Crystal Reports - Connecting to databases - Limit to Number of Tables?

I am using CR 2008 and attempting to build a report. The database I created access to contains over 5000 tables in the db schema. The list of tables presented in the GUI to build the report is just a portion of the total number of tables. ('A' to 'O' displays alphabetically). Is there a limit to the number of tables that can be displayed to build the contents of a report? If so, what is the limit? Is there a work around?

This is by design and a limit of how CR works due to limitation in your PC resources. CR loads all of that info into memory, if there are too many to list, and typically it's more common when using Oracle due to it's ability have thousands of tables, is in the Database connection right click on the connection and then select Options. You can add filtering to limit what you see.
Only option you have to be able to get to see all tables required for your report. Don't add tables if they are not required or if you can't link them. Work arounds are to create a collection of Stored Procedures or Views so you see just what you need.

I am working on upgrading an application that has been in use for many years. The application is written in VB6 and I have been tasked with upgrading the current application to Crystal Reports for Visual Studio. I am using Crystal Reports for VS Version 13.0.12.1494. The system's database is a Sybase SQL Anywhere 16 database with an ODBC connection using integrated login. Each of the reports has the database connection set up from within the report. There is only once database server, so each of the reports are pointing to the same DB. The database server is currently installed as a "Personal Server" with a limit of 10 connections.
I have implemented the CR viewer as part of a COM-callable wrapper that exposes a COM interface for VB6 to interact with. Inside of my viewer component is a Winform that embeds the Crystal's Report viewer. The COM interface basically maps the basic Crystal apis to methods that the VB6 can call (i.e., Load Report, Set Field Text, Update SQL Query, etc). This architecture is working as designed and the reports are displaying correctly and responding correctly to changes in queries, etc.
The issue is that after I open 9 reports, the tenth one will respond with an error indicating that the database connection limit has been reached. The database connections used by the reports aren't released until after the application is closed. The application is designed for a secure environment that prohibits the non-administrative user from accessing the systems desktop, so asking the user tor restart the application after 10 reports isn't a viable option.
I have checked and database connection pooling is turned off for the SQL Anywhere 16 driver.
I have been digging on this for a few days and have tried adding code in the FormClosed event to close and dispose of the Report Document as follows:

Thanks so much for the quick reply. Unfortunately I did not have time to work on the reporting project Friday afternoon, but did a quick test this morning with some interesting results. I'm hoping if I describe what I'm doing, you can show me the error of my ways. This is really my first major undertaking with Crystal Reports.
If I simply load the report, then close and dispose, I don't hit the limit of 10 files. Note that I do not logon manually in my code as the logon parameters are all defined within the reports themselves. The logon happens when you actually view the report. Loading the report doesn't seem to actually log in to the DB.
What I did was create a very simple form with a single button that creates the WinForm class which contains the Crystal Viewer. It then loads the report, sets the ReportSource property on the CrystalReportsViewer object contained in the WInForm and shows the report. The report does show correctly, until the 10 reports limit is reached.
The relevant code is shown below. More than I wanted to post, but i want to be as complete and unambiguous as possible.
This code displays the same behavior as my earlier post (after 10 reports we are unable to create another connection to the DB).

Crystal Reports and Access database connection error

I had this in a different forum with no hits, so I am trying this one.
A person that I work with has multiple reports set up that pulls from an Access database that is password protected. When we moved everything over to a new computer, those reports now say that it cannot access the fields inside the database. It never pops up with a login screen either, like it does on the old computer. I played around with the ODBC, with no luck, couldn't get anything to work. I have also tryed relinking the database, but I keep getting connection problems. We are on a network, so her settings should have all moved with the new computer. Along with the database and the reports being on the server, so they were never moved. I am thinking it has something to do with a system file.
I also found this document on this site, but cannot find the download it mentions, sounds similar to my problem.

We are using Access 2007 and Crystal Reports 7. The database is not save as an Access 2007 database, but a regular mdb.

