CSS: Centering via the CSS box model

I have a page where I want a short line of text to center both horizontally and vertically. I've successfully used margin:0 auto in the past to center horizontally, but it's not working vertically. Any tips on why not and what route I should take?

Better try that again....
The code got stripped out by this wonderful Jives Forum System.  Try again, of course:
1) HTML CODE:
 <div id="test">
<p>The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.  The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.  The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.</p>
<p>The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.  The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.  The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.</p>
<p>The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.  The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.  The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.</p>
</div>
2) The CSS code to go with it:
#test {     border: 5px  double #eee;     display: table-cell;     background-color: blue;     color: yellow;     height: 600px;     width: 800px;     margin: 0 auto;     font-size: 16px;     vertical-align: middle;     text-align: center; }
I hope this satifies Murray in all material respect.  Perhaps he should also complain to JIVES about their wonderful forum software which most people love to hate.  I will try to post a test page on a server in due course when I am at my real watertight desktop!  I don't want to be hacked!

  • Adjusting Column Widths Via the CSS in 6.5+

    It is pretty easy to adjust column widths in the CSS on 6.5+
    One issue that we encountered that was slightly trickier (for non-css folks like me) was ensuring that the columns were set at 100% for the 2 column layouts.
    The below code will set the narrow columns on 2/3 column layouts to be 200px wide, and ensure that the wide column maintains 100%
    .columnOne               { text-align: left;}
    .columnTwo               { text-align: center; }
    .columnThree               { text-align: left;width:200; }
    .layoutOneColumn               { table-layout: auto; }
    .layoutOneColumn .columnOne     { width: 100%; }
    .layoutTwoColumnNarrowWide     { table-layout: auto; }
    .layoutTwoColumnNarrowWide .columnOne          { }
    .layoutTwoColumnNarrowWide .columnOne .portletBody     {  }
    .layoutTwoColumnNarrowWide .columnTwo .portletBody     { background-color: #FFFFFF; }
    .layoutTwoColumnWideNarrow               { table-layout: auto; }
    .layoutTwoColumnWideNarrow .columnOne .portletBody     { background-color: #FFFFFF; }
    .layoutTwoColumnWideNarrow .columnTwo          {width: 200; }
    .layoutTwoColumnWideNarrow .columnTwo .portletBody     { width: 200; }
    .layoutThreeColumn                    { table-layout: auto; }
    .layoutThreeColumn .columnOne               { }
    .layoutThreeColumn .columnOne .portletBody          {  }
    .layoutThreeColumn .columnTwo .portletBody          { background-color: #FFFFFF; }
    .layoutThreeColumn .columnThree               { }
    .layoutThreeColumn .columnThree .portletBody          {  }
    /* Set the invisible image */
    #portletColumnFormatter_0 img {width:200px;}
    #portletColumnFormatter_1 img{width:100%;}
    #portletColumnFormatter_2 img{width:200px;}

    I don't understand?  I launch PSE 9 from the task bar.  This is the screen I get.
    I've tried right clicking everything I can think of w/o success.
    Once I click "organize", it's too late.  The organizer is coming up.
    Maybe I don't know for sure what the "Organizer icon" is or where it is?  Or, maybe I shouldn't start it from the task bar?

  • On Dreamweaver CC how do I get to the css rule definition box?

    On the other Dreamweavers when I wanted to edit a css, I selected the css and clicked on the pencil icon to open the css rule definition box.
    The only way I find to get acess to the css rule definition box on the new CC is when I am creating a new div and then there is a option for a new style and it opens the box.
    My question is how do I get to the box once the rule is created? the pencil icon is not there anymore.
    Not good breaking workflows Adobe, some folks have work in progress...
    Please help, thanks.

    I can't remember the last time I used DW's CSS panels. If you know CSS, why not use code view?  DW's Code Hinting is very good &  it's much quicker to edit code directly in the style sheet than it is in CSS panels.
    Nancy O.
    That depends a bit on the situation. For example, in Netbeans I use the live connection with Chrome (embedded view or not) and I can then select an item in the live view in Chrome, which opens the css properties panes. These are quite similar to DW.
    By changing the values in the css properties pane the changes in values are automatically saved in the css file, and visually updated in realtime in Chrome.
    It can be very handy to quickly change the position or margin/padding/size of an element this way without having to switch back and forth to your css. Bit similar to the inspect element pane in FF and Chrome, and the changes are immediately saved.
    When I still used DW I used it in the same manner for quick visual changes - and no reason to rummage through my css code.
    In short, those css inspector panes can work quite efficiently when you need to polish the css code.
    Granted, I would never use it while working on the main css code - but for slight and quick changes it can be a very handy feature.

