CS5 Pixel Aspect Ratio Problems...

Hello All,
I am working on porting over an existing .mov file importer from Windows to Mac while also upgrading it from CS4 to CS5 (and also rolling in the creation of a hand-written 64-Bit QuickTime file handling library to boot, ouch).
In my current test bed I am having problems with certain 1920 x 1080 .mov files. Some 1920x1080 files that I have get imported properly, some files that I have get imported with the wrong aspect ratio. I have verified that both files should be displayed using square pixels and have also verified that when the selector is sent that calls SDKGetInfo8( ) that I am setting the following for **all** of the above-mentioned test files:
SDKFileInfo8->vidInfo.pixelAspectNum = 1
SDKFileInfo8->vidInfo.pixelAspectDen = 1
I have stepped line-by-line through SDKGetInfo8( ) and the stretched and non stretched clips seem to yield exact same traces through this function. However, the files that are being imported with the wrong aspect ratio, of course, preview in a stretched format. Also, in the informational area of the Source Bin, when the *stretched* clips are selected the information that is provided for these clips is:
NameOfTheStretchedClip.mov
Video, 1920 x 1080 (1.7778)
00:00:9:13, 23.976 fps
etc…
For the clips that aren't stretched, the (1.7778) is (1.0). I am not the biggest expert on the actual usage of Premiere, so I can only assume given the values displayed and the respective visual result of the clips when previewed that this value displayed in the UI is the pixel aspect ratio and not the frame ratio as the clip with (1.7778) is stretched and the clip with (1.0) is not, yet both are 1920x1080 clips. What to me is suspect is that 1920/1080.0 is 1.7778 and so somewhere for the clips that are being stretched the pixelAspect ratio values seem to be getting derived using the pixel dimensions and not the values vidInfo.pixelAspectNum and vidInfo.pixelAspectDen that are explicitly set to '1' as shown above.
Thus my question is, aside from setting in SDKGetInfo8() the following values:
SDKFileInfo8->vidInfo.pixelAspectNum = 1
SDKFileInfo8->vidInfo.pixelAspectDen = 1
Where else are the pixelAspect values supposed to get set?
Alternatively:
- During which other selector calls *CAN* pixel aspect ratio get set? As I mentioned, I am porting existing code, so perhaps these values are getting set elsewhere that I am presently unable to find.
- Is there some setting that might get set at the import of a file that says to derive the pixel aspect ratio from the pixel dimensions that might be getting triggered for the clips that are being imported as being stretched?

Hi Zac,
I am taking a look at this issue further with the aid of an additional engineer here that has more experience with QuickTime files. 
First off, upon viewing the XMP metadata of the stretched file in the Metadata Viewer available inside Premiere, the Video Pixel Format is, in fact, listed in the XMP metadata as 1.78. 
However, the time signature on the stretched .mov file, as listed in information of the QuickTime atoms, was 23976 / 1000. On a whim we used Dumpster to change the time signature to 24000 / 1001 to see what would happen. After altering the time signature in the Atoms of the file in this fashion, in Premiere the aspect ratio is now shown to be (1.0) in the source information in the Source Bin and the video is imported in the proper unstretched format (or - better stated - played back via our PlayMod in the proper unstretched format). However when viewing the metadata in the Metadata Browser in Premiere, the "Video Pixel Aspect Ratio" is still showing 1.78. This seems to confuse the issue further as now this time signature alteration in the Atoms of the QT file has fixed something and is now seemingly overriding the order of operations you mentioned as the XMP metadata still seems to list an improper format, yet everything else is seemingly behaving fine. 
BTW - Clips with other time signatures don't seem to have this problem. 
Any ideas?

