Curios about Lync 2013 std FE SQL instances - 3 of them?

Hi there.
We are just "curios" about instances which were created in SQL express for Lync server 2013 standard front end.
Those are: LyncLocal, RTC, RTCLocal.
We were wondering is it necessary to have all the three ones?
What is the "role" of every instance?
bostjanc

Yes. It is necessary to have all three databases.
You can take a look at Jeff's blog here for more detailed information
http://blog.schertz.name/2013/03/lync-server-2013-deployment-part-2/
Also, take a look at the following technet article which explains what each database is used for

  • Does Lync 2013 work with SQL 2012 always on Feature?

    Howdy,
I'm not that even "ok" when it come to SQL :)
so my question Does Lync 2013 Enterprise work with SQL 2012 "Always on" Feature or only Mirroring?
    Regards,

It will not be supported. Mirroring is your only option.

  • Lync 2013 Std and Ent Edition Edge co-existence

    Hi all,
I'm seeing an odd issue with our current migration. We have the following:
Site1: Lync 2013 Standard with Edge server.
Site 2: Lync 2013 EE with 3 FEs, mirrored DBs and no Edge server deployed
All users live on Site1 and all is ok. Site 1 contains the CMS & PChat DB's
I'm re-using the current Edge server in Site1 as I need to retain the same URLs at the moment - the long term plan will be to build up a new Edge pool in Site2 once Site1 has been decommed.
I'm planning to move a bunch of pilot users onto Site 2 in the next week, but I see the following issues when I move a couple of test accounts into the pool:
Can't start a "meet now" conference
    Can't expand Disti Lists
Can't search for contacts - addressbook never seems to download
    Can't see federated contacts
P2P IM & AV works fine.
Client logging from a user in the new EE pool shows the following errors when try to communicate with a federated partner:
    ms-diagnostics: 1038;reason="Failed to connect to a peer server";fqdn="standardserver.corp.domain.local:5062";ip-address="172.20.130.32";peer-type="InternalServer";winsock-code="10061";winsock-info="The
peer actively refused the connection attempt";source="FEPool.corp.domain.local"
My initial thoughts that its something to do with firewalling but I can ping & telnet from the old Front End and Edge over to the new FE pool (which are geographically separated and on different subnets) so I would have thought media should be able to
flow between the 2 sites without a problem. The FE pool has a HLB sitting in front of it.
I can also see our Exchange server ok from the new FE pool too.
Looking for any suggestions on what else I can look at.

    Hi,
From your description, did you mean you don’t move anything from Standard pool to Enterprise pool (just move test users to Enterprise pool to test the function)?
Did you test internal or external of your corporation?
Please create a new Lync account on Lync 2013 Enterprise pool to check if the issue also happen.
Please check if CMS replication has update to the latest status with the help of following cmdlet:
    Get-CsManagementStoreReplicationStatus.
If the status not to the latest status, you can invoke by the following cmdlet:
    Invoke-CsManagementStoreReplication

    Hi Eason,
I have 2 laptops I'm testing with 2 different accounts that were initally provisioned on the new pool, one is connected to our corp LAN, the other is on our guest wifi to simulate an external connection.
CMS replication looks ok (servernames changed for obvious reasons!):

  • Lync 2013: SQL instance - Shared or Not Shared !?

I'll keep this straight to the point... I'm implementing Lync 2013 at my company and we stumbled on one SQL Cluster situation that's causing some questions on the DBA team.
    So the situation is....
    Background:
We currently have a two node SQL 2008 R2 (SP2) Cluster with two instances in it that are shared for other applications.
    Question:
Is it recommended by Microsoft (or any Lync Expert at all) to use one of these instances for Lync 2013 databases, or should it be a separated instance to host Lync 2013 Databases?
Note: If to be created the new instance, that instance will be living in the same cluster.
Thank you all in advance for comments on this.

Thanks to both for the replies. It does help me thinking about the subject.
I've meanwhile opened an advisory case with MS to check what they say about it. (I'm posting the results afterwards of course to share their advice)
I agree with both of you, and in fact I don't really like the idea of having a shared instance for Lync 2013 with other products (specially one of them that's in there that is Sharepoint 2013). I'm quite curious on knowing how will the instance behave once
Sharepoint 2013 decides to "eat up" all the resources...
I think that having the separated instance adds at least 2 very good (and important values) that is:
1 - Security (at the instance level.. no unwanted sysadmin's - we have persistent chat by some God forsaken reason... though I don't like the idea that a DBA with the right knowledge to read our C*O's chat's going around...)
2 - Resource assignment control (better memory control, possibility of "shifting" the instance to another place if necessary + if someone "brings down" the shared instance for any reason, lync can continue to function)
The IO concern regarding lots of SQLServer.exe running around, it's also a valid concern in my opinion, though at IO level is basically the same story because what matters is the DB file read-write operations that are ongoing and that will consume the same
resources either you're in a dedicated instance or separated one...
Still our DBA brings up the fact that we need to use a shared instance for everything and he wants me to put Lync all together with the other DB's (Sharepoint 2013 included...).
What are your thoughts about this?
Thanks once again for your time and comments.