  • How do I turn-off the CSS rule dialog?

    I would  like to know how to turn-off the CSS rule dialog.
    I support a user who has been using DreamWeaver for years and was recently forced to upgrade to the new version. None of the hundreds of files in the site he maintains use CSS. While I recognize it is a "better" and "more efficient" way to do things --- IF you're a sofware engineer -- it is not even close to being worth the cost to revise the entire site and retrain this user.
    So, how can i turn off, not just the pop-up, but how I can tell DW to just go ahead and do it the old-fashioned, embedded in the HTML way of doing things?
    All the user wants to do is change the color of some keywords, css is overkill when that's all he's doing.
    We'd go back to the previous version except the office was forced onto Vista and the older version won't run.

    ADDING  FONT  TAGS:
    By David Powers from the help doc:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Dreamweaver/10.0_Using/WSc78c5058ca073340dcda9110b1f693f21-7ce ba.html
    You won't see anywhere to enter such information in the HTML Property inspector. Dreamweaver CS4 does not support <font> tags, except in Code view. The W3C deprecated <font> tags ten years ago, so CS4 decided to get rid of them from the main user interface.
    If you want to add styles to a short selection of text, you have two options:
    1. Create embedded styles in the <head> of the page.
    2. Create inline styles.
    Both are done using the Property inspector in CSS mode (click the CSS button on the left). Select the text you want to style. How and where the style is created depends on what you select in the Targeted Rule field.
    If you select <New CSS Rule>, you can then select the font, size, or colour in the Property inspector. As soon as you choose one of these, you will be prompted to choose a class name, and the location of the new style. To embed the style in the <head> of the page,  select "This document only".
    The name of the class will appear in the Targeted Rule field, and you can add other values to it.
    If you select <New Inline Style> in the Targeted Rule field, you can apply any of the properties in the Property inspector. This wraps your text selection with a <span> tag that contains the CSS properties as an inline style, e.g., <span style="font-family: 'Palatino Linotype', 'Book Antiqua', Palatino, serif; font-size: 24px;">Styled text</span>.
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Dreamweaver/10.0_Using/WSc78c5058ca073340dcda9110b1f693f21-7ce ba.html
    Note:   If you select text in Code view, you can apply font tags by selecting Format > Font from the main menu. This works only in Code view; selecting Format > Font in Design view launches the New CSS Rule dialog box.

  • Create print.css that repeats the content twice on page when printed

    Clear as mud, right?  I have a form that the user can fill in and then print to bring to the office.  They need two copies.  It fits on half of the page and could be printed twice on one page and then torn in half in the office.  This would save the user paper.
    I have a @media print css that removes everything from the page except the content div and it works fine.  Is there a way to repeat that div twice on the page via the css?
    Here's the css code:
    @media print {
        .sidebar1, .sidebar2, .title, .title2, .footer { display:none}
        .content { position:absolute;top:10px;left:10px}

    I have never tried to do anything like that in Dreamweaver - this is more a printer management thing. Can you not set the printer up to tile the page so it displays 2 copies on each page?
    Having said that, the only workaround I can think of (someone else might have another idea) is to duplicate your content div in the HTML and position it under your first, then {display:none} the 2nd div in screen.css and turn it on with the print.css.
    Edit:// Having read a little closer, this would only work with static content. The fact you are using a form would be more difficult as you would need to populate both divs with their content.

  • Adding template break box model and font

    I have been working on this one for a few hours now and I can't figure it out. I am working with the HTML5 Boilerplate and recreating the home page for our company. When I do not include the template, the file works fine in IE. But the second I apply a template the whole page becomes broken and the IE box model applies and my font sizing gets messed up.
    I have included a link to the files on a testing server, if this is not allowed, let me know and I can put up the code.
    Excuse the cupcakes from FlexSlider, I have not yet finished that piece.
    Working (no template): http://www.qa.mpay.com/index.asp
    Not working (template): http://www.qa.mpay.com/copy.asp
    Do I just need to rework my entire code so that it is more compliant with the IE Box Model qualifications, ie. div inside of a div with width on one and padding/margin on the other?

