  • InDesign CS5 PDF - Failure to Export Vector Elements

Recently, we have had two separate incidents where the creation of an InDesign CS5 PDF failed to export certain vector art elements. The elements are not shared between jobs and the files were physically created in different locations (entirely different servers) within our organization. The elements are pdf and eps and appropriately linked. On the PDF, we're not even getting a low-res version of the artwork. When looking at the PDF in NEO, the containing box of the graphic is not present. One the most frustrating aspects of this is we haven't been able to repeat error in order to fix the error. The next time (or 50 times) the document is exported, the vector art is fine.
Has anyone else had a similar issue?

    @rickphot
I've had this same problem just today. I have a 64 page INDD that when exported to PDF (print) from CS5 (with no elements on my page set to "non printing elements"), only some of my vector shapes get exported. They are all merely 0.25pt Black Lines used to direct a reader from a comment to a matching illustration, and some pages exported them just fine, and some other pages will not work. I've tried moving them to a new layer, cutting and pasting in place, copying and pasting in place, changing the transparency modes, etc...nothing works...EXCEPT to just redraw the lines.
    @Bob Levine
Do you work for Adobe? Can you offer any advice to this problem yet?
Thanks all. Glad I'm not the ONLY one going crazy with a bizzare problem like this one.

  • PS CS5 PDF Large Format Printing Problem

I had to create a file for a sign (9 feet by 20 feet - 100 dpi) in PS CS5. Problem is I now need to send it to the sign printer. I need to make a PDF from the file but the save as makes the file size bigger than the PSD even with changing the compression settings. The other problem is I cannot print to PDF as when I try that the Acrobat X save as dialogue box never appears. The screen just goes back to the artwork. I have deleted the preferences, reinstalled Acrobat, etc. What can I do here?

To maintain vector output capability from Photoshop in PDF you can't output PDF by way of printing and using Acrobat Distiller. From the File Menu you choose Save As and then select Photoshop PDF from the list of file formats. It will retain vector data from embedded fonts and vector shape layers. I just tested it using Photoshop CS 5.5 64-bit and then viewing the results in Acrobat X.
That being said, Photoshop is a crude tool for passing along vector-based artwork. I don't like the vector shape layers feature very much at all because I find it very user un-friendly. I very much prefer to use Adobe Illustrator in conjunction with Photoshop. It's so much easier to control. I often paste AICB formatted paths into Photoshop's paths palette via the clipboard and then use the vectors as sources to create fills and other things. I'll manually create clipping paths on photos in Photoshop and save TIFF images with the clipping paths active to knock out the background when placing the TIFF in an InDesign or Illustrator layout. I'll create other vector objects in Photoshop to later export in .AI format to Illustrator. Ultimately the end result winds up in Illustrator as a single page layout or in InDesign as a multi-page layout. Both Illustrator and InDesign are far more capable than Photoshop at combining vector-based art and raster-based art together. When you save a PDF from InDesign or Illustrator there is no doubt your raster content and vector content will remain intact. Like the solution with Photoshop, in InDesign and Illustrator you simply choose to save the file in PDF format. No need for using the print to PPD and Acrobat Distiller post process step. Distiller comes in very handy for creating PDFs from lots of non-Adobe applications.

  • InDesign CS5 PDF export status

It seems that now with CS5 we no longer receive a pdf export status bar. Export is running in background. When exporting large files, the only way I know it's still working or exporting is the error message when I try and close document... Saying task running in BKG.
In Cs3 and 4 there was a status bar that displayed progress. Is this a preference that can be turned on or off?
Annoying when exporting large files with many pages...
    Any help?
    Thanks

OK, well, here we go. I hope people find it useful -- if so, I'l make an announcement thread so people are more inclined to see it.
You can also download it from here.  See How to Install InDesign Scripts for installation instructions. If you save it in the
Startup Scripts folder, it will run automatically when InDesign is started. Running it a second time disables it.
// exportPop.jsx -- pops up Background Tasks when you start an export

  • Photoshop cs4 pdf and cs5 pdf

Can I do a slect all from the import viewer in CS4? If so how can I do it
Also are there any new features (like slect all pages and open) in the Import pdf viewer for CS5.
    TIA

Try this:  Click on the first page, then scroll to the bottom, hold the shift key down, and click on the last page.  Voila, all pages selected.
Seems to look about the same in CS5, by the way:

