Dana Nourie web application tutorials

hi
these are great tutorials and i've learned a lot from them - it brought so mcuh together in a clea dn easy to understand manner
only problem after completing part 4 i can't compile my divelog.java file as its giving me the following error
C:\divelog\Dives.java:31: 'class' or 'interface' expected
} // Closes class
^
C:\divelog\Dives.java:33: 'class' or 'interface' expected
^
2 errors
all the others in the 4 parts have compiled successfully but i cant work it out.
any ideas ?
cheers
chris

duh !!! I should have just read your error message... its missing or has too many "}" braces... Like the tutorial said, errors are your friends...
You will find it... I think it was done deliberately to get you used to detecting and fixing errors...

  • Problem with tutorial; "Build a Web Application with JDeveloper 11g Using "

I've got a rather new installation of Vista Business x64 on my developer rig, and last week I installed the new JDeveloper 11g version. The installation was all-inclusive, no customization on my end.
In addition I've got a test installation of an Oracle DB 11gR1 on an available server here.
To familiarize myself with the new JDeveloper I decided to spend some time with the JDeveloper 11g tutorials found here: http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/obe11jdev/11/index.html.
I've started twice on the second tutorial, "Build a Web Application with JDeveloper 11g Using EJB, JPA, and JavaServer Faces", and find myself repeatedly stuck at step 19 in section "Creating the Data Model and Testing it".
It seems impossible to deploy the application to the default application server. The server starts fine on its own, I can access it via the admin console on port 7001 and it looks good. However, when I try to run the HRFacadeBean funny things are happening, symptomized by the following error messages seen in the IDE log-area:
    The "Messages" pane displays:

    Done
I'm not that familiar with these things but it seems to me that there is an issue with port numbers here. The application seems to expect a app.server service at port 7101, but does'nt find one.
Any suggestions on how to fix this problem would be appreciated?

    Jupp,
It fails in a similar way.
What I did was; create a simle 'Hello World' html file, saving it with the jsp extension. In Jdev11g i made a new application and an emtpy project, then loaded the jsp file and made it the default run-target. This compiles nicely.
When running the project it first attempts to start the WebLogicServer (WLS). After a few minutes it is started as seen in the "Running: DefaultServer" pane:

But, of course, the server is actually running as I can access it via its Admin Console.
So, I try to run the project again, and this time the following is shown in the "Messages" pane:

[waiting for the server to complete its initialization...]
[Server Instance DefaultServer is shutting down.  All applications currently running will be terminated and undeployed.]
    Process exited.
The WLS is still running though as I can still access its adm console.
To me it seems that it is attempting to start a separate instance of the WLS for each run attempt, but then I could be wrong.....:(
Later I'll try to change the default WLS port from 7001 to 7101 as suggested in another port here.
I must admit that I'm a bit surprised that the JDev11g doesn't work fine at this very simple level when performing a default install.

Also an honorable way to make money IMO.I was using iText before 2004 when the first edition of the book came out ( 4 years or so after the library was first introduced) and it was hard work. PDF is a very complex document format and just using the Javadoc does not really get you anywhere. There are many 'gotchas' in iText and most of the iText tutorials cover only the very basics and pretty much none of the 'gochas'. The book starts off with very simple examples that could be constructed from the Javadoc but then it does move on to the more complex issues. Worth every penny.

  • How can I develop a web application using EJB design pattern?

I have searched over the web and found quite a lot of tutorials on how to use the EJB design pattern.
I know that there will be a home interface, EJB object interface and a SessionBean.
But the tutorials often only cover a single class, this made me unable to get a complete picture of how EJB design pattern can be implemented into a whole system.
I am now required to devleop an online shopping web application using EJB and JSP page.
I think I will need to create a lot of classes: Member, ShoppingCart, Product...etc.
What I want to ask is that, do I need to create a home interface, EJB object interface and a SessionBean for each of these classes?
I really need some ideas on how to develop this system using EJB + JSP pages.
    Many thanks to you all.

For every EJB that you want to create, you will need to code a home and remote interface and a bean class.

  • How to use Swing in a web Application

Can you suggest me some good PDF/tutorial or some good site for reading about using SWING in a Web Application.
In our web application we plan to use JSP/Struts for the presentation layer. However there are a few screens that require some advanced UI like color coded assets and a graphical version of Outstanding Vs Available limit. We are wondering whether we should use SWING for these screens. Do you think this is a good idea or is there a better apprach to deal with this
What are the disadvantages of using SWING VS JSP/Servlet in a Web environment. Is there a site or pdf where i can get information about this.

