Cross project mappings

Hello all, I have, probably a configuration, but I see it as a mapping question.
I have two mapping workbench perfects Bank and Cash. The Bank project maps, among other things, a BankAccount object. In the Cash project, I need to map a CashDeposit object, that has a BankAccount object in it. I have these as separate work bench projects because they represent separate schemas and separate initiatives.
How do I tell the Cash project to look the Bank project for descriptors on how to build the child BankAccount object?
Thanks,
Jay

James,
Thanks for the information. I did as you suggested, and deactivated the BankAccount Descriptor. When I do so, I get an error in the objects that use BankAccount: "bankAccount References BankAccount which is not active"
With this error I will not be able export my deployment descriptor, correct? If I activate the descriptor, then I have to fully map it, or it errors, which I do not want to do in this project.
Also, yes you are correct, both descriptors will be in the same sessions.xml when it is a running application.

  • Creating a static library with XCode cross-project references.

I have a project and am trying to move a lot of the code into a static shared library, and added a cross project reference to this library in my app.
However, when I moved a file from my app to the library (removing the reference in my app and moving the file to the library's project directory), and try building my app, I get compiler error messages as if the file I have moved doesn't exist.
When I build my library project, it says the build has succeeded, but the library.a file remains red. It is also red in the my referencing app project.
If anybody has any experience setting up cross-project references in XCode, I'd appreciate any help.
If it helps identify where the problem is, I've performed the following steps to setup the library and cross-project reference:
    1. I created a new Cocoa Touch static library project in XCode which would house the shared code.
    2. I changed the global settings in XCode to place the build products in a shared build directory (rather that the project directory), and made sure the intermediate build files are placed with the build products.
I changed this using the Preferences menu, but have also gone into the project info for both my app project and the library project and made made sure it is set to place the build projects in the custom shared build directory.
    3. I then added a Source Tree, and made sure that the Path of the project directory of the library project.
    4. I added a project reference to the library project's .xcodeproj file in my application project. I changed the library project reference so that it was relative to JIGSAW24LIBRARY.
    5. I configured the library dependencies by going to my app's target's info, and adding a direct dependency to the library project.
    6. In my app's info build tab, I changed the user header search paths so that it uses the search tree I setup (I used the $(SEARCHTREE_NAME) notation, but checked that this resolves to a valid path). I also made sure that the Always Search User Paths checkbox is checked, and that the Library Search Paths is blank.
    7. I click-dragged the library.a file under the library project so that it was under the Link Binary With Library sub folder of my app's target.
For step 5, I've also tried adding the reference to the other project as a linked library, rather than a direct dependency, but this doesn't seem to work either.

I managed to fix the problem. The steps above seem to be correct. The problem seems to be related to the source trees that are defined...
I was previously using an absolute path for the source tree which pointed at the folder containing the library project. I changed this to a relative path to the same folder (relative from the calling project) and this seems to fix it.
I'd double checked that the absolute path specified was correct, so it looks like the user header search paths specified must be relative to the current project.

  • Alternatives to Cross Project Links

    Hi,
Cross Project Links (External Tasks) is an out-of-the-box feature that allows to create dependencies between workplans.
The basic functionality has not changed from Project Server 2003 (or ever in earlier versions) to Project Server 2013, including Project Online.
Unfortunately it would be an understatement to say that it is not the ideal tool for creating dependencies of this sort.  For example, There is no mechanism to preview and approve schedule changes (except the notorious "Links Between Project"
form), creating a dependency requires opening the all related workplans, there are many bugs associate to that, and this list goes on.
I'm looking for a 3rd party add-on that provides an alternative to Cross Project Links. What other tools would you recommend?
p.s. I've heard of 'TPG ProjectLink'. Had anyone tried it?

    Dominic,
    I have to be honest
that I'm familiar only with the deliverables feature on Project Server 2007, and not with any updates on 2010 and 2013 versions.
    I have invested many
hours in investigation of this tool and read documentation by Microsoft and bloggers, and reach the conclusion that this is not the right tool for me.
    As far as I know,
the deliverables feature has not been changed dramatically in the 2013 version, therefore I'm looking the alternatives.

  • How many cross-project links are too many for dynamic Master-Subproject plan?