Hello Chris,
Crystal Reports does not store the database password with the RPT file. This is by design (Crystal is not a database security product). This is true of all versions of Crystal Reports.
If your users need to see fresh data when opening the reports then they will have to log in by providing at least the password.
You can send reports with Saved Data that won't try to hit the database, but the data won't refresh either. To save data with the report go to the File menu and click next to Save Data with Report. Refresh the report and then save it. The report will now have saved data and won't try to hit the database when opened. If the user hits the refresh button then they will get prompted to log into the database.

Cannot get SQLQueryString from crystal report if no database connection..

I am using craxdrt.dll to create a crystal report object.
I want to get the SQLQueryString used in crystalreport even if i dont have databse connection or even database on my local computer.
How can I do this?
Is there any other way to do this without connecting to database?
I just want to read its SQLQueryString Property.

The Clear answer is NO, as I said, only way to get the SQL is to connect to a DB of some type.
As a work around you can get the SQL if you have a dummy database to connect to. But you do need to know what type the report was designed off of or you take the chance of getting incorrect SQL. We can help you a bit here. Using the RDC you can get 2 DB types:
crSQLDatabase or crStandardDatabase, first one is if the report was designed off a SQL database like
MS SQL Server or Oracle etc and the second one is if it's based on a PC type like Access or Dbase. Although if it is PC based there may not be any SQL to get unless the PC DB supports SQL queries. If they don't then no SQL can be returned.
Is there a specific reason why you need to get the SQL?

Crystal Reports XI String [255] limit with the File System Data driver...

I was trying to create a Crystal Reports XI report to return security permissions of files and folders. I have been able to successfully connect and return data using the File System Data driver as the Data Source; however the String limit on the ACL NT Security Field is 255 characters. The full string of data to be returned can be much longer than the 255 limit and I cannot find how to manipulate that parameter.
I am currently on Crystals XI and Crystal XI R2 and have applied the latest service packs but still see the issue. My Crystal Reports Database DLL for File System data ( crdb_FileSystem.dll ) is at Product Version 11.5.10.1263.
Is it possible to change string limits when using the File System Data driver as the Data Source? If so, how can that be accomplished. If not, is there another method to retrieve information with the Windows File System Data being the Data Source? Meaning, could I reach my end game objective of reporting on the Windows ACL's with Crystal through another method?

This is a known issue. Early versions you could not create folder structures longer than 255 characters. With the updates to the various OS's this is now possible but CR did not allocate the same space required.
It's been tracked as an enhancement - ADAPT01174519 but set for a future release.
There are likely other ways of getting the info and then putting it into an Excel file format and using that as the data source.

Crystal Report throws Unexpected Database Connector error

We are using Crystal report 2008 CR4E API to implement the crystal report in our application. We use the below code to reset the report data source with our application data source. It works fine for most of the simple queries. But if the query contains any function defined in the SELECT Clause it throws Unexpected Database Connector error. As per the log and analysis we believe the root cause of the exception is it consider that function as column in the table and throws the SQL Exception that "function is Invalid Identifier". Could you please help in resolving this issue?

i'm also getting the same error when i'm trying to call stored procedure (that will fetch the result set and populate the report) through the query in the report-viewer.jsp. The result set is fetched i.e. when i print the result set it shows on tomcat but it is not getting passed to Table object to populate the report. However when i try to give the query explicitly in the form of SELECT statements, it works fine i.e. i can view the report in the browser. But giving query in the form of SELECT is a very naive way and is ok if u have too less reports not requiring too many joins, thats why i was using stored procedure. Any help would be appreciated.

Crystal Report Connectivity to Function module

Hi,
I have a crystal report which is connected to a Function module in ECC(dev). After the function module moved to Quality I could repoint the crystal database to Quality. Later, some changes were made in the function module fields (eg: change in field length etc) by the field names were kept same. now when i try to repoint the database it says field not found and the report canvas becomes blank. but I can see the fields in the field explorer.
is there a way to correct the error?