    Alright here's the code for the one that's not working. After posting last night, I realized the links were probably only viewable internally.
    UPDATE: Just added <html> after <!doctype html> like I've seen you post about in another forum discussion. That seems to have fixed it. Why is that needed? Isn't it the html tag being opened in the line <html class="no-js" lang="en"> What I mean by this, is why does it work fine in other browsers when that is missing, but it messes up with IE?
    P.S. I'm starting to blame H5BP for poor documentation, but I'm learning a lot in the process.

  • How do I create a Campaign Entry via the Bulk API

    I am importing contacts into Eloqua via an Audience App and the Bulk API.  When if I look in the Campaign Entry Report, those contacts don't appear.  If I examine a contact that does appear in the report, I see that it has Campaign Entry and Campaign Membership under Recent Activity.  What do I need to do to make that happen for the contacts I'm importing via the Bulk API?  I've looked through the API documentation but haven't found what I need.

    In the Style editor you only see the CSS files used by the website in the currently selected tab.
    You won't see any references to the userContent.css file via the built-in Inspector.
    Only the DOM Inspector show such CSS rules if you inspect an element that have a matching selector.
    You do not need to import the userContent.css file as Firefox does this automatically each time you start Firefox and the rules that apply will automatically be added.

  • Check you are set up to watch BT Sport via the app...

    Hello all
    We’re aware that a number of you are having problems accessing the BT Sport app. We’re looking into the specific scenarios some of you have described but we thought it would be useful to post up this general guidance as well.
    Check you’re ready to watch on the app
    If you have ordered BT Sport to watch on BT TV, YouView or Sky you should be set up to use the app as well. All you need to do is download it. You can do that by going to the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store.
    If you want to watch on the app or online only, not on TV
    If you are a BT Broadband customer and you just want to watch BT Sport online or via the app (not via TV) you need to activate it first. To activate, just log in to My BT, scroll down and click on BT Sport and follow the steps. If you have more than one account number in your My BT profile, remember to switch onto the one your BT Broadband is billed to.
    Thanks

    Well, it's the 10th September, and my BT Broadband is finally activated; but still no BT Sport via the Sky box
    I've tried to link my Sky viewing card to mt BT account online, but I just get the message
    "Good news!You've already got access to BT Sport. Watch online at btsport.com or via our Apple and Android apps. If you'd like to talk to us about upgrading your BT Sport Pack so you can watch via your TV please call us on 0800 731 0286."
    What? I don't want to watch on a computer or phone. I want to watch it on my TV.
    Anyway, I called the number, waited on hold for 26 minutes before being cut off.
    What is going on?

  • When can I watch BT Sport via the Sky Platform

    I have just sent the following message via the BT 'email us' form, but then I received an email back saying that it could take up to 10 days to respond . Given that I only have another 3 days to cancel my order (if necessary) I thought I'd try and find an answer on here, so here's the message. Thanks in advance...
    Please inform me of the DEFINITIVE date on which I'll be able to activate BT Sport through my Sky HD box.
    It is (in theory) already active for viewing online or via the app, but I am so far unable to link my Sky viewing card because of an "outstanding order" on my account.
    I have spoken to various members of your staff (both on the 'phone and via LiveChat, for which I have the transcript) and I am being given contradictory answers. These answers have varied as follows.
    1. I will be able to activate it as soon as I place the order for BT Broadband (so I placed the order without delay on 17/08/2012).
    2. I was then told this would be 24 hours after placing said order, so I waited.
    3. Thirdly I was told that I could activate it as soon as I give you my MAC key (so I did this on 19/08/2012 as a direct result of this advice, even though I could be charged by my previous Broadband provider for using the key within 7 days).
    4. When that didn't work I was told to wait 24 hours after using the MAC key.
    5. Finally I was told that I would have to wait until after my BT Broadband goes live on 10th September.
    Answers 1-4 have turned out to be false, and as I am now starting to lose faith in the answers provided by BT, I don't hold out much hope for answer 5.
    Considering that my reason for ordering BT Broadband was so that I could get BT Sport via the Sky platform, I am increasingly under the impression that I have been mis-sold the product.
    Could you therefore please tell me EXACTLY WHEN I'll be able to activate BT Sport via the Sky platform.
    Thank you

  • CSS layout box model?