    Hello
We currently have a dynamic master-subproject plan and resource pool, with 8 workstream plans and approximately 150 program milestones in the master.  We are considering creating cross-project links to the 150 program milestones - from the master
into the sub-projects.  I have read that it is best practice to keep cross-project links to a minimum.  Is what we are considering too much?  Will 150 links from master to sub-projects risk a corrupted plan?
    Thanks in advance...
    Art

Yes the cross-project links also use old DDE technology which is where the file corruption risk is. Move, rename, overwrite or store on a WAN and the file corruption dice roll. Its when not if, but you can be lucky and survive many months.
What do I do? If Project Online/Server and its deliverables feature is not available then being a bit of a VBA whiz:
I copy all milestones weekly to SQL Server using a VBA macro.
In other projects I have a macro to select one of those milestones and record teh project number, title and task unique id into a text field.
I then have a macro that finds all tasks with data from step 2 and reads the latest date from SQL Server and updates the task start date.
This works perfectly and has zero corruption risk as the only thing I store is text data in a custom field. I've supported some large SAP programmes with 10 files and many thousands of tasks using this technique. Oh, yet another macro creates static (so
no links) masters each week for reporting purposes from all sub-projects.
Art, with the number of files and links it might be time to experiment with Project Online.

  • Cross Project Linking

I am familiar with creating a Master Plan and linking milestones between sub projects and the master plan but can a single Project Manager create a link to another project plan without creating a master plan shell to facilitate the actions required?
Is the only way to do this is to add the filepath of the other project (if known) into the predecessors or successorrs column or is there a smarter way?
    Thanks
    Steve

    Hi Steve,
As soon as the project manager can open (in edit mode) the 2 projects, he just has to open a temporary empty project, insert the 2 projects, link the milestones, close the temporary master project without saving it but saving the 2 projects. A more tedious
way as you said is to type directly the file path if known.

  • Cross Project Percent Completes

I am developing a MS Project 2010 schedule in which the client would like to see an overall percent complete for process areas that repeat in lower level sub-projects.
For example, the project breaks down into system types, then individual systems within those types, then process areas, such as CM, Maintenance, Provisioning, Supply Chain, etc., with each of these process areas breaking down into individual activities. What
I am trying to develop is a percent complete for the process areas at the top most level (across the system types), based on the percent completes for those process areas at the individual system level. The verticals roll up fine (percent complete for the
process area within the system to the system, then to the overall system type, then to the overall project), but I'm trying to do a more horizontal view of the project's status. Never done anything like this before, so any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Baltjazz08,
Here is all relevant information about outline codes (both process and configuration). Those links are for 2003 but applicable to 2007, 2010 or 2013.
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-ca/project-help/defining-the-structure-of-your-project-with-custom-outline-codes-HA001020301.aspx
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/project-help/create-an-outline-code-HP045331925.aspx
Then I'm not sure that it will help in doing what you need. Creating a custom field for entering % complete on tasks you're interested in would be the best solution. Anyway be careful concerning the rollup for total. If you choose average, it might not give
a proper result, since if 2 tasks have a different quantities of work, the % complete of the summary task will not be the average of the 2 % complete.
An idea would be to use a WBS for all projects, containing all process areas. Then using SSRS or Excel services reporting capabilities, you'll be able to extract horizontal % complete of process areas through your projects.
    Hope this helps.

  • Cross project teams in cPro

cPro supports roles, staffings, tasks, and assignment of tasks to roles.
    That's almost all I need.
However, i am now thinking how to realize teams that are working on multiple projects. The team and its members shall be defined once, and they should be staffed to multiple projects.
Can I staff something else that a business partner to a role? Or can there be a business partner that does not represent a person, but a team? Or can I use cPro user groups for this?
    Any other suggestions?

