CSS Float Drop in IE8 but not Compatibility Mode

I'm testing code for my home page across different browsers, and encountered the common IE float drop problem.  This does not occur in Firefox, Chrome, Opera, or IE8 in Compatibility Mode; but does occur in IE8 standard mode.  It's a bit confusing, since I usually encounter this problem in Compatibility Mode.
I have tried using clear:none; as I thought the content was clearing the float:left of a large flash image on the left side of the window, but it didn't solve the problem.  I have 3 image buttons whose combined heights equate that of the flash image (all 622px), and these are all in a column div floating to the right.  All of these are flush margin:0 and padding:0, border:none.  The flash image has it's own class stating margin:0, padding:0, border:none as well.  These divs are fixed pixel widths and heights.  I tried placing them in a larger container div with fixed width and height, which didn't solve the problem.  Again, this only occurs in IE8 Compatibility Mode.
This is the code below:
div id="container">
embed src="index.swf" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" height="622" width="509" align="left" class="flashhome"> /embed>
div id="homecontright">
  a href="services.html?panel=5">
  img src="button1.gif" align="top" border="0" alt="b1" class="imageright"/> /a>
  a href="smt.html">
   img src="button2.gif" align="top" border="0" alt="b2" class="imageright"/> /a>
   a href="jobs.html">
   img src="button3" align="top" border="0" alt="b3" class="imageright"/> /a>
/div>
  div class="floatfix"> /div>
   div id="foot" align="center">
   contact info footer
   /div>
   /div>
Here is the style information from my separate stylesheet
#homecontright { margin:0; padding:0; border:none; width:493px; height:622px; overflow:visible; float:right; display:block; }
.imageright {margin-left: auto; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; display: block; float: right }
.flashhome { width:509px; height:622px; margin:0; padding:0; float:left; border:none; }
div#container { margin-left:auto; margin-right:auto; margin-bottom:0; width:1002px; background-color:#A8CBE9; }
div#foot {      background-color:#003366;      border-color:#a8cbe9;      border-width:thin;      border-style:solid;      font-size:10px;      width:996px;      padding:0.2em;      margin-left:auto;     margin-right:auto;      text-align:center;      font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;      font-weight:bold;      color:#FFFFFF;      height:10px; }
.floatfix { clear:both; }
I've tried removing all the floats, even, especially the ones in the nested divs/class elements; but this didn't do a thing.  This leads me to wonder if this really is a float drop problem or am I missing something?
EDIT: I fail at posting code so I've removed the front bracket from all tags.  Also, added a diagram to show what it's supposed to look like and what is happening in IE 8 Compatibility.  The margins do not exist, they are there so you can see individual elements

I tried adjusting the images on the right -10px and had the same result.  Those images were actually created with margins within the image, so everything should be flush.
I noticed, however, that even in browsers where everything aligns correctly, there seems to be a 2-3px jog between the flash image and the buttons on the right.  That strange link to the bottom right of the flash image is still appearing as well, somehow having to do with the top banner image when right clicked.  I tried changing the URL of that banner and the link changed as well, confirming my suspicion that they're linked.  I attempted to contain that image in a fixed width div with no results.  This link does not appear in other browsers, nor does it appear on any other pages that I used that code on.
Code for my banner:
<...a href="index.html"><img src="index/accuweb_c3homebannerR1a.jpg" alt="banner" border="0" class="banner"/><.../a>

  • Flash videos choppy in IE8 but not Firefox?

    I noticed when watching most Flash content in IE8 it has a lot of brief pauses which makes videos appear choppy, But if I open the same video in Firefox it plays fine, Is there anything I can check that might be causing this issue? Im running the same (latest) version of flash in both browsers.
    Here's one example, If I play this in Firefox the framerate is smooth, but in IE8 it has random pauses throughout the video: http://www.gametrailers.com/video/review-hd-modnation-racers/100079

    Thanks! BTW I'm also having trouble updating Adobe Reader. I have 9.4.0 and want to update to the new Adobe Reader X. I keep getting Error 1402 which refers to the registry keys. I am unable to completely uninstall the old version. After receiving the error message it reloades the older version. I read about how to modify the registry to accept it but I believe this is a very wierd way to have to get an update loaded. Any suggestions?

    Subject: Flash Player works in IE8 but not Safari
    Hi Bruce, Adobe Flash Player is Installed separately into IE, since Windows uses the ActiveX Control. Firefox and other non-IE
    browsers must use the plugin Installer.
    This is the Adobe site :

    Hope that explains it.

    If you dropped the device and cannot get it to start up, then you have probably damaged it to the point it needs to be looked at by Apple or your Authorized Apple Service Provider, whomever handles service in your location. User damage is not covered under warranty, so be prepared to pay.