    Hi, I'm using Dreamweaver cs4. I downloaded a diablo 3
    fansite kit from blizzard, and was looking at their code &
    style sheets and such for reference while learning to use DIV to
    layout new websites. I pretty much have the same DIV box going for
    all the content in the middle. But when i click on their DIV box,
    it shows margin on the left and the right, and while in design
    view, automatically centers their DIV box.
    I created a page, setup a div box 1000px wide, centered it,
    and it does not give me a preview of it centered while in design
    view, nor does it show me the margins & padding (displays
    diagonal white transparant stripes where the padding & margins
    goes). i made sure i clicked the "CSS Layout Box Model" in the
    visual aid menu, but it does not want to work on my page, yet i can
    turn it on and off on the fan site index page. How do i make it
    work on my page?
    Thx

    Which page? Can we see the other one too?

  • Where is the CSS styles box

    So im looking at this tutorial by SikhStar97, and he is adding a layout which i want to do but he used something from the CSS styles box and i cant seem to find that though i have searched it up, i found it was in the window and when i looked in window i found nothing called CSS styles box but i did find "transitions" and "designer" can someone please help me?

    Hello goldboy,
    because of your "Umm i dont know ..." I want to show you - in addition to "es73's" valuable informations - where you can see the verions number (translated from my German DW): Help >  About Dreamweaver and you will get something like that:

  • CSS Centered & Fixed Width Layout

    I'm trying to use CSS for building a new layout and do so without resorting to the old methods, like using tables. But I can't even get past a very basic thing using Dreamweaver CS5.5. I want the page layout to be a fixed width yet centered in the browser window instead of stuck to the left. Lots of web sites do this (even Adobe's main site).
    In the past I would just create a parent table and simply give it a center alignment then build everything else inside of it. Easy. Unless I'm overlooking something obvious there appears to be no way at all to apply the same sort of alignment property to a DIV-based container. Dreamweaver provides lots and lots of other formatting options, but page alignment for that DIV object isn't there.
    If I could just get the first big overall DIV centered on the page where I want it I think I could use absolute positioning on the DIVs inside of it.
    I've searched around for examples on how to code CSS to make this work, but haven't been able to simply cut and paste the code into Dreamweaver to make it happen. I need to learn how to do this correctly using Dreamweaver's own CSS property dialog boxes.

    If I could just get the first big overall DIV centered on the page where I want it I think I could use absolute positioning on the DIVs inside of it.
    OMG no.  You don't want to use absolute positioning at all, until you understand CSS positioning fully.

  • Disabling a CSS rule in the Page Inspector deletes it

    I have been using the Firefox Page Inspector lately to see how it compares to Firebug. I noticed that if you disable a CSS rule by unchecking the checkbox next to it, it is still shown in the inspector, so you can check the box again and reenable it. However, if I click some other element, and then come back to the previous one, I found that the CSS rule seems to have been deleted entirely i.e. there is no checkbox for me to check to reenable that rule.
    This is a pretty major problem for me, as Firebug and Chrome's inspector both remember rules you have disabled and give you the options of reenabling them again later, even if you click a different element. Is it a problem with my particular installation of firefox, or is it just a bug with the inspector?

    I've seen that too.<br />
    What is happening that deleting and adding rules rules is the same as editing the style sheet via the style editor and changes that you make are actually edits in the style sheet file.<br />
    I agree that it would be better to comment out rules so you could at least enable them by editing the file rather than removing the rule completely.

  • Modifying the css of a Symbol on hover

    I am trying to change the z-index of a symbol upon hover. This symbol has a number of elements inside of it with their own timeline that triggers upon hover as well. I tried doing so at first through something along the lines of:
    sym.getSymbol("mySymbol").css("z-index","10");
    This did not work (and it's not the z-index either, I tried changing something basic like border color and it would not do so). However if this were an element as opposed to a symbol, this code would work.
    sym.$("myElement").css("z-index","10");
    What's confusing to me about this is that if you view the source code of an Edge document, converting a group of elements into a symbol on the HTML side merely throws these elements into a DIV. So why wouldn't you be able to modify the css in the same way you are able to with elements in Edge? Am I doing something wrong? I also tried adding a class name to the symbol, but I am unsure of how to select a css class created through Edge (via the method in the image below).

    You need to use an integer, not a string:
    sym.$("myElement").css("z-index",10);
