CS5 Advanced Query - using a variable for a column name

Hi
I have been using Dreamweaver for a few years now, mostly version 8, but have just moved to CS5 (I teach it - among lots of other thing -  at what in the US would be a community college).
I have problem with a page in CS5 that worked fine in my old version 8 edition.
I am using PHP and MySQL as my server technologies
I have a CD database and have constructed a Search Page which has a Form with a Text Box (stext) for the search criteria, and 3 option buttons to select the DB column I want to search on.  The option buttons are called sfield - and have values band, title, and/or year these will be passed to my display page (display.php) via GET array URL Parameters.  They are passed fine.
I want to be able to enter "Pink" into the search text field, click the Band option button, and then my data displayed would inlude CDs by any band with Pink in their name i.e. Pink Floyd.  If I put 1989 and click the year option button, I search for all CDs from 1989 and so on.
On my display page I created a recordset and selected my MySQL Server, DB Table, and using the simple dialogue selected band as the Filter and "contains" and the URL Parameter stext.   This all works as expected. I put in a  dynamic table and when I run it to test it, it will search on band only and works fine.
Its when I try to select the column to search I get a problem.  I go to the advanced recordset dialogue.  I have the SQL
Select * from newellcds where band like %colname%
I need to change this to add a new variable, lookfield, which will hold my column selection from the option buttons (URL parameter: sfield), so I create the TEXT variable, with band as the default and the value of $_GET['sfield'] and put it into my SQL
Select * from newellcds where lookfield like %colname% - and it doesn't work!!!  I always get no return from the database.
After much experimentation, I echoed the Dreamweaver generated SQL on the screen and when I entered Pink and selected band on the search page, the Display SQL was displayed as:
Select * from newellcds where 'band' like '%Pink%'
Dreamweaver is putting single quotes round the value returned by my lookfield variable 'band' in this case.  If I enter the SQL without the quotes round Band into MySQL it works, with the quotes I get no returns.
After this very long description - does anyone have an idea how to get rid of the quotes round my lookfield variable???
How do I create a search page with two values passed - the actual criteria to search for, and the field to search for it in?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't have anything useful to contribute because I don't use DW to create queries, and you are not looking for help writing the query. You just want to get rid of the single quotes, which I can't help with.
But based on your description, shouldn't the query be
SELECT * FROM newellcds WHERE $sfield LIKE '%$stext%'
If not, then I am not following.

  • How to use simple types for table column names ?

    Hi,
    can any one tell how to to use simple types for table column names?
    It is required in internationalizing of webdynpro applications.
    Regards,
    Rajesh

    Hi,
    1: define required column names in <SimpleType>
    2:use the following code to get those values
    3:bind 'text' property of Column headers to context attributes
    4:take a context attribute 'Value' as type of <SimpleType>
    5:set these values to context attributes
    IWDAttributeInfo objAttrInfo=wdContext.getNodeInfo().getAttribute(IPrivate<ViewName>View.IContextElement.VALUE);
    ISimpleTypeModifiable simple=objAttrInfo.getModifiableSimpleType();
    Map m=simple.getEnumerationTexts();
    Collection c=m.values();
    Iterator it=c.iterator();

  • How to use string Variables for data provider names

    Really what I need to be able to do is insert the variable
    name in this:
    dataProvider="{chartXML2.lastResult.month.day}"
    I need to replace the "month" with a string variable name
    (i.e public var monthName = "January";)
    I also need to do the same for the categoryfield as it will
    not let me do categoryfield=$String.
    In PHP this is incredibly easy to do. You just say
    blah=$string . In fact, in PHP you can embed variable names
    everywhere. Its very powerful. For instance, in php, for the
    dataprovider issue above, i'd just do
    dataProvider="{chartXML2.lastResult.$StringName.day}"
    and it'd work just fine. Whats the syntax for doing this in
    Flex?

    You can use bracket notation. But don't. Use a reuslt handler
    to wrap the xmllist in an XMLListCollection instance variable and
    bind to that.

  • MySQL - In a Query, Using a Variable as a Table Name

    Hello,
    The code I have attached works. However, I would like to

    You can't. In the code you have given $result is a MySQL
    database result
    resource. You need to extract the actual value from the
    result resource
    in the same way as you have done by using
    mysql_fetch_array().