  • H.264 pixel aspect ratio problem after update

    Yesterday I updated Premiere Pro CC and Media Encoder CC to version 2014.2. But now I am having pixel aspect ratio problems with the H.264 codec when I export a 1080i50 sequence to PAL widescreen. The problem also seems to occur with other frames sizes.
    I am using the same settings as usual with Aspect set to: D1/DV PAL Widescreen 16:9.(1.4587). However, VLC and Windows Media Player play the video with a 5:4 ratio. So it looks like the pixel aspect ratio information is not passed to Media Encoder or to the file.
    This problem does not affect other codecs like AVI or MPEG-2, these are correctly displayed.
    Is there anyone else having this problem? And more important, does anyone know a solution?

    When creating files for computer/online playback (not editing), then best practice is to simply use square pixels with 1.0 Pixel Aspect Ratio, which will ensure that ALL players correctly display your video, no chance of problems.
    Export as 1024x576 with 1.0 PAR and that is the square-pixel equivalent of PAL DV widescreen.
    For NTSC users, I've seen it two ways, either 864x480 or 854x480.

  • Pixel/Aspect Ratio Problem

    I'm midway through a huge project utilizing about a hundred stills in NTSC SD. I needed as much screen real-estate as possible for this so I used the D4/D16 Anamorphic pixel aspect ratio in Project Properties. My problem is that because I don't have a Kona or Decklink card, I don't have any preset codecs for this aspect ratio when I take it into FCP 5.1. The result is a squished widescreen frame when I output it from Motion to FCP. Not sure how to resolve this. Do I give it a custom frame size in FCP or what? Also, because this is all photos and graphics made within Motion, what's my best option in terms of quality for export from Motion to FCP? I'm assuming 8-bit or 10-bit uncompressed, but that's just a guess. Or is there a codec within Motion that I can export it as and it will come out in the correct aspect ratio in FCP?

    Then I'm thinking you want to use an anamorphic widescreen format in FCP that you can then set up in DVDSP and presumably project or display on a widescreen TV...

  • Exporting 1080i, Pixel Aspect Ratio Problems

    Hello everyone,
    I've been dealing with a lot of different format projects recently: SD, HDV 720-24P, and HDV 108050i.
    For now, these projects are intended for internet delivery. I've not had too much problem exporting the SD and HDV 720-24P projects, but the HDV 108050i has been very frustrating.
    When I export SD and HDV 720 in compressor, I set the pixel aspect ratios to NTSC and square, respectively. But when I try to set the pixel aspect ratio for the 1080i to "1080i 16:9" (which I believe is 1.333:1), it rejects my choice, choosing "default" instead. When compressor finishes exporting, my 1080i movie looks very squished horizontally.
    The only success I have had is in exporting via Quicktime conversion, where I duplicate my compressor settings, but do nothing to the pixel aspect ratio (since there is no option to change it in quicktime, it seems). The movies I have exported with Quicktime have been fine. I don't know if it makes a difference, but when I try to export these 1080i clips, I am in the proper 1080i "easy setup."
    I know almost nothing about this pixel aspect ratio business, but I believe it is the cause of my problems (since I am using the proper 16:9 aspect ratio for movie width x height).
    My Questions:
    1. If I am understanding the problem correctly, how do I get compressor to acknowledge the right pixel aspect ratio for my 1080i footage, rather than the incorrect "default"?
    2. If am not understanding the problem correctly, what might be going on?
    3. Can anyone point me to a useful resource about pixel aspect ratios? I've been searching the forums and online, and I thought I was getting a grip on things but it seems I am still way over my head. For example, what is the significance in Final Cut Pro of changing your viewer or canvas to not show square pixels? Do you need to format for square vs. non-square depending on the final delivery destination (not the source format)?

