CS4 Typography?
One of (several) complaints I've had with Flash over the
years has been the lack of any decent typography. Adobe pioneered
this area, I'd have thought that was one of the first things they'd
have done when acquiring Flash from MM. In all the marketing
literature from Adobe on CS4, I've yet to see anything about
support for all the open type features (like old style numbers) or
decent kerning and leading controls.
It occurred to me today that if Adobe didn't care about type
in Flash, maybe there is something wrong with my workflow. So I
thought I'd post here for ideas. Currently, if I want to do any
type with control on par with InDesign, Illustrator, even
Photoshop, I do my type in Illustrator, outline in, and then bring
it in to Flash. This is a huge pain when I'm creating something
that has a lot of small type boxes that might change often. Does
anyone have any other solutions I'm missing?
Fireworks has been using the same Text Engine as Illustrator since CS4.
It doesn't create styles the same way one would with MSWord or probably Indesign. It's a graphics app primarily. That said, you can create graphic styles which - when using the redefine styles tool - you can update any text in the same page that has the same style applied.
Fireworks now supports ASE files. They can be imported as a swatch set and you can also generate ASE files from Fireworks.
FW has had the ability to find and replace color values in text and vectors for many versions, but not from the Swatch panel. You cannot name individual swatches in the Swatches panel, but in the color fill panel you can see the hex value of a selected object and even copy the value to the clipboard.
I recommend you reading the article written by Bruce Bowman:

<p class="c3"><strong class="c2">Using Octenol to Attract Mosquitoes<br /></strong><br /></p>
<p class="c3">Octenol is an natural chemical that occurs naturally as a by-product of plants and some animals that eat a lot of vegetable produce. If carbon dioxide is mixed with octenol, it has been found to be an attractant to several mosquito species. There are other insects such as no-see-ums and biting midges that are also attracted to this scent. It has been proven to be a very effective product, especially for no-see-ums.<br />
<br />
<img src="images/12137165-cartoon-stop-mosquito.jpg" width="168" height="168" alt="mosquito" /><br />
<br />
Octenol is also a pesticide ingredient that is used to attract mosquitoes and biting flies. It does not kill the insects; it only attracts them. It can be used in combination with other products and devices that do kill them once they are successfully attracted to the device. It is important to be aware that non-pest insects are also attracted and destroyed by some of the devices.<br />
<br />
If octenol is ingested, there is a possibility for toxicity. It is not, however, harmful in the air to humans, pets, or the environment. It is vitally important that it is kept safely away from children to avoid the possibility of ingesting. Placement of the attractant and device utilized to catch biting insects should be carefully considered. It should be kept safely away from children and pets.<br /></p>
<p class="c3">To be most effective in mosquito control, the attractant should be placed between the breeding grounds of the mosquito and the area where the people are located. There are range limits that the attractant will reach and this needs to be considered in the placement of the trap as well.<br /></p>

CS4 crash with ntdll.dll
Newly installed and fully patched CS4. Nikon Camera Control Pro 2 installed with camera connected via USB. NikonCapture 4.0 installed. Epson V700 Pro scanner installed locally via USB. Sony DPP-EX7 printer installed locally via USB. Latest display drivers for ATI dual monitor videocard installed.
Windows XP SP2, fully patched.
More often than not, when a user attempts to print an image, CS4 crashes with no error displayed to the user. The following error sometimes appears in the event log:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Application Error
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1000
Date: 10/5/2009
Time: 4:47:06 PM
User: N/A
Computer: <computername>
Description:
Faulting application photoshop.exe, version 11.0.1.0, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.3520, fault address 0x00011948.
Another error:
Event Type: Information
Event Source: DrWatson
Event Category: None
Event ID: 4097
Date: 10/5/2009
Time: 4:47:39 PM
User: N/A
Computer: <computername>
Description:
The application, C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\Photoshop.exe, generated an application error The error occurred on 10/05/2009 @ 16:47:39.380 The exception generated was 80000007 at address 00000000 (ntdll!KiFastSystemCallRet)
Suspect the sony printer, however, the latest drivers are installed. A generic postscript printer has been installed as the default for the user which helps, but does not prevent the error from returning. This has been an ongoing problem with a couple machines at my organization. Multiple reloads of the operating system, CS4, printer drivers, manipulating user permissions, and the problem persists. I'm open to any ideas. The users must use that printer. It is a dye-sublimation printer that prints at the quality they require. It is the same driver that is in service on three other machines that work with the same printer model. One difference is that the three working machines have had a previous version of Photoshop installed (CS2 or CS3) while the two that are having issues started out with CS4. I have verified this by inspecting all DLL versions used in conjunction with this printer. Here is the latest error error detail from the crash given:

I have a problem where quite often the panels in CS4 show nothing -- they are blank. This includes, color, swatches, character, etc. (all of them). I did a search on this site and see where someone thinks it is tied to using Spaces. Is this true, and if so is there a way around it? I can sometimes get the panels to come back with info in them if I change the workspace from one to another -- for example going from Essentials to Typography and then back again.
I have been trying to organize my working environment and Spaces seemed like a good way to keep my graphics work from my email/web surfing clutter, but if CS4 can't handle this then I guess I will have to go back to my old way of working.
It happens in Illustrator as well (not really in Photoshop).
Thanks if anyone can shed some light on this.
Jeff
PS. Using CS4 under Snow Leopard on a MacPro (2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon) with 6GB RAMWhen we recently upgraded to CS3 from CS we also started seeing that behavior with the swatch panel. But tinkering with the panel (collapsing, minimizing, closing, reopening) at some point would solve the problem. I'm not sure exactly what the solution is, but it was a simple jiggering that solved it.
We also have seen for some people certain panels go completely blank in InCopy (such as the character panel) on some machines on their login but not on other machines with their logins. This was solved by deleting some files on their C drive (application data files for Adobe InCopy). Our environment certainly might be far different than yours, though, so I don't know that this would apply for you.

Optional vertical space marker in CS4?
Hi,
Just wondering if anyone knows if there exists, in IDCS4, some sort of way
of creating vertical space between paragraphs that will not appear if the
paragraph happens to begin at the top of the page.
Obviously, until now I've been using paragraph styles. But some kind of
vertical space marker would be so much simpler. You could have one for a
half-line height, or a full-line height and just insert them as necessary.
If not, any workarounds except for paragraph styles?
Thanks,
Ariel
Win XPSP3, IDCS4MEYes. Harbs idea is simpler than mine, because you don't have to fiddle with
textwrap settings.
So to summarize:
1. disable Skip by leading in preferences.
2. make sure the text frame you're working in has "First Baseline" set to
exact or leading.
2. create a line the length of the gap you wish.
3. cut and paste it at the beginning of the paragraph above which a gap
should appear.
4. Set it to an "above line" anchored object (or better, create an object
style to do this at a keystroke)
(If at some stage the leading changes, with CS4 you can do a search and
replace for the length of the line.)
I think that's pratical enough to be useable.
Here's a quote from "The Complete Manual of Typography" by James Felici,
published by Adobe Press:
"Dedicated typesetting systems typically had a command that let you add a
vertical space band of whatever width werever you wanted. Such a space band
was an independent entity, not tied to any paragraph. The software
recoginized it as a role-playing spacing element, and when that role wasn't
required-[as at the beginning of a page]-it would ignore the vrtical space
band. Unfortunately, this facility has yet to find its way into popular
desktop systems."
But at least there's a workaround....