  • Using a variable for a query? Advice needed

    Hello everyone,
    I am new to JDBC and have a small problem with my application:
    I want the user to enter a word and depending on the word he enters, the program will run a query searching for that word.
    For example the user input is stored in a variable called "input", which is converted to a String.
    How can I modify the following command so that it actually uses the "value" as a variable?
    s.execute("select * from Users WHERE Name=input");
    Thank you very much for your help!

  • How do I...Mimic Replacement Path with Query using Customer Variable Exits?

    Hello SDN:
    We are on BW 3.5 SP16.
    We are currently using a replacement path Query(RP) with variables
    to populate a variable in another Query(T).
    The problem we are having is with performance.
    The entry of variables in replacement path Query(RP) is optional (This is necessary there cannot be required values)
    When results from Replacement Path Query are small performance is fine. (e.g. 10 seconds)
    When results from Replacement path query are large performance suffers. (e.g. 1+ minutes)
    Users are free to leave the replacement path variables empty resulting in a large set of data to be replaced. This is the worst performance case.
    We would like to discover a way to conditionally execute the replacement path query. That is if users do not enter values for the replacement Query(RP) variables do not execute the replacement path query(RP).
    Does anyone know if this is possible within reason and in customer exit space?
    We have reviewed the situation from all angles and the requirement for the replacement path FUNCTIONALITY and the freedom for the user to leave variable values blank remains.
    I've been searching and reading SDN and SAP notes for about a week and do not find threads which address this situation.
    We are also exploring Customer variable exits to mimic replacement path functionality
    (different topic subject="How do I...Mimic Replacement Path with Query using Customer Variable Exits?")

  • How to  use data function using characterstics variable for calculation on

    how to  use data function using characterstics variable for calculation on  attribute as key figure

    Hi Gayatri
    Did you not see my answer for CASE because CASE does indeed offer the use of the BETWEEN clause, but DECODE does not. Let me give you a little synopsis of DECODE.
    In its most simple form it takes 4 values and looks like this: DECODE(A, B, C, D)
    This essentially means, IF A = B THEN C ELSE D
    The trick to solving BETWEEN in a DECODE is to work out algoriths where A = B. Because we don't know how many values are between 00 and 99, although I could guess there were 100 we could of course have 100 parts in the DECODE but that would be awful. How about if we look at it another way and say this:
    IF PART_NUMBER < 'SDK00' THEN pay_amount
    ELSE IF PART_NUMBER > 'SDK99' THEN pay_AMOUNT
    ELSE pay_amount + 100
    This statement only had 2 hard coded values, but how to make DECODE work with less than? Easy, we use the LEAST function. The LEAST function takes 2 values and returns the one with the lowest value. So I use LEAST(PART_NUMBER, 'SDK00') then whenever the PART_NUMBER is lower than SDK00 it will be true. A similar situation exists for the opposite function GREATEST. Putting all of this together then, you can do this:
    DECODE(PART_NUMBER, GREATEST(PART_NUMBER, 'SDK00'), DECODE(PART_NUMBER, LEAST(PART_NUMBER, 'SDK99'), PAY_AMOUNT * 100, PAY_AMOUNT), PAY_AMOUNT)
    In English this can be read as follows:
    IF the PART_NUMBER is greater than or equal to SDK00 and the PART_NUMBER is less than or equal to SDK99 THEN PAY_AMOUNT x 100 ELSE 0
    Best wishes

  • Use a variable for the integer in Fmt offset modifier

    I'm trying to pluck values out of a long array of comma separated string
    values.
    I'm doing this within a loop and would like to use the loop interation to
    point to the starting point in the array.
    Here's what I have working so far:
    Fmt (scratch,"%s<%s[i0t44]",transmitBuf);
    Works great.
    Now if I go in and change i0 to i3 then my modifier doesn't start looking
    for a comma "," until after the 3rd character. Still working great. However....
    If I try to use an integer called "loop" instead of the literal offset
    value it blows up:
    Fmt (scratch,"%s<%s[iloopt44]",transmitBuf);
    Is there a way that I can use a variable for the integer portion of the
    offset modifer?
    Thanks All!