    Hi Daniel,
The user-group in cProject is for other purpose, the authorisation.
If you use the RPM Fast Entry Screen for staffing, then you can create such team, and include the team-members (BP) and then staffing them to different cprojects.
    Kind regards,

  • Project templates for FrameMaker to RH mappings

    Hello,
I just noticed a sample script installed with Robohelp called Project Template Generator (Project Template Generator.jsx).
Does anyone know what this script does exactly and how I would import it into another project?
I would like to have a way in which to save all my project mappings, and the Save Settings to and subsequent Load settings from functions accessible in the Project settings dialog doesn't work for my FM template (our company template is a bit complicated and has a lot of tags). I've contacted Adobe support and they couldn't get this feature to work with my template either, so I'm really interested in the Project Template Generator script...I know how to run a script, but I don't know what this script does exactly, and how I'd import it into a new project.
    Thanks in advance.
    Sue

It is intended to create a new RoboHelp project with all the same settings and content that are defined in the template. It is described on my site at http://www.grainge.org/pages/authoring/project_templates/templates.htm
There's just one teensy weensy problem, the script is flawed!
I managed to get the replacement script referenced to work by immediately closing the new project, trashing the CPD and reopening the project but that was in simple tests.
I don't know if it would hold the settings you want.
Take a look at what is on my site and post back any questions. Right now though I am off to bed as it's late here.

  • Project Server 2010 - Error 20010 with a master project and 3 sub-projects during publication

    Hi,
    Here is the situation :
One master project with three sub projects.
Sub projects are really similar (Same ressources and nearly same tasks but only the first contain real work for now).
Sub projects got no sub projects nor links between projects.
The owner of the master project got read rights through projects permissions on sub projects.
Sub projects are link in "read only".
We applied Project Server 2010 SP2 last week end and the issue appeared monday.
    Here are the symptoms :
When we link only one sub project (Doesn't matter which one), the owner can publish, no problems.
With 2 sub projects, the error may occur.
With 3 sub projects, the error always occurs.
With admin rights, the error doesn't occur.
    Here is the error :
    ID : 20010 (0x4E2A)
Description : You don't have required permissions to perform the action (Average traduction)
    Detail : <detail><errinfo><general><class name="Project"><error id="20010" name="GeneralSecurityAccessDenied" uid="19515c1d-2624-466f-953a-b7fc67337b81"/></class></general></errinfo></detail>
I'm unable to determine which sub project is the culprit, if there is one, as it's working when I link only one of them.
    Thanks for your time !

    Fylim --
If the project manager in question does not need to edit any of the three projects, the PM does not need to have Read/Write access to any of the three projects.  Because you said that the PM needs to set links in all three projects, this means that
the PM will be editing all three projects.  In order to edit the three projects, the PM must have Read/Write access to all three.  Setting cross-project links constitutes editing of the projects, which is why the PM must have Read/Write permission.
    Make sense?
Regarding SP2, I am not aware that this would change anything, but I could be wrong.  The reality is that regardless of which SP you have applied to Microsoft Project and Project Server 2010, the PM in this situation MUST have Read/Write access to the
projects that he/she needs to edit with cross-project links.  Hope this helps.

  • Project Expenditure inquiry doesn't show expenditures after 12.1.3 upgrade

    Hi,
I am puzzled with this issue here. We are currently in the UAT phase R12 upgrade (11.5.10.2 to 12.1.3) some reason one of the super user is not able to look at the expenditures using the expenditure inquiry screen. • Project Server or Project Online

Since we do not have SharePoint and it's not coming soon, what options do we have for Project Server or Project Online?  Will either work without SharePoint?
The biggest need for project management is to allow the staff assigned to tasks to be able to update their portion of the project.  More and more of our project managers are using MS Project Professional at their desks.   Any recommendations?

    Doug:
Project Online/Project Server are SharePoint applications. You cannot have one without the other. If you are not familiar with these technologies, I suggest that you consider at least discussing your direction with a certified partner. It may be that you
can accomplish what you want using Project Pro and SharePoint online with Project Online. You can synchronize an individual Project with a SharePoint task list and users can update their assignments in SharePoint. If you need Enterprise features, cross-project
reporting, resource management and the like, Project Online is the way to go.

  • Saving Error in Project Server 2013, Need Help!

