Cursor disappears in Word 2004/2008 with white on black text

When I turn on white text on black background, and open a document in Word 2004 or 2008 (or text entry field, in, e.g., Firefox**), when the pointer changes from an arrow to an "I-bar" shape, it disappears. If I toggle back to black text on white background, poof -- there it is. I talked to Apple support and they were able to reproduce the problem, but said it's with Word. I talked to Microsoft support, and they said it's an Apple problem. I don't care; I just need a way to fix it, because using Word is difficult w/o a pointer, and I need to use Word. Anyone have any ideas? I do NOT see a problem with, e.g., Mail.app, where the cursoer also changes to an I-bar at times, but remains visible even in high contrast mode. Note also that this probem does not occur using Word for Windows using Windows high contrast mode (which, however, really is primative compared to OS X's mode).
**Re Firefox example: I'm filling out this form right now, and although the insertion point is visible (the vertical bar where text is entered), the pointer (the arrow that changes to an I-bar when it's inside this text-entry box) is not. All I need to do to make it visible -- as in Word -- is hit Ctrl-Cmd-Opt-8 to toggle the text to black on white, and there it is.

Thanks for the suggestions.
1. White on blue is a partial solution. It's actually still a little glarey for me (I have an eye problem), and, of course, when I switch from Word to another program, I have to toggle back into white on black for the other program, so I can see it.
2. I thought of Pages, too. It works fine, except that I need to exchage documents with PC users, who use Word. For some reason Pages displays line and page breaks in different places than does Word, which is a problem when moving docs back and forth. (Apple support told me that Pages renders fonts and line spacing differently from Word, and there's no way to make text look the same in both programs.) Thats a deal-killer, because the folks I work with and I need to see page layouts exactly the same. TextEdit doesn't have the features I need.
3. As to other programs: It also happens all other Office apps, in Mozilla Thunderbird, and with Palm Desktop for the Mac. It does NOT occur, oddly, in NeoOffice. I initially thought that the re-write of Word from 2004 to Universal Binary in 2008 would fix the problem, but it didn't. Maybe other folks who are listening (reading) in can try it on some third party programs. I don't have or use anything else that I can think of.

  • Importing word 2004 docs with tables into Pages

I work in video production, and my clients send me shooting scrips as word documents formatted with tables. Needless to say, I was quick to discover that Pages doesn't really 'like' these documents. I can't keep asking my clients to reformat their docs as txt files for me - it's very unprofessional.
What I've found is that all the text is there, but the tables don't 'translate' (one cell tries to fit on a whole page and the text gets 'lost' at the bottom). Is there a quick and easy way to remove the tables in Pages but keep the text?
    In Word, it's Alt+A, V, B, 0 (I've been formatting and reformatting scripts for 8 years!).
Thanks for your help. I REALLY don't want to have to get Office - I've read so many horror stories about 2008 (especially the excel part).

    Hello,
Have you tried: Select table, then from the Pages Menu; Format > Table > Convert Table to Text?
It might be of some value in this situation.

  • Start an adjustment with Whites and Blacks?

Martin Evening in CS6 for Photographers recommends adjusting an image using Exposure, Contrast, then fine tune with Highlights and Shadow. Says use Whites and Blacks only if necessary. Julieanne Kost has a pithy video on ACR in which she starts by setting Whites and Blacks (which harkens back to Bruce Fraser/Real World Photoshop advice using Levels in Photoshop). http://tv.adobe.com/watch/photoshop-cs6-featuretour/adobe-camera-raw-70-in-photoshop-cs6/
I know I can see what works best for an image, etc. Wondering what is the recommended procedure.