Hi Arka,
When you open the report then log into the DB and then click on Database, Verify Database. This should update the database info and changes in the report. CR keeps track of the DB it's connecting to so if you make s changes you must Verify the database to update the info in the RPT file also. Be sure to save the report.

Crystal Reports 2008 with Database / Universes (BOE 3.1 SP2) Questions

I have a few questions related to options that i can use when i connect to a database like sql server or oracle and i cannot use these options when i connect the report from a universe.
1) When building a Crystal report that connects to the database through a universe i cant change the option Optional Prompt from False to True this option is disabled. This does not happen when the report is constructed by connecting directly to the database, this functionality is useful when you have multiple parameters in one report.
2) For cases of reports with multiple parameters (where you can choose more of a list available), under the scenario of the bd direct connection is possible to configure the Crystal Available Values list shows dimensions that have at least some value in Fact Table, through the choice of parameter settings, where you can indicate where you take the value and description separately.Under the scenario universe connection these options are disabled because they are based on the query of the universe, there is an alternative perhaps from the universe to achieve this behavior in Crystal?

Crystal Report connecting Multple ECC systems

Hi,
I am working on crystal where I compare the data between to two diffrent databases(ECC tables). I am using SAP Table, function mudule option to create connection.
I have built a main report against ECC system A and imported a sub report built on ECC system B. Now I see that connection in my main report is overwrting the connection in the sub report. If I change the connection in the subreport with set data source location it changes the connection of both sub report and main report. After I deploy this report to infoview, in cmc I see only one database connection.
Is this a bug or can we have only one connection to ECC system per one crystal report even if it has sub reports?

Yes that happens automatically, I just checked the same logic with universes built against oracle data source, I could see two coonections in the CMC. Its like its there is this issue when I am connecting to sap tables directly

Crystal Reports Connection Types

I have a web server that houses a db2 database. For those users who are not on the network, I would like users to run reports from the "cloud" (the internet). Does anyone know how I can do that? What connection type I can use? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

my team has had a bit of experience doing this and it really depends on your setup.
1) how is your db2 database exposed to the internet when one is off of your network...is it in a DMZ or is it accessible via IP without having to use a gateway like citrix gateway?
if it is accessible via IP have a look at the Wire Protocol drivers made by data direct.

2) how will your users run the reports...as Don mentioned, you have to have a method to serve up the reports first off. or they would have to have a copy of the crystal reports 2008 designer like you do and have a copy of the applicable reports.
the other thing you can look at if you don't have a setup right now is On Demand to host the reports in the cloud

we have a bunch of machines in a dmz which include businessobjects enterprise to serve up the reports as well as all of the database servers themselves. the reports are accessed by the end users via opendocument hyperlinks and thus secured by infoview. in our case the database itself does not have any open ports to the internet, only infoview does.

Crystal Reports Web Elements - database write back question

Hi,
I have a question about Web Elements. In description of them on SAP site it says they can provide "write-backs to the database". This is something I would really like to see. I have a scenario:
User sees a long report and sometimes she needs to add a quick note that should be saved into the database. That note can be entered into WETextArea I suppose and WESubmit button click can be an event trigger for such a write back.
I would like to see example of such functionality on Crystal Report rpt file.
Please advise if anybody knows, I would highly appreciate your assistance.