I'd say the biggest disadvantage is that your client machines have to download and install the bloody java plug in.
What you write about your UI ain't half vague. What the deuce is a "color coded asset"? Is it
interactive? If not, could it be represented by an image? If so, even if it is a non-static image, it is a simple
matter for your webapp to generate the image on the fly. Many web app tutorials demonstrate that.

  • Handle SQL Server Agent in Web Application

    Hi,
I have asp.net web application with SQL Server as back end. I have some SQL jobs to handle the transactions. Now the requirement is i need to handle the Agent from the front end.
We can use SMO object for that. But as a newer can you guide me what are the challneges or problems create in this approach. Or any guidlines for correct approach. My scenarios are
    1. Can create jobs, shedule the jobs, and set alerts from the front end
    2. I need to show the Job execution history in the page
    3. I need to show the activity monitor in the page
    4. I need rerun the job when it is shown as failed from the page
Also give guidlines to backup the history log so that i can clear the history after some duration

In order to use SMO, you'll need to either install the prerequisite assebmlies.  This can be done by installing the SQL Server Client tools SDK from the SQL Server installation media or the SQL Server Shared Management Objects msi from the SQL Server
feature pack.  Alternatively, as cmille19 suggested, you can simply call the SQL Agent procs directly from you code.  SMO simply calls stored procs under the covers (both documented and undocumented ones) to implement job management functionality.

  • Help Building Simple Web Application

So i've decided to build an online football pool application. I've decided its going to be built in java. I have spent some time going through java tutorials and learning what i can on my own.
I've decided to use Apache Tomcat 4.1 as my web server and jsp/servlet engine. I know i am going to also use SQL Server as my database (i was able to get my hands on a copy)
I want to separate my presentation logic from business logic. I plan on implementing my business logic using java beans that will reside in the web-inf/classes directory of my Tomcat directory.
    1) Am I headed in the right direction?
    2) Does anyone know of a good hands on book/web site that describes building a web application from the ground up using a similar architecture as described above. I have a lot to learn about java as well but prefer to learn it hands on.
I appreciate any and all feedback.

  • ADF Essentials Fusion Web Application(ADF) Templates missing

I have installed JDeveloper 11g Release 2 (11.1.2.3.0), in order to evaluate development with ADF Essentials.
The tutorial ( Developing with Oracle ADF Essentials) http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E18941_01/tutorials/jdtut_11r2_55/jdtut_11r2_55_1.html shows how to start
a new Fusion Web Application(ADF) project.
But this option is missing !!!
    What am I missing ?

    Combining Timo's and Shay's answers
    I reproduced successfully the following
If Java EE role is selected when entering JDeveloper first time after installation of JDeveloper then
even if studio developer role is selected from the tools menu, there
is no way to get ADF Fusion development functionality as ADF Business *, ADF Model Business * features, ADF application templates, are missing.
The only valid solution is to uninstall JDeveloper and install it again ( there is no need to use generic installer) and select
studio developer the first time after installation.
It looks like ADF functionality is registered only at initial JDeveloper startup with developer role selected.

  • Best combination of technologies for Java db-supported web application?

    Hi everyone!
I was given the task to develop a Java database-supported web application and am now wondering what combination of technologies would best fit my requirements.
Basically, I am supposed to transform an "Excel-based" application into a Java-based web application that can be run in a browser in our intranet (I know, that's what a web application is supposed to do).
The Excel application consist of an Excel sheet that holds all the data and a VBA form, that shows and lets you edit all the details/fields of a row and lets you navigate through the rows. Furthermore there are certain macros to filter the data table.
Now, to transform the application, all data from Excel will be moved to an Oracle relational database and I want to rebuild the functionality with Java.
Consequently, the Java application is intended to...
    - output the table as is in the browser
    - easily let you filter the data of the table
    - let you create (and save) custom filters
    - show detail view of a row
    - navigate through the rows of the (filtered) table
    - save the data that is entered/edited/deleted in the detail view back to the table in the database
So, what are the best (and easiest to use) tools and technologies to develop such an application?
Currently my reasearch has led me to the following conclusions:
*1.* Architecture: I need a three-tier client-server application, which lead us to using the J2EE platform, right?
*2.* For the persistence layer I somehow have to map the database table to a Java object,
    - either doing it completely manually (coding) using JDBC
    - or using EJB3 / Java Persistence API / Hibernate to get at least the getters and setters auto-generated, right?
Please, correct me whenever i got something wrong!
Oracle JDeveloper supports the mapping process with a wizard when using EJB3 and JPA
    (http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/obe1013jdev/10131/ejb_and_jpa/master-detail_pagewith_ejb.htm)
Is there something comparable available for Eclipse?
*3.* I'd like to use Java Server Faces for the UI. Besides the reference implementation there are several other implementations with additional components for e.g. displaying tables. There are:
    - Apache MyFaces Trinidad (former ADF Faces, although ADF Faces looks different/has different style sheet than Trinidad?)
    - NetBeans Visual Web tools (which look quite nice in the tutorial, but require the NetBeans IDE, I guess?! Tutorial: http://www.netbeans.org/kb/60/web/web-jpa.html
*4.* What IDE would you recommend? Should have a WYSIWYG editor for the JSF files and should support me as much as possible as a Java Learner!
    - JDeveloper
    - Eclipse (+Plugins?)
    - NetBeans
    - MyEclipse (only if there is a free version out there, I have read about an Eclipse plug-in, but don't know if that was free...)
*5.* Do you know some good and easy-to-understand tutorials covering this problem?
*6.* What other aspects should I think of? Are there certain technologies for the business logic or just normal JavaBeans? What about SessionBeans and ManagedBeans?
Any help, answers, ideas, explanations, comments, recommendations, will be highly appreciated!
    Cheers,
    Chris