    Hi Roberto
    Thank you. I actually need to use a symbolic value for the interger section of the modifer vs. the specifier.
    So, in my example:
    Fmt (scratch,"%s<%s[i0t44]",transmitBuf);
    I want to make the following substitution (Assume z=0)
    Fmt (scratch,"%s<%s[izt44]",transmitBuf);
    Some background...
    I'm looking to loop index through a long CSV string array (transmitBuf) that looks like this:
    1,PEEP,7,6,,,21,20,
    So on my first loop when I use the following:
    Fmt (scratch,"%s<%s[i0t44]",transmitBuf);
    scratch = "1"
    ... Perfect. I now do a string length of scratch (which equals 1)
    and add 1 to it, I'm ready for my next loop which would
    literally read like this:
    Fmt (scratch,"%s<%s[i2t44]",transmitBuf);
    However, I want to put this inside a loop, so I would like to
    increment a variable (++z) and use the following:
    Fmt (scratch,"%s<%s[izt44]",transmitBuf); ---- Ka-Boom!
    So it's the use of the variable in the modifer that blows up
    the Fmt command.
    appreciate any thoughts...
    Thanks
    Mark

  • How can I use a variable for an interface log and error fle

    I want to use a variable for the interface's log and error file so that when I migrate from Dev to QA to Prod I don't have to do a lot of editing.
    Specifically on the "flow" tab for the "target", I want a variable to be the first part of the path for the log (\\sundev1\fnd1-hypd1) and join this with the rest (\update\log\logfile.log) within the LOG_FILE_NAME field.
    Thank you!

    Hi,
    It is quite simple....
    just use the <%=odiRef.getSchemaName("D")%> before the file name and configure both path in the topology linked to each context.

  • Using a parameter for a table name?

    In SQL Server, can you use a parameter for a table name?  I'm working with Visual C# and want to do something like this:
    SELECT MAX(ItemID) FROM @TableName;
    Can this be done?
    (Basically, I have three separate methods within a class--one for each table I have; and each one will perform the above query but on different table names.  I'd like to see if there is a way that I can have just one method that will allow me to specify
    the table name.)

    As pointed out in other posts, you can. But a more relevant question is whether you should.
    A table in a relational database is supposed to model a unique entity, and each column in the table is supposed to model a unique attribute. This is not always how it is, but it is from this model a relational database is designed.
    From this angle, having a dynamic table name does not really make sense for application code. (Administrative actions is a different story.) Think of it this way: have you ever wanted to make the class name dynamic in C#?
    Admittedly, it is different in .NET, because everything inherits from System.Object, but in a relational database there is no inheritence.
    Anyway, if you are using stored procedures, you should have one stored procedure per table. Physically, in the plan cache, there will be one query plan per table, no matter how you do it.
    If you are submitting SQL statements from your application, it is a different matter. In this case, I find it difficult to object if you have a class that performs generic actions against tables. Then you build the SQL string in the client code.
    However, no matter how you do it, you need to be careful to avoid SQL injection. We had the example:
    DECLARE @TableName nvarchar(50),@sqlCommand nvarchar(max)
      SET @TableName = ' ItemInformation'
      SET @sqlCommand = 'SELECT MAX(ItemID) FROM ' + @TableName
    EXEC (@sqlCommand)
    But what if we have:
      SET @TableName = ' sys.objects; SHUTDOWN WITH NOWAIT; --'
    As long as we do it in T-SQL, we can (and we should do!) this to prevent SQL injection:
      SET @sqlCommand = 'SELECT MAX(ItemID) FROM ' + quotename(@TableName)
    If you build your SQL strings in C#, you will need to employ other checks. There is only an issue if the user can inject data somewhere, but your generic class will not have knowledge of this, and must assume the worst.

