Custom NFS share point directory showing up on all network machines

Hi,
I'm in the process of migrating our 10.4 PowerMac server to a Mac Pro (running 10.5). I've been trying to recreate our 10.4 server setup as much as possible and so far I've only come across one annoying issue.
We have fink installed on the server and under our 10.4 setup the /sw directory was set up as an NFS automounted share point with a custom mount point of '/sw'. I.e. users logging into client machines saw a /sw directory and could work with that. This made it easier to add fink packages as I only needed to do this on one machine (the server). This setup worked very well under 10.4 and had been working stably for the last couple of years.
As we now have (for another month or two at least) a mix of intel and Power PC machines, I don't want to share out the (intel) server version of fink to all clients. In Server Admin, I have chosen to set the NFS protocol options to specify the IP address of just one client (an intel machine). I am only using NFS to share this directory. The plan is to add more client IP addresses as we get more intel machines.
This works for the one intel client machine. Logging in via the GUI or via ssh allows you to run programs located under the /sw directory. The problem is that a phantom /sw directory appears on all client machines, even though their IP addresses are not specified in Server Admin. The /sw directory has root/wheel permissions (for user/group) and attempting to list its contents returns 'Operation not permitted' (even with 'sudo ls /sw').
If I use Directory Utility to remove the connection to the Directory server on our main server, then the /sw directory becomes owned by root/admin and I can remove it (it appears empty). Reconnecting to the Directory Server changes the permissions back to root/wheel. It is also worth noting that when I first installed fink on the server (in /sw) the act of making this a share point also changed the permissions on /sw to root/wheel meaning that I couldn't access the fink programs that I had only just installed (this forced me to reinstall fink in /Volumes/Data/fink).
Has anyone else noticed this behavior? It almost seems like Server Admin is not honoring the list of IP addresses that are being listed as targets for client machines. I had planned to install fink locally on the PowerPC clients until we upgrade them to intel machines. However, I would then also have to install fink somewhere other than /sw as I can't write to that directory. I would presume that this behavior should happen on any NFS share point that is trying to automount to a custom mount point on a client. Can anyone else verify this?
Regards,
Keith

As a footnote. I have now removed my shared fink installation. It is no longer listed as an NFS sharepoint in Server Admin and running the 'showmount -e' command does not list it. However, a /sw directory is still being created on the server and on the client machines on our network.
This is perplexing and frustrating. There is no sharepoint any more. I rebooted the server but it makes no difference. I removed the /sw directory (on the server) by booting the machine in target firewire mode and removing it by using a 2nd machine. But following the restart, it appeared again.
This suggests that once you make any custom mountpoint (using NFS sharing) then you will forever be stuck with a directory at the root level of all your clients which you can not remove.

  • Automount Share points not showing up?

So I've got a Share point named 'Documents', 'Enable automount' is check and it has a custom path of '/Network/Documents'. (BTW, is the appropriate place for that?)
When I log in as a user I can see that the directory '/Network/Documents' is being created (by clicking on 'All...' in the finder sidebar), but nothing useful is happening with it... double-clicking on it takes me into the folder about 0.5 to 1 second then "redirects" me back to the 'Network' folder.
I don't get usable icons (on the desktop) for the 'Documents' share until I go Shared > MyServer > Documents ... only then do I see the share point in any sort of usable state.
Am I missing something? I assumed that making something automount would place it on the desktop or the sidebar or something when the user logs in.

