CryptDecrypt function failing on Windows Server 2012
Hi,
I have a sample program which does encryption / decryption.
This program works on Win7 and Win8.1 but fails on Windows Server 2012.
Please can somebody help me on resolving this issue?
const char KEY_FILE[255] = "C:\\key.txt";
In Constructor:
dwResult= 0;
hProv = 0;
hKey = 0;
hSessionKey = 0;
cbBlob = 0;
pbBlob = NULL;
cbBlob = file_length(KEY_FILE);
pbBlob = (BYTE*)malloc(cbBlob + 1);
memset(pbBlob, 0, cbBlob + 1);
FILE *fp = fopen(KEY_FILE, "rb");
if (fp) {
fread(pbBlob, 1, cbBlob, fp);
fclose(fp);
} else {
free(pbBlob);
pbBlob = NULL;
if (!CryptAcquireContext(&hProv, NULL, MS_DEF_PROV, PROV_RSA_FULL, 0))
dwResult = GetLastError();
if (dwResult == NTE_BAD_KEYSET)
if (!CryptAcquireContext(&hProv, NULL, MS_DEF_PROV, PROV_RSA_FULL, CRYPT_NEWKEYSET))
dwResult = GetLastError();
MessageBox("Error [0x%x]: CryptAcquireContext() failed.", "Information", MB_OK);
return;
} else {
dwResult = GetLastError();
return;
if (pbBlob) {
if (!CryptImportKey(hProv, pbBlob, cbBlob, 0, 0, &hSessionKey))
dwResult = GetLastError();
MessageBox("Error [0x%x]: CryptImportKey() failed.", "Information", MB_OK);
return;
} else {
if (!CryptImportKey(hProv, PrivateKeyWithExponentOfOne, sizeof(PrivateKeyWithExponentOfOne), 0, 0, &hKey))
dwResult = GetLastError();
MessageBox("Error CryptImportKey() failed.", "Information", MB_OK);
return;
if (!CryptGenKey(hProv, CALG_RC4, CRYPT_EXPORTABLE, &hSessionKey))
dwResult = GetLastError();
MessageBox("Error CryptGenKey() failed.", "Information", MB_OK);
return;
//{{AFX_DATA_INIT(CCryptoEncryptionDlg)
m_cipher = _T("");
m_clear = _T("Encrypt me");
When I click on Encryption Button:
UpdateData();
unsigned long length = m_clear.GetLength() +1;
unsigned char * cipherBlock = (unsigned char*)malloc(length);
memset(cipherBlock, 0, length);
memcpy(cipherBlock, m_clear, length -1);
if (!CryptEncrypt(hSessionKey, 0, TRUE, 0, cipherBlock, &length, length))
dwResult = GetLastError();
MessageBox("Error CryptEncrypt() failed.", "Information", MB_OK);
return;
m_cipher = cipherBlock;
m_clear = "";
free(cipherBlock);
UpdateData(FALSE);
When I click on Decrypt button:
UpdateData();
unsigned long length = m_cipher.GetLength() +1;
unsigned char * cipherBlock = (unsigned char*)malloc(length);
memset(cipherBlock, 0, length);
memcpy(cipherBlock, m_cipher, length -1);
int retVal = CryptDecrypt(hSessionKey, 0, TRUE, CRYPT_DECRYPT_RSA_NO_PADDING_CHECK, (BYTE*)cipherBlock, &length);
if (!retVal)
dwResult = GetLastError();
MessageBox("Error CryptDecrypt() failed.", "Information", MB_OK);
return;
dwResult = GetLastError();
m_clear = cipherBlock;
m_cipher = "";
free(cipherBlock);
UpdateData(FALSE);
The source is from http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/11578/Encryption-using-the-Win-Crypto-API
I just got the source code from above link and compiled in VS2012. The same code works as-is in Win8.1 but fails in loading itself in Windows Server 2012.
Thanks in advance.

Raj
Windows CE is pretty old but I see that used a bit in 3rd world markets where people are not rich enough to afford more modern gear.
I use 7-zip for backups, and the SDK is open source which means it can be used in another project such a specialized backup or other tool
7-zip has the AES in the SDK which is been checked as solid.