    Hi, i have a similar problem..
    These URL returns a XML:

  • Swf displays in ie8, but not 7

    I inserted three swf files into my page. One is a progressive video in the main column. The second is a flash menu in a floating right column. The third is a scrolling photo slideshow, also in the right column. All three display properly in IE8, but none of the swf elements display in the right column on IE7. The video does play in the main column though. Any ideas?

    please replace your code for this section with this (this works on my tests with IE 6 7 8, Safari, FF, Opera, Chrome):

    The code you have posted is not the same code as used in:

    in the link above.
    The reason that the Flash is not displaying in FF is that the portion of the code used by FF was omitted. The code currently used on the page only works in IE.
    I'm no great fan of the IE conditional statements used in the code you posted so I don't blame you for not using it. But you do need to provide something for FF.... the old, out dated method would be to add and <embed> for FF... here's the newer method..
    So either use code you posted above or better yet, get rid of that and replace the current <object> with

    </div>
    Give that a try. Will work in both FF and newer IE versions.

  • CFWindow 404 in IE8 but not Firefox

    We are working on a new (but simple) 'help' system for our web site in which specific pages will have links to them that call /help.cfm#anchorName (where anchorName is the particular subject we want).
    All it needs to work is this:
    <cfset helpStr="/inleague/help.cfm" & chr(35) & arguments.helpset>
    <cfwindow source="#helpStr#" height="600" width="750" initshow="false" name="helpWindow"  x="100" y="225" />
      <a href="javascript:void(0);" onClick="javascript:ColdFusion.Window.show('helpWindow')">help for this page</a> :
    Nothing fancy (that's kind of the point.) This works fine ... in Firefox! In IE8 we get a straight-up 404 File not Found in the CFWINDOW, and if we turn on cfdebug, we get this from the AJAX logger:

    error:http: Error retrieving markup for  element helpWindow_body : Not Found

    In Firefox, the same AJAX debugger with the same code gives us this:

    I would've thought that this would be some kind of mapping issue, but we're not using any fancy mapping here, and a server-side mapping issue wouldn't work in Firefox but not IE8. I have a feeling this is something really dumb, but I can't figure it out. any tips?

  • Why can firefox beta, aurora, and nightly open in windows 8.1 desktop mode but not app mode?

    The applications will launch in desktop mode but not in a windows 8.1 app I am hoping for help with this I have tried everything to fix crashing or slowness and have reinstalled the program in aurora nightly or even firefox beta forms. Help!

    Hi!
    You may want to take a look at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-install-firefox-windows-8-touch
    I would assume the options to switch into it would be the same. I can't confirm though since I don't run Windows 8.

  • Starcraft lags in full screen mode but not minimzed mode, hardware issue?

    hi
    recently ive noticed that starcraft ( fully updated ) in fullscreen mode lags incredibly, pratically beyond being playable, im not sure what this is due to, but in minimized mode it plays just fine, the game is really old and i dont really see any software reason for this.
    here are some relevant notes
    my computer was affected by the nvidia issue and the part was replaced less than a year ago, so i dont think its the video card, or could it be?
    my computer has been heating up a bit for like 3 months, i recently downloaded the smc fan control to control that and its been fine since then
    i ran the hardware test that came with the comp and everything seems to be fine
    i ran techtools pro too and everything it checked seemed to be fine
    dont know what else to say, this kinda confused me, if anyone knows anything, i would be greatful

    I cant say I've tried starcraft on it but I have played WoW on mine, extensively. And it does the same for me, suggesting its a matter of software design... since they are both from Blizzard.
    Its quite a notable difference too...

  • Why has CAST(FieldName to float) failed in view but not in SELECT?

    I've just solved a problem but I'm still not sure what the problem is!
    I have a data (staging) table with all values stored as text. The data is converted to the correct data-type and also aggregated somewhat in a view. A select statement with the conversion works. A select statement with the conversion and aggregation (GROUP
    BY) works. Creating a view of the conversion and aggregation works. However, on selecting from the view (e.g. SELECT TOP 1000 * FROM ViewName) it fails saying it cannot convert from varchar to float. There are no visible characters in the field apart from
    numbers between 0 and 9, a decimal point and sometimes a leading minus sign (-).
    The fix? Cast to money and then cast to float.
    The problem? I don't know! What was the problem? Some of the values had up to 10 decimal places. Was that a problem? Was it really an overflow error masquerading as conversion error? The longest strings present were:
    -2.609763091
    -0.082456066
    -0.674010546

    -0.002961949
    -0.319269185

    Would really like to know what caused this so I can spot it in future before it happens.
    Cheers.