  • Using number datatype for date column

    Hi
    Is there a side effect for using "number" datatype for "date" column?
    If so, what is the disadvantage?
    Many thanks

    Hi,
    Ora_83 wrote:
    Hi
    Is there a side effect for using "number" datatype for "date" column?
    If so, what is the disadvantage?Yes, there's a definite disadvantage.
    Oracle provides date arithmetic and a number of functions for manipulating DATEs. None of them work with numbers.
    For example,
    SELECT    TRUNC (order_date, 'MONTH')     AS order_month
    ,       AVG (ship_date - order_date)     AS avg_delay
    FROM       orders
    GROUP BY  TRUNC (order_date, 'MONTH')
    ;order_month involves a DATE function; it's pretty easy to find the month that conatins order_date.
    avg_delay involves date arithmetic. It's extrememly easy to find how much the time passed between order_date and ship_date.
    Depending on how you code dates as numbers, doing either one of the above may be just as easy, but doing the other will be very difficult. You'll waste a lot of effort converting the NUMBERs to real DATEs whenever you need to manipulate them.
    Validation can be very difficult for NUMBERs, also.
    Watch this forum. It's a rare day when there's not some question about how to get around a problem caused by storing dates in a NUMBER (or VARCHAR2) column. Don't add to that. Always use DATE columns for dates.

  • Using values returned from SQL for Report column names

    I am building reports against our TFS development db.
    One of the reports tracks days spent (Dwell Time) in various status categories (eg: New, Assigned, In Development, Hold, etc) for a given "ticket".
    For a fixed list of values from {Work Item].System_State, I can send the results (days in Assigned) to the column named (Assigned) for each status for each event in the [Work Item History], and then sum them for each ticket as:
    Ticket ID      New          Assigned       InDev       etc
    1230001        2                  0                 0          ...
    1230001        0                  1                 2          ....
    SUM            2                    1                2         ....
    However, I have many different Projects, each of which use their own Status names.
    I don't want to duplicate the same basic report, if I can avoid it.
    How can I name and generate this data for the unique Status list for each Project?
    Simplest analog is:  name = First(Fields!Status.Value, "TFSdb")
    and allows value for a column name (category) as: =IIF(Fields!Status.Value = First(Fields!Status.Value, "TFSdb"), Fields!Days.Value, 0)
    However this fails beause:
    1. It only delivers the FIRST status value, and,
    2. I cannot SUM an expression which is itself an aggregate (using First).

    RRapport,
    Is this still an issue?

  • Need to use Select List value as column name

    I want to have a WHERE ? IS BETWEEN ? AND ? clause.
    I am using the PL/SQL Query returning a SQL Query as a report. This uses bind variables for items I had set on my form..... If I hardcode something like:
    'WHERE STARTDATE IS BETWEEN '||
    'TO_DATE(:P1_START,''dd-MON-YYYY HH24:MI'') AND '||
    'TO_DATE(:P2_END,''dd-MON-YYYY HH24:MI'')';
    I have no problem, but I have 2 date columns, STARTDATE and ENDDATE, and would like to use the value in a select list and not have to hardcode "STARTDATE" in there. I have not been able to do this, does anyone know how to use a bind variable as a column name? From reading some posts I think it might not be possible.

    Heather,
    You're on the right track, just glue in the column name so that it becomes part of the returned query string from the function (...'WHERE '||:COLNAME||' IS BETWEEN '|| ...).
    Note that the bind variable is not part of the returned query string, but the column name obtained from the bind variable when the function executes does become part of the query string.

  • Alias name for the column name in Prompt

    Hi,
    I have a scenario where I am taking column names into prompt. I have used the following SQL in the SQL results under "Show" option of the Prompt.
    SELECT CASE WHEN 1=0 THEN AGE.AGE ELSE '"Orders"."By OrderDate"' END FROM " Real Time"
    UNION ALL
    SELECT CASE WHEN 1=0 THEN AGE.AGE ELSE '"Orders"."By ShipDate"' END FROM "Real Time"
    My problem here is I am getting the column names into the Prompt as "Orders"."By OrderDate" and "Orders"."By ShipDate", which is not acceptable and readable for mat for the user. Is there any way that I can assign an alias name for the column name such as OrderDate and ShipDate in the above SQL.
    Your quick respose is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Rama

    hi,
    try an alternative one....in your administrator make new columns with alias to ones you want...so you wiil be able to show whatever you want.
    Otherwise,is it possible to show
    SELECT CASE WHEN 1=0 THEN AGE.AGE ELSE '"Orders"."By OrderDate"' as "xxxxxxxxxxxxx"END FROM " Real Time"
    UNION ALL
    SELECT CASE WHEN 1=0 THEN AGE.AGE ELSE '"Orders"."By ShipDate"' as "yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy"END FROM "Real Time"
    Ending,you want the data from your columns?or just the name??
    hope i helped...