+I assumed that making something automount would place it on the desktop or the sidebar or something when the user logs in.+
No. An automount only works if your server is configured to host a shared LDAP domain (OD Master) and the client is bound to that domain (so that it can read the mount record).
With that said, there are two types of automounts available via AFP:
*A Dynamic Automount*, which is typically used for the home directory share point(s). Dynamic mounts "eject" and remount as the user who is logging in at login time. The mount path is configured automatically in /Network/Servers.
For example, a share point configured to automount (located at /Volumes/Data/Homes on the server with name myserver.myco.lan) will dynamically automount at this path on the client:
    /Network/Servers/myserver.myco.lan/Volumes/Data/Homes
*A Static Automount*, which is typically used for sharing common files; a shared Library is an example. Static automounts mount at /Network/mountname, and are done at startup time. Generally speaking, these will only work if one of the following is true:
    1. AFP Guest access is on for the share point being statically automounted. (Make sure that AFP guest access is on for the AFP service and on for the share point. Disable it for any other share points that don't need AFP guest access.) In this case, the automount will be mounted as the AFP guest user, not the currently logged-in or connected user.
    2. The client system is bound to an Open Directory Master via directory binding, and Kerberos is working properly on the master. In this case, the static automount will mount as the logged-in user.
If you just want to make a share point mount automatically at login time, consider adding the AFP share point's URL to the user's login items instead of creating an automount. This will mount the share point in the "classic" manner, where it appears in the Computer window and on the Desktop.
To do so, you can manage the login items (loginwindow.plist or com.apple.loginitems.plist) for the user or group via Workgroup Manager. Open TextEdit (for example), and type the URL for connecting to the share point - afp://myserver.myco.lan/stuff, for example - and drag that text onto the Desktop to create an AFP Internet Location file. Then drag that file into the login items section of Workgroup Manager to add it.
If your server has Kerberos running, you're set. When a client logs in, he/she gets a Kerberos TGT from the KDC and a service ticket for AFP which mounts the share point; no name and password to re-enter. If not, you can check the "connect with user's name and password" box in the login items section of Workgroup Manager to have login window hold the user's name and password temporarily and enter it for him/her.
Also note that Leopard clients don't automatically show mounted share points on the Desktop (but they do appear in the Computer window of the Finder and in the SHARED section of the sidebar). If you'd prefer to have users see shares on the Desktop again, you can manage that via Workgroup Manager's Finder preferences section.
    Hope this helps!

  • Bonjour published NFS shares do not show in Finder

In Mac OSX 10.4, Finder did properly discover NFS, AFP and SMB bonjour published services. In 10.5 it seems only AFP published shares show up.
I used avahi for Linux and nfs.tcp as service type. This configuration worked fine in Tiger.
Does anybody know of any Finder.plist setting or something else that should enable finder to discover NFS shares again?
For the mean time (since I consider it a real bug) I wrote my own Ruby script daemon using DNSSD to look up all bonjour published NFS services and the mount them.
I can publish this script here if anybody is interested. It actually uses the new Ruby DNSSD package of Leopard.

I assume this is the option that you are having the issue with.

  • How to PREVENT NFS shares showing on clients?

Folks: Can someone clue me in as to how it is that our server's NFS shares are showing up automatically on Mac clients (under Network..) -- and how to prevent that from happening?
For various reasons of idiosyncratic mix of machines, OSes etc, our server has SMB shares set up for Windows and Mac clients which work just fine, plus some NFS shares for linux and particularly for ancient SGI. We don't want Macs interacting with the server via NFS, yet those shares show up consistently on the clients, and confuse the heck out of users.
How do set the Mac clients to not ever do anything NFS? (On the server I could limit NFS exports' to specific IP addresses, but that's a moving target and likely to cause more grief than help...).
    Thanks,
    Graham
Many   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Many

Jeff: We absolutely do NOT want the Mac users to be using NFS at all for anything. If we get involved in that game then we have to manage assignment of UIDs and GIDs for Mac users, which then impacts on the UIDs and GIDs that they use within their own Mac file systems and things go downhill from there. As it stands, the Mac users apparently have some default UID/GID which happens not to correspond to a UID/GID with privileges beyond RO, hence they can see but can't edit (thank goodness) dirs and files that they think they should be able to. We haven't even investigated whether those default UID/GIDs are even consistent across Macs (which of course is a problem in its own right), or what. Anyhow, it's big hairball that's totally unnecessary and useless.
It appears to me that some apparatus in the Mac is gratuitously detecting, mounting (or automounting) the NFS shares that can be detected on the network. If I could just turn that off, I think we'd be where we want to be. I guess turning off the entire NFS protocol for Macs might be a separate way to go.
Must admit, I'm getting closer to doing this "right" -- limiting NFS access in the server exports to specific client IPs.. but that's going to be a mess also.

  • FTP - Share Points Disapearing

On our server I've setup FTP access to certain groups. One being a public group - only access to one directory (public ftp) and another group which has access to all share points. Permissions are set using ACLs for both groups to their respective directories.
So now when a user logs in that has access to all share points, we don't see all the share points anymore we only see the public share point. If I turn off FTP as a protocol for all the share points - all the aliases show up. Turn on the protocol they disappear.
    Any ideas insight?

Ok, solved. It was simply a permissions issue with the symbolic links. I assumed that since the server automatically generated these when you turn on FTP sharing that it would grant read access for everyone.
Well I was mistaken - had to update the permissions on the links to allow everyone read access. They now show up and users can browse the directories that they have permission to.