What is the effect if I Raise my domain functional level to Windows Server 2012 R2 ?
Hi,
my current servers:
Domain Controllers= Windows Server 2012 R2 (current domain functional level is windows 2008 R2)
Mail servers= Exchange 2010 SP3 on Windows 2008 R2
Lync= Lync 2010 on Windows server 2008 R2
What is the effect if I Raise my domain functional level to Windows Server 2012 R2 ?
I am very worried about Exchange & Lync if we do this action
please adviceDo not raise the forest functional level higher if you have or will have any domain controllers running
an earlier version of Windows Server , which is (windows Nt4.0, Window 2000 or windows 2003)
but as a matter of fact I dont see any of those in your network so you can easily upgrade the funtional level without any issues
Listed below link has the table which shows the effects of upgrading the domain functional levels to Windows 2012

ProClarity 6.3 PAS install fails on Windows Server 2012
We are trying to install PAS 6.3 on Windows Server 2012 and the install fails with the following error
The following requirements are missing:
Windows Server 2003 SP1
We have successfully installed on Windows Server 2008 R2, so it really isn't a Windows Server 2003 SP1 issue.
Has anyone successfully installed on Windows Server 2012? Is there a way to force the installer not to check for the OS?
Thanks.
KevinI have a PAS server running in Windows 2012, by doing exactly the same pre-requisites that you do in Windows 2008 r2 (iis, Framework, SQL ADO 2005 / 2008). With the Windows Server 2003 SP1 message you can avoid it by doing a really simple thing that
is right click the setup file --> properties, and head to the "Compatibility Tab" and run it with compatibility mode Windows 7, also run it with Admin permissions. This let you pass by the message and let you install the product. Remember, after the
installation, you need to check all the IIS config, folder permissions, that you did in Windows 2008 x64 installation. Also, the App pool needs to work with .NET 2.0 not 4.0.
Good luck!

VMM Agent install fails on Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V
Hi,
We are unable to install VMM 2012 R2 agent on Windows Server 2012 R2 server either from VMM console or manually on the hyper-v server.

Please help on this issue.
Any help would be appreciated.

Kumaresan LakshmananSo, I've managed to research this some more since Thursday and I've come to the conclusion that Hyper-V does a horrible job of supporting Qualcomm NIC cards. That's the only thing I can conclude as far as where the issue is originating. I've read many
post and walkthroughs but nothing that has helped. The issue wasn't with any settings in the domain controller. The issue was that there really is a slow connection originating at the domain controller that is a VM and has network connectivity through the
virtual switch from Hyper-V. So, next question is, how do I get the DC to have better connectivity through the NIC that Hyper-V won't give it? If hyper-v would allow passthrough, this would be so much simpler. VM-ware is looking really good at this point.
Im disappointed in MS right now. -

Windows 8.1 SOFTWARE registry hive load failed on Windows Server 2012
Hello,
I am participated in custom Windwows Software backup/restore project development that requires load of Windows SOFTWARE/SYSTEM registry hives from target OS system drive connected to Windows system.
On all Windows version except Windows 8.1 program works correctly but when host system (on that programm run on) is Windows Server 2012 or Windows 8 and target system is Windows 8.1 registry hive load failed with following error:
Failed to load f:\Windows\System32\config\software: [1009] The configuration registry database is corrupt.
After run of 'chkdsk /r' error still remained. All requred security privileges (SE_BACKUP, SE_RESTORE) are applied. All systems are 64-bit.
Generally even system registry editor (regedit) could not open SOFTWARE hive from Windows 8.1 with following error:
Cannot Load f:\Windows\System32\config\software: Error while loading hive.
But when host system is Windows 7 or Windwos Server 2008 then SOFTWARE hive loaded without any problem.
So is there some Windows 8/8.1 registry hives validation mechanism or additional security checks tha prevents load of registry hives fromother OS instance?Sorry for later response. I was busy with other tasks.
The procMon tool shows RegLoadKey is failed when it tried to load the hive on Windows 8.1 (8.1 based WinPE also). On Windows 7, I didn't see the error (Shows Success instead of REGISTRY CORRUPT). Once the hive is load & unloaded on Windows 7 OS, the
check sum of the hive is changed, and I can load the updated hive with regedit in Windows 8.1 OS.

