CS6 InDesign not opening existing CS3 files

I installed CS6 Cloud, now my existing CS3 indesign files will not open.

Open how and on what system? Mac? Windows? Do you use File / Open or do you double click on a document icon? Always use File / Open from the menu of the application first. Are you on Windows and does the document has the correct .indd extension?
In short: we need more info from you.

  • Unable to start Photoshop CS6 - could not open a scratch file because the file is locked (Windows)

When I first installed Adobe Photoshop CS6 I was unable to run Photoshop or Bridge CS6.  Photoshop would give me an error about "could not open a scratch file because the file is locked.  If I ran either of these programs as an administrator they would run without issue, this led me to believe that there was a permission issue somewhere.  After some digging I found out the both Bridge and Photoshop try to create a temp file (similiar to Photoshop Temp2777223910092) on the c:\ drive of the computer.  In my case the user that I was logged in with did not have access to write to the root of the C:\ drive.  Note that you run the program as the administrator and change the scratch disk location as that changes the preference for the administrator user and not the user that you are currently logged in as.
To get around this issue I first had to give the user that I was logged on with write permissions to the root of the C:\ drive.  Next try and run Photoshop, you will get an error another error about the scratch disk and about and invalid or missing setting file.  To correct this you need to have run Photoshop as an administrator, next you can go to Users\Admin\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS6\Adobe Photoshop CS6 Settings and copy Adobe Photoshop CS6 Prefs and/or Adobe Photoshop X64 CS6 Prefs to Users\<your logged in username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS6\Adobe Photoshop CS6 Settings.
Photoshop and bridge should now start up with no issues.
I hope that this can help others out there as this caused me a great deal of frustration when upgrading to CS6.

OK, here comes the explanation of what the scratch disk does and why it's optimal to have it on a physically separate internal drive (not partition!) other than your boot drive
I probably shouldn't say anything since it could complicate this thread, but the rules of thumb can be different under special circumstances when SSD is involved.
IF you have a LOT of empty space on your SSD-based system drive, then Photoshop can actually work great with it's scratch setting pointed at the system drive.  This is because a) SSD transfers are much faster than spinning hard drives and b) there's no seek time, so simultaneous transfers to/from scratch and swap files aren't devastating to performance, and you can see a net gain because of the increased I/O throughput over what's possible using a separate spinning drive for scratch.
But if you don't have a huge amount of free space (hundreds of GB) on the system SSD, it's definitely better to use a separate drive, as station_two has said.
Also, up to about a year or so ago, you had to try to severely limit write activity to your SSD drive, since you could actually wear them out by repeated high data write activity.  That's pretty much a non-issue now with the advent of things like the SandForce in-drive controller that does wear-leveling inside the drive.  Modern drives will last 10 years or more in normal typical use, without special consideration.
As it turns out, making a RAID array of SSDs is a great way to boost performance across the board, have bunches of free space, and ensure even the heaviest usage doesn't shorten the drive life.  I have done so, creating a 2 TB system drive C: made from 4 SSDs and Photoshop's swap file (and pretty much everything else) pointed to C:.  This system flies, and I can barely tell when Photoshop and/or Windows "goes virtual" and starts using its scratch/swap files heavily.  I don't even notice Photoshop auto-saves.
    Sorry for the SSD diversion.
    Back on topic:
Pretty much everyone who's successfully using a computer - Mac and PC users alike - comes to realize after a while that the task of integrating things on their computers and making everything work falls on THEM, not the developers of applications like Adobe.  Some applications pose unique challenges, but to think you can just throw up your hands and try to make it someone else's problem when something goes wrong simply isn't a viable strategy.  Maybe that's how things should be, but it's not how it is.
For those of you struggling to get Photoshop to run properly, bear in mind that it's on you to get things working.  It works for most folks.  It could be a configuration or setup choice you've made that may need revisiting, or some kind of restorative activity that you need to do, or even something very minor like clearing your Photoshop preferences, but it may well take your learning new things and doing things you didn't think you'd have to do to get back to where you can edit photos.  It's no one's problem but your own.
So let us here on the forum help you - when we say to do something, try it.  We're not here to jerk you around; we're users just like you who have already found the ways to make things work, and we'd like to help you do the same.

