Cyrillic string conversion question

Hello,
First time here...
I would like to know if there is a way to convert a text string from cyrillic to latin. Should I use a function?
Edited by: user12099545 on 2009-10-22 5:38

I have insufficient privileges to create the function so I'm going to look for someone else to create it so that I can use it. I've added additional letters and now it looks like this:
CREATE FUNCTION cyrillic_to_latin_spelling(p_cyrillic VARCHAR2)
RETURN VARCHAR2 IS
TYPE v_spelling_type IS TABLE OF VARCHAR2(3) INDEX BY VARCHAR2(1);
v_spelling_tbl v_spelling_type;
v_str VARCHAR2(4000);
v_char VARCHAR2(1);
BEGIN
v_spelling_tbl(' ') := ' ';
v_spelling_tbl('А') := 'A';
v_spelling_tbl('Б') := 'B';
v_spelling_tbl('В') := 'V';
v_spelling_tbl('Г') := 'G';
v_spelling_tbl('Д') := 'D';
v_spelling_tbl('Е') := 'E';
v_spelling_tbl('Ж') := 'Z';
v_spelling_tbl('З') := 'Z';
v_spelling_tbl('И') := 'I';
v_spelling_tbl('Й') := 'I';
v_spelling_tbl('К') := 'K';
v_spelling_tbl('Л') := 'L';
v_spelling_tbl('М') := 'M';
v_spelling_tbl('Н') := 'N';
v_spelling_tbl('О') := 'O';
v_spelling_tbl('П') := 'P';
v_spelling_tbl('Р') := 'R';
v_spelling_tbl('С') := 'S';
v_spelling_tbl('Т') := 'T';
v_spelling_tbl('У') := 'U';
v_spelling_tbl('Ф') := 'F';
v_spelling_tbl('Х') := 'H';
v_spelling_tbl('Ц') := 'CH';
v_spelling_tbl('Ч') := 'CH';
v_spelling_tbl('Ш') := 'SH';
v_spelling_tbl('Щ') := 'SH';
v_spelling_tbl('Ъ') := 'A';
v_spelling_tbl('Ь') := '';
v_spelling_tbl('Ю') := 'IU';
v_spelling_tbl('Я') := 'YA';
FOR v_i IN 1 .. NVL(LENGTH(p_cyrillic), 0) LOOP
v_char := SUBSTR(p_cyrillic, v_i, 1);
v_str := v_str || v_spelling_tbl(v_char);
END LOOP;
RETURN v_str;
END

  • UPGRADE 1103 to 1159 - PAYMENTS CONVERSION QUESTION!

    Hello,
    UPGRADE 1103 to 1159 - PAYMENTS CONVERSION QUESTION!
    This is the scenario, we are planning to do. Currently we have 11.0.3 in one box. We are planning for re-implementation for 11.5.9 in the new box. So we
    have to convert approx 14 months of open and closed data for the historic purposes. (Like PO's, Invoices, Payments and ledger data etc.)
    Again, these conversions cannot be handled through the front end using some Data Loader kind of tool etc...
    Data Loader tool, I used a lot for loading Flexfield Value Set Values, Category Codes etc...
    But my question is converting these AP_PAYMENTS related data in the back end. (Like Check num, Payment Batch ID, Invoice Number, Invoice ID, Supplier Number,
    Supplier ID, etc.) from old 11.0.3 box to new 11i box.
    Since there was some confusion is going on with Payments related areas, because there was now API's etc... some of them are telling it is very difficult to migrate "AS IS" into 11i. I also heard that oracle won't support this.
    Just want to clarify clearly on this issues.
    Because we are moving from the small box of 11.0.3 into Big box for 11.5.9. So we don't want to loose all the histories for about 20 months. especially open
    Closed / Open - Invoices, Payments, PO's, REQ's, Active Items which are in the Open Blanket PO's, Employees, etc...
    Of all these everything sounds like doable because they do have API's etc... Of course, I belive there is no API for the Vendors only. We want to know is this true for the Payments also.
    Any urgent clarifications is very much appreciated with clear explanation.
    Thanks in advance
    Mani Varadan