hello,
webelements can be used for the interface to database writebacks...they don't do the writebacks themselves but create the interface to make it easier for an end user to add annotations etc...these values are then passed to a second report or a subreport. using the default prompting interface makes this quite difficult.
here's where the database writebacks are done...since version 9 of crystal reports there have been command objects. command objects have the ability to use any database syntax that is compliant with the database connection. i.e. if the syntax can go through the odbc layer then you can do this in a command in crystal reports.
commands will honour database securities so you don't have to worry about someone dropping a table if rights have been properly assigned. a word of caution there to ensure that database rights have been done properly as you don't want all end users to have the ability to write a report that can do database updates.
commands are also database specific so you would have to check your database online help to see what syntax would be appropriate.
the workflow would be to have 2 reports, one that had the webelements user interface and one that did the writeback. this user interface report would have the text object and submit button and using open document syntax, the values would be passed to the 2nd report that had the command object. the command object would have a prompt that would take the values from the open document url and then use the values in the write back.
for example,
1) the user interface report has one text object called "t1" and one submit button.
2) the target command object report has a prompt called "t1".
3) the target report command object has syntax like
INSERT INTO yourtestable
VALUES ('{?t1}')
SELECT 1
4) yourtesttable in this case has only one text field
5) the "SELECT 1" at the end of the command ensures that a dummy value is returned after running the update...to avoid a database error
6) this syntax would be for sql server
this is of course a very simplified example.

Collation conflict with Crystal Reports & a Primavera database

I'm new to Crystal Reports 2008 SP3; however, I'm ready to toss it out in relation to Primavera (version 7.0) data connectivity on my SQL Server - Windows 2008 R2 Standard (64-bit).
I have finally been able to establish a connection to the database (JDBC) - after struggling to get the right driver [sqljdbc.jar] on our SQL Server.
Now, I'm getting getting an error message relating to a COLLATION SETTING conflict:
'Failed to retrieve data from the database. Details: SQL Exception: [SQL State:] S0009 [Error Message:] Cannot resolve the collation conflict between "SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS" and "Latin1_General_CI_AI" in the INTERSECT operation. [Database Vendor Code: 468]'
- Primavera version 7.0 default collation is SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS
- I have searched the web for hints to resolving this error. Everything is pointing to the collation setting needing to be changed on the SQL Server.
__ Now, I'm checking on how to verify and change the collation setting on the SQL Server.
However, I'm suspecting that there is going to be another error around-the-corner.
It was my expectation & understanding that linking to various databases was a strong point for Crystal Reports. I have been working with another IT peer that is successfully using Crystal Reports for Remedy (HelpDesk application).
Has anyone experienced this situation? (any help is greatly appreciated)
Is there something (else) that is real obvious that I'm missing that would be ?

I'm using JDBC bacuse I couldn't figure out how to use ODBC. The JDBC driver that I'm trying to use is: sqljdbc.jar which I downloaded last week (MS SQL Service JDBC Driver 3.0 ... version 3.0.1301.101 ... date published 04/20/2010). This driver (sqljdbc.jar) was added to the Classpath in CRConfig.xml.
I did install Fix Pack 3.3, my laptop has Windows XP Professional 32-bit - I have JAVA version 6 Update 14 as the enable version on my computer.
I don't understand when you say "use the MS SQL Server Native 10 as your driver" - I cannot find that by itself on the MS Download site. I keep getting 'MS SQL Server 2008 Feature Pack August 2008' to be downloaded. I'm guessing that this driver should already be loaded; however, I need to know the specific name to add to the Classpath in CRConfig.xml.
__ I found an article [SQL Server Natice Client 10.0 ODBC Driver] that stated the ODBC driver is contained in the file sqlncli10.dll
-- I searched my local harddrive (C:) and it is not found
-- Would this be stored on SQL server itself?
-- I'm guessing that I need to download the 'MS SQL Server 2008 Feature Pack' onto my lapttop

I am trying to make a DB2 connection from the crystal report interface using JDBC(JNDI).Using com.ibm.db2.jcc.DB2Driver as the database class name.

Getting the below error.

Well let me rephrase my issue.
Usually when we connect to any other DBMS e.g Oracle/Sybase it downloads the schema into the crystal report interface, that makes life simpler while designing report.In my case schema is not getting download when am connection to DB2 z/OS. However I can connect to the DB2 server and can use any SELECT from Table queries from "Add Command" option.
