can I get my old familiar unrestricted crop back??

Click on the Padlock in the Cropping Tool Panel to unlock it. [ A ]

My guess is that you started typing a word while having the crop tool open. A word with "at" or "ta" in it.

CS5 croped images go blank.

CS5 when I try to crop a jpg or psd file the image on my work area and the thumbs in layers go blank. When I hit "step backward" they reappear.
Any ideas?

Check the width, height or resolution fields in the tool options bar while the crop tool is selected.
Perhaps you have some very small values in one of those fields.
Anyway, you can press the Clear button in the tool options bar to clear those fields.

Lightroom LR 3.4.1 Exporting Megapixels and Croping & Resizing

I crop in most of my images. After exporting at Image Sizing/Resize To Fit UNChecked, JPG, 100% Quality, and dpi 300, my cropped images are way below the normal non cropped images size.
So, I recently started trying using resize to fit, selecting megapixels, and setting that to 12.2, and the file sizes increased back to normal uncropped sizes.
12.2 is my sensor size, so I thought it was not really losing any info.
My question is whether this is a good way to resize for prints up to at least 13X19 if needed?
I know Elements has a resize (haven't used it) but in the workflow, I'd like to stay with LR if possible.
Is it decent resizing?

That's a little scary because I can crop anything from 50% to reaching a couple of soccer players across field (even with my 70-200) and the cropped image could be 25% of the total image (sometimes slightly smaller).
?Would it be fair to say that since I am starting with a 12mp camera, that a 50% crop, and resizing by the megapixel choice, would be the approximate quality of a 6mp camera, and still give a good 8X10 or even 11X14?
That brings up another question.
?When I do choose megapixels as my resizing choice, and given my using 25%-50% of the image in a crop, should I choose 6mp instead of the 12mp that it was originally shot at?
I have been using 12mp as the size I wanted (simply to try to get it back to my camera size), and now I don't know what that quality looks like when my soccer customers placed their orders. They have order from 4X5 to 8X10's already, probably from a variety of crops.

What's with the croping and then no zoom out option?

I am using a blackberry Z10 which i recently bought Hoping for an upgrade but it has appeared to be that this device is ill programmed.
I now have to crop a picture for every single action i take with the picture. Before it would be just for BBM profile pictures and whatsapp. It irritates the hell out of me to now have crop a wallpaper,facebook profile picture etc..and THEN have no option to zoom the picture out resulting in loss of approximately 80% of the good picture. This is something i would typically do smoothly on my previous phone( Blackberry Torch 9810).
You came out with one of the leading best smartphones in the whole world and you can't tell me you can not fix this.
You can fix this,i know so.

Croping and resizing a video.

Example: I record a sequence with a green screen and a person talking. The recording is in 1920x1080 pixels. After the keying and editing the movie I would only output the person talking, let's say 700x1080.I had no problem to do it with FLV since there is a "Resize Video" option on the Media encoder. I haven't found that on other export settings, e.g. H264, mp4. There it let's me only do the given aspect ratio of 1.777777... or 1.33333...If I try to force it into another format by using the width/height entry, it comes an error "invalid frame size".
What I would like is a video that has a different aspect ratio than 16:9 or 4:3, a cropped version in the mp4 format but not using FLV.

Create a new sequence using the frame size you want. Copy the footage you have to the new sequence and scale it accordingly using the scale tool (under Motion in the video effects panel). Export the new sequence.