  • Experts Only:  Difficult Pixel Aspect Ratio Problem

    I am having trouble with the PAR (and Screen Aspect Ratio) from one particular camera that belongs to the client. It's a Sony SR-100 SD camera that records some form of MPEG-2 directly to a HDD. Normally I don't have trouble sussing out aspect ratios, but this one has me stumped. My guess is that QT and/or FCP are not handling it correctly.
    The native footage is read as muxed MPEG-2 @ 640x480 with square pixels in QT Player (Movie Properties) and FCP (Item Properties). This doesn't fit the SD frame. More later. A handy tool called MediaInfo Mac tells me the same clip is Primary Stream MPEG-2--not muxed--with AC3 audio at 720x480. MediaInfo Mac doesn't compute the PAR, but it does say the display aspect ratio is 4x3, so I am assuming some distortion is taking place. My client claims the specs from the camera documentation match the MediaInfo Mac data--not the QT data--and I believe him.
    None of this matters, of course, if the footage plays fine in FCP. It is too small--it displays 112.5% scale up at -12.5% PAR. Odd for 720x480 native video, but that's not what QT and FCP are reading. I ran the same clip through Squared 5's Streamclip to convert to DV (as suggested by this site: http://www.aulich-adamski.de/en/perm/how-to-edit-mpeg-2-in-final-cut-pro). This is where it gets really weird. The resulting clip, when imported to FCP, is read as 810 x 480 with square pixels. 810x480. That is not a typo. On the other hand QT Player reads (and plays) the DV converted clip at 720x480 from 640x480 (DV PAR), and MediaInfo Mac reads the same. See? Weird.
    The bottom line is I can use the footage scaled and squished. I don't think the client will mind, if he notices. We aren't using much of his material. The issue is I thought I understood this. Either I don't, which is fine and maybe you can 'splain it to me. Or I do and QT and/or FCP are not reading this material correctly. Any thoughts?

  • CS5 and aspect ratio problem

    I am running Master Collection CS5. I have AVCHD clips from from two cameras. One camera is .mod and the other is 720p H.264 (MOV). The .mov show up 16x9 but the .mod show up as 720x480 (4.3). Window Media Player plays them in the correct wide screen format but the properties in Premiere are 720x480. I guess the answer is that adobe doesnt support .mod files but maybe I am missing something.

    What you're missing for sure is the fact that this forum is for suite related questions. My assumption is that you need help with Premiere Pro. Please post in that forum.

  • Problem with pixel aspect ratio

    I searched but found no answer.
    I have several Maya renders which are at a resolution of 720x486 and a pixel aspect ratio of 1.2. I composited my image sequences in after effects interpreting that 1.2 pixel aspect ratio. I then exported a quicktime movie using no compression at 24fps at a resolution of 720x480 NTSC 16:9.
    When I import this video into Encore 2.0 It comes out as full screen. Not only is it full screen, but when I preview the dvd, the video is blurry with scan lines and black bars on the left and right side. The menu however, is widescreen (I used a template as a test)and perfectly clear. I tried to select the asset and go to file>interpret footage, but this option is grayed out. I have also tried exporting an avi from after effects and importing that into Encore. It still will not let me set the pixel aspect ratio. I have read that After Effects does not embed the pixel aspect into exported videos. I have also read that I should export mpeg2 videos for use in Encore, however I do not see this option in After effects or Premiere Pro.
    What am I doing wrong? Any help is appreciated. If I left any information out that could be useful, please let me know.

    Thanks for the response. I don't really care if I preserve the 4:3 aspect ratio. Or does my GL1 not use square pixels and I just never noticed it? It's strange I've never seen this problem until FCE HD.
    I have tried exporting a number of ways from FCE, including Export > QuickTime Movie... and Using QuickTime Conversion... For the latter, I typically set it to export as 720x480. I always export as video. The final export contains video clips as well as still images within the video.
    I am a bit embarrassed having to ask this question. I've been working with still images in photoshop for over a decade and worked a lot with video during that time as well.

  • Stretch Pixel Aspect Ratio with AME CS5?

    I was given some videos that were in the wrong pixel aspect ratio. The videos are 4:3 and they were supposed to be 16:9.
    Can I stretch the videos in AME? I tried to adjust the resolution, but when I hit the Output tab to preview the video, it gave me the same 4:3 video withblack bars on the sides.
    (I also have Premiere Pro CS5, and if this could be done in Premiere, then I'm willing to do that. But I can't seem to be able to create a 16:9 sequence that is 320 X 180.)