    One possibility is that the two execution plans are different.  The logical order of the way SQL processes the clauses a SELECT query is FROM, ON, OUTER, WHERE, GROUP BY, CUBE | ROLLUP, HAVING, SELECT, DISTINCT, ORDER BY, TOP.  (Actually that's
    what I learned, now there are some additional things like APPLY, but for our purposes we can ignore them).  The important thing to know is that that is the LOGICAL order, but SQL is allowed (and often does) go change that order to anything it wants as
    long as it returns the correct result.
    So, for example, if your FROM clause a number of rows and some of those rows contain data which would cause a CAST (or anything else) in the SELECT clause to fail, but those rows are eliminated by your WHERE clause.  Then SQL could do
    FROM, WHERE, SELECT and the query works, or
    FROM, SELECT, WHERE and the query fails.  And, in general, you cannot control which plan SQL will use.
    So, for example, if you have a table named T with two integer columns I and J and some rows in the table have a value of 0 in the column J and you run
    SELECT I/J FROM T WHERE J<>0
    it might work and you might get a divide by zero error.  So one safe way to handle this is to write your query as
    SELECT I/(CASE WHEN J <> 0 THEN J ELSE NULL END) WHERE J<>0
    Another way would be to create a temp table and write an insert statement that inserted into that temp table only the rows where J<>0 and then do the query from the temp table.  Since that is two SQL commands, SQL is forced to do them in order,
    it cannot combine them and reorder the processing, that would look like
    Create Table #T(I int, J int);
    Insert Table #T(I, J)
    Select I, J FROM T WHERE J<>0;
    Select I/J From #T;
    Drop Table #T;
    You could try doing the equivalent of one of those to your query and see if that makes the problem go away.
    Now I know you are going to ask "Why did the view use to work and it doesn't anymore?" and "Why does using the view and the table return different results".  My guess is that you are getting different plans for the view and the table,
    why that is, I don't know, it is often difficult to answer that type of question.  My best guess for why the view used to work, then you ALTERED it, and then changed it back to the original form and it fails even though it is exactly the same as the old
    view that was working is, when you had the old view, then was a cached execution plan that was working.  That execution plan might have been created a good while ago.  When you ALTERED it, you, of course, got a new plan.  Then when you ALTERED
    it back to the original form, it no longer had the plan it had been using, so had to create a new one, and this new plan was different than the old one.
    Finally, if this is the cause of your problem, then you are not guaranteed that the convert to money, then to float is a permanent fix.  If you have column headers which cannot be converted to either money or float, then it could be the convert to money
    then to float is enough to get SQL to do the WHERE first, then the SELECT.  But there is no guarantee that will be true forever.  Changes in your data distribution and release level of SQL might make that version do the select first and then the
    where.

  • How do I enable Corel Clipbook in Firefox 26, it works in IE8 but not FF26?

    I am trying to get the Corel/Woodperfect utility CLIPBOOK (Version 16.0.0.427) to work in FF26. The utility is like windows clipboard but handles multiple entries and functions with most windows programs. It permits cut and paste between programs like the clipboard. Shortcut keys are assigned for use with the CLIPBOOK program (e.g. ctrl + c, ctrl + x, ctrl + v) which can be customized for each application CLIPBOOK is applied to. To avoid conflicts with clipboard I used other combinations (alt + ctrl + c,alt + ctrl + x, alt +ctrl + v) via "settings" in CLIPBOOK and specifically applied them to FF26 which now lists in the CLIPBOOK settings dialog box as an application to which CLIPBOOK is applied. However, when the shortcut keys are executed in FF26 nothing happens yet the same shortcut keys work in IE8. What is the solution??

    Thanks Prince3333. I have already seen this material and its associated thread. While OK for beginners, it does not address assigning Clipbook to an application which is done in the "Settings" of Clipbook. Even though FF26 is selected, entered, and subsequently displayed in Clipbook "settings" as an application to which Clipbook is presently applied, it does not work in FF26. IE allows Clipbook to work even without specifically applying Clipbook to IE and without it being listed in the applied to applications.

  • Printing multi invoices from ebay works in IE8 but not Firefox, tried all your help tips, still not working?

    I sell things on ebay. I need to print out multi invoices from ebay. When I do this from Firefox the first page has my address but no customer info. It then prints out the second page OK.
    So I have to then return to printing out invoices and check (tick) the ones it's missed. Checked printer page sizes etc, prints fine from other apps and pages.
    I asked on ebay and someone said it's a FIREFOX problem, try it on IE8, -I did and it works ok. Please fix so I don't have to use IE8!

    You have an invalid path reference. in one version of the object tag it reads ../../navbar.swf, in the other this is truncated to ../navbar.swf. Hence the browser can simply not find the file (IE and FF each look at differnt parts of the code).

  • CSS code works in dreamweaver but not in browsers

    I've scaled this code down to the very basics in attempts to find where my error is and I can not figure out what is going wrong here. The code works fine in the dreamweaver CS5 preview, but will not display in browsers properly.
    My first 2 classes are working fine, but my 3rd will not work in the browsers. I have posted this page here http://www.vaporapparel.com/color.html
    The class for the beginning paragraph works fine, the class for the headers works fine, but my 3rd class for the sub-text does not take effect outside of dreamweaver preview. Below the sub-text on this page I posted a screenshot of my css sheet. If you can help me out, please do... It is greatly appreciated
    Thanks!