SQL Server 2008 R2 & 2008 R2 SP1 installation fails in Windows server 2012
Hi All,
I have a strange issue here. I have a Windows server 2012 VM where i want to deploy SQL 2008 R2 Enterprise edition.
When i Run the setup every thing goes fine and during the installation wizard i get this error " The Folder path Program files contains invalid characteristics. I get this error 3 - 4 times during the installation wizard and the installation fails.
Below is the screenshot for the same.
So i checked few articles regarding the compatibility issue and found the below article and upgraded my setup to SQL 2008 R2 SP1 using the below article.
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/petersad/archive/2011/07/13/how-to-slipstream-sql-server-2008-r2-and-a-sql-server-2008-r2-service-pack-1-sp1.aspx
Again i still see the same above errors and with that a new error related to a MOF File.
Below are the contents of the error logs. Can some one assist on this issue.

verified the signing certificate has a 1024 bit key. I have imported the certificate into the server's Trusted Publishers and Trusted Root CA stores for the computer. When I attempt to publish a Flash update with Full content I receive the following
error:
2015-02-13 23:00:48.724 UTC Error Scup2011.21 Publisher.PublishPackage PublishPackage(): Operation Failed with Error: Verification of file signature failed for file:
\\SCCM\UpdateServicesPackages\a2aa8ca4-3b96-4ad2-a508-67a6acbd78a4\3f82680a-9028-4048-ba53-85a4b4acfa12_1.cab
I have redone the certificates three times with no luck. I can import metadata, but any attempt to download content results in the verification error.
TIAHi Joyce,
This is embarrassing, I used that very post as my guide when deploying my certificate templates, but failed to change the bit length to 2048. Thank you for being my second set of eyes.
I changed my certificate key bit length to 2048, deleted the old cert from all certificate stores, acquired the a new signing cert, verified the key length was 2048, exported the new cert to pfx and cer files, imported into my Trusted publishers
and Trusted Root Authorities stores, reconfigured SCUP to use the new pfx file, rebooted the server and attempted to re-publish the updates with the following results:
2015-02-16 13:35:44.006 UTC Error Scup2011.4 Publisher.PublishPackage PublishPackage(): Operation Failed with Error: Verification of file signature failed for file:
\\SCCM\UpdateServicesPackages\a2aa8ca4-3b96-4ad2-a508-67a6acbd78a4\3f82680a-9028-4048-ba53-85a4b4acfa12_1.cab.
Is there a chance this content was already created and signed with the old cert, so installing the new cert has no effect? In ConfigMgr software updates I see 4 Flash updates, all marked Metadata Only (because they were originally published as "Automatic."
No Flash updates in the ConfigMgr console are marked as downloaded. I can't find any documentation on how the process of using SCUP for downloading content for an update marked Metadata Only actually works.
Comments and suggestions welcome. -
Windows Server 2012 R2 - ALL HF's Failing to install as "Does Not Apply to this computer"
Hi,
A general question about hot fix installs.
I have multiple servers that are all Windows 2012 R2. They do not have internet connections, so I have to install the Hotfixes manually. I download the HF's from the ISO download page (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/913086) every month. I collect them and install in a bulk install during a release cycle ( a couple times a year). I just realized that NO HF's have installed since JUNE 2014. Every HF that shows up in WindowsServer2012R2 directory fail to install with a message of "The update is not applicable to your computer". Which is fine if that was true, but.... I get this message for every HF from the ISO's since June 2014. NOT one HF thinks it is applicable to my computer. Could that be the case? No HF's apply to my Server 2012 systems since June of 2014?
This is my system info, and below that is the results from attempting to install 95 HF's.

The Volume Shadow Copy service initially was running under the context of System, so we thought that ‘System’ doesn’t have permissions to access network shares.
When the Volume Shadow Copy service was running under the context of System, this was the error logged:
“failed with following error code '0x8078014B' (There was a failure in creating a directory on the backup storage location.).”
Which is likely due to not having permissions to write to the network location.
This is a scheduled backup trying to write to a network location, so we changes the service to run under the context of an account that does have permissions to write to the network share.
Then the error changed to this:
“failed with following error code '0x8078006B' (Windows Backup failed to create the shared protection point on the source volumes.).”

