CSS - Overflow: Scroll

Hi, I have a question about Overflow: Scroll option. heres
the scneario:
Say I have a box 500px wide, 250 high. theres too much text
to fit into that box, so i go into my css positioning tab and
change "Overflow: " to "Overflow: Scroll". Now in a browser the box
will have a scroll bar. But it has both horizonal & vertical
bars. the bottom one (i'm calling it the horizontal scroll bar) is
grayed out and you cannot use it, but the vertical scroll bar is
usuable so you can scroll up and down to read the text, which works
great. But heres the issue: the horizontal one looks really ugly...
how would i make it so the horizontal one does not show, and only
the vertical scroll bar will? or vis versa for other scenarios?
While were at it, could i change the way the scroll bar
looks, like some websites do?
Thanks.

I have begun always using
:root { overflow-y:scroll; }
to force a scrollbar on FF and Safari on all pages. It seems
to work
fine....

  • Editable div using overflow: scroll not eitable in Contribute

I have created a website using Dreamweaver 5. Within the site I created a template page with an editable text region. Within that region I have a div that has a overflow: scroll; command on some of the pages. On all the pages that I have used this div within the editable region my customer, who is using Adobe Contribute, can not edit the text. What do I need to do to make this text accessible to them while using Contribute to edit the copy.

my customer, who is using Adobe Contribute, can not edit the text.
I'm not sure you can do anything here.  But ask them to try double clicking on the text within that region.

  • Usability question: Iframe or DIV overflow-scroll

    Hi,
I have designed a site: www.banacreative.com that uses a DIV
    with
overflow scroll for the text content area. From a design
    standpoint I
don't like endlessly scrolling pages filled with lots of
    boring text, so
I have chosen to put the long text in a scroll DIV keeping
    the design
intact. I have gotten some feedback that having two scroll
    bars - one
for the HTML page, and one for the DIV - is confusing. I'm
    therefore
looking for comments on this. Is this something to be avoided
    in
general, or is this an acceptable solution?
    TIA

you're talking some IE-Windows-specific-behavior described as
if it was something everybody saw...
In my browser (Safari) I get two scroll bars (page, and
scrolling area). The scroll bar of the
scrolling area is in part hidden, as it goes beyond my
    browser window height.
So I have to scroll the page anyways, to see the whole of the
inner scrolling area. And that, is
    very annoying.

  • I'm still seeing the problem with printing when css overflow is hidden (bug 104040) which I had heard was claimed fixed

    Example:
    http://scaled.com/projects/whiteknighttwo_spaceshiptwo_test_summaries
User: firefox 40b7/32 on fedora core 11 x86_64
    Linux 2.6.30.8-64.fc11.x86_64 #1 SMP
Symptom: printout truncates at end of first page instead of printing several pages of information
I've seen this behavior on many websites, this is an example
I can fix it by copying the page and hacking the css to remove all cases of "overflow:hidden". But really firefox needs to handle this - I just discovered from googling that something like this has been a known problem for 10 years.

I just thought I should post this comment, to say my long running problem has finally....FINALLY been sorted out!
It was actually really fixed at the end of September, but I have waited till now, until I received my first proper bill to feel confident enough to say it is finally sorted out.....but what a long winded process!...it took over a month to sort this out, with endless hours on the phone, and endless promises not kept.
The problem with BT's customer service is the fact that going through normal channels, no one person can sort a problem out. You get passed from pillar to post, with every department saying that it is someone else's area of responsibility and then it takes hours on the phone with various deparments in different countries, to get a commitment to sort it out, and then nothing happens!
It was only after posting my final desperate plea on this forum, for all the world to see, that I finally got one of the Moderators to take up my case, and sort the problem out, although it took him over a month to get through all the treacle of BT's admin before a solution was found.
I am very greatful to the Mods for dealing with my problem, which was not of my making, but was due to something going wrong with BT's system.
There is however something fundamentally wrong with BT's Customer Service set up, where no one person seems to take responsibilty for a CXXk-up on their part, and seems unable to have the authority to sort it out.
Once again, Thank you Mods for your help.

