Daily Kernal Panic
One of our Xserves has been KPing daily. This is the error I get when I log in:

It seems to me that its a RAM issue but the slot that it's complaining about -J13 - is empty. Anyone have any ideas? Is it time to replace the logic board?
Thanks!

Are you running server monitor? Does it report any problem with any of the RAM? How about Power? Heat in the RAM area?
The "Show Detailed Status" settings are very detailed.
If you have extra RAM swapping it out seems like a safe bet for next test if the server is going down anyway. The poor man's test would be pulling the modules one at a time (since 512 is enough) and seeing if either RAM unit seems to behave better or worse.
Goo luck,

hi,
I have an emac that is not even a year old. purchased from apple with the original apple memory in the machine. there has been no new memory added. it is a 1.2 ghz g4 emac 256 mb of ram installed, running 10.4.
over the course fo the last 4 months, maybe less we have been having daily kernal panics. the machine just freezes. here is a sample report:

any thoughts/suggestions?
thanksHi, Louis.
Each of your panic logs begins with one of the following lines:
Unresolved kernel trap(cpu 0): 0x300 - Data access
or
panic(cpu 0 caller 0xFFFF0003): 0x300 - Data access
These indicate an 0x300 trap (error). The 0x300 (Data Access) exception indicates the processor could not perform a data memory access. Potential causes, in general terms, include RAM problems, hard disk corruption, and programming errors.
"Programming errors" in this case can include invalid instructions and violations of protected memory, however it is often difficult to differentiate a programming error from a RAM or hard disk problem since the latter two issues can cause a valid instruction to appear invalid.
Since there are no kernel-loadable modules listed in the Backtrace, this somewhat increases the likelihood of either bad RAM or hard disk corruption. If you added RAM before the panics started, the new RAM is very likely the cause. However, any RAM, even that which originally shipped with your Mac, can go bad. Panic logs such as yours do not wholly rule out a bad application, especially if the panics always occur while using the same application. However, bad apps become a lower probability.
See my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics.
My FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work through to the end, following the instruction in the order specified, including the "If all else fails..." section if a cause or resolution is not found in an earlier troubleshooting step therein.
Good luck!

Kernal panics - daily? Help?
Hi Folks
Maybe you can help... lately my imac intel has been kernal panicing.. a lot.
I can't narrow it down to one bit of software, or anything. Today it just kernal panic'd and showed that nasty multi-lingual message while I was watching a DVD and not even touching the thing...
Now - I saved the bug report, but it doesn't mean much to me. But can anyone else shed light on it? I'll post it below. It looks like it could be something with USB... anyone? Please? It makes me sad!
Thanks in advance for any advice!!

Thanks for the quick replies!
I ran the hardware test... and nothing showed up. Did the extended tests and all 'appears' to be fine.
So that's a good thing, I suppose.
I've not installed any new RAM or anything, and the only new thing added in the past few months would be my apple keyboard (which is lovely!).
I've disconnected all stuff that wasn't necessary (Sorry, Palm, you served me well but Blackberry has now made you obsolete!). I'm currently leaning towards blaming my HP C4180 printer. I remember that it had some nasty coded error message on it a while ago - and it's not been too reliable lately. So I've disconnected that and am hoping not to see the kernal panic again...
It's hard to troubleshoot something that doesn't happen at a specific point or when I'm doing something... and as this is my main machine I just have to wait it out and see if it happens again.
Hoping it doesn't and I can safely blame the printer! Otherwise will have to blame one of the 5 external hard drives. But they all tested out okay.
I will give it a week and if it doesn't happen again, Hurrah!
If it IS the printer, how can I hardware troubleshoot that? Or should I contact HP?
Thanks again for your suggestions. I spent ages looking for my hardware test disc until I read that it's on the Install disc. Doh! Shows how old fashioned I am, eh?
That Xlab article is brilliant.. have bookmarked it, but hope I don't have to look at it again!

tc.tctechnologies.driver.TCNear 8786
com.waves.driver.soundgrid 2.0.0
Use the uninstaller provided by the developer of the software. If that eliminates the kernel panics, try reinstalling one at a time to determine which one is causing the problems.
You may be able to update them to current versions that work with Mountain Lion.
Also, if those drivers are for external hardware, disconnect the hardware to test. -
I get a lot of gray screens of death on my MacBook Pro ever since I went to OS 10.8. Never had issues with the 10.6 versions and now miss those days. The kernal panics seem to occur most frequently just waking it up from sleep, regardless of where i am or what is attached to it. I can't help but wonder if it is a problem with the video drivers under 10.8.x.
I get these daily, so here is the log that gets sent to Apple, but I'm not really sure anyone looks at them. Perhaps they would if other people experienced the problem too, but perhaps I'm in the vast minority.