We aren’t really seeing anything that gives any hint on what the issue is.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance!We are trying to back up folders/files from 2 local drives (C: & D:), both of which have only 10% space used, and 100 GB free.
We are attempting to back the files up to a Remote Shared File (and there is 100+ GB free space out there).
If we try another network location, we receive the exact same error.
This is Windows Server 2012, not running Hyper-V and is a physical server not a VM.
Thank you for the link.

My msi is a 32 bit setup.
When I install it on a 32 bit machine with Windows XP it works fine .
I tried to install it on a 64 bit machine with windows server 2008 and it succeeds
While running my setup on a 64 bit machine with Windows server 2012 R2 it failes and I get the folloawing message:
"Registry object reference not set to an instance of an object"
Then the setup exits and leaves the app partially installed
I tried searching for known problems over the net, but found nothing
I will be happy to get some advice
Thanks
LioraSounds like you are trying to update a registry object that is not there.
Is this your own msi, or is it from a third party application? If third party, check with them to see if they support it on 2012 or if they have a known workaround.
If it is your own msi, sounds like it is time to debug it.

Hi, I'm having a problem in a VM Guest cluster using Windows Server 2012 R2 and virtual disk sharing enabled.
It's a SQL 2012 cluster, which has around 10 vhdx disks shared this way. all the VHDX files are inside LUNs on a SAN. These LUNs are presented to all clustered members of the Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster, via Cluster Shared Volumes.
Yesterday happened a very strange problem, both the Quorum Disk and the DTC disks got the information completetly erased. The vhdx disks themselves where there, but the info inside was gone.
The SQL admin had to recreated both disks, but now we don't know if this issue was related to the virtualization platform or another event inside the cluster itself.
Right now I'm seen this errors on one of the VM Guest:

We don't know if this can happen again, what if this happens on disk with data?! We don't know if this is related to the virtual disk sharing technology or anything related to virtualization, but I'm asking here to find out if it is a possibility.
Any ideas are appreciated.
Thanks.

I have recently upgraded a clients servers to Windows Server 2012 & since doing so have lost the ability to scan to folder.
Both servers are domain controllers and previously on a 2008 domain controller I would have had to make the following change to allow scan to folder:
Administrative Tools
Server Manager
Features
Group Policy Manager
Forest: ...
Default Domain Policy
Computer configuration
Policies
Windows Settings
Security Settings
Local Policies
Security Options
Microsoft Network Server: Digitally Sign Communications (Always)
- Define This Policy
- Disabled
However I have applied this to the Windows 2012 server but am still unable to scan, possibly due to added layers of security in server 2012. The error on the scanner is Authentication with the destination has failed check settings.
I have also tried the following at the server:
Policies -> Security Policies
Change Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level to: Send LM & NTLM - Use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated.
Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) clients and uncheck the require 128 bit.
Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) servers and uncheck the require 128 bit
I have created a user account on the server for the ricoh and set this in the settiings of the Ricoh and verified everything is correct.
Are there any other things I have missed?I can email anybody the firmware module if interested and how to...
Tell me your model and email

Windows Server 2012 Cluster Validation Failing On List All Potential Cluster Disks
I'm in the process of setting up a new cluster using Windows Server 2012 with a view to migrate from our existing 2008 R2 cluster. I am having problems validating the storage and the wizard keeps failing on the List All Potential Cluster Disks
test (which causes all the other storage tests to be cancelled).
I'm getting the following error:
Failed while verifying removal of any Persistent Reservation on physical disk 19ba99a4 at node RC-HYPERV-3.riddlesdown.local.
When I look in validation report, disk 19ba99a4 is the management LUN (Access LUN 31 as termed by the storage software).
Looking on my 2008 R2 cluster this doesn't appear in Disk Management.
Any ideas how I can get rid of it or the error that it is causing?
Hi,
Thank you for your question.
I am trying to involve someone familiar with this topic to further look at this issue. There might be some time delay. Appreciate your patience.
Thank you for your understanding and support.