    In Premiere, you can right click on your footage in the Project Bin.  From the context menu, choose Modify then Interpret Footage.  In that dialog box, you can tell it to conform the pixel aspect ratio to 16:9.

  • How do you export a Pixel Aspect Ratio Corrected Image? (CS5)

    I have a still pulled from Premiere Pro CS5, but it's in DVCPRO HD Pixel Aspect (960x720) I pulled it up in photoshop, which corrects it for preview purposes, but I want to export the corrected (1280x720) Image... The only way I've found so far is to create a new document with the corrected Aspect and drag the image to it, then export it... BUT I have a bunch of images to pull from these videos, is there a simpler way?

    There are two "Aspect Ratios" with many Video Images.
    First, one has the Aspect Ratio of the Image - what you listedwith the 960 x 720. That is the width (in pixels) and the height (in pixels).
    Then, there is the Pixel Aspect Ratio. Many Video Images do not use Square Pixels (PAR = 1.0), but instead a Pixel Aspect Ratio. This will be something like PAR = 1.212 (SD Widescreen), PAR = 0.9 (SD Standard), etc..
    With a non-Square PAR, PS will display the Image with Square Pixels, as the computer uses Square Pixels.It will then warn you, that the display is in Square Pixels.
    What is the PAR, that you wish to use? This can be altered via Image>Pixel Aspect Ratio, and PS will honor that, if you Save_As PSD, TGA, and several other formats, that support non-Square Pixels. What format do you need?

  • Has anyone else encountered a problem with poster frames not recognising a video's pixel aspect ratio

    I'm discovering a strange effect with some of the .mp4 videos I've upload into iBooks Author. They're Pal SD 4:3 .movs with a 16:9 pixel aspect ratio and they play out fine on the iPad. However the iBooks software seems to be ignoring the pixel aspect ratio of the poster frame. This leads to the situation.
    1) When I drag my video into iBooks author all looks good - the video is 16:9 and if I choose to set a poster frame (or leave it at default) it looks 16:9 in the iBooks Author.
    2) I preview my book and it opens in iBooks on the iPad. But now the poster frame aspect ratio is 4:3
    3) I click on the video to start playing and it immediately jumps to 16:9 aspect ratio and plays out fine.
    4) If it scroll down a couple of pages and then scroll back the video poster frame has now reset itself to 4:3
    This sounds like a bug to me. Anyone else had it? Do you know if it's possible to report bugs without having a Developer licence?

  • Menu pixel aspect ratio in CS5

    How do I take an existing menu from the Encore library, and change it from .9 pixel aspect ratio to 1.2? I would guess that I should use Photoshop for this, but is there a better way from within Encore?

    What do you mean by "scaled" everything?
    By scaled, I mean taking the text and menu buttons and squeezing them a bit. Only one background element's width needed to be changed.

    Yeah, I can imagine everyone thinking to themselves "This question can NOT be as simple as it sounds..." Thing is, the only reason I've ever gone into the basic tab for a menu is to uncheck auto-routing. I never needed anything else until now. But once I found it, I explained it for future readers.
    (which is what Jim advised you not to do in post 1).
    He wrote that he wouldn't do it, then told me why he wouldn't do it. The aspect ratio buttons weren't mentioned, nor was PS. So that may be what he meant, but I wouldn't know that because the options were not presented. Gotta break it down stupid simple for the noobs like me, man!
    How satisfactory all this is depends on the particular menu and what parts you are keeping versus replacing.
    So for converting a 4:3 menu to 16:9, what would the difference be between:
    Option 1- (what you recommended)
    1. selecting a blank wide menu
    2. select "Edit in PS"
    3. select 4:3 menu
    4. select "Edit in PS"
    5. dragging all wanted elements from 4:3 menu over to blank wide menu
    6. resizing/editing as you see fit
    and Option 2-
    1. select a 4:3 menu
    2. select the 16:9 option in the Properties panel
    3. select "Edit in PS"
    4. select all elements to be resized in Layers panel
    5.Transform width to 75%
    6. additional resizing/editing
    Isn't this basically two ways to do the same thing? Would these options not work with some menu elements?

