Crystal XI causing reports to take 20+ minutes to open

We use Crystal Reports with TIER (totally integrated electronic record).  Our computer system is part of a state network.  Our TIER programmer lives in another city.  He creates Crystal reports from his location and we create them here at our facility also.  Last week his local server (on the state network) was replaced.  The server in question is not used by us -- our database is located on another server and our reports are also located elsewhere.  Network staff said we should see no impact at all since we do not use that server.  When they took down his local server (they were switching from a novell server to a microsoft server) -- we suddenly developed a problem opening reports.  They would open, but only after 20 minutes or longer.  After much troubleshooting we were able to figure out that any reports the programmer did were the problem.  Any reports created here were opening fine.  Once opened, all reports ran fine and queried the database quickly as usual.  There is no question about how he creates reports versus how we do -- he taught us and has started reports here that do work.  We finally got the network guys to start up the old server in the other city.  As soon as they did, our reports worked correctly again.  We have gotten them to agree to leave that server up while we work this out.  It seems Crystal is automatically tying to the original user's originating server for some reason.  I can't find any place in Crystal to change this.  I opened several reports, re-saved them from here but it didn't change anything.  I also went in through Crystal and Set Datasource Location (updated each field in report), but it didn't help.  I think the reason that isn't working is because there isn't anything wrong with the connection to the database itself.  For whatever reason it is like Crystal is searching for that old server for 20 minutes, finally decides to move on and then the report opens (sorry, not a very technical description).  We use a ton of reports and right now my only option is to rebuild from scratch or ensure the old server is left up and running indefinitely. Does anyone have any idea how to break the apparent automatic connection to that old server?

You are making me think it might be a connection configuration or local machine space/frag issue. Both of these are easy to rule out - does your machine have an automatic maintenance policy (sweep for virus, defragment hard drives, and clean out junk files)?  Can your network techs do a trace test to see if there are bottlenecks in the connection?
I still think you will want to use the data-base expert and find out what the default table bindings are.  You would not need to rebuild the reports, just re-configure the tables and links.  As long as the tables have the same fields and field names on the different source tables you will be fine.
How big are the report templates? (multiple pages, intense graphic loads with charts or formatting, heavy calculations performed on the report level...).  Are they stored remotely or on the local workstation? Remote connections can take a while to get the report to the local machine if not properly configured (even if known to be connected and clear).
The slow too open reports are still indicative of bad links.  You don't have to rebuild the reports, just re point the default source tables.

  • FR Studio takes 5 minutes to open a report

    Hi all,
I am new in Oracle Forum, please let me know if i m posting in the wrong forum.
I have this problem when I try to open a report through VPN, it is taking over 5 minutes. Login takes about 10 seconds.
When i am within client's network, opening a report usually take 10 seconds.
I have a SR opened with Oracle, they recognized the problem, and they confirmed that this problem has been reported before by others and it has nothing to do with my VPN speed... However, they can only suggest me to a blog on performance tuning where I didn,t find anything useful. They also suggested me to upgrade to 11.1.2.2 which "might", "possibly", "miraculously" fixed the problem. I am not comfortable to re-setup everything for a fix that might not be there. So i am throwing this question out there to see if anyone else have fixed this before.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Rahul
    Thank you for your answer.
The user is Superuser, so it's not an Authorization issue.
I have tried to login the user on an other pc, and the issue is the same here.
If I login as another user (also Superuser) the issue is not there...
    Any idea?

  • Business Rules take 60 minutes to open in EAS

We are experiencing an issue with opening individual Business Rules in EAS. The rules associated with a particular application are taking on average 60 minutes to open. Performance for opening these rules had never been great (usually took a minute or two) but within the past few days, the time to open an individual rule has increased to 60 minutes. I have two Planning applications and the rules associated with the second Planning application typically open within 10 to 20 seconds, indicating that this is not a global issue, but somehow related to this one particular application.
Has anybody seen this before? Any thoughts as to what I might need to look at?
    Thanks,
    Bill

    Hi john:
If we create a new rule, it opens right away. If I remove the permissions and save it it opens quickly. When I add the permissions back to the rule, it opens as it used to (within a minute or two).
Does this tell me anything as to the root cause, or does this tell me that I need to go into each rule that is behaving like this and take these steps?
I don't want to export and elete right now because this is production and we are actively forecasting, plus if I go that route I will still have to open each rule and add permissions and locations and recreate all of my sequences.
    Thanks,
    Bill

  • Firefox 4.0 takes 5 minutes to open and another 5 minutes to close. Internet explorer takes a few seconds on same laptop. WHY???