    The payment conversion is little bit tricky in term on its understanding and functionality.
    There are lot of dependices of payments conversion on the others objects like invoice.
    You need to be very clear in requirements.
    Here is the extracted documents for giving you clear understanding about payments.
    Overview of Process
    Prior to creating a payment batch, four setup are required.
    A.Define a bank for bank branches with which you do business.
    B.Define bank accounts.
    C.Choose a predefined or custom payment format.
    D.Finally, define payment documents for disbursements for each bank account.
    To give an overview of the steps required to create payment batch payments:
    1) Initiate the payment batch by entering the criteria for invoices you want to pay. The payment batch process selects invoices, and then builds the payments. It determines which invoices will be paid on each payment document, and lists this information for you on the Preliminary Payment Register.
    2) Make any necessary modifications to your payment batch, such as selecting additional invoices, deselecting invoices, deselecting suppliers, etc. Once modifications are complete, the modify payment batch process automatically builds the payments if any invoices were added.
    3) Format payments to produce an output file.
    4) Print checks from the output file if you are not creating electronic payments or sending the output file to a third party for printing.
    5) Confirm the payment batch by recording the document numbers associated with each payment. During this step, the invoice status is updated to “Paid” and a document number is associated with the invoice and invoice payment.
    As conversion(from 11.0.3 to 11.5.9) is concern step 3,4 is excluded from the standard processes.
    These are the tables involved during the payment conversion.
    AP_SELECTED_INVOICES_ALL
    AP_INV_SELECTION_CRITERIA_ALL
    AP_INVOICES_ALL
    AP_PAYMENT_SCHEDULES_ALL
    These are background (concurrent) processes involved in batch process consists of the following
    a. Autoselect
    b. Build Payments
    c. Preliminary Payment Register
    d. Format
    e. Confirm
    f. Final Payment Register.
    10.7:
    If you are using the application in character mode, navigate to the Reset Payment Batch form. The navigation path is
    \Navigate --> Controls --> Payment --> ResetPaymentBatch.
    Select the payment batch name and the system displays the status of the batch. Your options for proceeding vary according to the batch status.
    11.5.8/9
    You can perform actions on your batch in Payment Batches form by clicking on the Actions button. The appropriate actions are highlighted depending on the status of the batch.
    THIS SECTION TALK ABOUT THE DETAIL TECHNICAL OVERVIEW
    Payment Conversion Technical Overview
    For the conversion is concern we are following four-step process
    I.Defined and prerequisite steps as discussed above
    II.Selecting the Invoice
    III.Building the Payment
    IV.Confirm
    THESE ARE THE PREREQUISITE SETUP
    We are assuming the bank set is already done from 10.7 to 11i.Bank set up means bank account id, and its corresponding payment format.
    For this purpose we are using mapping function for bank account id and on that basis we are getting corresponding checks stock id.This means defining a payment documents for disbursements
    SELECT INVOICES
    When a payment batch is started one row for each record is created in the
    AP_INV_SELECTION_CRITERIA_ALL table.
    This table stores the criteria that a payment batch uses to select invoices for payments. The module name for the Auto Select process is APXPBSEL. The Select Invoices, or AutoSelect, is the first step in the payment batch process.
    When we run a concurrent program the AutoSelect process starts by loading records that meet the invoice selection criteria into the table AP_SELECTED_INVOICES_ALL from the tables AP_INVOICES_ALL and AP_PAYMENT_SCHEDULES_ALL.
    The criteria that AutoSelect uses to determine which record to select from AP_INVOICES_ALL and AP_PAYMENT_SCHEDULES_ALL is stored in AP_INV_SELECTION_CRITERIA_ALL.
    To be sure that no duplicate invoices get selected, invoices that are already selected in another payment batch are not selected. Invoice payments that have no remaining payment amounts are not selected either.
    BUILD PAYMENTS
    The module name for the Build Program is APXPBBLD. From the list created by AutoSelect, the Build program determines which invoices will be paid on each
    Payment document, and lists this information on the Preliminary Payment Register if Selected. The Build program is spawned when AutoSelect has completed. When the Build Program starts, the application uses information from the table AP_SELECTED_INVOICES_ALL to create rows in the table AP_SELECTED_INVOICE_CHECKS_ALL.
    In addition to creating rows in the AP_SELECTED_INVOICE_CHECKS_ALL, the build payments program also performs the following tasks:
    • Assigns document numbers for payments
    • Assigns Check Ids
    • Renumbers the remaining documents starting from the first_available_document
    • Updates the payment batch status to BUILT
    Since we are doing conversion from 10.7 to 11i where all payments need to converted hence we are keeping payment batch status as ‘FORMATTED’
    CONFIRM
    This is the final step for the payment batch process, where we will pick a payment batch from front end, and then making confirm. The menu for this
    AP Payable =>Payment Batches form =>by clicking on the Actions button
    Internally the confirm program first updates the AP_SELECTED_INVOICE_CHECKS_ALL records,
    then transfers those records to
    AP_CHECKS_ALL.
    In addition, the AP_SELECTED_INVOICES_ALL
    records are transferred into the corresponding
    AP_INVOICE_PAYMENTS_ALL,
    AP_INVOICES_ALL and
    AP_PAYMENT_SCHEDULES_ALL.
    Table Involved in Payment Batch Process
    These are the various table involved in the payment process of 10.7 and 11i.It is recommended that if corresponding earlier conversion is done then use the mapping function to get the new value.
    oAP_SELECTED_INVOICES_ALL
    oAP_INV_SELECTION_CRITERIA_ALL
    oAP_INVOICES_ALL
    oAP_PAYMENT_SCHEDULES_ALL
    oAP_SELECTED_INVOICE_CHECKS_ALL
    oAP_CHECKS_ALL
    oAP_INVOICE_PAYMENTS_ALL
    oAP_PAYMENT_SCHEDULES_ALL
    oAP_INVOICES_ALL
    oAP_BANK_ACCOUNTS_ALL `
    Common Issue:
    1.Determine the status of the Payment Batch?
    A: Query up the Payment Batch in the Payment Batches Summary window to view the status. If you can not get into the application, you can select the status from SQL*Plus:
    SELECT status FROM ap_inv_selection_criteria_all
    WHERE checkrun_name = ?<payment batch name>?;
    2. Don’t change the last update date
    We are doing the conversion for payments, hence we can’t change he last_updated_date to sysdate as this will create a problem by concurrent program, in that case we need to populate the field for FUTURE_DATED_PAYMENT=’N’
    3. don’t populate the value for INVOICE_PAYMENT_TYPE
    If there are some prepayments in the conversion process donor populate this field and pass NULL, otherwise this will create a duplicate invoice, which will cause a problem for concurrent batch for payment.
    Hope now you will be very clear about the process.
    let me me offline, if you need further.
    regards
    sanjit