  • Scroll indicator sometimes disappears in Safari iOS 8.3 bug. (On scrollable divs using "-webkit-overflow-scrolling:touch")

    Hi,
After updating to iOS 8.3 on an iPad Air, it seems something is wrong with the scroll indicator on scrollable divs in Safari.
It scrolls like it should be, but randomly I just don't get to see the scroll indicator on the right side of the scrollable div.
You can see the problem when refreshing the page, sometimes the scroll indicator is visible and sometimes it is not.
Here is a small example, to view on an iPad/Safari: http://www.roidesrois.be/new_site/div_scroll.html
The code used should be correct. Before the update I never saw this problem before.
Here is an example from somebody else. http://www.quirksmode.org/css/css2/overflowscrolling.html
I see the exact same problem there too.
When using Chrome or Mercury on an iPad I don't see this problem, only in Safari.
Can someone please confirm this problem or maybe has a solution for this?
Is this a bug in Safari that needs to be solved?
    Thnx in advance,
    Kind regards.
    Lester.

    Hello to both of you.
Don't know if this will clarify or mudle the issue but in the same platform context I have a similar issue. Don't know if you are familiar with the LaPresse App (go to AppStore and download it: it is free) but it has vertical text that begins mostly offscreen (just a small portion is visible), which you can swipe upwards and eventually beyond the top, without the tablet page height ever resizing at any moment. It behaves very similarly to an Adobe Premiere title starting off-screen at the bottom, then rolling upwards (e.g. as you would swipe, on the table), and ending off-screen over the top. That's what I'm trying to reproduce using Muse and cannot achieve. As soon as I move the text below the defined page size, Muse automatically expands that page size to accomodate the new text position. I thought of turning off vertical scrolling in the Page properties to force a static page height but the scrolling options in Tablet layout are disabled (by the way: why is that?)

  • Error when opening a pdf file in chinese

    Hello,
I have created a specific PO form by copying the standard one BBP_PO in SRM.
After generating a pdf file with my specific form, I get the error "There was a problem reading this document (15)" when I try to open it.
I can see some characters, and then everything disappears. I have both english and chinese characters.
    The chinese language is installed.
If I use the standard form, I don't get the error !
In the form, I use some standard text, which are created in english and chinese.
    Thanks for your help.

Just so you know, my default PDF can opener remains set to Preview, though I will use Acrobat Reader when and if it serves my need.
The upside of the Show scroll bars set to always is intuitive with applications. The downside is that any web content that has the CSS overflow:scroll configured will permanently have scrollbars attached to that content. At least, that is the behavior with Safari on Mavericks. Since I do web work too, I have left my scrollbar setting to when scrolling.
I believe the OP issues about resizing PDFs has to do with the default nature of Preview to open PDFs in continuous, rather than single page mode. In the former state, one must always fuss with resizing the Preview window, and in the latter, Preview does what it should do — a single, tightly cropped PDF page. Setting the Single Page preference setting in one document does not make this behavior permanent for subsequent documents.
I made two changes to Preview that open any PDF in Single Page mode, and tightly cropped to that page:
Preview PreferencesPDF: Define 100% scale as: Size on screen equals size on printout
    Defaults write
    Change to ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Preview/Data/Library/Preferences
    defaults write com.apple.Preview kPVPDFDefaultPageViewModeOption 1
Continuous view mode is (0) zero
PDF documents will now default to Single Page mode

  • I'm experiencing 2 issues with a site I'm working on that I can't figure out...

I'm developing a site for a local 5-star restaurant, and I'm almost done with the development. Unfortunately, I'm a lot better at design then coding, and I have a couple of problems that I have not found solutions to.
If you have a few minutes, I'd love some advice on how to fix these. They are confusing me a lot...
    1) My pages have a footer that attached to the bottom of the content of the page. On pages that end with tables, there's space between the content and the footer. On pages without tables, it looks fine. Examples:
    Broken:
    [1] http://www.dorseygraphics.com/review/wclg/site_05/winelist.html
    Not broken:
    [2] http://www.dorseygraphics.com/review/wclg/site_05/contact.html
    2) My background image contains some complex elements that overlap (like vines overlapping the content area just a bit on either side). the client LOVES this, so it's not an option to remove. My background is currently a large PNG that easily takes care of the overlapping issue with a simple BG image. But it runs out at the bottom of the page, and some of the pages have content that it too tall for the background.
    Example:
    [3] http://www.dorseygraphics.com/review/wclg/site_05/reviews.html
How would you go about solving this problem? I'm thinking the easiest way is to add a new containing DIV and use it to extend the content area down, but that would mess up the header (I think). I'm confused.