  • Photoshop CS6 will not open any graphics files

Photoshop cs6 will not open graphic files, i have reset the settings. I get to see all the files in preview but when I try to open a file nothing happens, no error messages, no file opens, nothing.
When I use bridge I try to open the file with open in photoshop cs6 but again nothing happens. I found that if I reboot my PC photoshop will work correctly until I shut photoshop down but if I reopen it later before rebooting my pc now graphics files will open.

  • Photoshop CS6 does not open or create files

I am using Adobe Cloud. And have downloaded Photoshop CS6. Using it locally.
It was working fine.  For weeks. The application still loads without error. But if I open a file nothing happens. No error message. But no file appears. And if I try to create a new file the same thing. No error message. But no new canvas to work with. In both cases nothing appears in the layers panel.
The Help menu gives me the option of deactivating. So I am assuming it is not an activation issue.
Fireworks works fine. Illustrator works fine. Only Photoshop has this problem.
    I am running Windows 8. 64bit. 12gb. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 2gb. Adobe Photoshop Version: 13.0 (13.0 20120315.r.428 2012/03/15:21:00:00) x64. No optional 3rd party plugins.

    Update 03/2/2013
I had enough I uninstalled Creative Cloud and secure wiped the Intel 520 SSD and the wiped the RevoDrive 3 X2. Installed windows 8 clean install and re-downloaded and installed all the Creative Cloud Apps.
    1. After the install was completed clicking on Photoshop CS6* causes nothing to happen. No tasks open, nothing in task manager showing photoshop opening. It's like the request just goes away.
    2. Figured maybe I need the updates, opened bridge clicked on help - updates.
    3. All products had updates and updated them all.
    4. All updates successful except for Photoshop and DynamicLinkmanager.
    Photoshop Update Failed
    Adobe Photoshop 13.0.1.1
    Installation failed. Error Code: U44M2P7
So then I search the forums and find the option to manually download the CS6 update from Adobe.com. I did that and still nothing.
So in Windows 7 I could open Photoshop once per reboot and work. Now in Windows 8 I can't even get it to open.
There has to be an incompatibility with either:
    1. Nvidia GTX680 4GB cards
    2. Nvidia WHQL Latest Drivers
I draw that conclusion because PS CS6 has worked just fine until Nvidia Updates were installed. I know in 3D Mark III the card only reports as a 2GB and they claim it's purely cosmetic reporting. It also works fine on my Quadro 5000 card in another box.

Unable to open using program Compatibility Troubleshooter Mode: Windows 7

  • Photoshop CS6 could not open a scratch file because the file is locked

hello, I've been having problems with the error above.
my setup has 128gb ssd (C) which contains only my OS files with some junction points to Program Files/Program Files(x86)/ProgramData/Users which are located in my D drive which is a 1TB WD.
at first it showed when I tried to start PS for the first time after a clean install on a new computer I managed to get past it by runing PS as admin and changing the scratch disk to D.
but now I noticed that when I try to copy a path from illustrator into photoshop as either a smart object or as pixels I get this error again. I haven't seen it again other then that but I just started using PS in this setup so I am yet to explore all the functions and whether they are working correctly or not.
when ran as an administrator the illustrator->PS transfer works fine but I don't want to run PS as admin all the time...
anyone found a solution for this?
I already tried playing with the permissions but it didn't help.
    thank you

ok I managed to fix this! I had to run a disk repair it took a long time but after a reboot it now works fine.
    hard drive -> properties -> tools -> error-checking -> check now...