  • \0D and \0A after array to spreadsheet string conversion

    Hi guys, i currently have a VI that manipulates a couple of arrays and writes them to a config file through the config VI.
    Now, i notice 1 problem whereby after my array is comma delimited and converted into a spreadsheet string, a tab and carriage return automatically appears at the end of the string. This causes my resulting config file to have \0D and \0A to appear with my keys in the config file.
    I know it's got to be the array to spreadsheet string conversion that's causing the problem because i don't have such \0D and \0A problem with keys without the conversion.
    How do i solve this?

    The OD and OA are the carriage return and line feed and yes the functona always appends these characters at the end of each line. Probably because this function is normally used to create files that a spreadsheet can read. There are several ways to remove the extra characters. Shown below is the string reversed and the String Subset function uses an offset of two. The output of that is reversed to get a string without the CR and LF. Also shown is getting the string length, subtracting 2 and wiring that to the length input of the String Subset function.

  • Implicit character or charactered structure -- to String  Conversion

    Hi everybody,
    that sounds trivial but i am struggeling.... which is the most elegant way to do a implicit "To-String" Conversion in ABAP Objects...
    I have e.g.
        data lok_string type string.
        lok_string = wa.
        m_object->addline( lok_string ).
    which is working fine but is not elegant comaring with java.
    i want
        m_object->addline( wa ).
    but this don't go when "wa" is a structured workarea with many "type c"s in it (and only these).
    but since the explicit assignment "lok_string = wa." is working well, there could be a elegant  implicit  one?
    (m_object->addline expects a string variable.)
    Thank is aprreciated.
    Regards
    Hartmut

    Hi Sandra,
    this is the right direction.... but i would like to have it as an nested expression... (since implicit conversion seams to be impossible)
    like...
    m_object->addline( lcl_xxx=>tostring( wa_head ) )
    but this line above is not an valid abap objects syntax, unfortunatelly
    ... having:
    class lcl_xxx definition.
      public section.
        class-methods tostring importing charlike type clike returning value(string) type string.
    endclass.
    class lcl_xxx implementation.
      method tostring.
        string = charlike.
      endmethod.
    endclass.
    Best regards

    I wonder if such functionality exist on JaveScript for PDF? and if there is where would you put it?
    Thanks in advance for your help...
    Regards
    Jeff

    You can write a JavaScript function and place it in the document level JavaScript or as a folder level script.
    You will have to split the text sting by the space character and then go through each element of the array and then force the first character of each element to an upper case value. You can then reassemble the elements with the spaces between them.