If so, or even if they don't, you should take your MBP into an Apple Store or Apple Certified Service center along with a printout of that article. They will test it to see if it is that problem and replace the logic board for free up to three years from date of purchase. That time is likely close or already passed. -

I have got 8gb RAM, 4gb stock and 4gb i bought second-hand. If it is this RAM that is causing the trouble i will replace it asap.
Anyone any idea what the problem might be?All three programs are possible cultprits. Uninstall them all, see if the KPs stop, then reinstall them one by one to see which is the cause. (May be more than one.)
You can temporarily uninstall them, one by one, using this command in Terminal in Applications>Utilities. That way you won't actually have to uninstall the entire program. You will need to find the exact name of the .kexts by navigating to /System/Library/Extensions. Observe case and all spaces as written in the example, below. You will need to unload all four vmware.kexts.
sudo kextunload path to file.kext/
To reload
sudo kextload path to file.kext/
Here is an example.
sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/PaceSupportFamily.kext/
Hit return. If you have never used the sudo command, you will get a warning. Then enter your admin password, which you won't see typed on the screen and hit return. Wait for the $ sign prompt to reappear, which will indicate the extension has been unloaded/loaded. Then just close the window. -
Continuing Kernal Panic, Mac Store Clueless
I brought my 1.25 Dual G4 (MMD) to the local Mac Store because it had started having repeating Kernal Panics. The machine would run for 1-2 hours and then Kernal Panic. At times, the machine would even Kernal Panic at start up. I even tried starting off the 10.3.9 disk and it Kernal Panic'ed. In short order, I had no access to my machine, or even any way to save my info off my drives.
I am the guy that other people bring thier Mac to when it's broken. I have every program/tool needed to work on a mac. So if I couldn't find the issue, I surmized no one else could, and I may have been right.
I brought my G4 to the Mac Store. They were able to repeat the Kernal Panic, and were unable to get my machine up, even trying to fire it up off of an external HD. The Mac store changed my CPU ( $600.00+ due to my applecare expiring). That didn't do it. I took it home and it did start up, so I backed up onto a Firewire drive - BUT, one hour after backing up - KERNAL PANIC!
Mac Store Trip #2, they replaced my mother board (Logic board for mac users) and my processor again (free). 1 hour later KERNAL PANIC!!
Mac Store Trip #3 - they claim the figured out that a 3rd party HD I installed was causing the Kernal Panic. I took out the hardrive, bought a brand new one, reinstalled everything, 1 hour after I finished installing 10.4.7 BOOM KERNAL PANIC!
The apple store was clueless the whole time, and did about $2000.00 worth of repairs and labor for about 6 days costing me $600.00 and gas money. I really don't care, as long as my box works.
I have found that my fan doesn't seem to "speed up" anymore as it once did, and the inside of the box seems unusally hot. I just intalled 2 extra fans, and 2 hours later KERNAL PANIC.
I know the issue is not the HD. I know the issue isn't the video/3D card (I have 2 cards, and swaping them, both occur).
I have a 2096 SCSI card from adaptec with the driver installed that I have used for 3 years...dunno if it can be that.
I have a Aurora Fuse Igniter video card, with currently no driver installed. I'm gonna take that out, but that has been in the machine for 3 years as well, with no issues.
I can guess that MAYBE one of my ram chips has gone bad. I will try taking out all but the original ram and running the machine.
Any other ideas? Anytime the processor has to work hard for about an hour, the machine Kernal Panics. I have to admit, at least now it starts up - whereas before it wasn't even doing that - so the Mac Store did do something. Now the symtoms have just changed.
I am considering installing a 3rd fan that is attached to the HD case and pointed on a slight angle into the giant heat sink of the processor. The heat sink is right next to the HD, and seems to get unusally hot.
I have Geforc4MX card currently installed, and I own a 9800Radion Pro.
This box was my workhorse. I have owned about 9 macs, and I have never had real issues like this. Ususally my HD's would just die. I cannot figure out what the heck is wrong with it, despite 10 years of fixing my macs, friends macs, and family's macs.
The Kernal panic messages weren't even being saved, thats how bad the panic was. The few times I saw it, it said "CPU 01" but since the CPU has been changed twice now, I assume its not that.
Any suggestions would be helpful. This may or may not help. I have experienced kernel panics periodically, daily, since I bought my 1.42 dual. I usually know how to fix things, but i am not certified. I understand heat, so I run a large fan- a real ordinary box fan- right next to my computer blowing past it. This does not strain the internal power supply further. i have the box maxed, two optical drives, 128 radeon 9800 card, 4 drives, no pci fans internally, unless you count the onboard video card fan. I don't leave my firewire drives attached- just on and off for transfers- and I was determined this week to get the problem (of 2 years plus, now), solved. I have been kernel panic free for slightly over a day, so I don't know if this is appropriate yet, but it seems that my original 1 GB of ram from the apple build was the problem. I did notice that those sticks were much hotter than my additional ramjet sticks this last week when I went to unseat and reseat them, so I just took them out as a test. I think formerly I just removed my additional ram as a test. I am looking around at the sticks to try and figure out if one duo was ecc and one was not.... but as I understand it, all that would do would be to remove the ecc function on the duo that was ecc... I do not remember buying non-ecc ram. If my machine continues to be stable, I intend to just buy a little more ram identical to the sticks that are working now. I've lost work and had continual challenges because of this problem, and it does not seem to be because of the ram I added, at all, but the ram from apple that I started off with. I have had this problem since the day i turned on the machine, I have read about so many other people suffering with it, and heat and firewire disks and power supply were the culprits always suggested to me. Does anyone have a site to suggest that helps one identify ram sticks with an image? Has anyone ever seen information from Apple that admits to this problem in these machines? They weren't continued that long with the move to the G5.