  • Crazy idea about having LYNC 2013 disaster recovery scenario

    Hi guys!
We are thinking about one idea with least effort's about having lync backup solution.
We have Lync 2013 std server and Lync 2013 edge server on ESXi, so they are virtual machine.
Because lots of users are using LYNC voip the idea is to have a ready-steady backup solution in case if those virtual machines got corrupted.
The idea is to install another vmware esxi server and copy both virtual machines on this server (let's say every first week on the month).
Would be this a satisfied DR solution in case if lync 2013 std server and edge server got corrupted on primary site, we just power on new esxi server where virtual machines were copied, and turn them on manually?
    bostjanc

You can pool pair Lync 2013 Standard Edition, in fact it is the recommended and supported method of providing Disaster Recovery.
In Standard you can't have High Availability (multiple servers in a single pool) but you can pool pair.
Configure two separate pools and then pair them together. SHould you need to failover the RTO  (recovery time objective) which is the time target for a failover is 30 minutes.
The only thing to note is that you can only pool same editions (so Ent with Ent and Std with Std)

  • Lync 2011 for MAC and Lync 2013 Server Std

    Hello,
We are using a Lync 2013 Std (single-server) as a POC.  It works fine for Windows-clients but I cannot connect using Lync 2011 for MAC from any MAC machine.
Using automatic configuration, I cannot connect to the Lync server.
Using manual configuration (I tried putting in just the server name and adding port 5061 to it, both to no avail) I keep getting 'Sign in to Lync failed.  Please verify your credentials and try again.'.
Lync server is on the latest CU version with all components, MAC clients are on update 140321.
I noticed that Lync tries to create the OC_keycontainer_username@domain, but it seems not te be created.  It flashes by and disappears again when the client fails to login.  I have imported the Lync server certificate, issued by our windows 2012
root CA, on the Mac clients and have stored it in the 'Login' container.
Does anybody know if Lync2011 for Mac is supported for use with Lync server 2013 Std?
    Cheers

    Hi,
To clear cached data and corrupted certificates in Lync, you can do the following steps:
    First, delete the following folders:
    Users/Home Folder/Library/Caches/com.microsoft.Lync
    Users/Home Folder/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Microsoft Lync History
Then, delete any corrupted or cached certificates. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Open the Keychain Access certificate management utility. To do this, in Finder, click Applications, click Utilities, and then click Keychain Access. Or, search for Keychain Access by using Spotlight.
    2. In the left pane, click login, and then click Certificates.
    3. In the right pane, find a certificate that's named Unknown or Communications Server, select it, and then delete it.
Note: You may have to unlock your keychain by using your password.
    4. Close Keychain Access.
    5. Restart Lync for Mac.
You can refer to Lync Mac for Lync Server online, but similar for Lync on-premises:

  • The passive node should not be shared by any other SQL instance.

    Dears,
the customer has SQL cluster  with multiple instance for many technology.  Can I install new instance to host Lync backend database or not ???
I found in the below URL
"SQL Clustering support is for an active/passive configuration. For performance reasons, the passive node should not be shared by any other SQL instance."
I want to understand Why Lync 2013 the backend SQL passive node should not be shared by any other SQL instance. whish is mean that I can not install SQL new instance to host LYNC backend on the current my SQL cluster which is work with multiple  instance
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg398990.aspx
    Amr Nassar

    Hi Amr,
Yes you can install a new instance on your cluster to host the Lync back end database. I believe the statement about not sharing the passive node with any other SQL instance refers to a SQL instance outside of the A/P cluster. (Basically the passive node
should be purely that and able to handle the load in the event it becomes the active node without anything else hindering it)
Providing your SQL cluster is able to handle the load Lync places on it along with everything else you should not have any issues.

  • Office web Apps server Lync 2013 Certificate

    Hi,
I'll be installing Office web app (OWA) server with Lync 2013 std edition. External users access is disabled but federation is enabled, mean OWA will be exposed to internet as wabweb.contoso.com, the interal host name of OWA server is owa.contoso.local
Does the certificate on the on OWA server need to have owa.contoso.local and certificate principle name and wabweb.contoso.com as SAN? or only owa.contoso.local is enough?

It really depends on how you publish the server to the internet. You have some options. If you are publishing this via a reverse proxy, internally you would have a private cert with .local on it and the public name on the reverse proxy.  If you are
punching a firewall hole/NAT directly to the server your best option is to use a public cert on that server directly.
That all said, personally I like to make both the internal and external farm URL the same, and use a public cert on the server (if no reverse proxy is in play).  So I would actually enter the OWAS Farm as wabweb.contoso.com in topology builder, than
when creating the farm via PowerShell make that both the internal and external URL and get a certificate with a single name on it of wabweb.contoso.com.

  • Can I add a two way trusted but in different forest domain to My existing Lync 2013 Topology !