  • CS6 could not open a scratch file because the file is locked

I am able to run CS6 when I login Admin, so i change scratch file location to D:\. After restarting PC, login by Admin, I can run CS6. But I still can't run CS6 when I login by other account, I think the location of scratch file is per user setting. Any way to set this for all user?

Yes, it's per user because it's part of the prefs. If the scratch file can't be created, then you need to set your drive permissions properly. Refer to this:

  • Photoshop CS6 will not open files

Right after rebooting my computer (Windows 7 Pro) I can open one photo file in CS6 using any normal method of opening a file in Photoshop. After closing that file I cannot open any more files using any method such as>Open Recent, File>Open, or right click open using Photoshop, by selecting the file, double-clicking to open it etc. I also cannot open a file in photoshop CS6 from Lightroom 5 using Photo>Edit In> Photoshop CS6. Everything works in Lightroom when I use Photo>Edit>open in CS6 Photoshop opens but the file doesn't.
If I reboot my computer I can then open one file using any of those methods, but when I try to open an additional file it will not open. I have run through all the opening Photoshop without plugins suggestions and all the other suggestions about what may cause this problem which I have found on Photoshop Help and Support Center and nothing has worked.
This started while Lightroom 4.4 and CS6 were on my machine and had been working well for months. Then, suddenly, I couldn't open anything in Photoshop. I know of no changes made to the computer. After trying various suggested solutions I reinstalled Photoshop CS6 and things seemed to be working so I went ahead with updating to Lightroom 5. The same problem popped up in CS6 again. Lightroom 5 and Lightroom 4.4 have both worked with no problems and still do. Photoshop seems to be the problem. I've also run an antivirus which found nothing.
    Any suggestions?

Others have this same problem. See discussion at Re: Photoshop CS6 does not open or create files
I finally got CS6 to work but have no idea what I did that caused it to start working properly again.

  • Recently updated Mac OS 10.5.8 to 10.6.8 and and can not open exisiting Illustrator5 files or save new files.

I recently updated my MacBook Pro OS from 10.5.8 to 10.6.8 and can not open existing Illustrator5 files or save new files can someone help?

I think you have a corrupted upgrade. Do you have a backup of your old system?
Here's what you should do for now:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

Indesgn CS6 has not opened since my Windows 7 PC has been re-formatted a few weeks ago. I have installed all recent updates and it won't open from either short-cuts or through explorer. Any suggestions?

  • Photoshop CS6 suddenly does not open a tif-file

... which I just created in the same Photoshop CS6 half an hour ago. The error message when opening says: "Der Vorgang konnte nicht ausgeführt werden, weil diese Datei nicht mit dieser Version von Photoshop kompatibel ist." (could not open because this file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop). The tif-file has more than 10 layers and is about 150 MB big. There was absolutely no error while saving the file in the first place. I already tried opening in 64 and in 32 bit version.
How can this be and how can I get back or repair my file?
Thank you very much in advance!!!

Try opening it in another program like CorelDraw or a simple image viewer like IrfanView.

  • InDesign CS5 (Mac OS 10.6) can not open its own file

I need guidance to open an artwork file that in one hour I have to send to the print shop. InDesign refuses to open its own file.
    Any clue? Adobe, please help.

Re: InDesign CS5 (Mac OS 10.6) can not open its own file
    Bob and Peter
Thank your for helping us out. It was really necessary to ask a coworker to open the file and export it in InDesign markup language.
Three hours later than expected, but it's done!
We are stuck here. I'm a Master Collection user of CS5, using only Dreamweaver, Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Bridge and Acrobat Pro. (I don't know why I bought the Master's). My coleague former Window user, got a Mac in May and downloaded the trial version of Design Studio Standard Collection of CS5.5. Before expiring, we purchased its license and filled it in the active trial version.
A couple of months ago we noticed that were missed Plug Ins on his version and contacted Adobe who instructed us to download the whole files again. We never did because it is a pain to get rid of the missing parts of a pre installed trial version etc.
I will ask Adobe to send a CD disk for his version.
    Regards,
    Junia