Random Kernal Panic in Moutain Lion 10.8.2
Hello everyone! I'm pretty new to the Mac World, so i apologize for any dumb questions...but my notebook just randomly kernal panics. I've repaired disk permissions and even used Disk Warrior to no avail. It doesn't happen daily, but it still is pretty annoying..Below is my Panic Log, i greatly appreciate any help and your time. Thank you in advance.

If it's happened only once, and is not repeated in at least a few thousand hours of use, a reasonable choice would be to ignore it. Machines don't work perfectly. They never will.
If the problem is recurrent, the possibilities are (1) a damaged OS X installation; (2) a fault in a peripheral device, if any; (3) an internal hardware fault; and (4) an obscure bug in OS X.
You can rule out the first two possibilities by reinstalling the OS and testing with non-essential peripherals disconnected and aftermarket expansion cards removed, if applicable. Sometimes a clean reinstallation (after erasing the startup volume) may solve a problem that isn't solved by reinstalling in place, without erasing.
If you've recently upgraded the memory, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts on the memory modules when handling them. If necessary, clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol.
The Apple Hardware Test, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test.
In the category of obscure bugs, reports suggest that FileVault may trigger kernel traps under some unknown conditions. Most, though not all, of these reports seem to involve booting from an aftermarket SSD. If those conditions apply to you, try deactivating FileVault.
Otherwise, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days. There isn't much point in doing this unless you can reproduce the panic, or if you can't, it happens often enough that it's likely to be repeated at the store. Otherwise you may be told that nothing is wrong.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at least two independent backups.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed. -
Mini DVI to DVI monitor Kernal Panic
I have a 20" iMac Intel Core Duo, mini DVI to DVI-D adapter, cable, and Princeton 17" DVI-D monitor. When I hook up the monitor to the iMac I immediately receive a Kernal Panic. If I restart, it also results in a Kernal Panic. It does not matter if the monitor is on or off. No monitor, no Kernal Panic. The monitor does work with a VGA adapter on a mini mac and on a G4 PowerBook. I don't have a mini DVI to VGA adapter for the iMac, so have not tried that yet. But I'd much rather have it work with DVI. Any suggestions?
did you try running a repair disk, to see if it is software related?? you could also try pram reset. (apple-option-p-r at start up, and hold til you get two sets of chimes). you could also unplug power from power supply at back of mac mini and plug it back in after a few minutes. if none of these things worked, i would contact the manufacturer of the monitor.

Mavericks + Reboot/kernal panics when Mini DVI to DVI adapter plugged in to 2008 iMac
Hi, i'm encountering a problem with my brothers iMac from 2008. We are attempting to add a 2560x1440p external monitor. When I first plugged in the cable, along with the Mini DVI/DVI adapter, the computer reboot, went to the grey screen, and then said "Your computer restarted because of an error, press any key to reboot" type message, then does it again. I tried plugging in just the adapter, and got no kernal panic, so it's only when info/power is transmitted through the cable.
I googled it extensively but couldn't find any solution nor even a hint of a solutiion. I suspect it might be the graphics card (ATI Radeon HD 2400), but I don't know. A few years ago we connected a 720p TV using a MiniDVi/HDMI adapter, and it worked, but the resolution sucked and it was more of an experiment.
I should add we installed Mavericks yesterday if it makes any difference. I also asked the seller and and he confirmed the adapter was a DVI-D, which is what the external monitor requires. Here is the Problem Report given after removal of adapter and reboot. Thanks for any help.