    HI !
We have an installed Lync 2013 Std Edt. setup and its working perfectly for one domain. Our network infrastructure ( LAN ) is being shared with our sister company. They have their own forest and domain and a two ways trust relationship with our domain. I
want to add them in our Lync 2013 topology, is it possible ?? if yes, thn what are the requirements and which changes i need to consider.
Response from experts would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, You must establish a two-way trust between the central forest and user forests to enable distribution group expansion when groups from user forests are synchronized as contacts to the central forest.

  • Lync 2013 FE pool with two server limitions

    Hi,
I have some query about Lync 2013 FE pool with two FE servers.
    1. if I deploy two servers in the one FE pool so what happen if one fe server down ?
    2. will windows fabric work?
    Thanks.

I don't completely agree with this. I have built a few environments with only 2 servers in the Front End pool (despite recommending that three be deployed)
    1. Anyway in the event that one FE fails, users are temporarily disconnected and then the client will re-sign them in to the second server.
    2. Two servers is supported, but not recommended. See this link (it also contains how to handle two servers - scroll to bottom) http://technet.microsoft.com/en-ca/library/gg412996.aspx.
The biggest issue with only having two servers is losing quorum. If both servers are shutdown at the same time, you can run into issues starting them back up. (it is recoverable by resetting the fabric/quorum, but it's a pain)

  • Is Lync 2013 perfectly compatible with Office 2010?

Microsoft Office 2010 and Lync 2013 are two diferrent instances, but they use some common elements.
In our company we have over a hundred MS Office 2010 licences and we dont need/afford to change them all to 2013. Now we want to install Lync 2013 and I wonder if there could be compatibility issues or, if Lync 2013 can modifiy the common files they use,
so that certain functions in Office 2010 will not be available or not work properly.
Is there a risk of this happening or they can work together "in complete harmony"? This is very important to me and I cannot afford to make a mistake. I would appreciate any help. Thank you.

    Hi Cristi,
Checkout these Lyncs on compatibility and interoperability:
    Lync 2013 Compatibility http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg412817.aspx
    Client Interoperability http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj204672.aspx
As far as having Lync 2013 & Office 2010 on the same PC, largely it SHOULD be ok and I've not had many issues. The exception to this was on a recent Citrix deployment, where for some reason running Lync 2013 was causing the Office 2010 instance to rerun
everytime it was started. All desktops were ok though.
My suggestion is to make sure you thoroughly test with every scenario that you can think of before rolling out to the masses.

  • Lync 2013 sign in problem

well i did setup everything from scratch according to the microsoft free eblook about lync 2013
and i joined a win 8.1 pc to my domain
when i try to login it ask me for password but when i enter it it says that
    cant sign in to lync
you didnt get signed in .it might be your sign-in address or logon credentials, so try those again. if that doesnt work, contact your support team
im desperate guys , plz help me

    Hi AliReza Baensaf,
You can follow the steps below to troubleshoot the issue.
    1. Please check whether or not all the Lync services are running.
    2. Make sure the required DNS records are set up.
DNS requirements for Front End pool in Lync Server 2013
DNS requirements for automatic client sign-in in Lync Server 2013
    3. Please try manual configuration to test the issue.
    4. You can enable Lync client logging and use snooper to analyze it.
    5. Install the updates for both Lync server and Lync client.
    Best regards,

  • Lync 2013 Clients, video applied bandwidth limit source

We have a single Lync 2013 Std server and single Lync 2013 Std edge server.
Clients are Lync 2013 with latest Office updates.
Clients connected via 1Gbps switch ports to each other and the Lync server, all on the same subnet.
Video calls between clients are having a low bandwidth limit applied to them, usually
    Applied bandwidth limit: 350 Kbps
    Applied bandwidth source: PreferenceValue
This of course limits the video quality, often to 480x240 15FPS.
Clients are Core i7, 2 cores (4 threads), support H264 acceleration (Intel HD Video 4000) and have WinRSAT Video Encode Score of 7.4
CSMediaConfiguration has MaxVideoRateAllowed set to Hd720p15M, CSConferencingPolicy has VideoRateKb set to 50000
What is the "preference value" and where is it coming from?

    Hi,
AppliedBandwidthLimit - This is the actual bandwidth applied to the given send side stream given various policy settings (TURN, API, SDP, Policy Server, and so on). This is not to be confused with the effective bandwidth because there can be a lower effective
bandwidth based on the bandwidth estimate. This is basically the maximum bandwidth the send stream can take barring limits imposed by the bandwidth estimate.

  • Migrating Lync 2010 Std to Lync 2103 Std- Move PSTN Gateway and Trusted Applications

We had a Lync 2010 Std server in one site and pool and migrated to Lync 2013 Std by creating another site and pool.  Same SIP domain, etc.  Everything is working so far that we have tested.
My question is now is there a way to just move the PSTN gateway and trunk that shows in the shared components of the Lync 2010 site to the Lync 2013 site?

    Hi,
You can create PSTN geteway for Lync 2013. As Holger said, you cannot movei it.
