Reply not quoting text of original message

For the past couple weeks, I have had an increasing number of messages where when I hit reply, the text of the message is not included. Same with forward. These messages always include attachments. All that gets included in the reply or forward is the attachment. Ideas?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

unfortunatley, I am having the very same problem on my power mac g5, but not on my mac book.
even before i installed hte new safari, every time i would hit reply or forward, only the original message would be included, not the most previous response. in preferences, i have checked " include all of the original text" but this doesnt help.
i then went ahead and installed the newer safari, 3.0.2 beta, based on the feedback from this board that the issue was specific to the 3.0.1 safari install. anyway, nothing has changed, still have the same issues.
the only was i can get this to include ALL of the original text is by hilighting the entire text content within the email. but this is a pain to do when responding to each and every email
any ides?????

  • Why is the text of original message sometimes not showing up?

I only notice this occasionally, I have my prefs set for quoting text. But sometimes it seems to include only a small part of the original text when replying, I haven't figured out what the difference might be. It's not HTML mail either.
    Thanks for any help.

    Rklahn,
That's actually the way it's meant to work.
If you only want to quote part of the message you are replying to, you select a portion of it.
If you want to quote the entire original, you don't select anything in the message.
    Does that make sense?

  • Reply with quoted text - won't allow me to embed comments in quoted text

I want to reply but put my comments within the quoted email message. I have done this a lot, but just this evening on any email, when I try to embed a comment into the quoted text, up comes a lined box with an x in the upper left corner. Mail seems to be making the quoted text into an image. This used to work, even earlier today. Where did this behavior change come from and how do I change it back to the way it used to be? Thanks

I have exactly the same problem. I see several people have brought it up in this forum but no one has answered. What is the solution? When this happens I can't reply properly to a message. It seems to happen at random.
    Please help!!!

  • Getting rid of code when replying in Mail and closing original message

When replying to an e-mail, the To/From/Subject lines get expanded with several lines of code. Is there a way to prevent this?
Also, is there a preference that tells the original message to close upon reply?

Thanks V.K. I read your previous post, and that's where I learned about deleting in the previous recipients list. The only thing I sync with is my iPod Touch, but I haven't done that since deleting the addresses. If I do as you suggest, won't I lose all my mail and address book information?
no, that would only clear the previous recipients list. it won't touch the address book. but if you got it fixed then you don't need to do that.
That would be worse than having to deal with the wrong address situation. Also, when I deleted the addresses, I used the keyboard delete key. I think that's the problem, as I went back and deleted something using the "delete" button on the recipients list page instead, and it worked the way it's supposed to.

  • I cleared some messages and noe I am not getting texts and the messages i do get are disappearing. How do I fix this?

i cleared some messages earlier today, and now my phone is only letting me preview them. After I read one they disappear. How do I fix this?

Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

  • Is there any way to inculde original messages NOT as an attachement?

Below, Mr.Toynton inquired about this problem over a year ago with no response. This probelm has always been bothersome, but after being informed by one of my clients, that once an email thread is estsblished, all of the responses she recieves from me are enclosed in an attahcment with wonky formatting, this problem has become extremely troublesome. Does anybody have a suggestion of getting around this "attachment" issue when using .mac webmail?
    thanks,
    Christian
"When using the .mac webmail client (on any platform), I find it difficult to reply to emails when the original message is stored as an attachment, as you cannot see the text that you are replying to!
When using the Mail application on my Powerbook this is not an issue.
I'd like to know if anybody knows about any plans to change this functionality or a workaround? I access my email using webmail more often than the apple Mail client hence it is important to me.
    Best regards
    Jonathan Toynton"

Since this seems to be more a .mac issue than an OS X issue, you should re-post it in the .Mac Email on the Web Forum. You'd probably get a better response.

  • When using firefox beta can not enter text into reply areas on forums.

When visiting vbulletin type sites, the firefox beta will not enter text into the message reply text box. Seems to be only a problem on honeycomb os.

This sounds like a known bug in Firefox 4: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=624163
We have a fix ready for this bug. The fix will be included in an upcoming version of Firefox. If you want to help us test the fix today, you can download a pre-release version from the "Aurora" channel here: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Mobile/Platforms/Android#Download_Aurora

  • When I reply to or forward emails using Horde webmail, the original email is not 'quoted' consistently.

This started happening about 7-10 days ago. I use Horde to get mail online. Suddenly, when I would hit reply or forward the original email would not be quoted. I had changed nothing in any of my preferences.
Since then, it has been spotty and intermittent. Sometimes, reply is fine; other times, nothing. Sometimes, reply will not even paste in the person's email or the subject line. Same with forward. Sometimes, it is fine. Mostly, it is not. There are three settings for forward: entire message, Body Text and Body Text with attachment. The original message will often be quoted using Body Text or Body Text with attachment, but not Entire Message. However, at least 50% of the time it will not come up using anything. I had my ISP check this since it seemed to be synchronous with a PHP upgrade they applied to the server. However, the tech could find nothing and there seemed to be no problem using Chrome.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

This is an extremely weird issue! I would suggest safe mode.
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
''When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.''
    Thank you.