    Hi bmad,
I too would love to see a thorough treatise on the new basic sliders, with full disclosure of image adaptive behavior.
But, my guess: Adobe will leave that to 3rd parties, who may or may not ever tackle such an undertaking, with the kind of detail that would please the most curious users.
Anyway, there was a fair amount of back & forth about this in the beta forums way back when.
Eric Chan who implemented the software, was in the camp of:
    * Set exposure 1st
    * The rest in the order presented.
    * Blacks & whites last as more of a fine-tuning of clipping points.
But, I came to accept fairly quickly that leaving blacks & whites til the end was not always going to work for me.
I regularly end up with blacks between -20 and -50, or more.
And, it's not too unusual for me to end up with +whites up to 40, or more...
    Likewise, I've had a few photos with +blacks=100 & -whites = 100.
Those kinds of settings can not wait til the end as fine tuning!
Anyway, part of this depends on personal tastes.
+whites is a lot like +exposure, except it pulls harder on the upper most end. Exposure reaches further into the midtones and shadows.
So if you like your shadows and midtones bright, and highlights not as bright, then you may prefer +exposure over +whites.
In a way, +whites is kinda like:
    +exposure +contrast -highlights
So, it's possible that two people can end up with similar pictures, even though they started with different sliders...
Personally, I often adjust exposure & whites simultaneously: almost think of them as a related pair. But, that only works for the more normal photos.
When large -whites values will be needed for taming the highlights, (and often +blacks complements it in that case) then the whole game changes...
I have my speculation about how the design / implementation of PV2012 came about, but I'm probably wrong, and for all practical purposes - it doesn't matter anyway.
Truth betold, the end result only depends on the final values of the sliders, not how you got there.
I think the biggest thing that people who've done their time on the learning curve want to depart on those less traveled in the PV2012 journey is:
Don't bring PV2010 thinking (or other less image-adaptive technologies) into PV2012, or it's a recipe for frustration.
e.g. Some people look at a photo and think: gee, the highlights seem bright enough already, so I think I'll try and boost the bottom up treating shadows slider like Lr3 fill light slider. Those people fairly quickly get on the forum and start screaming about how PV2012 doesn't work very well, and they want Lr3 fill back, when what they need to do is +exposure +shadows -highlights instead.
So if you always keep in mind that exposure (perhaps in conjunction with whites) is the primary means for setting overall image brightness, and shadows & highlights sliders balance around it, you'll probably be OK regardless of where you start.
    Pop-quiz:
Suppose the picture looks almost perfect as is, except the highlights are too bright. What is the best thing to do?:
    A. -highlights
    B. -exposure -highlights +shadows
    Answer: Usually B
Why? Because -highlights = +shadows is a sweet spot in PV2012, and the -exposure +shadows will keep the bottom end the same, and drop highlight brightness too, so less -highlights is needed for bringing the highlights down: Net effect: about the same, except you keep PV2012 in it's sweet spot.
In my opinion, contrast should usually be put in the ballpark early on after exposure, but fine-tuning contrast can wait til exposure/whites & blacks are more solid. It's not unusal for me to have highlights & shadows be the very last sliders tweaked.
I think one of the reasons contrast slider is up top near exposure in the slider order is to steer people away from attempting to use highlights/shadows for contrast control. Contrast is more for midtone separation, and highlights/shadows as compensation for over/under brightness of highlights & shadows due to settings of exposure and contrast.
    PS - Don't forget to add a touch of clarity, if it's one of those kinds of pictures ;-}
    Cheers,
    Rob

  • White on black text knockout

I am having problems with some white text (converted to paths) which is placed on a black background.. When viewing the pdf in Illustrator (CS4), the text show up fine. When viewing in Acrobat (which the printers will print from), the white text has disappeared. This only applies to some of the text (EXECUTIVES ONLINE on attached pic.), the rest is fine.  Any ideas as to what is going wrong? Should I set the trapping to knock out the black? If so, how?
    many thanks.

    Slect the text
then go to the Attributes Panel and see if the white is set to overprint if it is then uncheck Overprint Fill as you want it to knock out.
Overprinting white on black will yeold black which you do not want.
So uncheck overprint for the text.

  • Cursor Disappears

Mac Pro running Mountain Lion & Photoshop CS5. Gotta say Mountain Lion seems to have its share of bugs. Here's one: Working away in Photoshop CS5, when I suddenly want to look at a web page, check email, etc. The cursor disappears the instant it leaves Photoshop and is invisible over the Finder, desktop, and all other apps. Only way to get it back is to Command+Tab thru the application switcher. Pathetic.

  • Iphone 6 plus screen flashing white and black

My iPhone 6 Plus 16Gb suddenly started to show screen artifacs, like flashing with white and black, so I can't see the springboard only black and white screen. Restart of the phone didn't help. Even when the phone is booting, Apple logo doesn't appear and then again flashes. As it seems on background everything is working, as I can receive sms and phone calls. It is just the screen. iPhobe 6 Plus is brand new, I've been using it for 1 week and it never dropped. No physical damage, no nothing, just flashing

Have you tried a Reset by holding down the Sleep / Wake Button and the Home Button at the same time until the white Apple logo appears, then let go of the buttons, but wait until the Reset completes and you are back at your lock-screen?  If this doesn't work then do you have a computer with the current version of iTunes?  If yes and you already have a Backup of your Media and Data on iCloud or iTunes, then you can put the iPhone in DFU Mode.  Don't do this unless you have a Backup and also have a computer with the latest iTunes.  You will need your Apple ID and Password.  To go to DFU Mode you can hold the Home button while you plug the Lightning Cable into the iPhone, a graphic will appear on the iPhone screen showing that you need to connect to iTunes.  At that point just connect the iPhone via the Lightning Cable with USB into your Computer.  Open the iTunes App on the Computer and wait until a button appears representing the connected iPhone.  Then click on the iPhone button on the iTunes screen and it should open to the Summary page.  At that point you can Restore the iPhone to Factory Settings and bring it up as A New Phone.  The iPhone should screen should then show Hello and you will need to connect to your WiFi via your Router WiFi Password and then answer all the question put forth by the iPhone.  When the "Lets Get Started" occurs you can thoroughly check out the iPhone to make sure it is all OK.  When satisfied that things are good, you can plug into the computer and iTunes and this time Restore from Backup.  or if you Backup is in iCloud you can Restore over the air.