  • String Conversion into Quantity field ----------Sales Orders

    Hi Experts,
    Can any of you give an standard function module or conversion routine for String conversion to Quantity field.
    The problem is I pass on 5 value as a string and while the system creates any sales orders, now in the quantity filed
    it shows me as 0.005 and for value 7 it gives me as 0.007.
    So, Now I want a conversion in such a way that if I pass 5 then the system should 5.000 and if I pass 10 it should show
    as 10.00 likewise for 100 or above also.
    Thank you,

  • Easy Question -String conversion to type int

    Greetings Java Gurus,
    What is the best way to convert a String to type int?
    I have looked through the JAVA API documentation and have found the following possibilites but I cannot get the JAVA syntax right :(
    Java.lang.decode
    public static Integer decode(String nm)
    Decodes a String into an Integer.
    Java.lang.valueOf
    public static Integer valueOf(String s)
    Returns a new Integer object initialized to the value of the specified String.
    1.) If anyone has an easy way to accomplish this let me know.
    2.) If anyone could give me the proper JAVA syntax for the above commands?
    Any Ideas or Suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
    -Chibi_neko

    These are all methods of java.lang.Integer class.
    1. public static Integer decode( String nm )int a = -1;
    try {
        a = Integer.decode( "1234" );
    } catch( NumberFormatException nfe ) {
        a = -1;
    }2. public static int parseInt( String s )int a = -1;
    try {
        a = Integer.parseInt( "1234" );
    } catch( NumberFormatException nfe ) {
        a = -1;
    }3. public static int valueOf( String s )Integer a = null;
    try {
        a = Integer.valueOf( "1234" );
    } catch( NumberFormatException nfe ) {
        a = null;

  • Data conversion questions

    Hi Everyone,
    I'm confused by the data conversion rule and how to do it in abap, could you help me about some of my questions?
    1. How many ways to do data conversion ( like assignment .....)?
    2. When using field symbol, we know we can assign reference to field symbol , and at mean time , we can casting type.
        Is this kind of casting also a way to do data conversion?
    3. In my real case, I have unknown type data to convert to xstring. the type could be any ( I, D, T, STRING......). Is there an easy way to implement that when I get the data reference, I only need to import it to a method and then the method return an xstring to me?
    4. question 3 is about data->xstring, and how can I convert xstring back to the original data( should be the same type )?
    Thanks and Regards,
    Aaron

    Hi Aaron,
    try this FM:     CONVERSION_EXIT_ALPHA_INPUT
    is useful for convert different data type, here an example:
         call function 'CONVERSION_EXIT_ALPHA_INPUT'
              exporting
                input         =   A    ( type unknown )
              importing
                output        =  B  ( type xstring ).
    Perhaps that helps,
    Regards,
    Davide

  • Array(n elements) to string conversion

    i got some questions about data conversion:
    i have an array with n elements, witch i need to extract and convert to string in order to send data over udp vi. the problem is
    that the vi is getting pretty big and i'm starting to wonder about memory&cpu usage. So can anyone check
    this vi out and see if there is place for improvements.

    I've done some more changes and hidden most of the code in a sub-vi. I've also shown how to make the code scalable, in case you suddenly need to accomodate 7 or 10 inputs.
    In the new VI's, I've shown 2 different approaches to your code, but both are functionally equivalent.
    As far as performance, you can always gain a little boost by going to File --> VI Properties --> "Execution" and deselect "Allow Debuging".
    There might be other ways to optimize your code, but the thing you need to ask yourself is if this is really necessary.
    If you go to File --> VI Properties --> Memory
    you will see some "stats" for your current VI.
    The one you posted originally, has a memory footprint of ~117.5k... as for cpu-usage, unless you are working with a significantly bigger project, you do not need to worry about performance at all, unless you are on a very very old computer.
    That said, optimizing code is always important, and it is a very good way to learn, but sometimes one must be able to see when "enough is enough" and something is "good enough".
    For comparision, the new VI I made for you, which includes 2 examples/different ways of doing it, takes only ~56.7k... though I'm not sure if you need to add the sub_vi to this or if it is already added.. the sub-vi is ~23.7k total..
    Hope this helps you, and if someone else can take a look to see if there is any other obvious ways to optimize the code, then both me and the thread-owner will learn something more here.