  • Mail won't let me respond quoting the text of the original message

Mail does not allow me to respond to an email quoting the original message.
I tried going to preferences>composing and selecting "quote the text of the original message." under responding. But Mail doesn't allow me to select this option.
I've also tried selecting the text in the email that I want to respond to in my reply message and that doesn't show up when I hit reply.
Has anyone else encountered this problem?

I think I've discovered what was causing my problem. In the "Preferences, Composing" section, there's a pair of radio buttons for "When quoting text in replies or forwards". Mine was set to "Include selected text if any, otherwise include all", which means that if you have any text selected, only that text is included. It would appear that I was often selecting text while browsing through.
Setting the other radio button ("Include all of the original message") makes the behaviour go away.
I suspect that this may not be the only problem in this thread, but the fix worked for me!

  • HOW TO edit original message text in a Reply email

    Hello All!
We have an Application over several countries in which our Field Technicians must answer emails (reply) informing field ocurrences in order to update our central database in a (quite) "real-time" basis.
The problem is that, to do it, they need to edit the original message text (field parsing info), typing info, changing original message text. But we can't!
How can we do it? For now it's only posible to type new info in the "email answering area", not in the original message area.
This Application is working well since 2 years ago in Smartphones running Windows Mobile (Motorola).
Now we bought 20 new Blackberry Curve 8520 and we are in troubles to use them well.
    Can somebody help us?

    Hi,
you need find that screen and change that text. It will be modification of SAP so you will have to request for access key. It should be screen 400 in function group SUU5. There is a text element INFO_CASESENSITIVE_PWD.

  • Replying does not show original message

After upgrading to Safari 4 (final release not beta), I started to notice that when replying an email the original message would not always show. I have selected all the correct settings in preferences. Does anyone have a suggestion?. As a side note, when I tested the Safari 4 beta, I had to go back to Safari 3 because some rules in Mail stopped working.

The only emails that I've noticed the problem with are from a Mac user who uses the Mac Entourage.
    User-Agent: Microsoft-Entourage/12.10.0.080409
I have emails from other users that show:
    Content-type: text/plain; charset="ISO-8859-1"
and when replying or forwarding those emails, all the text from the original appear in the new email.
I only noticed this problem after upgrading from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8. I also upgraded Safari from v3.x to v4.0.3. I noticed in another thread someone mentioned that they had problems with some rules in Mail when running Safari v4 beta and they went back to v3 and the problems went away.

  • Original message not included in reply

I am using Microsoft Outlook:Mac 2011 and recently when I reply the original message is not included. This does not happen all the time and does not happen if you right click the message and then click reply. I note this was an issue some time back (2007/8) with Safari 3.0 but cannot find any more references to this problem. Does anyone else have a similar problem and have a fix?

I'm actually glad you posted this -- thank you OP. Recently, my replies and forwards STOPPED including the original message as well, 100% inexplicably. I right-clicked one message, chose Reply, and now the Reply and Forward buttons are functioning properly again. You never know when just asking a question will help another user out!

  • Text appears in the middle of the original message when replying

Has anyone had this problem? When replying to an email the reply message text appears right in the middle of the detail header of the original message. Here is an example:
    Original Message:
    From: Jane Doe
"Yes 2PM at Market Place works for me."
    To: Tawnbi
    Sent on xx/xx/2007, Friday, etc.
Hey! How about 2PM tomorrow at Market Place?
Okay. The text "Yes 2PM at Market Place works for me" was the reply. Why didn't it appear above the detail header to the original message? The rep at Apple Store in Chicago said he's only had one other customer with this problem. The email is being accessed through Outlook Web Access. Has anyone had this problem? If so, found a solution?

That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the Operating System data on the hard drive is somehow corrupted.
Put your install DVD into the optical drive and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Just press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

  • Remove original message when replying in mail

I don't want to include the text of messages received when I reply to them. Mail help says to adjust this you
    1. Choose Mail > Preferences and click Composing.
    2. Select the "Quote the text of the original message" checkbox.
    3. Select "Include selected text if any, otherwise include all."
my problem is that when I go to Mail > Preferences there is no Composing option to click.

In Tiger, when you go to Mail Preferences, there is a gray oval in the upper right hand corner of the Preferences window. When you click on it, it should reveal these other icons: General... Accounts... RSS... Junk Mail... Fonts & Colors... Viewing... Composing... Rules, if they are not currently visible.
In Leopard, when you go to Mail Preferences, if these other icons are not visible to you, go under View on the menubar and select "Show Toolbar"

  • Can't forward original message or reply

when i receive an email and want to forward I only get a window popup which I never got. This window doesn't have the send or forward toolbar command.
I believe I accidently changed some format but don't know how to fix it.

I have no idea what popup you talk about. When you hit reply you should get a write window open with either the original message quoted or not depending on how you have your account settings set.