24" iMac refurb - kernal panic after apple logo
I received a refurbished 24" C2D iMac on Friday and it seemed to be in perfect condition. Everything worked, and all of the updates were applied.
Upon returning to the office on Monday, there was a kernal panic when awakening it. It also consistently panics at the blue screen before "Loading Mac OS X..." and after the gray apple logo screen.
Starting in safe mode works fine. Starting from CD works fine.
I have wiped the drive and reloaded OS X 10.4.7, with no change, and have updated to 10.4.8 and all the latest updates (including airport 2007_002), with no change.
Apple Hardware Test from the install CD shows that everything checks out ok. The hard drive also passed all tests. I have tried each RAM module separately.
The panic.log file indicates that there may be an issue with the video card:
"invalid frame pointer" and
"Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependecies):
com.apple.GeForce(4.3.8)@0x2c0e6000"
Is there anything I can to single out the video card? Should I just put it back in the box and return it?First, I'd check this to see if the firmware is actually updated:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imacefifirmwareupdate11.html
If not, read the read-me information available. It may be that upon restart you didn't hold down the button long enough for the indicator light to start flashing, which is the beginning of the actual installation (separate matter from the download). Remember that AirPort is an application, and preferably should be turned off post-download, pre-installation, for installation to be trouble-free. -
MacBook Pro 13" Early 2011 2,3Ghz - Random Kernal Panics
Have random kernal panics on my MacBook Pro.. Often when useing more more than one app but it still happens randomly tho.
Have tried different harddrives, re-installed mavericks, memtest on bootable cd for 12h, smc fancontrol with higher rpm settings.
Original ram. Not that high temps.
Anyone have an idea what the issue could be?
Sorry for my english. Thnx.

What is happening? 5 Kernal Panics in less than a month
Hello,
I apologize if this is in the wrong forum. I have a new MacBook Pro 2.4, I updated the memory from the stock 2GB to an OWC 4GB set. I have had 5 kernal panic since I received the machine (approximately 1.5 months, updated memory about a month ago). I know that memory can frequently cause a kernal panic, but I noticed in my Console panic log that it mentions the airport driver. Should I be contacting Apple or OWC? Thank you in advance for you help.

Here is the most prolific thread on the subject. -
I'm getting the kernal panic screen when I put in DVD
My iMac G5, 2 GB has been slow, and occasionally getting the "restart your computer" screen. I ran the Apple Hardware Test on it twice. It passed both times, so I decided it must be software. I proceeded to do a clean install of the OS. Now I'm getting the Kernal Panic screen just as the computer recognizes the disk and is about to launch the installer. I've been reading the forums on Kernal Panic. Could be RAM memory. But could it also be the optical drive if its slow to spin at first?
What info on the "Panic" screen would tell me where the problem is?
Here's the message:

panic: We are hanging here...
Your title is a little confusing; are you getting the message ONLY when you put a DVD in, or does it also happen when starting the computer up?
If it's the DVD, is it the OS DVD? Are you sure you are using a PPC DVD and not an Intel DVD? I recall the same panic screen on my own G5 1st gen when I mixed up my Intel DVD with my PPC DVD.
The first line of your panic (panic(cpu 0 caller 0x002DEC28): Unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerMac12.1") was very similar to mine, except mine had "panic(cpu 0 caller 0x002DEC28): Unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerMac8.2" -
How to resolve a Kernal Panic in Leopard
I am pulling my hair out with my MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Laptop running with Leopard.
3 weeks ago my laptop had a Kernal Panic. I made sure I had all my files backed up to my external drive which is a Western Digital My Book Essential Edition with 1 TB/TO of memory. At that time, I was using CS4 Photoshop, InDesign, Microsoft Word, Acrobat and Mail. I had large size photos saved on my hard drive and small movie clips so I removed them and only have my current work files saved on the hard drive and past work files saved on my external drive and any files I don't want to loose for sure burned to CDs. I was able to rule out that it is not a hardware issue by running Disk Utility from my OS disk. Then I uninstalled CS4 Design Premium. My laptop worked great for a couple of days without it. I then reinstalled CS4 and started having the Kernal Panics again. I thought Photoshop and InDesign was causing the problem. I decided to uninstall CS4 again then just install Dreamweaver and Fireworks because I needed to use them for a project. My laptop was working great for a couple of days then I had another Kernal Panic. Also, I noticed if I had my external drive plugged in it would slow down my computer so I only connect it when I am ready to back up my files for the day. So now I think I need to reinstall my OS. Below is today's Kernal Panic report. Can anyone help me interpret this and tell me what I am doing wrong/suggest solutions to resolve this? I am also thinking of upgrading my hard drive since it only has 160GB of memory and from what I read I need at least 120GB free to run Photoshop alone. Also upgrade the RAM...currently have 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM? Thanks.