  • Very simple XSLT string replacing question

    Hi,
    This is a really simple question for you guys, but it took me long, and i still couldn't solve it.
    I just want to remove all spaces from a node inside an XML file.
    XML:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <root insertedtime="2008-05-01T14:03:00.000+10:00" pkid="23421">
       <books>
          <book type='fiction'>
             <author>John Smith</author>
             <title>Book title</title>
             <year>2 0  0 8</year>
          </book>
       </books>
    </root>in the 'year' node, the value should not contain any spaces, that's the reason why i need to remove spaces using XSLT. Apart from removing space, i also need to make sure that the 'year' node has a non-empty value. Here's the XSLT:
    <xsl:stylesheet xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform" version="1.0">
        <xsl:strip-space elements="*"/>
        <xsl:template match="@*|node()">
            <xsl:copy>
                <xsl:apply-templates select="@*|node()"/>
            </xsl:copy>
        </xsl:template>
        <xsl:template match="//books/book[@type='fiction']">
            <xsl:copy>
                <xsl:apply-templates select="@*"/>
                <xsl:attribute name="id">101</xsl:attribute>
                <xsl:call-template name="emptyCheck">
                    <xsl:with-param name="val" select="year"/>
                    <xsl:with-param name="type" select="@type"/>
                    <xsl:with-param name="copy" select="'true'"/>
                </xsl:call-template>
                <xsl:value-of select="translate(year, ' ', '')"/>
            </xsl:copy>
        </xsl:template>
        <!-- emptyCheck checks if a string is an empty string -->
        <xsl:template name="emptyCheck">
            <xsl:param name="val"/>
            <xsl:param name="type"/>
            <xsl:param name="copy"/>
            <xsl:if test="boolean($copy)">
                <xsl:apply-templates select="node()"/>
            </xsl:if>
            <xsl:if test="string-length($val) = 0 ">
                <exception description="Type {$type} value cannot be empty"/>
            </xsl:if>
        </xsl:template>
    </xsl:stylesheet>The 'emptyCheck' function works fine, but the space replacing is not working, this is the result after the transform:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <root insertedtime="2008-05-01T14:03:00.000+10:00" pkid="23421">
       <books>
          <book type="fiction" id="101">
             <author>John Smith</author>
             <title>Book title</title>
             <year>2 0 0 8</year>2008</book>
       </books>
    </root>The spaced year value is still there, the no-space year is added outside the 'year' tags'
    anyone can help me, your help is extremely appreciated!
    Thanks!

    You should add a template for 'year' :<xsl:template match="year">
    <year><xsl:value-of select="translate(.,' ','')"/></year>
    </xsl:template>and remove the translate call in the 'book' template.
    It would be better to add a 'priority' attribute at each template so it would be explicit which template to use because match="@*|node()" could be interpreted by another transform engine as the unique template to be used !

  • German Special Characters in XSTRING to STRING conversion

    Hi Experts,
    I have a CSV file (created from a Windows Excel file) with German Special Characters (e.g. 'ä', 'Ä') and I am trying to read this into ABAP internal tables. By using the THTMLB tag 'thtmlb:fileUpload' I get an XSTRING and I am trying to convert this into STRING. However, wheny trying to do this I get an exception 'CX_SY_CONVERSION_CODEPAGE'.
    This is my coding:
      data: conv   type ref to cl_abap_conv_in_ce.
      conv = cl_abap_conv_in_ce=>create( input = lr_upload->file_content ).
      conv->read( importing data = lv_content ).
    Note: lr_upload is my XSTRING object from the file upload, lv_content is a STRING.
    In the CSV file the German special characters look fine and the SAP system is a Unicode system, but it seems like there are some problems with the conversions somehow. Any ideas from the experts?
    Thanks a lot and Regards,
    Jens

    As you mention a csv file I'm wondering if your encoding is wrong: I.e. when you create your instance of cl_abap_conv_in_ce you don't specify the encoding of your source hex string, so that means the default encoding is used, which should be UTF-8 in your case. So if your csv file is not encoded in UTF-8, specify the correct encoding in the create method and see if that helps.
    Depending on how you get the file contents you might actually be able to combine the file retrieval with the conversion in one step. E.g. if the file is read from the application server you could specify the used code page via [open dataset ... in legacy text mode ... code page|http://help.sap.com/abapdocu_70/en/ABAPOPEN_DATASET_MODE.htm#&ABAP_ALTERNATIVE_4@4@]. Similarly method gui_upload of class cl_gui_frontend_services also allows you to specify a code page.
    If all of this doesn't help, post some further details on your file (e.g. sample content & encoding) and possibly add some further details from the exception you're getting. As you mention a Unicode system it basically means that we should be able to convert all characters without any problem as long as we specify the correct source code page.
    Cheers, harald

  • How do I view previous strings of questions and answers on FF support?