  • Word 2011 for Mac Book pro - I have found that my cursor disappears sometimes when I click on a toolbar function. I found out it is a bug, that the Mac loses 'focus'. I can correct it temporarily by clicking on Format - Font - Cancel. Any info?

I have Word 2011 on a Mac Book Pro and have had problems with a dissapearing cursor - it makes editing tricky
After googling it I found out that there is a bug where the Mac loses focus if you click away from the document - it also does this with italics according to other users.
I had a play with it and found out that when I click on the toolbar in a document where this happens, the cursor disappears, e.g. changing font colour etc. And then, when I click on Format - Font - Cancel it returns
I'd be interested if anyone else has a comment to add, please do
    thanks

BTW (speaking as a Dad of 3 daughters in Grad school) if you don't already have and use a DropBox account, or some other similar online "cloud" based backup of your school documents, you should start doing so immediately. By keeping all of your important documents in the Dropbox folder on your computer, you have instant access to them from any other computer (or iPad), should you be w/o your computer while in for repairs (or if, God forbid, it is stolen). It's free for 2 GB of online storage, which is more than enough for a few years worth of Word documents, etc. (If you get other people to sign up via your email "invitation", then Dropbox gives you even more free storage space.) Every time you close a document, it is updated on the Dropbox servers (encrypted), if it is in the Dropbox folder (assuming you give it a few seconds to update before turning off your computer). Do a google search of "Cloud based storage comparisons" to compare the amount of free space each of the competing services give you.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions:
This is a common plaint discussed here and in the Install and Setup forum many times in many threads.
Some have gotten it to run, others updated to 2008, while others switched to NeoOffice or OpenOffice which work nearly flawlessly with Leopard and are free.
If you search these forums for "Microsoft Word 2004" you will find a plethora of information, some of which may be helpful.
Typically I think you have to do a complete uninstall and reinstall and be sure you have the very latest patches from MS.

  • New MBP, and am having memory trouble errors with MS Word 2004

    Hi,
I know this has been talked about before, but I'm not sure where to post this question. I have a new MBP, with a full version of Word (no previous trial software installed). I have been trying to copy and past basic text files from Yahoo mail, to create a book of emails of sorts. My file size has been approaching my memory capacity (basic setup). Does it not create a swap file and let you keep going if you approach the limits of the onboard memory? I understand it will run a bit slower, but I'm only moving text files and nothing else. Why the proverbial memory/disk full error messages? Does it have anything to do with the software being non universal code?
Do I need to get rid of temporary files, as Im copying and pasting alot? If so, how?
Anyone have the same trouble, and have a clear solution? I could also swear my MPB is running alot slower with Word than I would have expected.
Any help you can give me would b appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dave

I’ll try to answer your questions briefly without going into too much detail. First of all, I think the error message you are seeing is generated by MS Word and not your operating system. That particular error, and other similar ones, are quite common in Word in particular situations and are the result of a known bug.
As far as I know, there is no fix, but there are several work-arounds. The bug has to do with the number of temporary files that get created when working with large Word files. As you might guess, the larger your file, the larger the temp files, and they will quickly fill up your existing RAM, which then causes the error that generates the message. You have to delete the temp files---you can do that by saving and closing your file, then restart it. There are some scripts you can run, but that is beyond what I want to get into here (and usually is not necessary).
The other problem is that by copying and pasting text from Yahoo Mail, you are not pasting simple text---you are pasting all the HTML code, formatting, and everything else that is contained in that text. And Word saves it all, then adds its own formatting and other code---leading to corrupt files sooner or later.
And then, to make it all worse, if your file is as large as you say it is (close to system memory in size), that is one huge Word file, and Word does not handle really large files very well, especially Word 2004, but all versions of Word, Windows versions included, have trouble with large files.
Word does in fact run slowly on even the newest MacBook Pros because Word is not yet compiled for the Intel Macs and does not run natively as a universal binary but runs under Rosetta, which translates Word to run on Apple computers running Intel CPUs. If you are working with small files, it isn’t too bad, but big files will slow it down to almost a crawl at times, or it will even stop responding for several seconds between each command.
You can work around these problems by breaking your file into much smaller ones, save often (and close the file once in while), and save as a text file, rather than as a doc file.
An alternative is to use another word processor or text editor to save your copied text---there are many that will work as well as or better than Word for what you want to do. Pages is a good alternative----I have to collaborate on Word files every day, and I prefer to work on my MacBook Pro (although I also use Windows-based computers about as frequently, too), and except for the most complex Word files with tables, charts, and pictures, Pages works very well, and you can save the file as a Word document, too, if you need to.
Hope that answers some of your questions----and always remember….I could be wrong.