The problem here is the background image.  Do you have the image without the beige background in the center?  If so what you need to do is leave the background of the body as the URL to the image (without the beige in the center), no-repeat, and leave the color as you have.  Then move the lighter beige color background to the container with the navigation and content.

If you look at my above answer I don't think this is a huge problem.  In CSS3 (Safari, Firefox, Chrome, IE9) you can have multiple background images, one static and one repeating in your case.  However, older browsers will not see this, most notably IE 8 and earlier.  You could put the initial image in one layer and make the body background a repeating image but you run the risk of the layers not aligning.
Another alternative is to set the max-height of the content container and then set the overflow attribute to scroll in the CSS (overflow: scroll;).  That would make the content container scroll independantly from the page.
A final alternative would be to discuss the pages with the client again.  For instance with the wine list there are different types of wines.  You could have nested tabbed panels, or you could make a page for each wine type sparkling/white, red, etc. and then have tabbed panels underneath to make the lists shorter.  Otherwise the "Significant Others" or "Riesling" get lost at the bottom of the page, regardless of your background, and users do not know those wines are offered.

  • Horizontal Scrollbar for af:selectOneListBox

    Hi
Is there a way to fix the width of af:selectOneListbox such that for list values that are longer than stipulated width, a horizontal scrollbar can also be introduced to browse these values?
I cannot pre-determine the longest item as values within af:selectOneListbox is loaded dynamically.
    Thanks a lot in advance!

    Hi,
you can try CSS overflow:scroll to get a scrollbar. However, the width might be easier to set using CSS and can also be computed by a managed bean property

  • Need horizontal scrollbar for af:selectManyChoice

    Hi,
I use JDeveloper Studio Edition Version 11.1.1.7.0
There is a field for which we use af:selectManyChoice ADF component.
The component is displaying the vertical scrollbar to show all the values automatically.
And width wise the component is expanded to show values. But, its not expanded to show the value which has maximum value.
Can we add a property to instruct the component to take the maximum width of the values in the list?
Or can we add a horizontal scrollbar to the component?
    Attached the screenshot.

  • How can I create a vertical scroll for text in a 'div' in CSS Dreamweaver?

    Hi there,
I need to flow a lot of text into a CSS div. However, I don't want a big long page as it will look ugly and be inconsistent with the other pages in the site.
I need to be able to put in a vertical scroll directly in the div containing the text (not on the whole page) so the user can scroll the text down without moving down the whole page.
Is there a way for me to do this?
I'm a beginner to CSS so a step by step for dummies approach would be most helpful.
Thanks in advance for any help!

    use the overflow:scroll property:

  • Toggling overflow CSS breaks streaming media

Dynamically changing the overflow property of 'body' or 'html' will cause any streaming media on the page (Youtube, MP3 players, etc) to stop streaming and reset themselves.
For instance, if I have a Youtube video streaming and I use jQuery to do $('html').css({overflow: 'hidden'}) [or visible, doesn't matter as long as it's being changed], then the video will stop streaming and reset as if the page was refreshed.
This is causing a major problem in an AJAX application I am developing that uses jQuery to manipulate CSS overflow to hide the scroll bars. On all other major browsers (Chrome, Safari, IE) this works fine (both Mac and PC), but on Firefox (Mac and PC) it breaks.
Please let me know when/if you have this bug fixed or if there is a work-around. Thank you.

  • Scrolling main content in an AP Div disappearing behind other AP Divs...?