    Hey All,
I am running into issues with a Projects saving from Project Pro 2013 to our Project Server 2013 Farm.
It is strange, when someone tries to save a project out of Project Pro 2013 to Project Server, it will run through the "Synchronizing Data to the Server", and then bombs out with error
    Job Type: Save
    Error ID:9000(0x2328)
The project could not be saved to the server, Etc..
My understanding is that this is a generic save error that could mean many things.
In the ULS logs under "Active Cache Save" , I am getting:
"Cancelling correlation 1339927b-e9e5-e311-941d-00155d2bc10d as save is an overwrite or resubmit"
What is strange at this point is if I check the project back in, and re-open/re-checkout the project, and try to save again, it is successful in saving.
Just a few details about the environment:
Project Server Version: 2013 RTM (In the process of upgrading)
SharePoint Version: 2013 RTM (In the process of upgrading)
Project Structure: One Master Project with all other projects being subprojects of the master
    Published Status: All Published
SQL Version: SQL Server 2012 SP1
    User Count: About 5 currently
Deployment: 1 WFE, 1 APP Server, 1 SQL Server
It is just odd, as it seems to be completely random. We have tried clearing caches out to see if that resolves it but it did not. It is just odd that it takes two saves for it to actually work correctly, and is problematic as the many times they are saving
from the master and it bombs out there.
I am not sure how it could be an issue as it is usually just a single user working on the individual subprojects.
Maybe it is an issue in the RTM? I couldn't find any info in any of the CU's or SP's that addresses this directly
Has anyone seen this, or have any suggestions?
MS Support has not been any help at all.
    Thanks all

I have heard of issues with Master and Sub-Projects and both being published to Project Server, as a rule it is a feature I learnt to avoid as a result of bad experiences with earlier versions of Project Server.
Whilst this will not resolve the issue you have encountered the following suggestion may help you avoid pain in the future and leverages the potential of Project Server to represent common attributes for projects.
Typically a Master/Sub Project environment is intended to reflect projects that are commonly aligned - it is not unusual for a Master Project to represent a programme and for there to be multiple sub-projects forming the programme - there can be programme
level events that have multiple predecessors from multiple sub-projects.
Rather than create a master and sub-project situation I would suggest looking to define two Enterprise Custom Project fields to assist with such situations. The first being a Project Field called Programme that has a look up table with a list of current
programmes you can select from. The second Project Field would be a Programme Status Field  with an associated lookup table with 3 values, Master, Sub-Project, Standalone.
You can have a project represent the Master (Programme) project and open it and all sub-projects in the programme (albeit this would have to be a one by one action to begin with). With all the projects open go and open a New Window in Project Professional
and elect to include all the open projects in the new window - this will create a new project with all the selected projects showing as
"embedded objects" and then create dependencies from sub-projects to programme level events in the Master Project (I would suggest what I call
"one way traffic" when creating "cross project dependencies" to avoid further headaches). Close the project, you will be prompted to save changes which you should do but do not save the new window
"container" project. The dependencies across the projects will persist - in each project you will be able to see external successors - tasks in the master project. In the master project you will be able to see external predecessors.
In PWA you can create Project Centre Programme views that filter to exclude projects that ARE Standalone and group them by Programme and sort by Programme Status Field - this will ensure that the "Master" sits at the top of the pile for each programme grouping.
Just a suggestion - I hope the issue you have encountered is resolved soon.

  • Why does my sub-projects open in read only when master is opened

I have created a master schedule with 4 sub-projects inserted as read only.
My problem is that when the master is opened the sub-projects will only open in read only so PMs can not update their schedules when requried.
I have sold my company on using master schedules and ow it doesnt work any better.  I have not had this problem previous using MSP 2010 so can anyone help me please.

    Krys,
You are using a dynamic master and that may not be necessary nor the best choice in your situation. You say you use the master as a reporting tool and for creating links between subprojects. I have a suggestion. When you need to create cross-project links,
go ahead and create a dynamic master, make the links and then save, but don't close, each the subproject file. That will preserve the links you just make. Now close the master and when it asks if you want to save changes to all files, answer "no to all". Finally
delete the master, it is no longer needed to maintain those links and in fact, having a dynamic master creates another level in the linking structure and thus increases the chance of file corruption.
When you need to do your reporting, create a static master. Simply uncheck the "link to project" option in the lower right corner of the Insert Project window. That will create a separate file that is a snapshot in time of all the subproject files. The advantage
is that you have not created a linked structure and thus have not added to the corruption dice roll, as Rod Gill (MVP) likes to say. And yes, you will have to create a new static master each reporting period, but that is easily automated with a recorded macro,
if doing it manually is a burden.
    Hope this helps.