  • Illustrator CS5 PDF Dimensions Incorrect - 72dpi for web

Issue in a nutshell: I'm wire-framing sites in Illy CS5 for it's snap to pixel grid features. I have my document set up to use pixels as units, raster effects at 72dpi, and RGB color. So as far as I can tell everything should be formatted correctly. The issues arise when I save the comps to PDF so I can e-mail them to clients. Two things happen, from what I can tell so far, that are most likely related. First, the PDF artboard size doesn't match the Illy artboard size. Comparing 100% zoom size side by side on each, the PDF appears to be 33% too large (i.e. they look identical when the PDF is at 75% zoom and Illy at 100%.) Second, what I thought was a separate problem originally, when placing PSD's at 72dpi they look crisp in Illy and Photoshop but appear blurry when saved as PDF (I'm assuming because of the 33% scale distorting them.) When saving the PDF I've tried using "Smallest File Size", "High Quality Print", and some custom settings (downsampling images to 72dpi) just to see if I can get anything to work. Everything comes out oversized though. Also, I know there are options to export as .png, .jpg, ect... and that you can "Save for Web and Devices." I want to avoid using these if possible because they tend to be slow, don't favor multiple artboards, generally handle text poorly, and are not as good as a PDF for emailing to clients for review.
In the reading I've done searching for a solution it looks like most people have their artboard or PDF preferences set up incorrectly. Usually resulting in a drastically larger or smaller image, roughly 4 times, because the file is being saved at 300dpi instead of 72dpi. What throws me for a loop is the 33% scale because I'm not seeing a direct relationship between print quality dpi and web dpi mussing things up. There must be some setting or box I'm not checking to save the file correctly, but am not sure where to go about it.
Thanks for all your help, and let me know if you need any more info.

    Arnbly,
Forget monitor resolution. It has nothing to do with monitor resolution. Discussion of monitor resolution just confuses the issue.
    Comparing 100% zoom size...
    That's the key.
You are using two different applications. (Never mind that they are published by the same software vendor.)
Regardless of your monitor's specs, it's neither the monitor's dot pitch (102 PPI) nor its pixel count (1920 x 1080) that makes Illustrator's display of 1" smaller than Acrobat's on that same monitor. It's how many monitor pixels (on any size monitor) that the two programs use to render a representation of a real-world inch at 100% zoom.
Illustrator always assumes 100% of one inch of actual linear measure in the document corresponds to 72 monitor pixels. In other words, at 100% zoom, it uses 72 pixels to "paint" an inch. When set to Inches, the major tickmarks of Illustrator's rulers are 72 monitor pixels apart, therefore display smaller (take up less of your monitor's space) than the rulers do in Acrobat.
Reader (and Acrobat), by default, assumes 100% of one inch of actual linear measure in the document corresponds to 96 monitor pixels. In other words, at 100% zoom, it uses 96 pixels to "paint" an inch. When set to inches, the major tickmarks of Acrobat's rulers are, by default, 96 monitor pixels apart, therefore display larger (take up more of your monitor's space) than the rulers do in Illustrator.
In a nutshell, it boils down to this: Zoom is just the currently-displayed ratio between real-world measure and number of monitor pixels used to paint a picture of it. Illustrator and Acrobat (by default) simply label different zoom levels to be "100%". Illustrator clings to the MacOS convention of using 72 monitor pixels to paint an inch-worth's of page content. Acrobat's default uses the Windows convention of using 96 monitor pixels to paint an inch-worth's of page content.
Neither one necessarily matches physical reality. That is, even without switching between programs, if you hold a ruler up to any given monitor displaying a given application, what the software labels "1 inch" at "100%" will quite likely not match your physical ruler. Obviously, for example, if you view your PDF on a cell phone and zoom to "100", the display will measure in real-world physcial measure much smaller than the same PDF does on your laptop, which will likely in turn be smaller than when displayed on your desktop--even if all three devices have Acrobat zoomed to "100%."
As you can see above, Illustrator's "72 pixels to paint an inch" uses less of your monitor's space to display an inch at 100% zoom, but shows less detail because it has fewer pixels (72 x 72) available for rendering that square inch . Acrobat's default "96 pixels to paint an inch" takes up more of your monitor's space to display an inch at 100% zoom, but shows more detail because it has more pixels (96 x 96) available for rendering the same square inch.
The above screenshots, however, are of vector-based artwork. If the artwork were a raster image, display quality , not just size, would also differ between the two programs when zoomed to 100%. The display would be sharpest when the actual number of pixels contained in the scaled-to-one-inch image matches the number of monitor pixels that the program displaying it uses to render an inch. So if the above artwork were a 96 x 96 pixel raster image scaled to 1 inch on the page, its display would be better at 100% in Acrobat than in Illustrator. If its were a 72 x 72 pixel raster image scaled to 1 inch on the page, its display would be better at 100% in Illustrator than in Acrobat.
So to make your PDFs display at the same size as your Illustrator documents at 100%, set your Reader (and/or Acrobat) display preferences to what Illustrator considers an inch:
But understand: Pixels Per Inch means nothing to a web browser. Web browers ignore PPI. They just display image pixels to monitor pixels, 1:1. So if your client is on Windows (by far more likely than not), Acrobat's default setting of 96 PPI is going to be more representative of the size he sees your web-destined design when viewed in his web browser.