  • Pixel Aspect Ratio Issues-FCP HELPP!!!

    Okay folks, so currently I am putting together my reel in FCP, however I am encountering a few issues. So my source formats are different in pixel aspect ratio, some was shot on the 7D, some on the Alexa, and some on super 16mm, and a few after effects animations. However all of it is HD, and in ProresHQ 422. My problem here is when I import all of my media into FCP if the timeline is set to square pixels, the HD(1440x1080) footage looks squished, and if I set the timeline to HD(1440x1080) the square pixel footage looks blocky, pixelated and super square.
    That said, some of the footage from the 7D is labelled as square and some is labelled as HD(1440x1080), and all the after effects stuff is square.
    Right now i am dealing with it and just leaving my timeline as green-preview render, so everything looks mostly normal. However whichever format is not that of the timeline, the footage is degraded a tiny bit, so that when I pause the footage it looks great, but in preview it is slightly blurry.
    My question is, is there a way to format everything as either square or HD(1440x1080), so it looks normal, or is there a way to use mixed media formats and not have the preview blur. I'm going crazy over here, as I just graduated and am in dire need of a reel so I can begin to apply for jobs, etc....Or is there a way to formate my prores setting to transform everything to square pixels?

    You can use compressor to convert everything to square pixels, however there's no need to worry about how it looks in fcp when it's playing but not fully rendered.  Try exporting a short section (mark an in and out around the section - and going file:  export: quicktime Not quicktime conversion) with current settings.  If you render the material, it should look fine when you play it within fcp.  Unfortunately, the render settings in the sequence menu are not particularly intuitive, but do a little playing around with them if you've got the time.
    I prefer to convert all my sources to my intended pixel dimensions, frame rate and codec before I edit in fcp, but it may not be necessary in your case.

  • Pixel Aspect Ratio bug in Media Encoder export

    Having a weird bug in media encoder exports that I can't seem to figure out. I have a 1080p sequence with a mix of 1080p footage and PAL DV assets. The PAL assets have a pixel aspect ratio of 1.0940. When I format them in my Premiere sequence, I am able to scale them correctly and they look fine. When I export them directly from premiere to broadcast standards it's also fine.
    However, when I try to export these sequences in Media Encoder via File->Export->Media-> Queue using the same exact settings (I'm using a preset), Media Encoder formats the PAL assets as if they have square pixels. Thus, half of the footage in my sequences gets horizontally "squished." Note that this does not happen for footage that natively has square pixels, such as my 1080p camera footage.
    Has anyone encountered this bug? It seems strange to me that Media Encoder would treat items in a sequence differently that Premiere during export, I was under the impression they were using the same rendering engine... It's really a problem as I'm going to have to crank out multiple versions of this 48-minute film and not being able to queue those exports is going to be a huge headache.
    Using latest version of CC 2014.1 (8.1.0).