To open and close Firefox 4.0 takes 5 minutes. Internet Explorer on the same system takes only a few seconds. Can you tell me why the major difference in time?

You probably have not seen anyone reporting the exact same problem as you. All three crash reports have the same crash signature and as currently ranked 67 it is not the commonest of reasons for a crash.
I hope you enter your email contact information when reporting crashes. I note you see this crash when using videos, others may possibly see this crash in other circumstances.
You have already tried the obvious, attempts at a fix so it is now down to wait and see, maybe developers working on the bug will report something or fix it.
Did you try my suggestion of installing portable ESR ?

  • CS2 Doc Converted to CS3 takes 2+ Minutes to Open Every Time

We are in the process of switching 34 users from ID CS2 to ID CS3 and are having file conversion nightmares. They need to re-use their old CS2 ad layouts but many users are complaining that the conversion to CS3 takes several minutes. In our test period we had noted that but once the doc was converted the subsequent file opening time in CS3 was greatly reduced. But it now appears that when some users are opening the converted and saved docs they are still experiencing the same file opening delays as when the docs were being converted from CS2. Then a different user will open the same doc and it will open immediately. We have tried to find a common setup or preference or plug-in issue that might be a problem, but so far have struck out. 6 users have brand new MacPros running Leopard 10.5.2 with all Adobe CS3 patches installed. This group uses identically configured everything and they still have inconsistent file opening behavior! Some open instantly and others take 2-5 minutes for the same file. We have noted similar inconsistency amongst our users who still have GS PowerMacs running Tiger 10.4.11. Their CS3 is patched and fully updated. Now I would expect there to be inconsistencies between the Tiger and Leopard G5 and Intel groups, but we see the same thing with the same file taking different amounts of time to open after having been converted and saved and then opened again with the same-configuration users, no matter what they are using.
We use a Xinet file and print server and all users are supposed to work on files off the server so the working file stays up to date, but for testing we have been having them download the same files to their desktops and opening them. One of my test Macs is an Intel Mac running Tiger 10.4.11 and Adobe CS3 all updated and I use the same 3rd party plug-ins as everyone else. We only use two sets of 3rd party plug-ins - the Xinet WebNative and FullPress plug-ins and Extensis Suitcase X1 client Auto-Activation plug-in getting fonts from a Suitcase server.
We don't have the problem if documents are created from scratch in CS3. Unfortunately, it will take a very long time to get to where we would never be using any of our old CS2-created files, so we need to figure out a workable solution. It is mainly a question of time, which is something you never have enough of before your press deadline and the users are balking at the amount of production time they are losing waiting for files to open. They have a tendency to force-quit InDesign before it can finish opening and then they have to deal with all the file recovery dialogues the next time. They are getting very frustrated.
Has anyone run into this behavior or come up with a solution? If so I'd love to hear from you!
    Thanks, Laura K.

    Hi Kevin,
I did some more trial and error testing since I posted my original message. This is what seems to be working:
You can leave the Suitcase Auto Activation plug-in there, but if you go into its preferences make sure the box for "Activate fonts in embedded objects" is not checked.
That made all the difference - so far. I need to try this on a couple more of my troubled Macs before I will declare victory!
In the Suitcase Client prefs you should also turn off Suitcase's auto activation and let the application plug-in handle that. I read that somewhere else a couple days ago, maybe it was the Extensis forums? Can't remember. But that's how I have mine set on my test Macs. (one MacPro running Tiger and a MacBook Pro running Leopard)
    Hope that helps!
    Laura K.

  • Why is FF 6.0.2 SO slow ? It takes 2 minutes to open any given web page

What details can I give ? It's taking ages to open the pages. Even if I am already on a page and click "home" just to refresh the page it takes a minute to load it. and 60 seconds is a long time.

Did it work fast in 6.0.1? or 5.0? Are you really sure that the problems you're describing started in this particular version.
Could you go to mozilla.org and download 7.0 and see if that solves it for you again? It's a much faster version.