  • Photoshop CS5 pdf size fine - Bridge Multi page pdf size not fine

I know it must be asked a thousand times but here goes:
PDFs saved by photoshop display the true document size (let's say 70cm width on 72ppi)
When I try to create multi page pdfs fro bridge (thanks Adobe!), no matter how many ways I try to set it up, the image always is small in the center of a white background. Always.
    What gives?

    Hi,
    1. Why dont u try it in pdf itself?
U can just crop the required area in pdf file using crop tool so it can be applied for all the pages at a time.
    2. If u trying to remove particular area on a pdf u can place a white box on that area using pitstop tool it can be saved as actionlist like batch processing and applied for any number of pages and files.
Making this in pdf itself won't get u more file size. Size will be as equal as ur source file.

  • CS5 PDF export (high res) is causing lines and color shifts where transparent images overlap

Has anyone else had this issue? I've attached two samples of what is happening. Basically, I have a headline with an image that overlaps it a bit. The frame cuts through the headline (you can see it in the sample) and causes the type to break. I've also had it shift my color significantly so that the green that is under the frame is much darker than the green outside the frame. Everything is in the same color space using the same profiles.
Originally, I thought it was a PDF anomolly, but it prints just as you see it. Can someone please explain what is happening here?
Thanks in advance for any input.

That makes sense. I had a colorist that works with one of our vendor pre
-press houses set us up. We calibrated to our vendors machines so that we could share files when necessary. Their recommendation was the distiller workflow. Even setting the profile in the export to pdf option in ID caused it to be a bit different than doing it the long way. That may have changed since this was a couple of years ago, but I've just continued to do it that way.

  • Missing layers in CS5 pdf export :((

    Hello,
trying to export a document with 20 pages with 2 page  templates ("Mustervorlage") and 2 layers as PDF (interactive and not  interactive).
In some pages the objects of the  background layer are missing. Exporting only one of these pages the  background objects are exported, too.
But why? In InDesign CS4 (both windows) I did not have this frustrating behaviour.

  • InDesign CS5 - PDF Book Flow

I am in the process of creating an InDesign book that is meant to be viewed as web-only. They are facing pages as the design requires the pages to be viewed side by side. There is a problem, though, with the chapters that have an uneven amount of pages. The page will not flow down to the next chapter, making for a very awkward-looking PDF.
For example, the PDF looks something like this, wherein [][] is a spread and [ ] is one page.
I would like to be able to click through the PDF and have it look more like this:
Where all of the spreads are visible rather than having the few scraggling single-page screens.
Is there a way to get the pages all to flow together once I export it to PDF? Will I have to manually go through each page in order to make sure they are spreads?
So far I have modified my documents so that all pages start on page 2, eliminating the single 'cover' page, but the end of the chapter is causing me trouble still.

Spreads are built in the PDF during export, so if there are an uneven number of pages in the file you will get one single page, or if you have an even number and start the chapter on a right page you will get two single page spreads. Acrobat will not combine pages.
You have two choices, combine your chapters into a single file before exporting, or export as single pages and let acrobat display them side-by-side. You can control the initial display settings in Acrobat Pro so the book will always appear as two pages when opened, but you can't prevent a user form changing the display option after opening if you use the second method.
You should think very carefully about your design and your viewers. Not all readers have young eyes or wide-screen displays. I personally find pages set as two-columns to be very difficult to work with on screen as a consumer, let alone having to look at a full two-page spread.

  • Bridge CS5 pdf slideshow problem

My problem is that when I create a pdf slideshow, it loops even though I do not check the box next to "loop after last page". I have tried multiple times with no success. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Tom

No, the "repeat slideshow" is not checked. Excuse my ignorance, but wouldn't that setting apply to viewing the slideshow in Bridge? My question relates to the saved pdf file, executed outside of Bridge.
The Output option for loop slideshow is for opening in third party viewers. It is also a bit of a mystery for me but in basic the theory should be when saving loop and playback options opening this file in a viewer application that should start with asking to accept the settings for this document (it does so in Acrobat Pro but not in my basic preview app on a Mac.
Ironically Bridge itself does not respond to the loop preset when having its own view slideshow active (but to be honest, this does not surprise me at all, one of the many flaws of Bridge when it comes to consistency )
And settings in the viewer on its turn should override the settings in the file (unless as described above in Acrobat with asking for permission). But as often, this is the theory and with all different applications and systems it is hard to find a general protocol for use.
If you have checked if both the file and the viewer don't have the loop after last page setting saved and you did not save it in a template in the Output module (but then it should be selected I would think) and it keeps repeating to loop then maybe reset the preferences for Bridge.