  • Aspect ratio problem with consumer camera and Premiere Elements 11

    Hello everyone - I'm Steve. I'm new here. I do still photography on a pro level, digital and analog, but I am an absolute dummy with video...but then, I don't want to do much, just rudimentarily cut a few family videos, upload them, etc.
    However, I can't get Premiere Elements 11 to output my self-shot clips in a correct aspect ratio.
    My camera is a consumer-model Canon Legria FS200. I shoot video in a resolution the camera calls XP. The camera says they are 16:9, the camera monitor shows them as 16:9, and when I use the software (called Pixela Image Mixer) that came with the camera to import the clips to disk, I get mpg files that Windows (7) Explorer says are 720x576 pixel, and that VLC player correctly displays as wide-screen 16:9 without me having to tweak its display settings.
    However, the moment I import them into Premiere Elements, they appear horizontally squeezed, and I can't seem to output them any other way, with or even without editing them in Premiere. 
    I tried to use the recipe given here: https://forums.adobe.com/message/5987538#5987538 , (replacing only NTSC with PAL because I'm in Germany),  namely, setting the project preset set manually for PAL/Hard Disk etc/ Widescreen 48kHz and check force selected program settings. But no matter, Premiere displays the video in horizontally compressed form, with large black bars to the right and to the left.
    On the export side, setting the output to PAL DVD Widescreen and setting the Pixel Aspect Ratio in the output settings to Widescreen does not help, either. Neither can I force VLC player manually to display the correct aspect ratio. BTW, audio is perfect all along.
    This is about as far as I can see myself getting without help. Has anyone any idea?

    I see that you are now in the Adobe Premiere Elements Forum with your problem already solved.
    I did not see any Why for what you encountered, so I thought I would give you my take on this.
    Your Canon FS200 gives video with MPEG2 video compression with a .mod file extension. That .mod file extension can be found in use with some Canon as well as JVC cameras. The .mod file history with Premiere Elements (any version) is problematic. In some instances, the user needs to rename the file extension from .mod to .mpg before it can be imported, but not always. But, the .mod widescreen comes packaged with the aspect ratio dilemma, presenting as 4:3 rather than 16:9. The classical argument is whether Premiere Elements does not recognize a .mod file's 16:9 flag or whether the 16:9 flag got lost.
    There used to be a utility contributed by an user to handle the file extension and/or aspect ratio issues. Now, the general fix is to import the file into Premiere Elements (in your case 11) with Add Media/Files and Folder/Project Assets. And in Project Assets, you right click the file, select Interpret Footage, and go to the Pixel Aspect Ratio section of the Interpret Footage dialog where you
    (a) dot the Conform To:
    and
    (a) set the Contorm To: field to (in your case) D1/DV PAL Widescreen 16:9 (1.4587)
    Once you are in the program and have the file on the Timeline, if any black edges, you can click the monitor to bring up the image's bounding box. Then drag on a bounding box handle to scale the image just to the point where the black edges are gone.

  • Aspect ratio problems

    I've built a DVD with 16:9 DV movies and menus made in Photoshop using first of all the PAL DV 16:9 preset and latterly a custom size in the ratio of 16:9.
    My problem is that when I check the DVD using the simulator the menus fill the screen OK but the 16:9 DV media looks more lke 4:3. I noticed that while making menus in Photoshop using the DV16:9 preset that 'pixel aspect ratio correction' switched itself on and wonder if this is part of the problem. I've tried re-saving my menu pages with the correction unchecked but still have a problem. Is pixel aspect ratio correction just for display or does it affect what's saved. I won't get the chance to check a burned DVD until very close to my deadline so I don't know whether I have a real problem or not.
    I suppose what I'm asking is what settings do I use in Photoshop to produce menus for a 16:9 project.

    Thanks for your input, that clarifies things although I'm not sure I described the problem properly. I think that my Photoshop menus ARE being displayed properly and the problem is actually with my 16:9 DV movies or DVD SP itself. Here's what's happening ...
    A 16:9 DV movie set as a menu background looks more like 4:3. The same 16:9 asset used as a button on that menu appears 16:9 (hurrah) but the same 16:9 asset used as the target of the button show up in the simulator as more or less 4:3!
    I should have mentioned before that the problem only appears in the simulator and using the (sofware) DVD Player. Movies and menus all look 16:9 played on hardwrae players. What's going on.

  • ALV classic and toolbar

    Hi, i'm not familiar with ALV classic (i'm always working with ALV OO), but is it possible to add extra buttons to the ALV toolbar, and handle the click on these buttons ? regards, Hans