Thanks paulcw, for your quick reply and helpful comments!
The whole thing is getting bigger than I thought...
Actually this is a 1-man-project, that I am supposed to realise for small department during my internship in a big company.
Maybe a more detailed description of the structure may help you to understand what I actually need.
The table of concern, is an overview of certain projects inside the company and read-only, as it is a view on another database uniting data relevant for the department.
Then there is a second table for additional data (specific for the department) for each project. This data has to be entered, modified, deleted with the new application, while the data from the first table is only displayed.
    1) In this case, is AJAX / JavaScript still necessarily needed?
    2) EJB and Hibernate sound like overkill to me as well, but what would be the alternatives? JDBC, SQL queries and rowSets? And are the first mentioned really so hard to use?
    3) Do you have any recommendations on how to solve the multiple access problem (I'm sure, I'm not the only one with this kind of problem...)?
    Thanks to everyone in advance!

  • JSF Intro Tutorial - Error Message: "Error instantiating web-application"

    Hi all there !
I find JDeveloper a very good tool to learn how to produce websites.
I 've just started with the tutorials.
    Specifically: http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/obe1013jdev/10131/jsfintro/jsfintro.htm
The problem I found is in Runing the application section:
"1. ...Right-click /welcome.jsp in the diagram (faces-config.xml) and select Run from the context menu."
The OC4J server starts, shows a lot of messages (warnings, errors, etc.) in its Log, open Firefox Navigator and shows a page with error: "Error instantiating web-application" , "Application: JSFIntro-view-webapp has been stopped".
JDeveloper I am using is: version 10.1.3.1.0.
I also tried with MS-IEXPLORE (changing the Preferences) with the same result (different look though).
I am saving the log in a txt file I could send to you if needed.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Roberto,
The jsfintro obe is working fine for me and most of the people who tested it.
I've seen the "Error instantiating web-application" when I usually deploy to a
Standalone OC4J being run on older JDK version than my JDev 10.1.3.1 (JDK 1.5)
Yet, I don't think you are deploying the jsfintro application.
Check where you installed JDeveloper: it is recommended to have it under
a folder name without any space. eg: C:\jdev10131
Check to see if you can run any other application :
eg: in JDev, Help menu -> Cue Cards -> Learn about J2EE applications ...
you should find some simple JSF ones.
if that still doesn't work, try downloading JDevStudio version 10.1.3.2, then
decompress it under your C:\jdev10132 folder, then run jdeveloper.exe.
    Hopefully, this will run fine.

  • Not able to find - Web Application Framework tab in IDE

    Hi
I just downloaded the sun studio enterprise yesterday, I was trying to follow the tutorial for (http://developers.sun.com/prodtech/javatools/jsenterprise/learning/tutorials/jse7/webapp.html
    Developing a Web Application)
    The tutorial says
    1. Select the Web Application Framework tab on the window at the left hand side of the IDE.
I am not able to find this tab on my IDE. Can anyone tell me how where to find/activate this tab.
I searched in all the Sub Menus I could not find it. Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Sai

    Hi
Thanks for figuring that out, I searched for that tab for 2 hrs.
Where can I find the tutorial for creating a simple application in JSE8? I looked at
    http://developers.sun.com/prodtech/javatools/jsenterprise/learning/tutorials/index.html#jse8
but everything looks like UML related.
    Thanks