Newbie here, using CS3. No CSS power user (yet!)--general concepts, yes, but not much practice. Meanwhile two recent CS3 classes, several books, and a concerted search through online forums have failed to point me toward a fix for this prob. Any help greatly appreciated.
Prob statement: In design view the core content of my pages disappears behind my footer and a secondary box, both AP Divs, so that I cannot see or edit anything beyond the bottom edge of the core-content AP Div. Overflow for that AP Div is set to scroll. The "obscured" content shows up only as an outlined shape extending past the footer etc. (and I can see some of the obscured text "through" the footer). Down arrow doesn't get me there: it just scoots down the outlined-but-obscured section. Doubleclicking highlights everything that's obscured so that I can see the relative shapes of the paragraphs, but doesn't expose the content. This seemed to start the first time I set the content div to scroll any overflow. I've changed it back/forth since; no joy.
Rendered in IE or Firefox, all the pages with all their varying content lengths look fine. Scrollbar works great. It's just that in order to edit or compose further, I have to copy everything into Notepad or something, work there, and then paste it back into DW. Definitely non-optimum, though: can't format or add hyperlinks to the content.
I'm using AP Divs, with scroll on in the "content" AP Div, because I couldn't figure out how to create a template where the footer would slide down the page in response to varying amounts of content. Started out with a table to handle all this, but an instructor recommended AP Divs so I went that way. I'd like to resolve this, rather than just go back to using tables while leaving this AP Div oddness a mystery.
The footer is full of a Spry tabbed panels giving my legal/green/design statements and other small bits of info. The secondary box is an AP Div called "quotations" and is for friendly little bits of cute/clever nonsense at the bottom of each page.
Tried a number of different settings so far and by now I've probably truly messed things up. Can anyone suggest a fix?
The code for the template file seems long, so my apologies. However, the content type isn't allowed for attachments so I've pasted it in below.
    Much appreciation!

I hadn't looked at the code at all. I was relying on the Dreamweaver GUI to correctly guide me to a desired outcome.
I think that this is not a desirable approach to Dreamweaver, which will write perfect HTML if you let it, but it's too easy to click buttons and apply wizards without regard for the markup consequences, thereby producing a veritable pig's ear of a page.  If you are going to use DW professionally, you will have to become comfortable with code.  That doesn't mean you will have to spend 100% of your time in Code view, but you will definitely need to watch the code as it is formulated.
I'm not starting from an engineering background.
Neither did I.  But I did start with a sincere desire to become proficient, and to learn the technology.
Murray, I get the idea of redoing my template without AP Divs, and will get into that. I don't know what "image swaps and links" mean, though. Would you mind teaching this newbie on this point?
Not at all.  When you select the "NavBar" feature, you are placing elements and code on your page that were designed in the dark ages of HTML (frames).  Some of the features in the NavBar will only work in a framed page (the down image and the over while down).  The code is antique, invalid, and just wrong to be included.  My suggestion was to forego this and just place your button images on the page (in whatever container you need to use), and apply links to them so that they link to the desired pages.  Then apply swap image behaviors to them to create your rollover effects, one for each button.  The result will be modern code, that has none of the legacy stuff of the navbar, and that will work fine for you.  As you become more familiar with CSS you can investigate even better ways to do such menus (if you want a preview of this, Google "CSS Sprites).  The latter method is usually the only way I do menus anymore.  And even then, I use both text and graphics for accessability and SEO purposes.
I will say that I like your attitude.  A determination to learn and improve is a winning approach.

  • Scrolling Text Box question

I'm changing a site for a friend. She wants to add a scrolling text box with a bio of herself on the grid we're already using on her page. The problems I'm having are it's difficult to resize the box once on the grid (you can't) and I keep missing anything that looks like the ability to scroll up and down on the text box. I'm sure I'm missing something which is why I'm here. :-)
    Thanks in advance! :-)

check out the overflow:scroll command in the css - I'm not sure how this works with grids, however - but it could be a starting point....
    hope this helps

  • How can I browse my page without a scroll bar?

Hi, I 'd like to have  my site in specific size(1360x768pix) without a scroll bar,  since I 'm making it for a wide screen PC for a special occasion.
I unchecked "sticky footer" , set 0 for both "Mergin" and "padding" of the "Page property".
Although I set page size and property to make it fit on the screen, It shows scroll bars on the right and bottm of the browser.
Is there any way to get rid of a scroll bar??
It would be great if you could give me some ideas.
    Thanx!

    Thanks for the tip, guys!!
    I insert the
    <style type="text/css">
    overflow:hidden;
    </style>
code in the<head>Sec. in the Matadata panel of the PageProperties. But I can't get rid of the scroll bar yet.
Do I do that procedure for the every pages?? There's no Metadata panel in the Master page's Page property but other's. Thanx!