  • IPhoto takes 30 minutes to open

Each time I open iPhoto 11 it takes around 30 minutes to open. I just see a blank window with the spinning icon.
I have my photos stored on an external drive. To test, I started a new library on a new external drive because the other one was about full. The new library, with only 100 pics on it still takes 30 minutes or so to open. I have turned off sharing and deleted email accounts in prefs as suggested on other threads and still the same thing. Any ideas?
    imac 10.6.6, 3ghz intel core 2 duo, 4g ram

See my post in this topic: iphoto running sluggish.   First try this: make a duplicate copy of the library and try the following:
1 - delete  the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file,, Cache.dbt, that is located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences..

  • Print & Fax control panel takes 1 MINUTE to open, delays app launching too

    Hi everyone,
This one is driving me nuts. The Print & Fax control panel takes around a minute to open even after deleting all printers. Application launching is delayed for a similar period (if the app accesses printer info on startup I presume). Has anyone experienced this before? Any tips or suggestions gratefully received...
    ~ Rodney

Just documenting this in case any one else out there arrives at this thread with the same issue....
Some progress. Deleting all printers, resetting the printing system and running disk repair didn't do the trick. However downloading Printer Therapy (http://www.fixamacsoftware.com/software/pt6/) has assisted. After restart there is still a 1 minute delay launching many applications (presumably while they try to connect to print system) but whereas this happened for every launch before, now it only happens for the first application launch. If I manually start the cupsd daemon this appears to take 1 min to start. After this everything is fine. My working theory is the issue is somehow related to cupsd. Does anyone know whether this process is normally started the first time an application connects to the printer (even though, in this case, I have no printers defined at all).
I have no idea why cupsd is taking so long to startup, I have reset the cupsd preferences (using printer therapy) and permissions, deleted all temp files etc. Any additional suggestions/recommendations would be appreciated.

  • Labview 6.1 takes 10 minutes to open 600 tags.

We have created a LabView 6.1 application to read tags in a Modbus OPC server.
If we monitor 100 tags, the start-up is instantaneous.
If we monitor 300 tags, it starts in a few seconds.
Monitoring 608 tags takes 10 minutes to start.
How can we get LabView to start faster?
    Server w/2 Xeon 1Ghz processors.
    1G RAM.
This is the only process running on the server, save the ancillary stuff.

If you chose to try LabVIEW Datalogging and Supervisory Control (DSC Module), I would use the National Instruments Modbus Driver. With LabVIEW DSC, the Modbus driver continiously polls the modbus items you are interested in at the rate you specify. These values are held in the DSC real-time database, and optionally stored in the DSC historian. DSC VIs allow you to read multiple tags at a time based on the group that you assign to the individual tags, or as specified by a tag list. I have attached a bitmap of the on-line help for the VI.

  • Files take 20 minutes to open on network

I have some files that take literally forever to open up on my home network. Is there anything I can do. It's beyond frustrating. thanks.

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound harsh. I realize that you are having difficulties with your network and I am just trying to understand what your current equipment is to provide help.
I'm not sure I'm on extreme even.
Please use the following Apple reference to determine the exact model of your Apple router: Identifying Airport hardware
Is this the only router in your network? That is, do you have it connected directly to a DSL or Cable modem for Internet access? Are your Macs the only computers on the network? Where are the modem & router located? ... co-located with the iMac in the office or in the living room where the MacBook is, or some where else? When attempting to access Excel (and other files) from the external drive attached to the iMac, does the MacBook have Excel running on it and you are just accessing the files from the remote drive ... or are you using screen sharing to access the iMac's desktop from the MacBook to run Excel?

  • Bug Report:  Loading Process Takes 5 Minutes when Opening A File

The last Vista 64-bit Windows auto update dated 28Oct09 installed iTunes v9.0.2.25 and Quicktime v7.6.4 ()1327.73). Quicktime seems to have a flaw.
When you open a .mov or mp3 file the little quarter inch "working" circle continues to spin for about 5 minutes, even though the audio or video file is playing. If you pause the playback, then drag the file to the trash or delete it, you get the blue screen of death as the computer shuts down. Closing the file then deleting it works properly.
Have any other Vista 64-bit users with Quicktime v7.6.4 ()1327.73) experienced these issues?

Finder crashes are often caused by "Google Drive." If it's installed, I suggest you first check for an update. If that doesn't solve the problem, remove it according to the developer's instructions. You may need to start the computer in safe mode to do so. Back up all data before making any changes.
If you use Google Drive and don't want to remove it, then try deselecting the option in its preferences to "show status icons." According to reports, that may be enough to stop the crashing.
Similar cloud-data clients such as "Dolly Drive," "iDrive," "Open Drive," "Transporter Desktop," and others can cause the same problem.