    I read this response but it really doesn't answer the question.
    "If you are logged on then you see a My Contributions item in the Filter bar at the top that goes to:
    https://support.mozilla.org/questions?filter=my-contributions"
    I don't see the "filter bar" or "my responses" after I log in. I just see "Ask a question" "my log in name" and some other stuff to the right of that and below that.
    So after I log in, how do I look at strings of my previous questions and all responses to them, including new ones?

    I just figured it out!!! Wha-lah. Go to a question and then click on the underlined text in the question. Then a string of the Q and subsequent responses appears.

  • Double problem in string conversion

    I'm working on a web application. (this questions is not we related.. just giving some background to the problem) I populate a number of fields in a bean back in my business logic as Decimals. Then going up a level I do all the data manipulate I need to for display purposes and store the values as a String inside my bean. Then I pass that bean on to my jsp and it displays my values....
    Now the problem I just realized I have is that in some cases the decimal values are larger then 8 digits in length. So when I convert to a string by saying decimalVariable+""
    I end up with an exponential value.
    There are several solutions to this... but the problem is that I have thousands of places this is being done... so instead of going in and changing every decimal to a bigDecimal or going in and changing the way I convert to a string in each place, I wanted to know if I could change the toString method for Decimal.. and how to go about doing that...

    As far as being bad code... I'm keeping my mouth shut on that one.. because I've been known to do the same thing.. I just can't believe we have made it so far
    into development without this being brought to anyone's attention.Didn't mean to offend you on the bad code. :) I thought the same ("how did it go so long?") when I found our problem (and many other problems in our code).
    So my options are pretty much
    1. change all double to BigDecimal
    2. use numberFormatter anywhere it is being
    converted to a string... or actually anywhere where
    the number can possible be longer then 7 characters
    long....Use a number formatter (such as DecimalFormat) everywhere. No need to figure out whether it is needed in each case.
    I think the best solution would be to switch to BigDecimal.. but that would take a MAJOR amount of
    work... I think there are around 6K java files in this project... probably every single one of them uses a double somewhere in the class...
    hmmm July 1st Beta test deadline might be hard to meet :)Same reason why we're stuck on Java 1.3.1 at work...deadlines and possible regression issues. :(

  • JNI -- Native String Conversion

    I have a question about this tutorial
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/native1.1/implementing/string.html
    which is on accessing Java Strings in native methods.
    In particular, the tutorial states:
    "Your native method needs to call GetStringUTFChars to correctly print the string passed to it from a Java application. GetStringUTFChars converts the built-in Unicode representation of a Java string into a UTF-8 string. "
    and also notes then when converting from a java String to a C string:
    "If the original string contained non-ASCII characters, some library functions may not behave as expected if passed the converted, UTF-8 string. For example, the result of passing such a UTF-8 string to the strlen function will not be the number of Unicode characters in the string."
    I am programming in C++, not C. I handle most of my string manipulations using the STL std::string class. Do I still need to worry about the unexpected behaviour mentioned in the paragraph above?
    Also, what is the relevant difference here between UTF and Unicode? Which does std::string work with?
    Thanks for any info,
    John

    Do I still need to worry ...1) yes; but if you have a C++ compiler that implements std::basic_string<wchar_t> (as known as wstring in Microsoft Visual C++), you can work with pure Unicode.
    Which does std::string work with...2) std::string is a typedef for std::basic_string<char>, and char is not UTF-8 neither Unicode: it's a signed 8-bit quantity that maps exactly to the byte type in Java.
    std::string can be used with UTF-8 (actually, the modified UTF-8 version that is used by Java).
    The only problem with std::string is if you have characters in Java that are represented as several bytes in UTF-8, std::string.size() (or std::string.length()) will report you the number of bytes in the UTF-8 representation of your string, not the length of your Java string in characters.
    To get the length of the Java string that you've stored in a std::string in characters, you'll need to use some C library function that understands UTF-8 encoding, or simply ask the JNI functions.