PM 6.5 to Indesign CS to CS2 to CS4
Hello,
It was a nightmare going from PM 6.5 to Indesign CS in terms of line endings and general spacing so I let a third party do the conversions in her CS2 for these 200 plus page documents. I now want to buy CS4 so I can take back some document control from the third party. Will the conversion from CS2 to CS4 be as painfull as going from PM6.5 to CS/CS2 in terms of spacing? TIA for any feedback.Pagemaker and ID used completely different text engines. In particular, by default ID uses a paragraph composer that balances lines in an entire paragraph, rather than the single line composer in PM. It's not surprising that line endings would shift, particularly if you used PM tracking which is also significantly different from ID. Most people think the typography is ID is superior.
I'm not sure if you mean will line endings shift again between ID CS2 and CS4, or from Pagemaker to CS4. The answer to both is probably yes, but not as much from ID to ID version as from Pagemaker. There have been changes in the text engine with each new version which affect line balancing, particularly in justified text. You won't see these changes happen, though, until you start to edit a story and force a recomposition, or you force all stories to recompose in the new version by hitting Ctrl (Cmd) + Alt (Opt) + / (and why this doesn't seem to be shown on the default menus is a mystery) or by exporting to .inx or .idml and opening that.

Does CS5 Improve Typography and Color Swatches?
Hi, we are web developers creating mostly dynamic CMS based websites. We have been using Illustrator for designing our layout comps to send to the client for approval and drive the template design process. We only generate the actual graphics needed for the site from these files, we don't try to convert our comps into actual code (we just match the look with our templates using PHP & CSS).
But Illustrator has always been one of our most frustrating programs to use. It just has a tendency to be buggy (you have to nudge your slices down 1 pixel to export properly), or just plain counter-intuitive. And we have been using it for MANY years (we also do print and environmental graphics).
But when I've experimented with Fireworks to see if it would be a better solution (it SHOULD be), there were always a couple glaring features missing that would make it hard to use. The last one I tried was a demo of CS4.
TYPOGRAPHY
- Does Fireworks finally use the same type engine as Illustrator and Indesign?
- Does it support styles so you can apply certain type styling, say to headlines, and have them be globally editable?
It's such a drag to have to manually update the text formatting in 20 different places when you want to try a larger font size or something for your headings. We then use these styles as a basis for our main CSS styles.
COLOR
- Does Fireworks finally use the color swatches feature of Illustrator and InDesign?
- Can you create global swatches with (heaven forbid) some sort of name that makes sense (like the hex/rgb value) and have all objects with those colors be updatable by editing the swatch?
I can't understand how people could actually use those tiny little swatches with no indication of what actual color each was.
THANKS! If these two areas have been addressed, Fireworks might actually be a viable option for creating comps over Illustrator as it should be.Fireworks has been using the same Text Engine as Illustrator since CS4.

But when I will du this, I get the message "Error loading DLL".
When I will manually reference to the WIASupport.8LI File, I get the error: "Cannot reference this file"
Can you give a tip, how I can solve this problem?

Installed Premiere Pro CS4 but video display does not work?
I just got my copy of CS$. After installing Premiere I found two things that seem very wrong:
1) video display does not work, not even the little playback viewer next to improted film clips located on the project / sequence window. Audio works fine.
2) the UI is way too slow for my big beefy system.
My pc is a dual boot Vista-32 and XP system with 4GB of memory installed and nvidia geforce 280 graphics board with plenty of GPU power. The CS4 is installed on the Vista-32 partition. My windows XP partition on the same PC with Premiere CS2 works great and real fast.
Any ideas how to solve this CS4 install issue?
RonI would like to thank Dan, Hunt, and Haram:
The problem is now very clear to me. The problem only shows up with video footage imported into PP CS4 encoded with "MS Video 1" codec. So this seems to be a bug. The codec is very clearly called out and supported within various menues but video with this codec just will not play in any monitor or preview window. In addition the entire product looks horrible with respect to performance while PP CS4 trys its best to play the video. Audio will start playing after about 30 seconds. And once in awhile part of video shows up at the wrong magnification before blanking out again.
My suggestion to the Adobe team: fix the bug and add some sample footage to the next release so new installations can test their systems with known footage.