  • Tiger client can not mount the chinese named share point

We have a Snow Leopard Server running AFP with some share points.

  • AFP Share Points disappearing

This has been an ongoing problem, I don't remember it happening in 10.3.x but since upgrading to 10.4.x it has been a constant issue. the server is an open directory master bound with AD. The users login to the server using an AD account. After no specific period of time some (but not all) share points will show zero items. If the share point is ejected it will not show up in the list of available shares for 5 - 45 minutes. It will then become available again. This effects random users, sometimes a few times a day, sometimes once a week.
I have taken some users and given them local accounts and not seen the issue.
I assume this means that it is something to do with the passing of the authentication to and from the AD server.
If anyone else has seen this and knows how to correct it please let me know.
    Thanks

I am having a similar issue with brand new Mac Mini server. I have established sharepoints on a number of folders. When I connect to them from a client, the drives mounts as remains present for up to 2 minutes and then disappears with an error message about it being no longer available.
There seems to be no pattern to this. At first I thought it was an issue related to user accounts or similarly named resources on server and/or client, some permissions issue I was unaware of but no matter what I try the problem remains.
I was considering re-installing OS X Server to attempt to rectify.

  • Workgroup Manager won't show available volumes/folders to setup share point

Server 10.4.11: open Workgroup Manager and select the Sharing panel.
Clicking the "Share Points" tab displays my current share points as expected.
But clicking the "All" tab shows a +completely blank window+: no volumes or folders at all!
(The button at the bottom to mount or unmount a remote NFS volume appears, but I've never used it and I don't know what good it might be.)
Accessing the server with the 10.5 version of Workgroup Manger from a Leopard client gives the same behavior.

Never mind. Rebooted the machine and it's back to normal. Go figure.

    Thanking You
    Arun

    Arun,
If you plan to implement the "Querying the Active Directory" based on my code snippet,
and if you do not have permission [your account must be the part of domain admin] to do so,
Then still you can do it in least effort through code,
string usersInXml = SPContext.Current.Web.AllUsers.Xml;your xml string look like this.
    <Users><User ID="2" Sid="" Name="Administrator"
    LoginName="i:0#.w|murugesan\administrator" Email="" Notes="" IsSiteAdmin="True" IsDomainGroup="False" Flags="0" /><User ID="1" Sid="" Name="Murugesa Pandian" LoginName="i:0#.w|murugesan\murugesan" Email="" Notes="" IsSiteAdmin="True" IsDomainGroup="False" Flags="0" /><User ID="1073741823" Sid="S-1-0-0" Name="System Account" LoginName="SHAREPOINT\system" Email="" Notes="" IsSiteAdmin="False" IsDomainGroup="False" Flags="0" /></Users>
You can user Linq to XML to filter the "LoginName,Name and Email and then populate your drop down list.
    * User must be logged into the site at least once.

  • Folders Not Showing in Server Admin AFP Share Point?

    Hello all,
My problem is I can make a folder in Server Admin under AFP Share Point, But the Folder wont actually be made on the HD.
Under Server Admin AFP Share Point it will tell me that it doesn't exist?
So I thought I'll go to that point on the HD and make the folder then set the permissions to it... nope I can make the folder I can see it in finder and in terminal, But not in Server Admin AFP Share Point.
I have never seen this before any help is greatly welcomed.

    Hi Kristoffer,
I have seen an attribute for folder object which could control SharePoint folder hide or show in webdav explorer view, you can use PowerShell to output the problematic folder property, see if it the case, then use the PowerShell code to set it's property
with blank value to make it show in explorer view,
Use the PowerShell to get the folder object and then check the property value with this code line $folder.Properties["vti_winfileattribs"]
#folder can be site, library level and folder level
    $folder = (Get-SPWeb http://sp).Folders["shared documents"].SubFolders["folder1"]

We run an XServe G5, and we've recently had a problem with Linux clients connecting up to the share points on the server and not being able to see recently moved files in linux.
Any suggestions or assistance would be welcome.

FAM is a daemon donated from SGI to help clients monitor changes on NFS mounted file systems and not overload the server. It was ported about 5 years ago. I was wondering, if it was running on the Linux boxes if it would be looked at, or if it was UDP, maybe because OSX doesn't have it, the updates/notifications weren't being made.
If that were the case, maybe some extra options would be needed in the Linux boxes /etc/fstab.