Change Locale / UI Text Options of Photoshop CS4
Sorry to bug you all but I've searched the answer to this for two days and can't find anything.
I recently installed CS4 Design Premium on a PC running Windows 7. When I resize an image (Image>Image Size), the dialog window always displays the Document Size in centimeters. Unfortunately I'm in the U.S. and haven't yet converted to the metric system and it's a royal pain to change the drop-down to inches each time.
In my "Locales" folder the only subdirectory that exists is, "en_GB". In Edit>Preferences>Interface:UI Text Options:UI Language there is only one option available which is "English: UK". I'm pretty sure that during the initial install of the suite I selected "United States" as my Locale. And is there any reason to have a drop-down with only one choice and no means of adding others (no need to answer this one, I'm just thinking out loud)?
Is there any way to add the United States as a Locale without having to re-install the Suite?
Many ThanksIs there any way to add the United States as a Locale without having to re-install the Suite?
The locale for the main program is defined by the serial, not necessarily by your language selection. Shared components derive their locale from this as well and/or in part from the system setting. That issue with installs wrongly using en_GB is quite common, though. It usually occurs when other Adobe software with shared components already was on the system and coerced the installer into using the wrong language. However, short of reinstalling everything Adobe after having sweeped clean with uninstalls and the CS4 Clean Script, there is no way to resolve this.

Complaint: Animated GIF, Photoshop CS4
I am a freelance print designer. Needless to say that I have upgraded to the Design Standard Edition of the Creative Suite 4. Still, some customers ask me to do their web banners, too.
Fact 1:
There is an animation palette in Photoshop CS4 Standard.
Fact 2:
You can create animations with that palette.
Fact 3:
You can save the animation as an animated GIF.
Fact 4:
Opening the animated GIF, you only get the first frame, so you cannot edit the animation or content inside the GIF.
Fact 5:
I need to alter a few animated GIFs which I created several years ago using Photoshop CS2. Due to a harddrive crash, I don't have access to the original layered PSD files any more.
Fact 5:
Photoshop CS4, the most advanced image editing tool on the face of the earth, is absolutely useless at this point, and I have to find freeware or shareware to do the job. Finding and purchasing this sort of software is MY time, and that is MY money.
Whatever drove Adobe to cripple Photoshop CS4 Standard, whatever drove them to expel the simple "Open Animated GIF" feature from Photoshop CS4, it was the wrong decision.
This, Adobe, is a customer complaint. Take it serious. There is competition, and I hear a lot about GIMP these days.
Frustrated,
GeroI know this thread is getting on a bit now, but I do have the answers.
Quite simply, as far as I can tell, this cannot be done without Quicktime installed.
To open an animated gif in CS4 on a PC:
1. Go to File->Import->Video Frames to Layers
2. In the File Name box type “*” ( or you can type the name manually) The window will now show every type of file
3. Select your gif and you are done
To open animated gif in CS4 on a MAC:
1. Go to open, select your GIF, then in the bottom left corner of the open file dialogue box select Quicktime Movie as the format, then open your GIF.
2. You’ll need to open your animations window by going to window -> animation. This will bring up the time line.
3. If you want to have all of the frames broken up into layers, click the options in the animation window, and select “Flatten Frames into Layers”.
This will give you access to all the frames as layers and you can now edit the GIF as though it was a movie.
I hope this helps to ease somebody's frustration. -
Who has a find Open Path plug-in for CS4 Illustrator on WinXP and a close path also?

I have to install Photoshop CS4 extended on a new computer from a disk because my old computer had a hard drive crash. There is no serial number on the back of the case. How can I obtain a usable serial number?
Find your serial number quickly
You can activate software without following up and registering it... at least that was the case in the past. The serial number is normally located on the disc case or a box inside the main box. If you did not purchase the disc from Adobe then it is possible you would have dealt with a redemption code, in which case it would have been up to you to keep a record of the serial number, especially if you did not follow up and register the software.
